Energy-Momentum Tensor and D-term of Baryons in Top-down Holographic QCD

We study the energy-momentum tensor of a baryon in a top-down holographic QCD. In holographic QCD, the baryons are represented as solitons in a 5-dimensional gauge theory. We obtain the soliton solution by solving the equations of motion numerically. Using this result, the energy-momentum tensor and related quantities such as the mass, mean square radii, and the D-term (druck term) are computed. The evaluated D-term is about -2.05, whose absolute value is significantly larger than that in the previous work arXiv:2206.06578.

Generalised anomalies, QCD$_4$, and holography

During the last decade, the notion of an 't Hooft anomaly has been generalised to the case of discrete symmetries. An interesting instance, discussed by Tanizaki, is the mixed anomaly between the discrete axial symmetry and the flavour and baryonic symmetries in massless QCD$_4$. The goal of this note is to provide a derivation of this anomaly from a top-down holographic dual of QCD$_4$. It is found that the topological couplings in the bulk supergravity dual of the D4-D8 system encode Tanizaki's anomaly, once fluctuations around the bulk gauge fields are turned on. A technical challenge for this computation is the difficulty in maintaining gauge invariance of supergravity theories in the presence of D-branes. To overcome this issue, a compact formulation of the flux sector of (massive) type IIA supergravity in the presence of D8 branes is presented. A crucial ingredient in the analysis is the need for smearing the D8 branes, in order to impose $τ$-shift invariance on the fluctuation ansatz.

High-Energy Fixed-Angle Meson Scattering and the Constituent Counting Rule in Holographic QCD

We investigate the high-energy fixed-angle scattering of pions and $ρ$-mesons in a bottom-up holographic QCD model. To this end, we generalise the approach of Polchinski and Strassler arXiv:hep-th/0109174 to write an ansatz for meson scattering amplitudes based on superstring scattering amplitudes in asymptotically AdS space. We demonstrate that our generalisation of the Polchinski--Strassler proposal is necessary to describe $ρ$-meson scattering consistently with the Nambu--Goldstone boson equivalence theorem. Our results for pion and $ρ$-meson scattering amplitudes are in agreement with the constituent counting rule found in QCD. Moreover, our proposal for 2-to-2 scattering amplitudes provides a method for computing scattering angle dependence.

End of the World Branes from Dimensional Reduction

We consider dimensional reduction of cigar geometries which are obtained by a Wick rotation of black hole solutions. Originally the cigar geometry is smooth around the tip, but after the dimensional reduction along the Euclidean time direction, there appears an end-of-the-world brane (ETW brane). We derive the tension of the brane by two methods: bulk equations of motion and boundary equations of motion. In particular, for AdS7-soliton cross S4 and AdS4-soliton cross S7 backgrounds in M-theory, we find that the tension of the emerging ETW branes behaves as exp(-3Phi) in the string frame. This indicates the existence of such ETW branes in the strongly coupled regime of type 0A string theory.

Nucleon D-term in holographic QCD

The D-term is one of the conserved charges of hadrons defined as the forward limit of the gravitational form factor $D(t)$. We calculate the nucleon's D-term in a holographic QCD model in which the nucleon is described as a soliton in five dimensions. We show that the form factor $D(t)$ is saturated by the exchanges of infinitely many $0^{++}$ and $2^{++}$ glueballs dual to transverse-traceless metric fluctuations on the Wick rotated AdS$_7$ black hole geometry. We refer to this phenomenon as `glueball dominance', in perfect analogy to the vector meson dominance of the electromagnetic form factors. However, the value at vanishing momentum transfer $D(t=0)$ can be interpreted as due to the exchange of pairs of pions and infinitely many vector and axial-vector mesons without any reference to glueballs. We find that the D-term is slightly negative as a result of a cancellation between the isovector and isoscalar meson contributions.

Anomaly and Superconnection

We study anomalies of fermions with spacetime dependent mass. Using Fujikawa's method, it is found that the anomalies associated with the $U(N)_+\times U(N)_-$ chiral symmetry and $U(N)$ flavor symmetry for even and odd dimensions, respectively, can be written in terms of superconnections. In particular, the anomaly for a vector-like $U(1)$ symmetry is given by the Chern character of the superconnection in both even and odd dimensional cases. It is also argued that the non-Abelian anomaly for a system in D-dimensional spacetime is characterized by a (D+2)-form part of the Chern character of the superconnection which generalizes the usual anomaly polynomial for the massless case. These results enable us to analyze anomalies in the systems with interfaces and spacetime boundaries in a unified way. Applications to index theorems, including Atiyah-Patodi-Singer index theorem and Callias-type index theorem, are also discussed. In addition, we give a natural string theory interpretation of these results.

