Converting normal insulators into topological insulators via tuning orbital levels

Tuning the spin-orbit coupling strength via foreign element doping and/or modifying bonding strength via strain engineering are the major routes to convert normal insulators to topological insulators. We here propose an alternative strategy to realize topological phase transition by tuning the orbital level. Following this strategy, our first-principles calculations demonstrate that a topological phase transition in some cubic perovskite-type compounds CsGeBr$_3$ and CsSnBr$_3$ could be facilitated by carbon substitutional doping. Such unique topological phase transition predominantly results from the lower orbital energy of the carbon dopant, which can pull down the conduction bands and even induce band inversion. Beyond conventional approaches, our finding of tuning the orbital level may greatly expand the range of topologically nontrivial materials.

Universal scheme to generate metal-insulator transition in disordered systems

We propose a scheme to generate metal-insulator transition in random binary layer (RBL) model, which is constructed by randomly assigning two types of layers. Based on a tight-binding Hamiltonian, the localization length is calculated for a variety of RBLs with different cross section geometries by using the transfer-matrix method. Both analytical and numerical results show that a band of extended states could appear in the RBLs and the systems behave as metals by properly tuning the model parameters, due to the existence of a completely ordered subband, leading to a metal-insulator transition in parameter space. Furthermore, the extended states are irrespective of the diagonal and off-diagonal disorder strengths. Our results can be generalized to two- and three-dimensional disordered systems with arbitrary layer structures, and may be realized in Bose-Einstein condensates.

Enhancement of coherent energy transfer by disorder and temperature in light harvesting processes

We investigate the influence of static disorder and thermal excitations on excitonic energy transport in the light-harvesting apparatus of photosynthetic systems by solving the Schrödinger equation and taking into account the coherent hoppings of excitons, the rates of exciton creation and annihilation in antennas and reaction centers, and the coupling to thermally excited phonons. The antennas and reaction centers are modeled, respectively, as the sources and drains which provide the channels for creation and annihilation of excitons. Phonon modes below a maximum frequency are coupled to the excitons that are continuously created in the antennas and depleted in the reaction centers, and the phonon population in these modes obeys the Bose-Einstein distribution at a given temperature. It is found that the energy transport is not only robust against the static disorder and the thermal noise, but it can also be enhanced by increasing the randomness and temperature in most parameter regimes. Relevance of our work to the highly efficient energy transport in photosynthetic systems is discussed.

Stable Nanotubular Crystal of Silicon: A Predicted Allotrope With Direct Band Gap

On basis of the first principle calculation we show that a crystalline structure of silicon, as a novel allotrope with nanotubular holes along two perpendicular directions, is stable. The calculations on geometrical and electronic properties reveal that this allotrope possesses a direct band gap wider by 0.5eV than the indirect one of silicon with diamond structure. The crystal belongs to I41/AMD space group, showing anisotropic optical properties and Young modulus. The bulk modulus is 64.4GPa and the density is 1.9g/cm$^{3}$, lower than that of the diamond silicon due to the presence of nanotubular holes. It is hopeful that the allotrope may widely expand applications of silicon in many fields due to its direct band gap and specific nanotubular structure.

Investigation of nonlocal information as condition for violations of Bell inequality and information causality

On the basis of local realism theory, nonlocal information is necessary for violation of Bell's inequality. From a theoretical point of view, nonlocal information is essentially the mutual information on distant outcome and measurement setting. In this work we prove that if the measurement is free and unbiased, the mutual information about the distant outcome and setting is both necessary for the violation of Bell's inequality in the case with unbiased marginal probabilities. In the case with biased marginal probabilities, we point out that the mutual information about distant outcome cease to be necessary for violation of Bell's inequality, while the mutual information about distant measurement settings is still required. We also prove that the mutual information about distant measurement settings must be contained in the transmitted messages due to the freedom of measurement choices. Finally we point out that the mutual information about both distant outcome and measurement settings are necessary for a violation of information causality.

