Some remarks on the simplicial volume of nonpositively curved manifolds

We show that any closed manifold with a metric of nonpositive curvature that admits either a single point rank condition or a single point curvature condition has positive simplicial volume. We use this to provide a differential geometric proof of a conjecture of Gromov in dimension three.

On splitting rank of non-compact type symmetric spaces and bounded cohomology

Let $X=G/K$ be a higher rank symmetric space of non-compact type, where $G$ is the connected component of the isometry group of $X$. We define the splitting rank of $X$, denoted by $\text{srk}(X)$, to be the maximal dimension of a totally geodesic submanifold $Y\subset X$ which splits off an isometric $\mathbb R$-factor. We compute explicitly the splitting rank for each irreducible symmetric space. For an arbitrary (not necessarily irreducible) symmetric space, we show that the comparison map $η:H^{*}_{c,b}(G,\mathbb{R})\rightarrow H^{*}_c(G,\mathbb{R})$ is surjective in degrees $*\geq \text{srk}(X)+2$, provided $X$ has no small direct factors.

Barycentric straightening and bounded cohomology

We study the barycentric straightening of simplices in irreducible symmetric spaces of non-compact type. We show that, for an n-dimensional symmetric space of rank r>1, the p-Jacobian has uniformly bounded norm, as soon as p is at least n-r+2. As a consequence, for a non-compact, connected, semisimple real Lie group G, in degrees n-r+2 and higher, every cohomology class has a bounded representative. This answers Dupont's problem in small codimension. We also give examples of symmetric spaces where the barycentrically straightened simplices of dimension n-r have unbounded volume, showing that the range in which we obtain boundedness of the p-Jacobian is very close to optimal.

Fault-Tolerant Control of Linear Quantum Stochastic Systems

In quantum engineering, faults may occur in a quantum control system, which will cause the quantum control system unstable or deteriorate other relevant performance of the system. This note presents an estimator-based fault-tolerant control design approach for a class of linear quantum stochastic systems subject to fault signals. In this approach, the fault signals and some commutative components of the quantum system observables are estimated, and a fault-tolerant controller is designed to compensate the effect of the fault signals. Numerical procedures are developed for controller design and an example is presented to demonstrate the proposed design approach.

Representation and Network Synthesis for a Class of Mixed Quantum-Classical Linear Stochastic Systems

The purpose of this paper is to present a network realization theory for a class of mixed quantum-classical linear stochastic systems. Two forms, the standard form and the general form, of this class of linear mixed quantum-classical systems are proposed. Necessary and sufficient conditions for their physical realizability are derived. Based on these physical realizability conditions, a network synthesis theory for this class of linear mixed quantum-classical systems is developed, which clearly exhibits the quantum component, the classical component, and their interface. An example is used to illustrate the theory presented in this paper.

Quantum feedback control of atomic ensembles and spinor Bose-Einstein condensates

Cold atomic ensembles and spinor Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) are potential candidates for quantum memories as they have long coherence times and can be coherently controlled. Unlike most candidates for quantum memories which are genuine or effective single particle systems, in atomic ensembles the quantum information is stored as a spin coherent state involving a very large number of atoms. A typical task with such ensembles is to drive the state towards a particular quantum state. While such quantum control methods are well-developed for qubit systems, it is a non-trivial task to extend quantum control methods to the many-particle case. The objective of this work is to deterministically steer an arbitrary state of the atomic ensemble into a desired spin coherent state. To this end, we design our control law using stochastic stability theory, the quantum filtering theorem, and phase contrast imaging. We apply our control laws to different axes and show that it is possible to manipulate the atoms into different target states.

Quantum Optical Realization of Classical Linear Stochastic Systems

The purpose of this paper is to show how a class of classical linear stochastic systems can be physically implemented using quantum optical components. Quantum optical systems typically have much higher bandwidth than electronic devices, meaning faster response and processing times, and hence has the potential for providing better performance than classical systems. A procedure is provided for constructing the quantum optical realization. The paper also describes the use of the quantum optical realization in a measurement feedback loop. Some examples are given to illustrate the application of the main results.
