Enhanced Charge Transport in A-site Ordered Perovskite Derivatives A2A'Bi2I9 (A = Cs; A'= Ag, Cu): A First-Principles Study

Recent experiments have synthesized Cs2AgBi2I9 by partially substituting Cs+ with Ag+ at the A-site of Cs3Bi2I9, resulting in enhanced charge transport properties compared to Cs3Bi2I9. However, the atomic-scale mechanisms behind this enhancement remain unclear. In this work, we investigate the carrier transport mechanisms in Cs2A'Bi2I9 (A' = Ag, Cu) using first-principles calculations and Boltzmann transport calculations. Our results reveal that A-site ordered Cs2A'Bi2I9 exhibits carrier mobilities that are 3-4 times higher than those of Cs3Bi2I9 within the 100-500 K temperature range. We identify polar phonon scattering as the dominant mechanism limiting mobility. Furthermore, the enhanced out-of-plane carrier mobility in Cs2A'Bi2I9, particularly between 100 and 200K, leads to reduced mobility anisotropy. These improvements are mainly due to the shorter A'-I bond lengths and increased Ag+/Cu+ s-I p orbital coupling. Notably, substitution with Cu+ results in a further reduction in the band gap and enhanced hole mobility compared to Ag+ substitution in Cs3Bi2I9. Further analysis reveals that the significant increase in carrier mobility in Cs2A'Bi2I9 can be largely explained by the smaller carrier effective masses (m*) and weaker Fröhlich coupling strengths (α), resulting in a lower polar mass α(m*/me), compared to Cs3Bi2I9. Our study provides valuable insights into the transport properties of Bi-based perovskite derivatives, paving the way for their future applications in optoelectronic devices.

Eagle: Exploring The Design Space for Multimodal LLMs with Mixture of Encoders

The ability to accurately interpret complex visual information is a crucial topic of multimodal large language models (MLLMs). Recent work indicates that enhanced visual perception significantly reduces hallucinations and improves performance on resolution-sensitive tasks, such as optical character recognition and document analysis. A number of recent MLLMs achieve this goal using a mixture of vision encoders. Despite their success, there is a lack of systematic comparisons and detailed ablation studies addressing critical aspects, such as expert selection and the integration of multiple vision experts. This study provides an extensive exploration of the design space for MLLMs using a mixture of vision encoders and resolutions. Our findings reveal several underlying principles common to various existing strategies, leading to a streamlined yet effective design approach. We discover that simply concatenating visual tokens from a set of complementary vision encoders is as effective as more complex mixing architectures or strategies. We additionally introduce Pre-Alignment to bridge the gap between vision-focused encoders and language tokens, enhancing model coherence. The resulting family of MLLMs, Eagle, surpasses other leading open-source models on major MLLM benchmarks.

A fluorescent-protein spin qubit

Optically-addressable spin qubits form the foundation of a new generation of emerging nanoscale sensors. The engineering of these sensors has mainly focused on solid-state systems such as the nitrogen-vacancy (NV) center in diamond. However, NVs are restricted in their ability to interface with biomolecules due to their bulky diamond host. Meanwhile, fluorescent proteins have become the gold standard in bioimaging, as they are genetically encodable and easily integrated with biomolecules. While fluorescent proteins have been suggested to possess a metastable triplet state, they have not been investigated as qubit sensors. Here, we realize an optically-addressable spin qubit in the Enhanced Yellow Fluorescent Protein (EYFP) enabled by a novel spin-readout technique. A near-infrared laser pulse allows for triggered readout of the triplet state with up to 44% spin contrast. Using coherent microwave control of the EYFP spin at liquid-nitrogen temperatures, we measure a spin-lattice relaxation time of $(141 \pm 5)\, \mathrm{μs}$, a $(16 \pm 2)\, \mathrm{μs}$ coherence time under Carr-Purcell-Meiboom-Gill (CPMG) decoupling, and a predicted oscillating (AC) magnetic field sensitivity with an upper bound of $183 \, \mathrm{fT}\, \mathrm{mol}^{1/2}\, \mathrm{Hz}^{-1/2}$. We express the qubit in mammalian cells, maintaining contrast and coherent control despite the complex intracellular environment. Finally, we demonstrate optically-detected magnetic resonance at room temperature in aqueous solution with contrast up to 3%, and measure a static (DC) field sensitivity with an upper bound of $93 \, \mathrm{pT}\, \mathrm{mol}^{1/2}\, \mathrm{Hz}^{-1/2}$. Our results establish fluorescent proteins as a powerful new qubit sensor platform and pave the way for applications in the life sciences that are out of reach for solid-state technologies.

