Non-Hermitian Delocalization Induced by Residue Imaginary Velocity

The dichotomy of localization versus delocalization is a historic topic central to quantum and condensed matter physics. We discover a new delocalization mechanism attributed to a residue imaginary (part of) velocity $\operatorname{Im}(v)$, feasible for ground states or low-temperature states of non-Hermitian quantum systems under periodic boundary conditions. In sharp contrast to conventional formalisms through extended wavefunctions, these target systems exhibit delocalization in collective physical properties such as correlation and entanglement (of the Fermi Seas) despite sometimes localized left and right single-particle eigenstates, as we demonstrate numerically and generalize to scenarios with finite temperatures and interaction. Interestingly, disorder contributing to $\operatorname{Im}(v)$ may also allow strong-disorder delocalization. Thus, the nontrivial physics of $\operatorname{Im}(v)$ significantly enriches our understanding of delocalization and harbors interesting experiments and practical applications.

Nontrivial worldline winding in non-Hermitian quantum systems

Amid the growing interest in non-Hermitian quantum systems, non-interacting models have received the most attention. Here, through the stochastic series expansion quantum Monte Carlo method, we investigate non-Hermitian physics in interacting quantum systems, e.g., various non-Hermitian quantum spin chains. While calculations yield consistent numerical results under open boundary conditions, non-Hermitian quantum systems under periodic boundary conditions observe an unusual concentration of imaginary-time worldlines over nontrivial winding and require enhanced ergodicity between winding-number sectors for proper convergences. Such nontrivial worldline winding is an emergent physical phenomenon that also exists in other non-Hermitian models and analytical approaches. Alongside the non-Hermitian skin effect and the point-gap spectroscopy, it largely extends the identification and analysis of non-Hermitian topological phenomena to quantum systems with interactions, finite temperatures, biorthogonal basis, and periodic boundary conditions in a novel and controlled fashion. Finally, we study the direct physical implications of such nontrivial worldline winding, which bring additional, potentially quasi-long-range contributions to the entanglement entropy.

Maximum-Likelihood-Estimate Hamiltonian learning via efficient and robust quantum likelihood gradient

Given the recent developments in quantum techniques, modeling the physical Hamiltonian of a target quantum many-body system is becoming an increasingly practical and vital research direction. Here, we propose an efficient strategy combining maximum likelihood estimation, gradient descent, and quantum many-body algorithms. Given the measurement outcomes, we optimize the target model Hamiltonian and density operator via a series of descents along the quantum likelihood gradient, which we prove is negative semi-definite with respect to the negative-log-likelihood function. In addition to such optimization efficiency, our maximum-likelihood-estimate Hamiltonian learning respects the locality of a given quantum system, therefore, extends readily to larger systems with available quantum many-body algorithms. Compared with previous approaches, it also exhibits better accuracy and overall stability toward noises, fluctuations, and temperature ranges, which we demonstrate with various examples.
