The Segre cubic and Borcherds products

We shall construct a 5-dimensional linear system of holomorphic automorphic forms on a 3-dimensional complex ball by applying Borcherds theory of automorphic forms. We shall show that this linear system gives the dual map from the Segre cubic 3-fold to the Igusa quartic 3-fold.

Rational curves on the supersingular K3 surface with Artin invariant 1 in characteristic 3

We show the existence of 112 non-singular rational curves on the supersingular K3 surface with Artin invariant 1 in characteristic 3 by several ways. Using these rational curves, we have a $(16)_{10}$-configuration and a $(280_{4}, 112_{10})$-configuration on the K3 surface. Moreover we study the Picard lattice by using the theory of the Leech lattice. The 112 non-singular rational curves correspond to 112 Leech roots.

A note on a supersingular K3 surface in characteristic 2

We construct, on a supersingular K3 surface with Artin invariant 1 in characteristic 2, a set of 21 disjoint smooth rational curves and another set of 21 disjoint smooth rational curves such that each curve in one set intersects exactly 5 curves from the other set with multiplicity 1 by using the structure of a generalized Kummer surface.

Moduli of plane quartics, Gopel invariants and Borcherds products

It is known that the moduli space of plane quartic curves is birational to an arithmetic quotient of a 6-dimensional complex ball. In this paper, we shall show that there exists a 15-dimensional space of meromorphic automorphic forms on the complex ball which gives a birational embedding of the moduli space of plane quartics with level 2 structure into 14-dimensional projective space. This map coincides with the one given by Coble by using Gopel invariants.

The moduli of curves of genus 6 and K3 surfaces

We prove that the coarse moduli space of curves of genus 6 is birational to an arithmetic quotient of a bounded symmetric domain of type IV by giving a period map to the moduli space of some lattice-polarized K3 surfaces.

Moduli spaces of K3 surfaces and complex ball quotients

These are lecture notes based on a series of talks given by the authors at the CIMPA Summer School on Algebraic Geometry and Hypergeometric Functions held in Istanbul in Summer of 2005. They provide an introduction to a recent work on the complex ball uniformization of the moduli spaces of Del Pezzo surfaces, K3 surfaces and algebraic curves of lower genus. We discuss the relationship of these constructions with the Deligne-Mostow theory of periods of hypergeometric differentianl forms. For convenience to a non-expert reader we include an introduction to the theory of periods of integrals on algebraic varieties with emphasis on abelian varieties and K3 surfaces.

The moduli space of 5 points on P^1 and K3 surfaces

We show that the moduli space of ordered 5 points on the projective line is isomorphic to an arithmetic quotient of a complex ball by using the theory of periods of K3 surfaces. We also discuss a relation between our uniformization and the one given by Shimura, Terada and Deligne-Mostow.

The moduli space of 8 points on ${\bf P}^1$ and automorphic forms

First we give a complex ball uniformization of the moduli space of 8 ordered points on the projective line by using the theory of periods of K3 surfaces. Next we give a projective model of this moduli space by using automorphic forms on a bounded symmetric domain of type IV which coincides with the one given by cross ratios of 8 ordered points of the projective line.