Eagle 2: Building Post-Training Data Strategies from Scratch for Frontier Vision-Language Models

Recently, promising progress has been made by open-source vision-language models (VLMs) in bringing their capabilities closer to those of proprietary frontier models. However, most open-source models only publish their final model weights, leaving the critical details of data strategies and implementation largely opaque. In this work, we address VLM post-training from a data-centric perspective, showing the key role of data strategy in developing frontier VLMs. By studying and building our post-training data strategy from scratch, we share detailed insights into the development processes, aiming to benefit the development of competitive models for the open-source community. Our introduced data strategy, together with training recipes and model design, leads to a family of performant VLMs named Eagle2. Specifically, Eagle2-9B achieves state-of-the-art results across various multimodal benchmarks, matching certain competitive models with up to 70B parameters.

L3TC: Leveraging RWKV for Learned Lossless Low-Complexity Text Compression

Learning-based probabilistic models can be combined with an entropy coder for data compression. However, due to the high complexity of learning-based models, their practical application as text compressors has been largely overlooked. To address this issue, our work focuses on a low-complexity design while maintaining compression performance. We introduce a novel Learned Lossless Low-complexity Text Compression method (L3TC). Specifically, we conduct extensive experiments demonstrating that RWKV models achieve the fastest decoding speed with a moderate compression ratio, making it the most suitable backbone for our method. Second, we propose an outlier-aware tokenizer that uses a limited vocabulary to cover frequent tokens while allowing outliers to bypass the prediction and encoding. Third, we propose a novel high-rank reparameterization strategy that enhances the learning capability during training without increasing complexity during inference. Experimental results validate that our method achieves 48% bit saving compared to gzip compressor. Besides, L3TC offers compression performance comparable to other learned compressors, with a 50x reduction in model parameters. More importantly, L3TC is the fastest among all learned compressors, providing real-time decoding speeds up to megabytes per second. Our code is available at https://github.com/alipay/L3TC-leveraging-rwkv-for-learned-lossless-low-complexity-text-compression.git.

Transformer-based toxin-protein interaction analysis prioritizes airborne particulate matter components with potential adverse health effects

Air pollution, particularly airborne particulate matter (PM), poses a significant threat to public health globally. It is crucial to comprehend the association between PM-associated toxic components and their cellular targets in humans to understand the mechanisms by which air pollution impacts health and to establish causal relationships between air pollution and public health consequences. Although many studies have explored the impact of PM on human health, the understanding of the association between toxins and the associated targets remain limited. Leveraging cutting-edge deep learning technologies, we developed tipFormer (toxin-protein interaction prediction based on transformer), a novel deep-learning tool for identifying toxic components capable of penetrating human cells and instigating pathogenic biological activities and signaling cascades. Experimental results show that tipFormer effectively captures interactions between proteins and toxic components. It incorporates dual pre-trained language models to encode protein sequences and chemicals. It employs a convolutional encoder to assimilate the sequential attributes of proteins and chemicals. It then introduces a learning module with a cross-attention mechanism to decode and elucidate the multifaceted interactions pivotal for the hotspots binding proteins and chemicals. Experimental results show that tipFormer effectively captures interactions between proteins and toxic components. This approach offers significant value to air quality and toxicology researchers by allowing high-throughput identification and prioritization of hazards. It supports more targeted laboratory studies and field measurements, ultimately enhancing our understanding of how air pollution impacts human health.

On Bott--Samelson rings for Coxeter groups

We study the cohomology ring of the Bott--Samelson variety. We compute an explicit presentation of this ring via Soergel's result, which implies that it is a purely combinatorial invariant. We use the presentation to introduce the Bott--Samelson ring associated with a word in arbitrary Coxeter system by generators and relations. In general, it is a split quadratic complete intersection algebra with a triangular pattern of relations. By a result of Tate, it follows that it is a Koszul algebra and we provide a quadratic (reduced) Gr{ö}bner basis. Furthermore, we prove that it satisfies the whole Kähler package, including the Poincaré duality, the hard Lefschetz theorem, and the Hodge--Riemann bilinear relations.

