Probing nucleon strangeness in phi electroproduction

We investigate $ϕ$ meson electroproduction to probe the hidden strangeness content of the nucleon. We found that even a small amount of the $s\bar{s}$ admixture in the nucleon wavefunction can lead to a significant change in several double polarization asymmetries in $ϕ$ electroproduction, which can be tested experimentally at current electron facilities.

Pseudovector versus pseudoscalar coupling in kaon photoproduction - revisited

The question of pseudovector versus pseudoscalar coupling schemes for the kaon-hyperon-nucleon interaction is re-examined for the reaction $γp\to K^+ Λ$ in several isobaric models. These models typically include Born terms, $K^*$- and $K_1$-exchange in the t-channel, and a few different combinations of spin-1/2 baryon resonances in the $s$- and $u$-channels. The coupling constants are obtained by fitting to a large data set. We find that both pseudoscalar and pseudovector couplings can allow for a satisfactory description of the present database. The resulting coupling constants, $g_{KΛN}$ and $g_{KΣN}$, in the pseudovector coupling scheme are smaller than those predicted using flavor SU(3) symmetry, but consistent with the values obtained in a QCD sum rule calculation.

Medium Effects in Coherent Pion Photo- and Electroproduction on 4He and 12C

Coherent pi0 photo- and electroproduction on 4He and 12C nuclei is investigated in the framework of a distorted wave impulse approximation in momentum space. The elementary process is described by the recently developed unitary isobar model. Medium effects are considered by introducing a phenomenological Delta self-energy. The recent experimental data for 4He and 12C can be well described over a wide range of energies and emission angles by the assumption that the Delta-nuclear interaction saturates.

Probing nucleon strangeness structure with phi electroproduction

We study the possibility to constrain the hidden strangeness content of the nucleon by means of the polarization observables in phi meson electroproduction. We consider the OZI evading direct knockout mechanism that arises from the non-vanishing s\bar{s} sea quark admixture of the nucleon as well as the background of the dominant diffractive and the one-boson-exchange processes. Large sensitivity on the nucleon strangeness are found in several beam-target and beam-recoil double polarization observables. The small \sqrt{s} and W region, which is accesible at some of the current high-energy electron facilities, is found to be the optimal energy region for extracting out the OZI evasion process.

Pion cloud and the $Q^2-$dependence of $γ^* N \leftrightarrow Δ$ transition form factors

Recent experiment indicates that the behavior exhibited by the ratios $E_{1^+}/M_{1^+}$ and $S_{1^+}/M_{1^+}$ of the $γ^* N \leftrightarrow Δ$ transition remain small and negative for $Q^2 \le 4.0 GeV^2$. It implies that the perturbative QCD is still not applicable at these momentum transfers. We show that these data can be explained in a dynamical model for electromagnetic production of pions, together with a simple scaling assumption for the bare $γ^* N Δ$ form factors. Within our model we find that the bare $Δ$ is almost spherical and the electric E2 and Coulomb C2 quardrupole excitations of the physical $Δ$ are nearly saturated by pion cloud contribution in $Q^2 \le 4.0 GeV^2$.

Photoproduction of phi mesons from the proton: Polarization observables and strangeness in the nucleon

The polarization observables in phi meson photoproduction is studied to probe the strangeness content of the nucleon. In addition to the dominant diffractive production and the one-pion-exchange process, we take into account the direct knockout mechanism that arises from the possible hidden strangeness content of the nucleon. We find that some double polarization observables are very sensitive to the strangeness content of the proton because of the different spin structures of the amplitudes associated with different mechanisms. This suggests that such measurements could be very useful in probing the strangeness content in the proton. The orbitally excited quark-cluster configurations in the proton are included in the calculation and found to have little effect.

Excluded volume hadron gas model for particle number ratios in A+A collisions

We recapitulate a thermodynamically consistent excluded volume hadron gas model and examine its differences with other ``thermal models'' used in the literature. Preliminary experimental data for particle number ratios in the collisions of Au+Au at the BNL AGS (11$A$ GeV/$c$) and Pb+Pb at the CERN SPS (160$A$ GeV/$c$) are analyzed. For equal values of the hadron hard-core parameters the excluded volume model gives essentially the ideal gas predictions for the particle number ratios, which is similar to other thermal models. We observe, however, the systematic excess of experimental pion abundances compared to the ideal gas results. This effect can be explained in our model by a smaller pion hard-core volume compared to those of other hadrons. The absolute values for particle number and energy densities at the chemical freezeout are predicted with a simultaneous fit to all these AGS and SPS particle number ratios.

Polarization Observables in Phi Meson Photoproduction and the Strangeness Content of the Proton

The contributions of direct knockout processes, in addition to the diffractive production and one-pion-exchange processes associated with the phi-rho-pi and phi-gamma-pi couplings, to the polarization observables of the phi photoproduction from proton are calculated. We make use of Pomeron-photon analogy and a relativistic harmonic oscillator quark model. We find that some of the double polarization observables are very sensitive to a possible (s s-bar) admixture in the proton. It arises from the difference in the spin structures of the three different amplitudes. This suggests that such measurements could be very useful to probe the strangeness content in the proton.

$Σ$ Like Term in Pion Electroproduction Near Threshold

Sum of the time component of $Σ$ term and the induced pseudo scalar term in axial current is shown to be the t-channel pion pole in Born terms for pion electroproduction near threshold. We also show that this $Σ$ term represents the charged pseudo scalar quark density matrix elements in nucleon and manifests itself in the $L_0^+$ amplitude on this reaction.

Electroproduction of phi meson from proton and the strangeness in the nucleon

We analyze the process $e p \to e p ϕ$ near the threshold within $uud - s\bar s$ cluster model as a probe of the strangeness content of proton. Our consideration is based on the relativistic harmonic oscillator quark model which takes into account the Lorentz-contraction effect of the hadron wavefunctions. We find that the knockout mechanisms are comparable to the diffractive production of vector-meson-dominance model when only (3-5)% strange quark admixture is assumed, which should be compared with (10-20)% of the nonrelativistic quark model prediction. The cross sections of the $uud$- and $s\bar s$-knockout processes have qualitatively different dependence on the four-momentum transfer squared to the proton and may be distinguished experimentally. We also briefly discuss a way to determine the strangeness content of proton in 5-quark cluster model.
