Strain-induced inter-vortex interaction and vortex lattices in tetragonal superconductors

In superconductors with strong coupling between superconductivity and elasticity manifested in a strong dependence of transition temperature on pressure, there is an additional contribution to inter-vortex interactions due to the strain field generated by vortices. When vortex lines are along the $c$ axis of a tetragonal crystal, a square vortex lattice (VL) is favored at low vortex densities, because the vortex-induced strains contribution to the inter-vortex interactions is long range. At intermediate magnetic fields, the triangular lattice is stabilized. The triangular lattice evolves to the square lattice upon increasing magnetic field, and eventually the system locks to the square structure. We argue, however, that as $B$ approaches $H_{c2}$ the elastic inter-vortex interactions disappear faster than the standard London interactions, so that VL should return to the triangular structure. Our results are compared to VLs observed in the heavy fermion superconductor $\mathrm{CeCoIn_5}$.

Intertwined Orders in Heavy-Fermion Superconductor CeCoIn$_5$

The appearance of spin-density-wave (SDW) magnetic order in the low-temperature and high-field corner of the superconducting phase diagram of CeCoIn$_5$ is unique among unconventional superconductors. The nature of this magnetic $Q$ phase is a matter of current debate. Here, we present the thermal conductivity of CeCoIn$_5$ in a rotating magnetic field, which reveals the presence of an additional order inside the $Q$ phase that is intimately intertwined with the superconducting $d$-wave and SDW orders. A discontinuous change of the thermal conductivity within the $Q$ phase, when the magnetic field is rotated about antinodes of the superconducting $d$-wave order parameter, demands that the additional order must change abruptly together with the recently observed switching of the SDW. A combination of interactions, where spin-orbit coupling orients the SDW, which then selects the secondary $p$-wave pair-density-wave component (with an average amplitude of 20\% of the primary $d$-wave order parameter), accounts for the observed behavior.

Vortices, skyrmions, and chirality waves in frustrated Mott insulators with a quenched periodic array of impurities

Finite-${\mathbf Q}$ magnetic instabilities are rather common in frustrated magnets. When the magnetic susceptibility is maximized at multiple-${\mathbf Q}$ vectors related through lattice symmetry operations, exotic magnetic orderings such as vortex and skyrmion crystals may follow. Here we show that a periodic array of nonmagnetic impurities, which can be realized through charge density wave ordering, leads to a rich phase diagram featuring a plethora of chiral magnetic phases, especially when there is a simple relation between the reciprocal vectors of the impurity superlattice and the magnetic ${\mathbf Q}$-vectors. We also investigate the effect of changing the impurity concentration or disturbing the impurity array with small quenched randomness. Alternative realizations of impurity superlattices are briefly discussed.

Edge instability in a chiral stripe domain under an electric current and skyrmion generation

Motivated by the recent experimental observations on the skyrmion creation by cutting chiral stripe domains under a current drive [Jiang {\emph{et al.}}, Science {\bf{349}}, 283 (2015)], we study the mechanism of skyrmion generation by simulating the dynamics of stripe domains. Our theory for skyrmion generation is based on the fact that there are two half skyrmions attached to the ends of a stripe domain. These half skyrmions move due to the coupling between the skyrmion topological charge and current. As a consequence, the stripe domain is bent or stretched depending on the direction of motion of the half skyrmions. For a large current, skyrmions are created by chopping the stripe domains via strong bending or stretching. Our theory provides an explanation to the experiments and is supported by the new experiments. Furthermore, we predict that skyrmions can also be generated using a Bloch stripe domain under a spin transfer torque which can be realized in B20 compounds.

