On the Brauer indecomposability of Scott modules

Let $k$ be an algebraically closed field of prime characteristic $p$, and let $P$ be a $p$-subgroup of a finite group $G$. We give sufficient conditions for the $kG$-Scott module $\mathrm{Sc}(G,P)$ with vertex $P$ to remain indcomposable under the Brauer construction with respect to any subgroup of $P$. This generalizes similar results for the case where $P$ is abelian. The background motivation for this note is the fact that the Brauer indecomposability of a $p$-permutation bimodule is a key step towards showing that the module under consideration induces a stable equivalence of Morita type, which then may possibly be lifted to a derived equivalence.

Endo-trivial modules for finite groups with dihedral Sylow 2-subgroup

Let $k$ be an algebraically closed field of characteristic $p>0$ and $G$ a finite group. We provide a description of the torsion subgroup $TT(G)$ of the finitely generated abelian group $T(G)$ of endo-trivial $kG$-modules when $p=2$ and $G$ has a dihedral Sylow $2$-subgroup $P$. We prove that, in the case $|P|\geq 8$, $TT(G)\cong X(G)$ the group of one-dimensional $kG$-modules, except possibly when $G/O_{2'}(G)\cong \mathfrak{A}_6$, the alternating group of degree $6$; in which case $G$ may have $9$-dimensional simple torsion endo-trivial modules. We also prove a similar result in the case $|P|=4$, although the situation is more involved. Our results complement the tame-representation type investigation of endo-trivial modules started by Carlson-Mazza-Thévenaz in the cases of semi-dihedral and generalized quaternion Sylow 2-subgroups. Furthermore we provide a general reduction result, valid at any prime $p$, to recover the structure of $TT(G)$ from the structure of $TT(G/H)$, where $H$ is a normal $p'$-subgroup of $G$.

Endo-trivial modules for finite groups with Klein-four Sylow 2-subgroups

We study the finitely generated abelian group $T(G)$ of endo-trivial $kG$-modules where $kG$ is the group algebra of a finite group $G$ over a field of characteristic $p>0$. When the representation type of the group algebra is not wild, the group structure of $T(G)$ is known for the cases where a Sylow $p$-subgroup $P$ of $G$ is cyclic, semi-dihedral and generalized quaternion. We investigate $T(G)$, and more accurately, its torsion subgroup $TT(G)$ for the case where $P$ is a Klein-four group. More precisely, we give a necessary and sufficient condition in terms of the centralizers of involutions under which $TT(G) = f^{-1}(X(N_{G}(P)))$ holds, where $f^{-1}(X(N_{G}(P)))$ denotes the abelian group consisting of the $kG$-Green correspondents of the one-dimensional $kN_{G}(P)$-modules. We show that the lift to characteristic zero of any indecomposable module in $TT(G)$ affords an irreducible ordinary character. Furthermore, we show that the property of a module in $f^{-1}(X(N_{G}(P)))$ of being endo-trivial is not intrinsic to the module itself but is decided at the level of the block to which it belongs.

On symmetric quotients of symmetric algebras

We investigate symmetric quotient algebras of symmetric algebras, with an emphasis on finite group algebras over a complete discrete valuation ring ${\mathcal O}$. Using elementary methods, we show that if an ordinary irreducible character $χ$ of a finite group $G$ gives rise to a symmetric quotient over ${\mathcal O}$ which is not a matrix algebra, then the decomposition numbers of the row labelled by $χ$ are all divisible by the characteristic $p$ of the residue field of ${\mathcal O}$.