Efficient excitation of a symmetric collective atomic state with a single-photon through dipole blockade

In the famous quantum communication scheme developed by Duan {\it et al.}[L.M. Duan, M.D. Lukin, J.I. Cirac, and P. Zoller, Nature (London) {\bf 414} 413 (2001)], the probability of successful generating a symmetric collective atomic state with a single-photon emitted have to be far smaller than 1 to obtain an acceptable entangled state. Because of strong dipole-dipole interaction between two Rydberg atoms, more than one simultaneous excitations in an atomic ensembles are greatly suppressed, which makes it possible to excite a mesoscopic cold atomic ensemble into a singly-excited symmetric collective state accompanied by a signal photon with near unity success probability, at the same higher-order excitations can be significantly inhibited.

Long-distance quantum communication with "polarization" maximally entangled states

We propose a scheme for long-distance quantum communication where the elementary entanglement is generated through two-photon interference and quantum swapping is performed through one-photon interference. Local "polarization" maximally entangled states of atomic ensembles are generated by absorbing a single photon from on-demand single-photon sources. This scheme is robust against phase fluctuations in the quantum channels, moreover speeds up long-distance high-fidelity entanglement generation rate.

Proposal for a loophole-free Bell test with electron spins of donors

So far, all experimental tests of Bell inequalities which must be satisfied by all local realistic hidden-variable theories and are violated by quantum mechanical predictions have left at least one loophole open. We propose a feasible setup allowing for a loophole-free test of the Bell inequalities. Two electron spin qubits of phosphorus donors in semiconductors in different cavities 300 m apart are entangled through a bright coherent light and postselections using homodyne measurements. The electron spins are then read out randomly and independently by Alice and Bob, respectively, with unity efficiency in less than 0.7$μ$s by using optically induced spin to charge transduction detected by radio-frequency single electron transistor. A violation of Bell inequality larger than 37% and 18% is achievable provided that the detection accuracy is 0.99 and 0.95, respectively.

Robust quantum repeater with atomic ensembles and single-photon sources

We present a quantum repeater protocol using atomic ensembles, linear optics and single-photon sources. Two local 'polarization' entangled states of atomic ensembles $u$ and $d$ are generated by absorbing a single photon emitted by an on-demand single-photon sources, based on which high-fidelity local entanglement between four ensembles can be established efficiently through Bell-state measurement. Entanglement in basic links and entanglement connection between links are carried out by the use of two-photon interference. In addition to being robust against phase fluctuations in the quantum channels, this scheme may speed up quantum communication with higher fidelity by about 2 orders of magnitude for 1280 km compared with the partial read (PR) protocol (Sangouard {\it et al.}, Phys. Rev. A {\bf77}, 062301 (2008)) which may generate entanglement most quickly among the previous schemes with the same ingredients.

Quantum Communications with Compressed Decoherence Using Bright Squeezed Light

We propose a scheme for long-distance distribution of quantum entanglement in which the entanglement between qubits at intermediate stations of the channel is established by using bright light pulses in squeezed states coupled to the qubits in cavities with a weak dispersive interaction. The fidelity of the entanglement between qubits at the neighbor stations (10 km apart from each other) obtained by postselection through the balanced homodyne detection of 7 dB squeezed pulses can reach F=0.99 without using entanglement purification, at same time, the probability of successful generation of entanglement is 0.34.

Quantum Interfaces Using Nanoscale Surface Plasmons

The strong coupling between individual optical emitters and propagating surface plasmons confined to a conducting nanotip make this system act as an ideal interface for quantum networks, through which a stationary qubit and a flying photon (surface plasmon) qubit can be interconverted via a Raman process. This quantum interface paves the way for many essential functions of a quantum network, including sending, receiving, transferring, swapping, and entangling qubits at distributed quantum nodes as well as a deterministic source and an efficient detector of a single-photon. Numerical simulation shows that this scheme is robust against experimental imperfections and has high fidelity. Furthermore, being smaller this interface would significantly facilitate the scalability of quantum computers.

Efficient Long-distance Quantum Communication Using Microtoroidal Resonators

Based on the interaction between a three-level system and a microtoroidal resonator, we present a scheme for long-distance quantum communication in which entanglement generation with near 0.5 success probability and swaps can be implemented by accurate state detection via measuring about 100 photons. With this scheme the average time of successful entanglement distribution over 2500 km with high fidelity can be decreased to only about 30 ms, by 7 orders of magnitude smaller compared with famous Duan-Lukin-Cirac-Zoller (DLCZ) protocol [L.-M. Duan {\it et al.} Nature (London) {\bf414}, 413 (2001)].

