Magnetically supramassive and hypermassive compact stars

It is known that the mass of magnetized relativistic compact star is larger than that of non-magnetized one for the same equation of state and central density, albeit the excess of mass is sizable only if the magnetic fields are strong enough B~10^17-10^18G. Using our recently developed numerical code COCAL, we systematically compute such compact star solutions in equilibrium associated with mixed poloidal and toroidal magnetic fields, and show the magnetically supramassive solutions whose masses exceed by more than 10% of the maximum mass of the static and spherically symmetric solutions. For some extremely strong magnetic field configurations, we also obtain solutions more massive than the maximum mass of the uniformly rotating solutions at the Kepler (mass-shedding) limit, namely magnetically hypermassive solutions.

How different is the magnetic field at the core-crust interface from that at the neutron star surface? -- the range allowed in magnetoelastic equilibrium

This study was focused on the investigation of a magnetic field penetrating from the core of a neutron star to its surface. The range of possible field configurations in the intermediate solid crust is less limited owing to the elastic force acting on the force balance. When the Lorentz force is excessively strong, the magnetoelastic equilibrium does not hold, and thus, the magnetic field becomes constrained. By numerically solving for the magnetoelastic equilibrium in a thin crust, the range of the magnetic field at the core-crust interface was determined, while assuming the exterior to be fixed as a dipole in vacuum. The results revealed that the toroidal component should be smaller than the poloidal component at the core-crust interface for the surface dipole, $B_{0} > 2.1 \times 10^{14}$G. Consequently, a strong toroidal field, for example, $B \sim 10^{16}$G, as suggested by free precession of magnetars should be confined to a deep interior core and should be reduced to $B \sim 10^{14}$G at the bottom of the crust. The findings of this study provide insights into the interior field structure of magnetars. Further investigations on more complicated geometries with higher multipoles and exterior magnetosphere are necessary.

Equilibriums of extremely magnetized compact stars with force-free magnetotunnels

We present numerical solutions for stationary and axisymmetric equilibriums of compact stars associated with extremely strong magnetic fields. The interior of the compact stars is assumed to satisfy ideal magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) conditions, while in the region of negligible mass density the force-free conditions or electromagnetic vacuum are assumed. Solving all components of Einstein's equations, Maxwell's equations, ideal MHD equations, and force-free conditions, equilibriums of rotating compact stars associated with mixed poloidal and toroidal magnetic fields are obtained. It is found that in the extreme cases the strong mixed magnetic fields concentrating in a toroidal region near the equatorial surface expel the matter and form a force-free toroidal magnetotunnel. We also introduce a new differential rotation law for computing solutions associated with force-free magnetosphere, and present other extreme models without the magnetotunnel.

New code for equilibriums and quasiequilibrium initial data of compact objects. IV. Rotating relativistic stars with mixed poloidal and toroidal magnetic fields

A new code for computing fully general relativistic solutions of strongly magnetized rapidly rotating compact stars is developed as a part of the COCAL (Compact Object CALculator) code. The full set of Einstein's equations, Maxwell's equations and magnetohydrodynamic equations are consistently solved assuming perfect conductivity, stationarity, and axisymmetry, and strongly magnetized solutions associated with mixed poloidal and toroidal components of magnetic fields are successfully obtained in generic (non-circular) spacetimes. We introduce the formulation of the problem and the numerical method in detail, then present examples of extremely magnetized compact star solutions and their convergence tests. It is found that, in extremely magnetized stars, the stellar matter can be expelled from the region of strongest toroidal fields. Hence we conjecture that a toroidal electro-vacuum region may appear inside of the extremely magnetized compact stars, which may seem like the neutron star becoming the strongest toroidal solenoid coil in the universe.