Distinguishing between $s+id$ and $s+is$ pairing symmetries in multiband superconductors through spontaneous magnetization pattern induced by a defect

The symmetry of the pairing state in iron pnictide superconductor $\mathrm{Ba_{1-x}K_xFe_2As_2}$ is still controversial. At optimal doping ($x \approx 0.4$), it is very likely $s$-wave, but for $x=1$ there are experimental and theoretical arguments for both $s$-wave and $d$-wave. Depending on the choice for $x=1$, intermediate $s+is$ and $s+id$ states have been proposed for intermediate doping $ 0.4 < x < 1$. In both states, the time reversal symmetry is broken and a spontaneous magnetization is allowed. In this work we study a spontaneous magnetization induced by a nonmagnetic defect in the $s+is$ and $s+id$ states by using a perturbation theory and numerical calculations for the Ginzburg-Landau free energy functional. We show that the angular dependence of the magnetization is distinct in these two states due to the difference in symmetry properties of the order parameters. Our results indicate a possible way to distinguish between the $s+is$ and $s+id$ pairing symmetries in multi-band superconductors.

Bubble and Skyrmion Crystals in Frustrated Magnets with Easy-Axis Anisotropy

We clarify the conditions for the emergence of multiple-${\bf Q}$ structures out of lattice and easy-axis spin anisotropy in frustrated magnets. By considering magnets whose exchange interaction has multiple global minima in momentum space, we find that both types of anisotropy stabilize triple-${\bf Q}$ orderings. Moderate anisotropy leads to a magnetic field-induced skyrmion crystal, which evolves into a bubble crystal for increasing spatial or spin anisotropy. The bubble crystal exhibits a quasi-continuous (devil's staircase) temperature dependent ordering wave-vector, characteristic of the competition between frustrated exchange and strong easy-axis anisotropy.

Dynamics of Dirac strings and monopole-like excitations in chiral magnets under a current drive

Skyrmion lines in metallic chiral magnets carry an emergent magnetic field experienced by the conduction electrons. The inflow and outflow of this field across a closed surface is not necessarily equal, thus it allows for the existence of emergent monopoles. One example is a segment of skyrmion line inside a crystal, where a monopole and antimonopole pair is connected by the emergent magnetic flux line. This is a realization of Dirac string-like excitations. Here we study the dynamics of monopoles in chiral magnets under an electric current. We show that in the process of creation of skyrmion lines, skyrmion line segments are first created via the proliferation of monopoles and antimonopoles. Then these line segments join and span the whole system through the annihilation of monopoles. The skyrmion lines are destroyed via the proliferation of monopoles and antimonopoles at high currents, resulting in a chiral liquid phase. We also propose to create the monopoles in a controlled way by applying an inhomogenous current to a crystal. Remarkably, an electric field component in the magnetic field direction proportional to the current squared in the low current region is induced by the motion of distorted skyrmion lines, in addition to the Hall and longitudinal voltage. The existence of monopoles can be inferred from transport or imaging measurements.

Density functional theory study of skyrmion pinning by atomic defects in MnSi

A magnetic skyrmion observed experimentally in chiral magnets is a topologically protected spin texture. For their unique properties, such as high mobility under current drive, skyrmions have huge potential for applications in next-generation spintronic devices. Defects naturally occurring in magnets have profound effects on the static and dynamical properties of skyrmions. In this work, we study the effect of an atomic defect on a skyrmion using the first-principles calculations within the density functional theory, taking MnSi as an example. By substituting one site of Mn or Si with different elements, we can tune the pinning energy. The effects of pinning by an atomic defect can be understood qualitatively within a phenomenological model.

Ginzburg-Landau theory for skyrmions in inversion-symmetric magnets with competing interactions

