GSNet: Joint Vehicle Pose and Shape Reconstruction with Geometrical and Scene-aware Supervision

We present a novel end-to-end framework named as GSNet (Geometric and Scene-aware Network), which jointly estimates 6DoF poses and reconstructs detailed 3D car shapes from single urban street view. GSNet utilizes a unique four-way feature extraction and fusion scheme and directly regresses 6DoF poses and shapes in a single forward pass. Extensive experiments show that our diverse feature extraction and fusion scheme can greatly improve model performance. Based on a divide-and-conquer 3D shape representation strategy, GSNet reconstructs 3D vehicle shape with great detail (1352 vertices and 2700 faces). This dense mesh representation further leads us to consider geometrical consistency and scene context, and inspires a new multi-objective loss function to regularize network training, which in turn improves the accuracy of 6D pose estimation and validates the merit of jointly performing both tasks. We evaluate GSNet on the largest multi-task ApolloCar3D benchmark and achieve state-of-the-art performance both quantitatively and qualitatively. Spin dynamics of a magnetic Weyl semimetal Sr$_{1-x}$Mn$_{1-y}$Sb$_2$

Dirac matters provide a platform for exploring the interplay of their carriers with other quantum phenomena. Sr$_{1-x}$Mn$_{1-y}$Sb$_2$ has been proposed to be a magnetic Weyl semimetal and provides an excellent platform to study the coupling between Weyl fermions and magnons. Here, we report comprehensive inelastic neutron scattering (INS) measurements on single crystals of Sr$_{1-x}$Mn$_{1-y}$Sb$_2$, which have been well characterized by magnetization and magnetotransport measurements, both of which demonstrate that the material is a topologically nontrivial semimetal. The INS spectra clearly show a spin gap of $\sim6$ meV. The dispersion in the magnetic Mn layer extends up to about 76 meV, while that between the layers has a narrow band width of 6 meV. We find that the linear spin-wave theory using a Heisenberg spin Hamiltonian can reproduce the experimental spectra with the following parameters: a nearest-neighbor ($SJ_1\sim28.0$ meV) and next-nearest-neighbor in-plane exchange interaction ($SJ_2\sim9.3$ meV) , interlayer exchange coupling ($SJ_c\sim-0.1$ meV), and spin anisotropy constant ($SD\sim-0.07$ meV). Despite the coexistence of Weyl fermions and magnons, we find no clear evidence that the magnetic dynamics are influenced by the Weyl fermions in Sr$_{1-x}$Mn$_{1-y}$Sb$_2$, possibly because that the Weyl fermions and magnons reside in the Sb and Mn layers separately, and the interlayer coupling is weak due to the quasi-two-dimensional nature of the material, as also evident from the small $SJ_c$ of -0.1 meV.

Patterns and driving forces of dimensionality-dependent charge density waves in 2H-type transition metal dichalcogenides

Two-dimensional (2D) materials have become a fertile playground for the exploration and manipulation of novel collective electronic states. Recent experiments have unveiled a variety of robust 2D orders in highly-crystalline materials ranging from magnetism to ferroelectricity and from superconductivity to charge density wave (CDW) instability. The latter, in particular, appears in diverse patterns even within the same family of materials with isoelectronic species. Furthermore, how they evolve with dimensionality has so far remained elusive. Here we propose a general framework that provides a unfied picture of CDW ordering in the 2H polytype of four isoelectronic transition metal dichalcogenides 2H-MX$_2$ (M=Nb, Ta and X=S, Se). We first show experimentally that whilst NbSe$_2$ exhibits a strongly enhanced CDW order in the 2D limit, the opposite trend exists for TaSe$_2$ and TaS$_2$, with CDW being entirely absent in NbS$_2$ from its bulk to the monolayer. Such distinct behaviours are then demonstrated to be the result of a subtle, yet profound, competition between three factors: ionic charge transfer, electron-phonon coupling, and the spreading extension of the electronic wave functions. Despite its simplicity, our approach can, in essence, be applied to other quasi-2D materials to account for their CDW response at different thicknesses, thereby shedding new light on this intriguing quantum phenomenon and its underlying mechanisms.