Stably stratified stars containing magnetic fields whose toroidal components are much larger than the poloidal ones in general relativity: A perturbation analysis

We construct the stably stratified magnetized stars within the framework of general relativity. The effects of magnetic fields on the structure of the star and spacetime are treated as perturbations of non-magnetized stars. By assuming ideal magnetohydrodynamics and employing one-parameter equations of state, we derive basic equations for describing stationary and axisymmetric stably stratified stars containing magnetic fields whose toroidal components are much larger than the poloidal ones. A number of the polytropic models are numerically calculated to investigate basic properties of the effects of magnetic fields on the stellar structure. According to the stability result obtained by Braithwaite, which remains a matter of conjecture for general magnetized stars, certain of the magnetized stars constructed in this study are possibly stable.

Tidal deformability and I-Love-Q relations for gravastars with polytropic thin shells

The moment of inertia, the spin-induced quadrupole moment, and the tidal Love number of neutron-star and quark-star models are related through some relations which depend only mildly on the stellar equation of state. These "I-Love-Q" relations have important implications for astrophysics and gravitational-wave astronomy. An interesting problem is whether similar relations hold for other compact objects and how they approach the black-hole limit. To answer these questions, here we investigate the deformation properties of a large class of thin-shell gravastars, which are exotic compact objects that do not possess an event horizon nor a spacetime singularity. Working in a small-spin and small-tidal field expansion, we calculate the moment of inertia, the quadrupole moment, and the (quadrupolar electric) tidal Love number of gravastars with a polytropic thin shell. The I-Love-Q relations of a thin-shell gravastar are drastically different from those of an ordinary neutron star. The Love number and quadrupole moment are negative for less compact models and the I-Love-Q relations continuously approach the black-hole limit. We consider a variety of polytropic equations of state for the matter shell, and find no universality in the I-Love-Q relations. However, we cannot deny the possibility that, similarly to the neutron-star case, an approximate universality might emerge for a limited class of equations of state. Finally, we discuss how a measurement of the tidal deformability from the gravitational-wave detection of a compact-binary inspiral can be used to constrain exotic compact objects like gravastars.

Non-axisymmetric magnetic modes of neutron stars with purely poloidal magnetic fields

We calculate non-axisymmetric oscillations of neutron stars magnetized by purely poloidal magnetic fields. We use polytropes of index $n=1$ and 1.5 as a background model, where we ignore the equilibrium deformation due to the magnetic field. Since separation of variables is not possible for the oscillation of magnetized stars, we employ finite series expansions for the perturbations using spherical harmonic functions. Solving the oscillation equations as the boundary and eigenvalue problem, we find two kinds of discrete magnetic modes, that is, stable (oscillatory) magnetic modes and unstable (monotonically growing) magnetic modes. For isentropic models, the frequency or the growth rate of the magnetic modes is exactly proportional to $B_{\rm S}$, the strength of the field at the surface. The oscillation frequency and the growth rate are affected by the buoyant force in the interior, and the stable stratification tends to stabilize the unstable magnetic modes.

Slowly rotating thin shell gravastars

We construct the solutions of slowly rotating gravastars with a thin shell. In the zero-rotation limit, we consider the gravastar composed of a de Sitter core, a thin shell, and Schwarzschild exterior spacetime. The rotational effects are treated as small axisymmetric and stationary perturbations. The perturbed internal and external spacetimes are matched with a uniformly rotating thin shell. We assume that the angular velocity of the thin shell, $Ω$, is much smaller than the Keplerian frequency of the nonrotating gravastar, $Ω_k$. The solutions within an accuracy up to the second order of $Ω/Ω_k$ are obtained. The thin shell matter is assumed to be described by a perfect fluid and to satisfy the dominant energy condition in the zero-rotation limit. In this study, we assume that the equation of state for perturbations is the same as that of the unperturbed solution. The spherically symmetric component of the energy density perturbations, $δσ_0$, is assumed to vanish independently of the rotation rate. Based on these assumptions, we obtain many numerical solutions and investigate properties of the rotational corrections to the structure of the thin shell gravastar.