Magnetic skyrmions have attracted considerable attention recently for their huge potential in spintronic applications. Generally skyrmions are big compared to the atomic lattice constant, which allows for the Ginzburg-Landau type description in the continuum limit. Such a description successfully captures the main experimental observations on skyrmions in B20 compound without inversion symmetry. Skyrmions can also exist in inversion-symmetric magnets with competing interactions. Here we derive a general Ginzburg-Landau theory for skyrmions in these magnets valid in the long wavelength limit. We study the unusual static and dynamical properties of skyrmions based on the derived Ginzburg-Landau theory. We show that an easy axis spin anisotropy is sufficient to stabilize a skyrmion lattice. Interestingly, the skyrmion in inversion-symmetric magnets has a new internal degree of freedom associated with the rotation of helicity, i.e. the "spin" of the skyrmion as a particle, in addition to the usual translational motion of skyrmions (orbital motion). The orbital and spin degree of freedoms of an individual skyrmion can couple to each other, and give rise to unusual behavior that is absent for the skyrmions stabilized by the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction. The derived Ginzburg-Landau theory provides a convenient and general framework to discuss skyrmion physics and will facilitate the search for skyrmions in inversion-symmetric magnets.

Non-circular skyrmion and its anisotropic response in thin films of chiral magnets under tilted magnetic field

We study the equilibrium and dynamical properties of skyrmions in thin films of chiral magnets with oblique magnetic field. The shape of an individual skyrmion is non-circular and the skyrmion density decreases with the tilt angle from the normal of films. As a result, the interaction between two skyrmions depends on the relative angle between them in addition to their separation. The triangular lattice of skyrmions under a perpendicular magnetic field is distorted into a centered rectangular lattice for a tilted magnetic field. For a low skyrmion density, skyrmions form a chain like structure. The dynamical response of the non-circular skyrmions depends on the direction of external currents.

Topological defects as relics of emergent continuous symmetry and Higgs condensation of disorder in ferroelectrics

Lars Onsager and Richard Feynman envisioned that the three-dimensional (3D) superfluid-to-normal $λ$ transition in $^{4}$He occurs through the proliferation of vortices. This process should hold for every phase transition in the same universality class. The role of topological defects in symmetry-breaking phase transitions has become a prime topic in cosmology and high-temperature superconductivity, even though direct imaging of these defects is challenging. Here we show that the U(1) continuous symmetry that emerges at the ferroelectric critical point of multiferroic hexagonal manganites leads to a similar proliferation of vortices. Moreover, the disorder field (vortices) is coupled to an emergent U(1) gauge field, which becomes massive by means of the Higgs mechanism when vortices condense (span the whole system) upon heating above the ferroelectric transition temperature. Direct imaging of the vortex network in hexagonal manganites offers unique experimental access to this dual description of the ferroelectric transition, while enabling tests of the Kibble-Zurek mechanism.

Skyrmion fractionalization and merons in chiral magnets with easy-plane anisotropy

We study the equilibrium phase diagram of ultrathin chiral magnets with easy-plane anisotropy $A$. The vast triangular skyrmion lattice phase that is stabilized by an external magnetic field evolves continuously as a function of increasing $A$ into a regime in which nearest-neighbor skyrmions start overlapping with each other. This overlap leads to a continuous reduction of the skyrmion number from its quantized value $Q=1$ and to the emergence of antivortices at the center of the triangles formed by nearest-neighbor skyrmions. The antivortices also carry a small "skyrmion number" $Q_A \ll 1$ that grows as a function of increasing $A$. The system undergoes a first order phase transition into a square vortex-antivortex lattice at a critical value of $A$. Finally, a canted ferromagnetic state becomes stable through another first order transition for a large enough anisotropy $A$. Interestingly enough, this first order transition is accompanied by {\it metastable} meron solutions.

Ground state, collective mode, phase soliton and vortex in multiband superconductors

This article reviews theoretical and experimental work on the novel physics in multiband superconductors. Multiband superconductors are characterized by multiple superconducting energy gaps in different bands with interaction between Cooper pairs in these bands. The discovery of prominent multiband superconductors $\mathrm{MgB_2}$ and later iron-based superconductors has triggered enormous interests in multiband superconductors. Most recently discovered superconductors exhibit multiband features. The multiband superconductors possess novel properties that are not shared by their single-band counterpart. Examples include the time-reversal symmetry broken state in multiband superconductors with frustrated interband couplings, the collective oscillation of number of Cooper pairs between different bands, known as the Leggett mode, the phase soliton and fractional vortex, which are the main focus of this review. This review presents a survey of a wide range of theoretical exploration and experimental investigations of novel physics in multiband superconductors. Vast information derived from these studies is shown to highlight unusual and unique properties of multiband superconductors, and to reveal the challenges and opportunities in the research on the multiband superconductivity.