String Theory and non-Riemannian Geometry

The $\mathbf{O}(D,D)$ covariant generalized metric, postulated as a truly fundamental variable, can describe novel geometries where the notion of Riemannian metric ceases to exist. Here we quantize a closed string upon such backgrounds and identify flat, anomaly-free, non-Riemannian string vacua in the familiar critical dimension, $D{=26}$ (or $D{=10}$). Remarkably, the whole BRST closed string spectrum is restricted to just one level with no tachyon, and matches the linearized equations of motion of Double Field Theory. Taken as an internal space, our non-Riemannian vacua may open up novel avenues alternative to traditional string compactification.

Stringy excited baryons in holographic QCD

We analyze excited baryon states using a holographic dual of QCD that is defined on the basis of an intersecting D4/D8-brane system. Studies of baryons in this model have been made by regarding them as a topological soliton of a gauge theory on a five-dimensional curved spacetime. However, this allows one to obtain only a certain class of baryons. We attempt to present a framework such that a whole set of excited baryons can be treated in a systematic way. This is achieved by employing the original idea of Witten, which states that a baryon is described by a system composed of $N_c$ open strings emanating from a baryon vertex. We argue that this system can be formulated by an ADHM-type matrix model of Hashimoto-Iizuka-Yi together with an infinite tower of the open string massive modes. Using this setup, we work out the spectra of excited baryons and compare them with the experimental data. In particular, we derive a formula of the nucleon Regge trajectory assuming that the excited nucleons lying the trajectory are characterized by the excitation of a single open string attached on the baryon vertex.

Vacuum Structure of Charge k Two-Dimensional QED and Dynamics of an Anti D-String Near an O1- plane

We study the vacuum structure of N_f flavour two-dimensional QED with an arbitrary integer charge k. We find that the axial symmetry is spontaneously broken from Z_(kN_f) to Z_(N_f) due to the non-vanishing condensate of a flavour singlet operator, resulting in k degenerate vacua. An explicit construction of the k vacua is given by using a non-commutative algebra obtained as a central extension of the Z_(kN_f) discrete axial symmetry and Z_k 1-form (center) symmetry, which represents the mixed 't Hooft anomaly between them. We then give a string theory realization of such a system with k=2 and N_f=8 by putting an anti D-string in the vicinity of an orientifold O1- plane and study its dynamics using the two-dimensional gauge theory realized on it. We calculate the potential between the anti D-string and the O1- plane and find repulsion in both weak and strong coupling regimes of the two dimensional gauge theory, corresponding to long and short distances, respectively. We also calculate the potential for the (Q,-1) string (the bound state of an anti D-string and Q fundamental strings) located close to the O1- plane. The result is non-perturbative in the string coupling.

Supersymmetric Gauge Theory with Space-time Dependent Couplings

We study deformations of ${\cal N}=4$ supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory with couplings and masses depending on space-time. The conditions to preserve part of the supersymmetry are derived and a lot of solutions of these conditions are found. The main example is the case with $ISO(1,1)\times SO(3)\times SO(3)$ symmetry, in which couplings, as well as masses and the theta parameter, can depend on two spatial coordinates. In the case $ISO(1,1)$ is enhanced to $ISO(1,2)$, it reproduces the supersymmetric Janus configuration found by Gaiotto and Witten. When $SO(3)\times SO(3)$ is enhanced to $SO(6)$, it agrees with the world-volume theory of D3-branes embedded in F-theory (a background with 7-branes in type IIB string theory). We also find the general solution of the supersymmetry conditions for the cases with $ISO(1,1)\times SO(2)\times SO(4)$ symmetry. The cases with time dependent couplings and/or masses are also considered.

Deformation of ${\cal N}=4$ SYM with varying couplings via fluxes and intersecting branes

We study deformations of ${\cal N}=4$ supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory with space-time dependent couplings by embedding probe D3-branes in supergravity backgrounds with non-trivial fluxes. The effective action on the world-volume of the D3-branes is analyzed and a map between the deformation parameters and the fluxes is obtained. As an explicit example, we consider D3-branes in a background corresponding to $(p,q)$ 5-branes intersecting them and show that the effective theory on the D3-branes precisely agrees with the supersymmetric Janus configuration found by Gaiotto and Witten in arXiv:0804.2907 . D3-branes in an intersecting D3-brane background is also analyzed and the D3-brane effective action reproduces one of the supersymmetric configurations with $ISO(1,1)\times SO(2)\times SO(4)$ symmetry found in our previous paper arXiv:1710.09792 .

Chern-Simons 5-form and Holographic Baryons

In the top-down holographic model of QCD based on D4/D8-branes in type IIA string theory and some of the bottom up models, the low energy effective theory of mesons is described by a 5 dimensional Yang-Mills-Chern-Simons theory in a certain curved background with two boundaries. The 5 dimensional Chern-Simons term plays a crucial role to reproduce the correct chiral anomaly in 4 dimensional massless QCD. However, there are some subtle ambiguities in the definition of the Chern-Simons term for the cases with topologically non-trivial gauge bundles, which include the configurations with baryons. In particular, for the cases with three flavors, it was pointed out by Hata and Murata that the naive Chern-Simons term does not lead to an important constraint on the baryon spectrum, which is needed to pick out the correct baryon spectrum observed in nature. In this paper, we propose a formulation of well-defined Chern-Simons term which can be used for the cases with baryons, and show that it recovers the correct baryon constraint as well as the chiral anomaly in QCD.