Slowly rotating regular black holes with a charged thin shell

We obtain rotating solutions of regular black holes which are constructed of de Sitter spacetime with the axisymmetric stationary perturbation within the timelike charged thin shell and the Kerr-Newman geometry with sufficiently small rotation outside the shell. To treat the slowly rotating thin shell, we employ the method developed by de la Cruz and Israel. The thin shell is assumed to be composed of a dust in the zero-rotation limit and located inside the inner horizon of the black hole solution. We expand the perturbation in powers of the rotation parameter of the Kerr-Newman metric up to the second order. It is found that with the present treatment, the stress tensor of the thin shell in general has anisotropic pressure, i.e., the thin shell cannot be composed of a dust if the rotational effects are taken into account. However, the thin shell can be composed of a perfect fluid with isotropic pressure if the degrees of freedom appearing in the physically acceptable matching of the two distinct spacetimes are suitably used. We numerically investigate the rotational effects on the spherically symmetric charged regular black hole obtained by Uchikata, Yoshida and Futamase in detail.

Non-radial oscillations of the magnetized rotating stars with purely toroidal magnetic fields

We calculate non-axisymmetric oscillations of uniformly rotating polytropes magnetized with a purely toroidal magnetic field, taking account of the effects of the deformation due to the magnetic field. As for rotation, we consider only the effects of Coriolis force on the oscillation modes, ignoring those of the centrifugal force, that is, of the rotational deformation of the star. Since separation of variables is not possible for the oscillation of rotating magnetized stars, we employ finite series expansions for the perturbations using spherical harmonic functions. We calculate magnetically modified normal modes such as $g$-, $f$-, $p$-, $r$-, and inertial modes. In the lowest order, the frequency shifts produced by the magnetic field scale with the square of the characteristic Alfvén frequency. As a measure of the effects of the magnetic field, we calculate the proportionality constant for the frequency shifts for various oscillation modes. We find that the effects of the deformation are significant for high frequency modes such as $f$- and $p$-modes but unimportant for low frequency modes such as $g$-, $r$-, and inertial modes.

Counter effects of meridional flows and magnetic fields in stationary axisymmetric self-gravitating barotropes under the ideal MHD approximation: clear examples - toroidal configurations

We obtain the general forms for the current density and the vorticity from the integrability conditions of the basic equations which govern the stationary states of axisymmetric magnetized self-gravitating barotropic objects with meridional flows under the ideal magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) approximation. As seen from the stationary condition equations for such bodies, the presence of the meridional flows and that of the poloidal magnetic fields act oppositely on the internal structures. The different actions of these two physical quantities, the meridional flows and the poloidal magnetic fields, could be clearly seen through stationary structures of the toroidal gaseous configurations around central point masses in the framework of Newtonian gravity because the effects of the two physical quantities can be seen in an amplified way for toroidal systems compared to those for spheroidal stars. The meridional flows make the structures more compact, i.e. the widths of toroids thinner, while the poloidal magnetic fields are apt to elongate the density contours in a certain direction depending on the situation. Therefore, the simultaneous presence of the internal flows and the magnetic fields would work as if there were no such different actions within and around the stationary gaseous objects such as axisymmetric magnetized toroids with internal motions around central compact objects under the ideal MHD approximation, although these two quantities might exist in real systems.

New solutions of charged regular black holes and their stability

We construct new regular black hole solutions by matching the de Sitter solution and the Reissner-Nordstrom solution with a timelike thin shell. The thin shell is assumed to have mass but no pressure and obeys an equation of motion derived from Israel's junction conditions. By investigating the equation of motion for the shell, we obtain stationary solutions of charged regular black holes and examine stability of the solutions. Stationary solutions are found in limited ranges of 0.87L < m < 1.99L, and they are stable against small radial displacement of the shell with fixed values of m, M, and Q if M>0, where L is the de Sitter horizon radius, m the black hole mass, M the proper mass of the shell and Q the black hole charge. All the solutions obtained are highly charged in the sense of Q/m >0.866. By taking the massless limit of the shell in the present regular black hole solutions, we obtain the charged regular black hole with a massless shell obtained by Lemos and Zanchin and investigate stability of the solutions. It is found that Lemos and Zanchin's regular black hole solutions given by the massless limit of the present regular black hole solutions permit stable solutions, which are obtained by the limit of M -> 0.