Facial age estimation by deep residual decision making

Residual representation learning simplifies the optimization problem of learning complex functions and has been widely used by traditional convolutional neural networks. However, it has not been applied to deep neural decision forest (NDF). In this paper we incorporate residual learning into NDF and the resulting model achieves state-of-the-art level accuracy on three public age estimation benchmarks while requiring less memory and computation. We further employ gradient-based technique to visualize the decision-making process of NDF and understand how it is influenced by facial image inputs. The code and pre-trained models will be available at https://github.com/Nicholasli1995/VisualizingNDF.

Evidence for singular-phonon-induced nematic superconductivity in a topological superconductor candidate Sr$_{0.1}$Bi$_2$Se$_3$

Superconductivity mediated by phonons is typically conventional, exhibiting a momentum-independent s-wave pairing function, due to the isotropic interactions between electrons and phonons along different crystalline directions. Here, by performing inelastic neutron scattering measurements on a superconducting single crystal of Sr0.1Bi2Se3, a prime candidate for realizing topological superconductivity by doping the topological insulator Bi2Se3, we find that there exist highly anisotropic phonons, with the linewidths of the acoustic phonons increasing substantially at long wavelengths, but only for those along the [001] direction. This observation indicates a large and singular electron-phonon coupling at small momenta, which we propose to give rise to the exotic p-wave nematic superconducting pairing in the MxBi2Se3 (M = Cu, Sr, Nb) superconductor family. Therefore, we show these superconductors to be example systems where electron-phonon interaction can induce more exotic superconducting pairing than the s-wave, consistent with the topological superconductivity.

Visualizing the decision-making process in deep neural decision forest

Deep neural decision forest (NDF) achieved remarkable performance on various vision tasks via combining decision tree and deep representation learning. In this work, we first trace the decision-making process of this model and visualize saliency maps to understand which portion of the input influence it more for both classification and regression problems. We then apply NDF on a multi-task coordinate regression problem and demonstrate the distribution of routing probabilities, which is vital for interpreting NDF yet not shown for regression problems. The pre-trained model and code for visualization will be available at https://github.com/Nicholasli1995/VisualizingNDF

Superconductivity in Potassium-intercalated Td-WTe2

To realize topological superconductor is one of the most attracting topics because of its great potential in quantum computation. In this study, we successfully intercalate potassium (K) into the van der Waals gap of type II Weyl semimetal WTe2, and discover the superconducting state in KxWTe2 through both electrical transport and scanning tunneling spectroscopy measurements. The superconductivity exhibits an evident anisotropic behavior. Moreover, we also uncover the coexistence of superconductivity and the positive magneto-resistance state. Structural analysis substantiates the negligible lattice expansion induced by the intercalation, therefore suggesting K-intercalated WTe2 still hosts the topological nontrivial state. These results indicate that the K-intercalated WTe2 may be a promising candidate to explore the topological superconductor.

Deep Hierarchical Machine: a Flexible Divide-and-Conquer Architecture

We propose Deep Hierarchical Machine (DHM), a model inspired from the divide-and-conquer strategy while emphasizing representation learning ability and flexibility. A stochastic routing framework as used by recent deep neural decision/regression forests is incorporated, but we remove the need to evaluate unnecessary computation paths by utilizing a different topology and introducing a probabilistic pruning technique. We also show a specified version of DHM (DSHM) for efficiency, which inherits the sparse feature extraction process as in traditional decision tree with pixel-difference feature. To achieve sparse feature extraction, we propose to utilize sparse convolution operation in DSHM and show one possibility of introducing sparse convolution kernels by using local binary convolution layer. DHM can be applied to both classification and regression problems, and we validate it on standard image classification and face alignment tasks to show its advantages over past architectures.

Recent progress on magnetic-field studies on quantum-spin-liquid candidates

Quantum spin liquids (QSLs) represent a novel state of matter in which quantum fluctuations prevent conventional magnetic order from being established, and the spins remain disordered even at zero temperature. There have been many theoretical developments proposing various QSL states. On the other hand, experimental movement was relatively slow largely due to limitations on the candidate materials and difficulties in the measurements. In recent years, the experimental progress has been accelerated. In this topical review, we give a brief summary of experiments on the QSL candidates under magnetic fields. We arrange our discussions by two categories: i) Geometrically-frustrated systems, including triangular-lattice compounds YbMgGaO4 and YbZnGaO4, kappa-(BEDT-TTF)2Cu2(CN)3, and EtMe3Sb[Pd(dmit)2]2, and kagome system ZnCu3(OH)6Cl2; ii) the Kitaev material alpha-RuCl3. Among these, we will pay special attention to alpha-RuCl3, which has been intensively studied by our and other groups recently. We will present evidence that both supports and unsupports the QSL ground state for these materials, based on which we give several perspectives to stimulate further research activities.