Holographic Chern-Simons Defects

We study SU(N) Yang-Mills-Chern-Simons theory in the presence of defects that shift the Chern-Simons level from a holographic point of view by embedding the system in string theory. The model is a D3-D7 system in Type IIB string theory, whose gravity dual is given by the AdS soliton background with probe D7-branes attaching to the AdS boundary along the defects. We holographically renormalize the free energy of the defect system with sources, from which we obtain the correlation functions for certain operators naturally associated to these defects. We find interesting phase transitions when the separation of the defects as well as the temperature are varied. We also discuss some implications for the Fractional Quantum Hall Effect and for two-dimensional QCD.

Confinement and Dynamical Symmetry Breaking in non-SUSY Gauge Theory from S-duality in String Theory

We discuss an attempt to understand confinement and dynamical symmetry breaking in a 4-dimensional non-supersymmetric gauge theory using S-duality in type IIB string theory. The electric theory is a USp(2n) gauge theory and its magnetic dual is argued to be an SO(2n) or SO(2n-1) gauge theory. These theories are obtained as the low-energy effective theory of O3-D3bar systems in type IIB string theory, which are related by S-duality. Confinement and dynamical symmetry breaking in the USp(2n) gauge theory are caused by the condensation of scalar fields in the magnetic dual description, which is consistent with the scenario of the dual Meissner mechanism for the confinement.

Mesons as Open Strings in a Holographic Dual of QCD

We study meson spectrum obtained from massive open string modes in a holographic dual of QCD constructed on the basis of a D4/D8-brane configuration in type IIA string theory. The spectrum includes mesons with spin higher than one. Taking into account the effect of curved background perturbatively, we obtain a mass formula for these mesons, which exhibits the linear Regge behavior at the leading order with subleading non-linear corrections. We argue that the string spectrum captures some features of the observed meson spectrum. For example, a_2(1320), b_1(1235), π(1300), a_0(1450), etc., are identified as the first excited massive open string states and ρ_3(1690), π_2(1670), etc., are identified as the second excited states.

Nuclear Force from String Theory

We compute nuclear force in a holographic model of QCD on the basis of a D4-D8 brane configuration in type IIA string theory. Repulsive core of nucleons is quite important in nuclear physics, but its origin has not been well-understood in strongly-coupled QCD. We find that string theory via gauge/string duality deduces this repulsive core at short distance between nucleons. Since baryons in the model are realized as solitons given by Yang-Mills instanton configuration on flavor D8-branes, ADHM construction of two instantons probes well the nucleon interaction at short scale, which provides the nuclear force quantitatively. We obtain, as well as a tensor force, a central force which is strongly repulsive as suggested in experiments and lattice results. In particular, the nucleon-nucleon potential V(r) (as a function of the distance) scales as 1/r^2, which is peculiar to the holographic model. We compare our results with one-boson exchange model using the nucleon-nucleon-meson coupling obtained in our previous paper (arXiv:0806.3122).

Holographic Baryons : Static Properties and Form Factors from Gauge/String Duality

In this paper, we study properties of baryons by using a holographic dual of QCD on the basis of the D4/D8-brane configuration, where baryons are described by a soliton. We first determine the asymptotic behavior of the soliton solution, which allows us to evaluate well-defined currents associated with the U(N_f)_L \times U(N_f)_R chiral symmetry. Using the currents, we compute static quantities of baryons such as charge radii and magnetic moments, and make a quantitative test with experiments. It is emphasized that not only the nucleon but also excited baryons, such as Δ, N(1440), N(1535) etc., can be analyzed systematically in this model. We also investigate the form factors and find that our form factors agree well with the results that are well-established empirically. With the form factors, the effective baryon-baryon-meson cubic coupling constants among their infinite towers in the model can be determined. Some physical implications following from these results are discussed.

O(N) and USp(N) QCD from String Theory

We propose a holographic dual of large N_c QCD with the gauge group O(N_c) and USp(N_c) and N_f flavors of massless quarks. This is constructed by adding O6-planes to an intersecting D4-D8 system in type IIA superstring theory. The holographic dual description is formulated in the Witten's D4-brane background with D8-branes and O6-planes embedded in it as probes. The D4-brane background gives rise to a smooth interpolation of D8-anti-D8 pairs and an O6-anti-O6 pair. We show that the resultant brane configuration explains geometrically the flavor symmetry breaking patterns in O(N_c) and USp(N_c) QCD that are caused by quark bilinear condensates. We next discuss that baryons can be realized as D4-anti-D4 pairs wrapped on S^4 that intersect with the O6-plane. By analyzing the tachyons on it, we reproduce the stability conditions of the baryons that are expected from the gauge theory viewpoint. The stable baryon configurations are classified systematically by using K-theory. We also give a similar analysis for the flux tubes and again reproduce the results that are consistent with QCD.
