Charged domain walls and crystallographic microstructures in hybrid improper ferroelectric Ca$_{3-x}$Sr$_x$Ti$_2$O$_7$

The charged domain walls in ferroelectric materials exhibit intriguing physical properties. We examine herein the charged-domain-wall structures in Ca$_{3-x}$Sr$_x$Ti$_2$O$_7$ using transmission electron microscopy. When viewed along the [001] axis, the wavy charged domain walls are observed over a wide range ($>$5 $μ$m). In contrast, short charged-domain-wall fragments (from 10 to 200 nm long) occur because they are intercepted and truncated by the conventional 180$^°$ domain walls. These results reveal the unusual charged domain structures in Ca$_{3-x}$Sr$_x$Ti$_2$O$_7$ and will be useful for understanding their formation process.

Formation process of skyrmion lattice domain boundaries: The role of grain boundaries

We report on the formation process of skyrmion lattice (SkL) domain boundaries in FeGe using Lorentz transmission electron microscopy and small-angle electron diffraction. We observed that grain boundaries and edges play an important role in the formation of SkL domain boundaries; The SkL domain boundary is stabilized at the intersection of two grains. A micromagnetic simulation using the Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equation revealed that the SkL domains separated by a boundary represent the lowest energy configuration. Conversely, in a wide area, SkL domain boundaries were not formed and SkL domains with different orientations rotated to form a single SkL domain.

Microscopic magnetization distribution of Bloch lines in a uniaxial magnet

Bloch lines are formed to reduce the magnetostatic energy generated by the Bloch walls in uniaxial magnets. Recently, it is reported that Bloch lines play important roles in the emergence and helicity reversal of magnetic bubbles in Sc-substitute M-type hexaferrites (BaFe$_{12-x-0.05}$Sc$_{x}$Mg$_{0.05}$O$_{19}$). Although Bloch lines have been discussed on the basis of micromagnetic simulations, the detailed structure was not observed directly. In this study, we investigated the microscopic structures of Bloch lines in BaFe$_{10.35}$Sc$_{1.6}$Mg$_{0.05}$O$_{19}$ uniaxial magnets. Differential-phase contrast scanning transmission microscopy (DPC-STEM) directly revealed that the edges of the Bloch walls were misaligned in the Bloch lines of BaFe$_{10.35}$Sc$_{1.6}$Mg$_{0.05}$O$_{19}$. From the micromagnetic simulations based on the Monte-Carlo technique, we showed that the misaligned Bloch walls were caused by the dipole-dipole interactions in the hexaferrite. Our results will help to understand the microstructures of Bloch lines at nanometer scale.

Ferromagnetic Cluster Glass Phase Embedded in a Paramagnetic and Metallic Host in Non-uniform Magnetic System CaRu_{1-x}Sc_{x}O_{3}

We have investigated both static and dynamic magnetic properties of polycrystalline CaRu$_{1-x}$Sc$_{x}$O$_{3}$ system in order to clarify the role of Sc ions as a disorder for magnetic ordering. We have observed typical features of a ferromagnetic cluster glass state below around 40 K: (i) a broad, frequency-dependent peak in the ac magnetic susceptibility, (ii) a slow relaxation of the magnetization, and (iii) a continuous increase in the dc magnetic susceptibility in field cooling process. The composition dependence of characteristic parameters for the cluster glass state suggests that chemical segregation can hardly explain the clustering mechanism. We propose a possible picture that the ferromagnetic clusters are distributed uniformly and form the glassy state embedded in the paramagnetic and metallic host of CaRuO$_{3}$.

Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O3 (PMN) Relaxor: Dipole Glass or Nano-Domain Ferroelectric ?

Combining our comprehensive investigations of polarization evolution, soft-mode by Raman scattering and microstructure by TEM, and the results reported in the literatures, we show that prototypical relaxor Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O3 (PMN) is essentially ferroelectric for T<Tc~225 K. Its anomalous dielectric behavior over a broad temperature range results from the reorientation of domains in the crystal. A physic picture of the structure evolution in relaxor is also revealed. It is found that nanometric ferroelectric domains (gennerally called as polar nano-region (PNR)) interact cooperatively to form micrometric domain. Such multiscale inhomogeneities of domain structure in addition to the well-known inhomogeneities of chemical composition and local symmetry are considered to play a crucial role in producing the enigmatic phenomena in relaxor system.

Ferroelectricity Driven by Twisting of Silicate Tetrahedral Chains

Conventional perovskite-type ferroelectrics are based on octahedral units of oxygen, and often comprise toxic Pb to achieve robust ferroelectricity. Here, we report the ferroelectricity in a silicate-based compound, Bi2SiO5 (BSO), induced by a structural instability of the corresponding silicate tetrahedral chains. A low-energy phonon mode condenses at ~ 673 K to induce the proper ferroelectric phase transition. Polarization switching was observed in a BSO single crystal with a coercive field of 30 kV/cm and a spontaneous polarization of 0.3 microC/cm2 along a direction normal to the cleavage plane. The in-plane polarization was estimated by first principles calculations to be 23 microC/cm2. The present findings provide a new guideline for designing ferroelectric materials based on SiO4 tetrahedral units, which is ubiquitously found in natural minerals.
