A tunable chiral light-matter interface with on-chip spin control

The ability to engineer chiral light-matter interactions is a valuable resource for realizing quantum networks and non-reciprocal quantum optics. Here, we demonstrate chiral coupling between light and a negatively charged exciton state, i.e., a four-level system, embedded in a standard photonic-crystal waveguide. By controlling the orientation and strength of an external magnetic field, we tune the polarization of the individual optical transition dipoles relative to the fixed elliptically polarized waveguide mode. In a two-sided waveguide, an optimized oblique magnetic field allows a selected transition to decay exclusively into a single propagation direction, enabling near-unity directional emission ($0.99^{+0.01}_{-0.02}$), despite the waveguide exhibiting imperfect polarization for chiral coupling. We further observe two tunable chiral branching ratios, the directional analogue of optical cyclicity, for two $Λ$-systems, with one reaching $134_{-77}^{+\infty}$. The magnetic-field-dependent spectroscopy also allows reconstruction of the local guided-mode polarization at the emitter via the Stokes parameters relative to the emitter's dipole moments. Finally, we demonstrate that this local chirality enables coherent control of an electron spin via an optical Raman process mediated by waveguide driving. Building on the simultaneous realization of a large branching ratio, directionality and spin control achieved at the same oblique magnetic-field angle, we propose a protocol with high tolerance to photon loss for generating high-fidelity remote spin-spin entanglement. Our magnetic control opens a reconfigurable and generic route for enhancing on-chip chiral spin-photon coupling in standard nanophotonic interfaces without the need to carefully engineer the polarization of the waveguide.

Violation of Bell inequality by photon scattering on a two-level emitter

Entanglement, the non-local correlations present in multipartite quantum systems, is a curious feature of quantum mechanics and the fuel of quantum technology. It is therefore a major priority to develop energy-conserving and simple methods for generating high-fidelity entangled states. In the case of light, entanglement can be realized by interactions with matter, although the required nonlinear interaction is typically weak, thereby limiting its applicability. Here, we show how a single two-level emitter deterministically coupled to light in a nanophotonic waveguide is used to realize genuine photonic quantum entanglement for excitation at the single photon level. By virtue of the efficient optical coupling, two-photon interactions are strongly mediated by the emitter realizing a giant nonlinearity that leads to entanglement. We experimentally generate and verify energy-time entanglement by violating a Bell inequality (Clauder-Horne-Shimony-Holt Bell parameter of $S=2.67(16)>2$) in an interferometric measurement of the two-photon scattering response. As an attractive feature of this approach, the two-level emitter acts as a passive scatterer initially prepared in the ground state, i.e., no advanced spin control is required. This experiment is a fundamental advancement that may pave a new route for ultra-low energy-consuming synthesis of photonic entangled states for quantum simulators or metrology.

Increasing two-photon entangled dimensions by shaping input beam profiles

Photon pair entangled in high dimensional orbital angular momentum (OAM) degree of freedom (DOF) has been widely regarded as a possible source in improving the capacity of quantum information processing. The need for the generation of a high dimensional maximally entangled state in the OAM DOF is therefore much desired. In this work, we demonstrate a simple method to generate a broader and flatter OAM spectrum, i.e. a larger spiral bandwidth (SB), of entangled photon pairs generated through spontaneous parametric down-conversion by modifying the pump beam profile. By investigating both experimentally and theoretically, we have found that an exponential pump profile that is roughly the inverse of the mode profiles of the single-mode fibers used for OAM detection will provide a much larger SB when compared to a Gaussian shaped pump.

A high-dimensional quantum frequency converter

In high dimensional quantum communication networks, quantum frequency convertor (QFC) is indispensable as an interface in the frequency domain. For example, many QFCs have been built to link atomic memories and fiber channels. However, almost all of QFCs work in a two-dimensional space. It is still a pivotal challenge to construct a high-quality QFC for some complex quantum states, e.g., a high dimensional single-photon state that refers to a qudit. Here, we firstly propose a high-dimensional QFC for an orbital angular momentum qudit via sum frequency conversion with a flat top beam pump. As a proof-of-principle demonstration, we realize quantum frequency conversions for a qudit from infrared to visible range. Based on the qudit quantum state tomography, the fidelities of converted state are 98.29(95.02)\%, 97.42(91.74)\%, and 86.75(67.04)\% for a qudit without (with) dark counts in 2,3, and 5 dimensions, respectively. The demonstration is very promising for constructing a high capacity quantum communication network.

Multiplexing heralded single-photon in orbital angular momentum space

Heralded single-photon source (HSPS) with competitive single photon purity and indistinguishability has become an essential resource for photonic quantum information processing. Here, for the first time, we proposed a theoretical regime to enhance heralded single-photons generation by multiplexing the degree of the freedom of orbital angular momentum (OAM) of down-converted entangled photon pairs emitted from a nonlinear crystal. Experimentally, a proof-of-principle experiment has been performed through multiplexing three OAM modes. We achieve a 47$\%$ enhancement in single photon rate. A second-order autocorrelation function $g^{(2)}(0)<0.5$ ensures our multiplexed heralded single photons with good single photon purity. We further indicate that an OAM-multiplexed HSPS with high quality can be constructed by generating higher dimensional entangled state and sorting them with high efficiency in OAM space. Our avenue may approach a good HSPS with the deterministic property.

Efficient 525nm laser generation in single or double resonant cavity

This paper reports the results of a study into highly efficient sum frequency generation from 792 and 1556 nm wavelength light to 525 nm wavelength light using either a single or double resonant ring cavity based on a periodically poled potassium titanyl phosphate crystal (PPKTP). By optimizing the cavity$'$s parameters, the maximum power achieved for the resultant 525 nm laser was 263 and 373 mW for the single and double resonant cavity, respectively. The corresponding quantum conversion efficiencies were 8 and 77\% for converting 1556 nm photons to 525 nm photons with the single and double resonant cavity, respectively. The measured intra-cavity single pass conversion efficiency for both configurations was about 5\%. The performances of the sum frequency generation in these two configurations were studied and compared in detail. This work will provide guidelines for optimizing the generation of sum frequency generated laser light for a variety of configurations. The high conversion efficiency achieved in this work will help pave the way for frequency up-conversion of non-classical quantum states, such as the squeezed vacuum and single photon states. The proposed green laser source will be used in our future experiments, which includes a plan to generate two-colour entangled photon pairs and achieve the frequency down-conversion of single photons carrying orbital angular momentum.