Hydra-MDP: End-to-end Multimodal Planning with Multi-target Hydra-Distillation

We propose Hydra-MDP, a novel paradigm employing multiple teachers in a teacher-student model. This approach uses knowledge distillation from both human and rule-based teachers to train the student model, which features a multi-head decoder to learn diverse trajectory candidates tailored to various evaluation metrics. With the knowledge of rule-based teachers, Hydra-MDP learns how the environment influences the planning in an end-to-end manner instead of resorting to non-differentiable post-processing. This method achieves the $1^{st}$ place in the Navsim challenge, demonstrating significant improvements in generalization across diverse driving environments and conditions. Far3D: Expanding the Horizon for Surround-view 3D Object Detection

Recently 3D object detection from surround-view images has made notable advancements with its low deployment cost. However, most works have primarily focused on close perception range while leaving long-range detection less explored. Expanding existing methods directly to cover long distances poses challenges such as heavy computation costs and unstable convergence. To address these limitations, this paper proposes a novel sparse query-based framework, dubbed Far3D. By utilizing high-quality 2D object priors, we generate 3D adaptive queries that complement the 3D global queries. To efficiently capture discriminative features across different views and scales for long-range objects, we introduce a perspective-aware aggregation module. Additionally, we propose a range-modulated 3D denoising approach to address query error propagation and mitigate convergence issues in long-range tasks. Significantly, Far3D demonstrates SoTA performance on the challenging Argoverse 2 dataset, covering a wide range of 150 meters, surpassing several LiDAR-based approaches. Meanwhile, Far3D exhibits superior performance compared to previous methods on the nuScenes dataset. The code is available at https://github.com/megvii-research/Far3D.

Exploring Object-Centric Temporal Modeling for Efficient Multi-View 3D Object Detection

In this paper, we propose a long-sequence modeling framework, named StreamPETR, for multi-view 3D object detection. Built upon the sparse query design in the PETR series, we systematically develop an object-centric temporal mechanism. The model is performed in an online manner and the long-term historical information is propagated through object queries frame by frame. Besides, we introduce a motion-aware layer normalization to model the movement of the objects. StreamPETR achieves significant performance improvements only with negligible computation cost, compared to the single-frame baseline. On the standard nuScenes benchmark, it is the first online multi-view method that achieves comparable performance (67.6% NDS & 65.3% AMOTA) with lidar-based methods. The lightweight version realizes 45.0% mAP and 31.7 FPS, outperforming the state-of-the-art method (SOLOFusion) by 2.3% mAP and 1.8x faster FPS. Code has been available at https://github.com/exiawsh/StreamPETR.git.

Focal-PETR: Embracing Foreground for Efficient Multi-Camera 3D Object Detection

The dominant multi-camera 3D detection paradigm is based on explicit 3D feature construction, which requires complicated indexing of local image-view features via 3D-to-2D projection. Other methods implicitly introduce geometric positional encoding and perform global attention (e.g., PETR) to build the relationship between image tokens and 3D objects. The 3D-to-2D perspective inconsistency and global attention lead to a weak correlation between foreground tokens and queries, resulting in slow convergence. We propose Focal-PETR with instance-guided supervision and spatial alignment module to adaptively focus object queries on discriminative foreground regions. Focal-PETR additionally introduces a down-sampling strategy to reduce the consumption of global attention. Due to the highly parallelized implementation and down-sampling strategy, our model, without depth supervision, achieves leading performance on the large-scale nuScenes benchmark and a superior speed of 30 FPS on a single RTX3090 GPU. Extensive experiments show that our method outperforms PETR while consuming 3x fewer training hours. The code will be made publicly available.

Global Convergence and Error Estimates in Infinity-ion-mass Limits for Bipolar Euler-Poisson System

This paper is concerned with the global-in-time convergence from bipolar Euler-Poisson system (BEP) to unipolar one (UEP) through the infinity-ion-mass limit by letting the ratio of the mass of ion $m_i$ over that of electron $m_e$ goes to infinity. The global convergence of the limit is obtained for smooth solutions sufficiently close to constant equilibrium states. Furthermore, by applying the stream function method and taking advantage of the anti-symmetric structure of the error system, one obtains the corresponding global-in-time error estimates between smooth solutions of (BEP) and (UEP). It is worth mentioning that due to the strong coupling through the Poisson equation in bipolar system, stream functions for ions and electrons equations should be constructed separately based on asymptotic expansions of solutions, which is very different from the case of unipolar system.