Dissipation in Josephson tunneling junctions at low temperatures

It is important to know the decoherence mechanism of a qubit based on Josephson junctions. At low temperatures, as quasiparticle concentration becomes exponentially small, one needs to consider energy transfer from tunneling electrons to other degrees of freedom to find dissipation in Josephson junctions and decoherence in qubits. Here we discuss the energy transfer to two-level systems, i.e. the transitions between two different configurations of ions inside insulating layer separated by a potential barrier. We derive a general equation of motion for the phase difference between two superconducting electrodes and we find a retarded dissipation term due to electromagnetic mechanism and also contribution due to electron tunneling mechanism. Using the equation of motion we calculate the decay of Rabi oscillations and frequency shift in qubits due to the presence of the two-level systems. In the long time limit our results coincide with those obtained by Martinis et al. [J. M. Martinis et al.. Phys. Rev. Lett. 95, 210503 (2005)] within the Fermi's Golden rule approach up to a numerical factor.

Magnetic field induced phases in anisotropic triangular antiferromagnets: application to $\mathrm{CuCrO_2}$

We introduce a minimal spin model for describing the magnetic properties of $\mathrm{CuCrO_2}$. Our Monte Carlo simulations of this model reveal a rich magnetic field induced phase diagram, which explains the measured field dependence of the electric polarization. The sequence of phase transitions between different mutiferroic states arises from a subtle interplay between spatial and spin anisotropy, magnetic frustration and thermal fluctuations. Our calculations are compared to new measurements up to 92 T.

AC current generation in chiral magnetic insulators and skyrmion motion induced by the spin Seebeck effect

We show that a temperature gradient induces an ac electric current in multiferroic insulators when the sample is embedded in a circuit. We also show that a thermal gradient can be used to move magnetic skyrmions in insulating chiral magnets: the induced magnon flow from the hot to the cold region drives the skyrmions in the opposite direction via a magnonic spin transfer torque. Both results are combined to compute the effect of skyrmion motion on the ac current generation and demonstrate that skyrmions in insulators are a promising route for spin caloritronics applications.

Mutual synchronization of two stacks of intrinsic Josephson junctions in cuprate superconductors

Certain high-$T_c$ cuprate superconductors, which naturally realize a stack of Josephson junctions, thus can be used to generate electromagnetic waves in the terahertz region. A plate-like single crystal with $10^4$ junctions without cavity resonance was proposed to achieve strong radiation. For this purpose, it is required to synchronize the Josephson plasma oscillation in all junctions. In this work, we propose to use two stacks of junctions shunted in parallel to achieve synchronization. The two stacks are mutually synchronized in the whole IV curve, and there is a phase shift between the plasma oscillation in the two stacks. The phase shift is nonzero when the number of junctions in different stacks is the same, while it can be arbitrary when the number of junctions is different. This phase shift can be tuned continuously by applying a magnetic field when all the junctions are connected by superconducting wires.

Stiffness from Disorder in Triangular-Lattice Ising Thin Films

We study the triangular lattice Ising model with a finite number of vertically stacked layers and demonstrate a low temperature reentrance of two Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless transitions, which results in an extended disordered regime down to $T=0$. Numerical results are complemented with the derivation of an effective low-temperature dimer theory. Contrary to order by disorder, we present a new scenario for fluctuation-induced ordering in frustrated spin systems. While short-range spin-spin correlations are enhanced by fluctuations, quasi-long-range ordering is precluded at low enough temperatures by proliferation of topological defects.