Scaling of critical connectivity of mobile ad hoc communication networks

In this paper, critical global connectivity of mobile ad hoc communication networks (MAHCN) is investigated. We model the two-dimensional plane on which nodes move randomly with a triangular lattice. Demanding the best communication of the network, we account the global connectivity $η$ as a function of occupancy $σ$ of sites in the lattice by mobile nodes. Critical phenomena of the connectivity for different transmission ranges $r$ are revealed by numerical simulations, and these results fit well to the analysis based on the assumption of homogeneous mixing . Scaling behavior of the connectivity is found as $η\sim f(R^βσ)$, where $R=(r-r_{0})/r_{0}$, $r_{0}$ is the length unit of the triangular lattice and $β$ is the scaling index in the universal function $f(x)$. The model serves as a sort of site percolation on dynamic complex networks relative to geometric distance. Moreover, near each critical $σ_c(r)$ corresponding to certain transmission range $r$, there exists a cut-off degree $k_c$ below which the clustering coefficient of such self-organized networks keeps a constant while the averaged nearest neighbor degree exhibits a unique linear variation with the degree k, which may be useful to the designation of real MAHCN.

Dispersive CQED interactions between matter qubits and bright squeezed light

Dispersive interactions of matter qubits with bright squeezed light in a high-Q cavity is studied. Numerical simulation shows that higher fidelity of operations to obtain a certain phase shift of the pulse through the dispersive light-matter interaction may be reached using bright squeezed light than that using bright coherent light.

The Bound of Entanglement of Superpositions with More Than Two Components

A bipartite quantum state (for two systems in any dimensions) can be decomposed as a superposition of many components. For a superposition of more than two components we prove that there is a bound of the entanglement of the superposition state which can be expressed according to entanglements of its component states. Especially, if the component states are mutually bi-orthogonal, the entanglement of the superposition state can be exactly given in terms of the entanglements of the states being superposed.

Anderson localization of electron states in graphene in different types of disorder

Anderson localization of electron states on graphene lattice with diagonal and off-diagonal (OD) disorder in the absence of magnetic field is investigated by using the standard finite-size scaling analysis. In the presence of diagonal disorder all states are localized as predicted by the scaling theory for two-dimensional systems. In the case of OD disorder, the states at the Dirac point (E=0) are shown to be delocalized due to the specific chiral symmetry, although other states ($E \neq 0$) are still localized. In OD disorder the conductance at E=0 in an $M\times L$ rectangular system at the thermodynamical limit is calculated with the transfer-matrix technique for various values of ratio $M/L$ and different types of distribution functions of the OD elements $t_{nn'}$. It is found that if all the $t_{nn'}$'s are positive the conductance is independent of $L/M$ as restricted by 2 delocalized channels at E=0. If the distribution function includes the sign randomness of elements $t_{nn'}$, the conductivity, rather than the conductance, becomes $L/M$ independent. The calculated value of the conductivity is around $\frac{4e^2}{h}$, in consistence with the experiments.

Vibration Induced Non-adiabatic Geometric Phase and Energy Uncertainty of Fermions in Graphene

We investigate geometric phase of fermion states under relative vibrations of two sublattices in graphene by solving time-dependent Schödinger equation using Floquet scheme. In a period of vibration the fermions acquire different geometric phases depending on their momenta. There are two regions in the momentum space: the adiabatic region where the geometric phase can be approximated by the Berry phase and the chaotic region where the geometric phase drastically fluctuates in changing parameters. The energy of fermions due to vibrations shows spikes in the chaotic region. The results suggest a possible dephasing mechanism which may cause classical-like transport properties in graphene.

Local vertical measurements and violation of Bell inequality

For two qubits belonging to Alice and Bob, we derive an approach to setup the bound of Bell operator in the condition that Alice and Bob continue to perform local vertical measurements. For pure states we find that if the entanglement of the two qubits is less than 0.2644 (measured with von Neumann entropy) the violation of the Bell inequality will never be realized, and only when the entanglement is equal to 1 the maximal violation ($2\sqrt{2}$) can occur. For specific form of mixed states, we prove that the bound of the Bell inequality depends on the concurrence. Only when the concurrence is greater than 0.6 the violation of the Bell inequality can occur, and the maximal violation can never be achieved. We suggest that the bound of the Bell operator in the condition of local vertical measurements may be used as a measure of the entanglement.