Logic-based switching finite-time stabilization with applications in mechanical systems

This paper investigates the finite time stabilization problem for a class of nonlinear systems with unknown control directions and unstructured uncertainties. The unstructured uncertainties indicate that not only the parameters but also the structure of the system nonlinearities are uncertain. The contributions are mainly in the following two aspects: First, a new adaptive control method is proposed for the considered system. Logic-based switching rule is utilized to tune the controller parameters online to stabilize the system in finite time. Different from the existing adaptive controllers for structured/parametric uncertainties, a new switching barrier Lyapunov method and supervisory functions are introduced to overcome the obstacles caused by unstructured uncertainties and unknown control directions. Second, based on a time-varying backstepping scheme, an extension is made to the proposed method such that all the system states can be regulated to zero in prescribed finite time. Moreover, a new analysis tool is presented to show the boundedness of the control signals. Simulations are conducted to verify the effectiveness of the proposed methods.

Automated Model Design and Benchmarking of 3D Deep Learning Models for COVID-19 Detection with Chest CT Scans

The COVID-19 pandemic has spread globally for several months. Because its transmissibility and high pathogenicity seriously threaten people's lives, it is crucial to accurately and quickly detect COVID-19 infection. Many recent studies have shown that deep learning (DL) based solutions can help detect COVID-19 based on chest CT scans. However, most existing work focuses on 2D datasets, which may result in low quality models as the real CT scans are 3D images. Besides, the reported results span a broad spectrum on different datasets with a relatively unfair comparison. In this paper, we first use three state-of-the-art 3D models (ResNet3D101, DenseNet3D121, and MC3\_18) to establish the baseline performance on the three publicly available chest CT scan datasets. Then we propose a differentiable neural architecture search (DNAS) framework to automatically search for the 3D DL models for 3D chest CT scans classification with the Gumbel Softmax technique to improve the searching efficiency. We further exploit the Class Activation Mapping (CAM) technique on our models to provide the interpretability of the results. The experimental results show that our automatically searched models (CovidNet3D) outperform the baseline human-designed models on the three datasets with tens of times smaller model size and higher accuracy. Furthermore, the results also verify that CAM can be well applied in CovidNet3D for COVID-19 datasets to provide interpretability for medical diagnosis.

First, a user study is conducted to investigate and quantify the user acceptance of a mobile contact tracing system. Second, a decentralized system is proposed to enable contact tracing while protecting user privacy. Third, an intelligent behavior detection algorithm is designed to ease the use of our system. PatDNN: Achieving Real-Time DNN Execution on Mobile Devices with Pattern-based Weight Pruning

With the emergence of a spectrum of high-end mobile devices, many applications that formerly required desktop-level computation capability are being transferred to these devices. However, executing the inference of Deep Neural Networks (DNNs) is still challenging considering high computation and storage demands, specifically, if real-time performance with high accuracy is needed. Weight pruning of DNNs is proposed, but existing schemes represent two extremes in the design space: non-structured pruning is fine-grained, accurate, but not hardware friendly; structured pruning is coarse-grained, hardware-efficient, but with higher accuracy loss. In this paper, we introduce a new dimension, fine-grained pruning patterns inside the coarse-grained structures, revealing a previously unknown point in design space. With the higher accuracy enabled by fine-grained pruning patterns, the unique insight is to use the compiler to re-gain and guarantee high hardware efficiency. In other words, our method achieves the best of both worlds, and is desirable across theory/algorithm, compiler, and hardware levels. The proposed PatDNN is an end-to-end framework to efficiently execute DNN on mobile devices with the help of a novel model compression technique (pattern-based pruning based on extended ADMM solution framework) and a set of thorough architecture-aware compiler- and code generation-based optimizations (filter kernel reordering, compressed weight storage, register load redundancy elimination, and parameter auto-tuning). Evaluation results demonstrate that PatDNN outperforms three state-of-the-art end-to-end DNN frameworks, TensorFlow Lite, TVM, and Alibaba Mobile Neural Network with speedup up to 44.5x, 11.4x, and 7.1x, respectively, with no accuracy compromise. Real-time inference of representative large-scale DNNs (e.g., VGG-16, ResNet-50) can be achieved using mobile devices.