Stably stratified magnetized stars in general relativity

We construct magnetized stars composed of a fluid stably stratified by entropy gradients in the framework of general relativity, assuming ideal magnetohydrodynamics and employing a barotropic equation of state. We first revisit basic equations for describing stably-stratified stationary axisymmetric stars containing both poloidal and toroidal magnetic fields. As sample models, the magnetized stars considered by Ioka and Sasaki (2004), inside which the magnetic fields are confined, are modified to the ones stably stratified. The magnetized stars newly constructed in this study are believed to be more stable than the existing relativistic models because they have both poloidal and toroidal magnetic fields with comparable strength, and magnetic buoyancy instabilities near the surface of the star, which can be stabilized by the stratification, are suppressed.

Quasinormal modes of a massless charged scalar field on a small Reissner-Nordström-anti-de Sitter black hole

We investigate quasinormal modes of a massless charged scalar field on a small Reissner-Nordström-anti-de Sitter (RN-AdS) black hole both with analytical and numerical approaches. In the analytical approach, by using the small black hole approximation (r_+ << L), we obtain the quasinormal mode frequencies in the limit of r_+/L -> 0, where r_+ and L stand for the black hole event horizon radius and the AdS scale, respectively. We then show that the small RN-AdS black hole is unstable if its quasinormal modes satisfy the superradiance condition and that the instability condition of the RN-AdS black hole in the limit of r_+/L -> 0 is given by Q>(3/eL)Q_c, where Q, Q_c, and e are the charge of the black hole, the critical (maximum) charge of the black hole, and the charge of the scalar field, respectively. In the numerical approach, we calculate the quasinormal modes for the small RN-AdS black holes with r_+ << L and confirm that the RN-AdS black hole is unstable if its quasinormal modes satisfy the superradiance condition. Our numerical results show that the RN-AdS black holes with r_+ =0.2L, 0.1L, and 0.01L become unstable against scalar perturbations with eL=4 when the charge of the black hole satisfies Q > 0.8Q_c, 0.78Q_c, and 0.76Q_c, respectively.

Non-axisymmetric instabilities of neutron star with toroidal magnetic fields

The aim of this paper is to clarify the stabilities of neutron stars with strong toroidal magnetic fields against non-axisymmetric perturbation. The motivation comes from the fact that super magnetized neutron stars of $\sim 10^{15}$G, magnetars, and magnetized proto-neutron stars born after the magnetically-driven supernovae are likely to have such strong toroidal magnetic fields. Long-term, three-dimensional general relativistic magneto-hydrodynamic simulations are performed, preparing isentropic neutron stars with toroidal magnetic fields in equilibrium as initial conditions. To explore the effects of rotations on the stability, simulations are done for both non-rotating and rigidly rotating models. We find the emergence of the Parker and/or Tayler instabilities in both the non-rotating and rotating models. For both non-rotating and rotating models, the Parker instability is the primary instability as predicted by the local linear perturbation analysis. The interchange instability also appears in the rotating models. It is found that rapid rotation is not enough to suppress the Parker instability, and this finding does not agree with the perturbation analysis. The reason for this is that rigidly and rapidly rotating stars are marginally stable, and hence, in the presence of stellar pulsations by which the rotational profile is deformed, unstable regions with negative gradient of angular momentum profile is developed. After the onset of the instabilities, a turbulence is excited. Contrary to the axisymmetric case, the magnetic fields never reach an equilibrium state after the development of the turbulence. This conclusion suggests that three-dimensional simulation is indispensable for exploring the formation of magnetars or prominence activities of magnetars such as giant flares.