Discovery of coexisting Dirac and triply degenerate magnons in a three-dimensional antiferromagnet

Topological magnons are emergent quantum spin excitations featured by magnon bands crossing linearly at the points dubbed nodes, analogous to fermions in topological electronic systems. Experimental realization of topological magnons in three dimensions has not been reported so far. Here, by measuring spin excitations (magnons) of a three-dimensional antiferromagnet Cu$_{3}$TeO$_{6}$ with inelastic neutron scattering, we provide direct spectroscopic evidence for the coexistence of symmetry-protected Dirac and triply degenerate nodes, the latter involving three-component magnons beyond the Dirac-Weyl framework. Our theoretical calculations show that the observed topological magnon band structure can be well described by the linear-spin-wave theory based on a Hamiltonian dominated by the nearest-neighbour exchange interaction $J_1$. As such, we showcase Cu$_{3}$TeO$_{6}$ as an example system where Dirac and triply degenerate magnonic nodal excitations coexist, demonstrate an exotic topological state of matter, and provide a fresh ground to explore the topological properties in quantum materials.

Unusual phonon density of states and response to the superconducting transition in the In-doped topological crystalline insulator Pb$_{0.5}$Sn$_{0.5}$Te

We present inelastic neutron scattering results of phonons in (Pb$_{0.5}$Sn$_{0.5}$)$_{1-x}$In$_x$Te powders, with $x=0$ and 0.3. The $x=0$ sample is a topological crystalline insulator, and the $x=0.3$ sample is a superconductor with a bulk superconducting transition temperature $T_c$ of 4.7 K. In both samples, we observe unexpected van Hove singularities in the phonon density of states at energies of 1--2.5 meV, suggestive of local modes. On cooling the superconducting sample through $T_c$, there is an enhancement of these features for energies below twice the superconducting-gap energy. We further note that the superconductivity in (Pb$_{0.5}$Sn$_{0.5}$)$_{1-x}$In$_x$Te occurs in samples with normal-state resistivities of order 10 m$Ω$~cm, indicative of bad-metal behavior. Calculations based on density functional theory suggest that the superconductivity is easily explainable in terms of electron-phonon coupling; however, they completely miss the low-frequency modes and do not explain the large resistivity. While the bulk superconducting state of (Pb$_{0.5}$Sn$_{0.5}$)$_{0.7}$In$_{0.3}$Te appears to be driven by phonons, a proper understanding will require ideas beyond simple BCS theory.

Evidence for a Dirac nodal-line semimetal in SrAs$_{3}$

Dirac nodal-line semimetals with the linear bands crossing along a line or loop, represent a new topological state of matter. Here, by carrying out magnetotransport measurements and performing first-principle calculations, we demonstrate that such a state has been realized in high-quality single crystals of SrAs3. We obtain the nontrivial pi Berry phase by analysing the Shubnikov-de Haas quantum oscillations. We also observe a robust negative longitudinal magnetoresistance induced by the chiral anomaly. Accompanying first-principles calculations identify that a single hole pocket enclosing the loop nodes is responsible for these observations.

Spin-glass ground state in a triangular-lattice compound YbZnGaO$_4$

We report on comprehensive results identifying the ground state of a triangular-lattice structured YbZnGaO$_4$ to be spin glass, including no long-range magnetic order, prominent broad excitation continua, and absence of magnetic thermal conductivity. More crucially, from the ultralow-temperature a.c. susceptibility measurements, we unambiguously observe frequency-dependent peaks around 0.1 K, indicating the spin-glass ground state. We suggest this conclusion to hold also for its sister compound YbMgGaO$_4$, which is confirmed by the observation of spin freezing at low temperatures. We consider disorder and frustration to be the main driving force for the spin-glass phase.

