Fidelity, purity and entanglement of two-mode spatially Gaussian-entangled light fields in Turbulence Atmosphere

In this paper, we investigate the propagation of two-mode spatially Gaussian-entangled quantum light fields passing through the turbulence atmosphere. From the propagation formula of the two-mode wave function in the position representation, we have derived the analytical expressions for the fidelity, purity and logarithmic negativity (entanglement) of the resulting quantum state after the long-distance atmospheric transportation. Based on the derived formulae, the effects of the atmospheric turbulences on the evolutions of quantum properties of the resulting two-mode quantum state are discussed in detail under different input parameters of the initial two-mode quantum state. The results show that the maximal distributing distance of quantum entanglement is strongly dependent on the atmospheric conditions: when the atmospheric turbulence becomes stronger and stronger, the maximal distance becomes shorter and shorter, and both the fidelity and purity decrease quicker and quicker as functions of propagating distances. Under a certain atmospheric condition, with the increasing of the input entanglement of the initial two-mode spatially Gaussian-entangled quantum state, the maximal distributing distance for preserving the entanglement gradually increases and always has a saturated (upper) limitation, and both the evolutions of the fidelity and purity are affected by the input parameters of the initial two-mode quantum state, Finally the optimal parameters of the input two-mode quantum state with the fixed input entanglement are discussed in order to obtain the optimal transfer distribution of the quantum entanglement over a long distance under a certain atmosphere. Our theoretical results are very helpful for building the distribution of the quantum entanglement via free-space atmosphere link.

Formation of optical vortices using coherent laser beam arrays

We present a novel proposal to generate an optical vortex beam by using the coherent-superposition of multi-beams in a radial symmetrical configuration. In terms of the generalized Huygens-Fresnel diffraction integral, we have derived the general propagation expression for the coherent radial laser arrays. Based on the derived formulae, we have analyzed the effects of the beamlet number, the separation distance of the beamlets and the topological charge on the intensity and phase distributions of the resulted beams. Our simulation results show that optical vortices could be efficiently formed and generated due to the interference and superposition effect of all the beamlets, during the propagation process of the coherent radial laser arrays with the initial well-organized phase distributions through the free space. In the focusing system, the resulted beam near the focusing plane has the strong rotation effect with the phase helicity.

More Detailed Descriptions of Locality and Realism

Many experiments have shown that locality-realism theory is at variance with quantum mechanics predictions. Although locality and realism, which are two different conceptions, are given respective definition, the descriptions of the both are a little of abstract when they are applied to real experimental situations. The abstract descriptions result in difficulty for one to judge whether the variance come from locality or realism or both. Here we provide more detailed descriptions of locality and realism, and show that any system being in a pure state or a non-maximally mixed state has property of non-realism. We also present experimental schemes feasible under current technologies to test the non-locality realsim. The connections between non-locality and entanglement and correlation are also discussed.

Effect of Coherence on Radiation Forces acting on a Rayleigh Dielectric Sphere

The radiation forces on a Rayleigh dielectric sphere induced by a partially coherent light beam are greatly affected by the coherence of the light beam. The magnitude of the radiation forces on a dielectric sphere near the focus point greatly decreases as the coherence decreases. For the light beam with good coherence, the radiation force may be used to trap a particle; and for the light beam with intermediate coherence, the radiation force may be used to guide and accelerate a particle.

Extended staggered-flux phases in two-dimensional lattices

Based on the so called $t$-$ϕ$ model in two-dimensional (2D) lattices, we investigate the stabilities of a class of extended staggered-flux (SF) phases (which are the extensions of the $\sqrt{2}\times\sqrt{2}$ SF phase to generalized spatial periods) against the Fermi-liquid phase. Surprisingly, when away from the nesting electron filling, some extended-SF phases take over the dominant SF phase (the $\sqrt{2}\times\sqrt{2}$ SF phase for the square lattice, a $1\times\sqrt{3}$ SF phase for the triangular one), compete with the Fermi-liquid phase in nontrivial patterns, and still occupy significant space in the phase diagram through the advantage in the total electronic kinetic energies. The results can be termed as the generalized Perierls orbital-antiferromagnetic instabilities of the Fermi-liquid phase in 2D lattice-electron models.

Superluminal pulse reflection from a weakly absorbing dielectric slab

Group delay for a reflected light pulse from a weakly absorbing dielectric slab is theoretically investigated, and large negative group delay is found for weak absorption near a resonance of the slab ($Re(kd)=mπ$). The group delays for both the reflected and transmitted pulses will be saturated with the increase of the absorption.

Dynamic Pattern of Finite-Pulsed Beams inside One-dimensional Photonic Band Gap Materials

The dynamics of two-dimensional electromagnetic (EM) pulses through one-dimensional photonic crystals (1DPC) has been theoretically studied. Employing the time expectation integral over the Poynting vector as the arrival time [Phys. Rev. Lett. 84, 2370, (2000)], we show that the superluminal tunneling process of EM pulses is the propagation of the net forward-going Poynting vector through the 1DPC, and the Hartman effect is due to the saturation effect of the arrival time (smaller and smaller time accumulated) of the net forward energy flow caused by the interference effect of the forward and the backward field (from the interfaces of each layer) happened in the region before the 1DPC and in the front part of the 1DPC.

Negative and Positive Lateral Shift of a Light Beam Reflected from a Grounded Slab

We consider the lateral shift of a light beam reflecting from a dielectric slab backed by a metal. It is found that the lateral shift of the reflected beam can be negative while the intensity of reflected beam is almost equal to the incident one under a certain condition. The explanation for the negativity of the lateral shift is given in terms of the interference of the reflected waves from the two interfaces. It is also shown that the lateral shift can be enhanced or suppressed under some other conditions. The numerical calculation on the lateral shift for a realistic Gaussian-shaped beam confirms our theoretical prediction.

Propagation of Fronts and Information in Dispersive Media

We present a general proof based on Kramers-Kronig relations that, in a normal or anomalous dispersive linear medium, any (discontinuitynonanalytic disturbance) in an electromagnetic pulse can not propagate faster than the phase velocity, $c$. Consequently the information carried by the discontinuity (nonanalytical disturbance) can not be transmitted superluminally.