Relativistic stars with purely toroidal magnetic fields with realistic equations of state

We investigate equilibrium sequences of relativistic stars containing purely toroidal magnetic fields with four kinds of realistic equations of state (EOSs) of SLy (Douchin et al.), FPS (Pandharipande et al.), Shen (Shen et al.), and LS (Lattimer & Swesty). We numerically construct thousands of equilibrium configurations. Particularly we pay attention to the equilibrium sequences of constant baryon mass and/or constant magnetic flux, which model evolutions of an isolated neutron star. Important properties obtained in this study are summarized as follows ; (1) The dependence of the mass-shedding angular velocity on the EOSs is determined from that of the non-magnetized case. The stars with Shen(FPS) EOS reach the mass-shedding limit at the smallest(largest) angular velocity, while the stars with SLy or Lattimer-Swesty EOSs take the moderate values. (2) For the supramassive sequences, the equilibrium configurations are found to be generally oblate for the realistic EOSs in sharp contrast to the polytropic stars. For FPS(LS) EOS, the parameter region which permits the prolately deformed stars is widest(narrowest). For SLy and Shen EOS, it is in medium. Furthermore, the angular velocities $Ω_{\rm up}$, above which the stars start to spin up as they lose angular momentum, are found to depend sharply on the realistic EOSs. Our analysis indicates that the hierarchy of this spin up angular velocity is $Ω_{\rm up,SLy} > Ω_{\rm up,FPS} > Ω_{\rm up,LS}>Ω_{\rm up,Shen}$ and this relation holds even if the sequences have strong magnetic fields. Our results suggest the EOSs within the relativistic stars containing purely toroidal magnetic fields can be constrained by observing the angular velocity, the gravitational wave, and the signature of the spin up.

Evolution of neutron stars with toroidal magnetic fields: Axisymmetric simulation in full general relativity

We study the stability of neutron stars with toroidal magnetic fields by magnetohydrodynamic simulation in full general relativity under assumption of axial symmetry. Nonrotating and rigidly rotating neutron stars are prepared for a variety of magnetic field configuration. For modeling the neutron stars, the polytropic equation of state with the adiabatic index $Γ=2$ is used for simplicity. It is found that nonrotating neutron stars are dynamically unstable for the case that toroidal magnetic field strength varies $\propto \varpi^{2k-1}$ with $k\geq 2$ (here $\varpi$ is the cylindrical radius), whereas for $k=1$ the neutron stars are stable. After the onset of the instability, unstable modes grow approximately in the Alfvén time scale and, as a result, a convective motion is excited to change the magnetic field profile until a new state, which is stable against axisymmetric perturbation, is reached. We also find that rotation plays a role in stabilization, although the instability still sets in in the Alfvén time scale when the ratio of magnetic energy to rotational kinetic energy is larger than a critical value $\sim 0.2$. Implication for the evolution of magnetized protoneutron stars is discussed.

Relativistic stars with purely toroidal magnetic fields

We investigate the effects of the purely toroidal magnetic field on the equilibrium structures of the relativistic stars. The master equations for obtaining equilibrium solutions of relativistic rotating stars containing purely toroidal magnetic fields are derived for the first time. To solve these master equations numerically, we extend the Cook-Shapiro-Teukolsky scheme for calculating relativistic rotating stars containing no magnetic field to incorporate the effects of the purely toroidal magnetic fields. By using the numerical scheme, we then calculate a large number of the equilibrium configurations for a particular distribution of the magnetic field in order to explore the equilibrium properties. We also construct the equilibrium sequences of the constant baryon mass and/or the constant magnetic flux, which model the evolution of an isolated neutron star as it loses angular momentum via the gravitational waves. Important properties of the equilibrium configurations of the magnetized stars obtained in this study are summarized as follows ; (1) For the non-rotating stars, the matter distribution of the stars is prolately distorted due to the toroidal magnetic fields. (2) For the rapidly rotating stars, the shape of the stellar surface becomes oblate because of the centrifugal force. But, the matter distribution deep inside the star is sufficiently prolate for the mean matter distribution of the star to be prolate. (3) The stronger toroidal magnetic fields lead to the mass-shedding of the stars at the lower angular velocity. (4) For some equilibrium sequences of the constant baryon mass and magnetic flux, the stars can spin up as they lose angular momentum.