Clifford theory of characters in induced blocks

We present a new criterion to predict if a character of a finite group extends. Let $G$ be a finite group and $p$ a prime. For $N\lhd G$, we consider $p$-blocks $b$ and $b'$ of $N$ and ${\rm N}_N(D)$, respectively, with $(b')^N=b$, where $D$ is a defect group of $b'$. Under the assumption that $G$ coincides with a normal subgroup $G[b]$ of $G$, which was introduced by Dade early 1970's, we give a character correspondence between the sets of all irreducible constituents of $ϕ^G$ and those of $(ϕ')^{{\rm N}_G(D)}$ where $ϕ$ and $ϕ'$ are irreducible Brauer characters in $b$ and $b'$, respectively. This implies a sort of generalization of the theorem of Harris-Knörr. An important tool is the existence of certain extensions that also helps in checking the inductive Alperin-McKay and inductive Blockwise Alperin Weight conditions, due to the second author.

The inductive Alperin-McKay and blockwise Alperin weight conditions for blocks with cyclic defect groups

We verify the inductive blockwise Alperin weight (BAW) and the inductive Alperin-McKay (AM) conditions introduced by the second author for blocks of finite quasisimple groups with cyclic defect groups. Furthermore we establish a criterion that describes conditions under which the inductive AM condition for blocks with abelian defect groups implies the inductive BAW condition for those blocks.

Broué's abelian defect group conjecture and 3-decomposition numbers of the sporadic simple Conway group Co_1

In the representation theory of finite groups, Broué's abelian defect group conjecture says that for any prime p if a p-block A of a finite group G has an abelian defect group P, then A and its Brauer corresponding block B of the normaliser N_G(P) of P in G are derived equivalent. We prove that Broué's conjecture, and even Rickard's splendid equivalence conjecture, are true for the unique 3-block A of defect 2 of the sporadic simple Conway group Co_1, implying that both conjectures hold for all 3-blocks of Co_1. To do so, we determine the 3-decomposition numbers of A, and we actually show that A is Puig equivalent to the principal 3-block of the symmetric group S_6 of degree 6.

Broué's abelian defect group conjecture holds for the double cover of the Higman-Sims sporadic simple group

In the representation theory of finite groups, there is a well-known and important conjecture, due to Broué saying that for any prime p, if a p-block A of a finite group G has an abelian defect group P, then A and its Brauer corresponding block B of the normaliser N_G(P) of P in G are derived equivalent. We prove in this paper, that Broué's abelian defect group conjecture, and even Rickard's splendid equivalence conjecture are true for the faithful 3-block A with an elementary abelian defect group P of order 9 of the double cover 2.HS of the Higman-Sims sporadic simple group. It then turns out that both conjectures hold for all primes p and for all p-blocks of 2.HS.

Broué's abelian defect group conjecture holds for the sporadic simple Conway group Co_3

In the representation theory of finite groups, there is a well-known and important conjecture due to M. Broué. He conjectures that, for any prime p, if a p-block A of a finite group G has an abelian defect group P, then A and its Brauer corresponding block A_N of the normaliser N_G(P) of P in G are derived equivalent (Rickard equivalent). This conjecture is called Strong Version of Broué's Abelian Defect Group Conjecture. In this paper, we prove that the strong version of Broué's abelian defect group conjecture is true for the non-principal 2-block A with an elementary abelian defect group P of order 8 of the sporadic simple Conway group Co_3. This result completes the verification of the strong version of Broué's abelian defect group conjecture for all primes p and for all p-blocks of Co_3.

Broué's abelian defect group conjecture holds for the Harada-Norton sporadic simple group $HN$

In representation theory of finite groups, there is a well-known and important conjecture due to M. Broué. He conjectures that, for any prime $p$, if a $p$-block $A$ of a finite group $G$ has an abelian defect group $P$, then $A$ and its Brauer corresponding block $B$ of the normaliser $N_G(P)$ of $P$ in $G$ are derived equivalent (Rickard equivalent). This conjecture is called Broué's abelian defect group conjecture. We prove in this paper that Broué's abelian defect group conjecture is true for a non-principal 3-block $A$ with an elementary abelian defect group $P$ of order 9 of the Harada-Norton simple group $HN$. It then turns out that Broué's abelian defect group conjecture holds for all primes $p$ and for all $p$-blocks of the Harada-Norton simple group $HN$.