Suppression of the antiferromagnetic order when approaching the superconducting state in a phase-separated crystal of K$_x$Fe$_{2-y}$Se$_2$

We have combined elastic and inelastic neutron scattering techniques, magnetic susceptibility and resistivity measurements to study single-crystal samples of K$_x$Fe$_{2-y}$Se$_2$, which contain the superconducting phase that has a transition temperature of $\sim$31 K. In the inelastic neutron scattering measurements, we observe both the spin-wave excitations resulting from the block antiferromagnetic ordered phase and the resonance that is associated with the superconductivity in the superconducting phase, demonstrating the coexistence of these two orders. From the temperature dependence of the intensity of the magnetic Bragg peaks, we find that well before entering the superconducting state, the development of the magnetic order is interrupted, at $\sim$42 K. We consider this result to be evidence for the physical separation of the antiferromagnetic and superconducting phases; the suppression is possibly due to the proximity effect of the superconducting fluctuations on the antiferromagnetic order.

Spin-wave excitations evidencing the Kitaev interaction in single crystalline $α$-RuCl$_3$

Kitaev interactions underlying a quantum spin liquid have been long sought, but experimental data from which their strengths can be determined directly is still lacking. Here, by carrying out inelastic neutron scattering measurements on high-quality single crystals of $α$-RuCl$_3$, we observe spin-wave spectra with a gap of $\sim$2 meV around the M point of the two-dimensional Brillouin zone. We derive an effective-spin model in the strong-coupling limit based on energy bands obtained from first-principle calculations, and find that the anisotropic Kitaev interaction $K$ term and the isotropic antiferromagentic off-diagonal exchange interaction $Γ$ term are significantly larger than the Heisenberg exchange coupling $J$ term. Our experimental data can be well fit using an effective-spin model with $K=-6.8$ meV and $Γ=9.5$ meV. These results demonstrate explicitly that Kitaev physics is realized in real materials.

Increasing efficiency of a wireless energy transfer system by spatial translational transformation

An optical translational projector (OTP) designed by transformation optics is applied to improve the energy transfer efficiency in a wireless energy transfer (WET) system. Numerical simulation results show our OTP can greatly enhance the energy transfer efficiency (e.g. nearly 2 orders, compared to the case without our OTP) in WET systems, which is much larger than previous methods (e.g. magnetic super-lens). A 3D reduced OTP composed by layered isotropic magnetic materials is designed, whose performance has been verified by 3D numerical simulations in 10MHz. We also study the influence of loss of metamaterials on the performance of proposed OTP.

Real-space characterization of reactivity towards water at Bi2Te3(111) surface

Surface reactivity is important in modifying the physical and chemical properties of surface sensitive materials, such as the topological insulators (TIs). Even though many studies addressing the reactivity of TIs towards external gases have been reported, it is still under heavy debate whether and how the topological insulators react with H$_2$O. Here, we employ scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) to directly probe the surface reaction of Bi$_2$Te$_3$ towards H$_2$O. Surprisingly, it is found that only the top quintuple layer is reactive to H$_2$O, resulting in a hydrated Bi bilayer as well as some Bi islands, which passivate the surface and prevent from the subsequent reaction. A reaction mechanism is proposed with H$_2$Te and hydrated Bi as the products. Unexpectedly, our study indicates the reaction with water is intrinsic and not dependent on any surface defects. Since water inevitably exists, these findings provide key information when considering the reactions of Bi$_2$Te$_3$ with residual gases or atmosphere.

Delay-Aware Dynamic Resource Management for High-Speed Railway Wireless Communications

In this paper, we investigate the delay-aware dynamic resource management problem for multi-service transmission in high-speed railway wireless communications, with a focus on resource allocation among the services and power control along the time. By taking account of average delay requirements and power constraints, the considered problem is formulated into a stochastic optimization problem, rather than pursuing the traditional convex optimization means. Inspired by Lyapunov optimization theory, the intractable stochastic optimization problem is transformed into a tractable deterministic optimization problem, which is a mixed-integer resource management problem. By exploiting the specific problem structure, the mixed-integer resource management problem is equivalently transformed into a single variable problem, which can be effectively solved by the golden section search method with guaranteed global optimality. Finally, we propose a dynamic resource management algorithm to solve the original stochastic optimization problem. Simulation results show the advantage of the proposed dynamic algorithm and reveal that there exists a fundamental tradeoff between delay requirements and power consumption.
