Localized Kaluza-Klein 6-brane

We study the membrane wrapping mode corrections to the Kaluza-Klein (KK) 6-brane in eleven dimensions. We examine the localized KK6-brane in the extended space in $E_{7(7)}$ exceptional field theory. In order to discuss the physical origin of the localization in the extended space, we consider a probe M2-brane in eleven dimensions. We show that a three-dimensional $\mathcal{N} = 4$ gauge theory is naturally interpreted as a membrane generalization of the two-dimensional $\mathcal{N} = (4,4)$ gauged linear sigma model for the fundamental string. We point out that the vector field in the $\mathcal{N}= 4$ model is identified as a dual coordinate of the KK6-brane geometry. We find that the BPS vortex in the gauge theory gives rise to the violation of the isometry along the dual direction. We then show that the vortex corrections are regarded as an instanton effect in M-theory induced by the probe M2-brane wrapping around the M-circle.

Disentangling the stellar inclination of transiting planetary systems: fully analytic approach to the Rossiter-McLaughlin effect incorporating the stellar differential rotation

The Rossiter-McLaughlin (RM) effect has been widely used to estimate the sky-projected spin-orbit angle, $λ$, of transiting planetary systems. Most of the previous analysis assume that the host stars are rigid rotators in which the amplitude of the RM velocity anomaly is proportional to $v_\star \sin i_\star$. When their latitudinal differential rotation is taken into account, one can break the degeneracy, and determine separately the equatorial rotation velocity $v_\star$ and the inclination $i_{\star}$ of the host star. We derive a fully analytic approximate formula for the RM effect adopting a parameterized model for the stellar differential rotation. For those stars that exhibit the differential rotation similar to that of the Sun, the corresponding RM velocity modulation amounts to several m/s. We conclude that the latitudinal differential rotation offers a method to estimate $i_\star$, and thus the full spin-orbit angle $ψ$, from the RM data analysis alone.

Five-brane Current Algebras in Type II String Theories

We study the current algebras of the NS5-branes, the Kaluza-Klein (KK) five-branes and the exotic $5^2_2$-branes in type IIA/IIB superstring theories. Their worldvolume theories are governed by the six-dimensional $\mathcal{N}= (2,0)$ tensor and the $\mathcal{N} = (1,1)$ vector multiplets. We show that the current algebras are determined through the S- and T-dualities. The algebras of the $\mathcal{N} = (2,0)$ theories are characterized by the Dirac bracket caused by the self-dual gauge field in the five-brane worldvolumes, while those of the $\mathcal{N} = (1,1)$ theories are given by the Poisson bracket. By the use of these algebras, we examine extended spaces in terms of tensor coordinates which are the representation of ten-dimensional supersymmetry. We also examine the transition rules of the currents in the type IIA/IIB supersymmetry algebras in ten dimensions. Based on the algebras, we write down the section conditions in the extended spaces and gauge transformations of the supergravity fields.

Non-geometric Five-branes in Heterotic Supergravity

We study T-duality chains of five-branes in heterotic supergravity where the first order $α'$-corrections are present. By performing the $α'$-corrected T-duality transformations of the heterotic NS5-brane solutions, we obtain the KK5-brane and the exotic $5^2_2$-brane solutions associated with the symmetric, the neutral and the gauge NS5-branes. We find that the Yang-Mills gauge field in these solutions satisfies the self-duality condition in the three- and two-dimensional transverse spaces to the brane world-volumes. The $O(2,2)$ monodromy structures of the $5^2_2$-brane solutions are investigated by the $α'$-corrected generalized metric. Our analysis shows that the symmetric $5^2_2$-brane solution, which satisfies the standard embedding condition, is a T-fold and it exhibits the non-geometric nature. We also find that the neutral $5^2_2$-brane solution is a T-fold at least at $\mathcal{O} (α')$. On the other hand, the gauge $5^2_2$-brane solution is not a T-fold but show unusual structures of space-time.

Global Aspects of Doubled Geometry and Pre-rackoid

The integration problem of a C-bracket and a Vaisman (metric, pre-DFT) algebroid which are geometric structures of double field theory (DFT) is analyzed. We introduce a notion of a pre-rackoid as a global group-like object for an infinitesimal algebroid structure. We propose that several realizations of pre-rackoid structures. One realization is that elements of a pre-rackoid are defined by cotangent paths along doubled foliations in a para-Hermitian manifold. Another realization is proposed as a formal exponential map of the algebroid of DFT. We show that the pre-rackoid reduces to a rackoid that is the integration of the Courant algebroid when the strong constraint of DFT is imposed. Finally, for a physical application, we exhibit an implementation of the (pre-)rackoid in a three-dimensional topological sigma model.

World-volume Effective Theories of Locally Non-geometric Branes

We study world-volume effective theories of five-branes in type II string theories. We determine the bosonic zero-modes of the NS5-brane, the Kaluza-Klein monopole, the exotic Q5-, R5-branes and a space-filling brane, by direct calculations within the formalism of double field theory (DFT). We show that these zero-modes are Nambu-Goldstone modes associated with the spontaneously broken gauge symmetries in DFT. They are organized into the bosonic part of the six-dimensional $\mathcal{N} = (1,1)$ vector and the $\mathcal{N} = (2,0)$ tensor multiplets. Among other things, we examine the locally non-geometric R5-branes and space-filling branes that are characterized by the winding space. We also study effective theories of five-branes with string worldsheet instanton corrections.

Higher Derivative Supersymmetric Nonlinear Sigma Models on Hermitian Symmetric Spaces, and BPS States Therein

We formulate four-dimensional $\mathcal{N} = 1$ supersymmetric nonlinear sigma models on Hermitian symmetric spaces with higher derivative terms, free from the auxiliary field problem and the Ostrogradski's ghosts, as gauged linear sigma models. We then study Bogomol'nyi-Prasad-Sommerfield equations preserving 1/2 or 1/4 supersymmetries. We find that there are distinct branches, that we call canonical ($F=0$) and non-canonical ($F\neq 0$) branches, associated with solutions to auxiliary fields $F$ in chiral multiplets. For the ${\mathbb C}P^N$ model, we obtain a supersymmetric ${\mathbb C}P^N$ Skyrme-Faddeev model in the canonical branch while in the non-canonical branch the Lagrangian consists of solely the ${\mathbb C}P^N$ Skyrme-Faddeev term without a canonical kinetic term. These structures can be extended to the Grassmann manifold $G_{M,N} = SU(M)/[SU(M-N)\times SU(N) \times U(1)]$. For other Hermitian symmetric spaces such as the quadric surface $Q^{N-2}=SO(N)/[SO(N-2) \times U(1)])$, we impose F-term (holomorphic) constraints for embedding them into ${\mathbb C}P^{N-1}$ or Grassmann manifold. We find that these constraints are consistent in the canonical branch but yield additional constraints on the dynamical fields thus reducing the target spaces in the non-canonical branch.

More on Doubled Aspects of Algebroids in Double Field Theory

We continue to study doubled aspects of algebroid structures equipped with the C-bracket in double field theory (DFT). We find that a family of algebroids, the Vaisman (metric or pre-DFT), the pre- and the ante-Courant algebroids are constructed by the analogue of the Drinfel'd double of Lie algebroid pairs. We examine geometric implementations of these algebroids in the para-Hermitian manifold, which is a realization of the doubled space-time in DFT. We show that the strong constraint in DFT is necessary to realize the doubled and non-trivial Poisson structures but can be relaxed for some algebroids. The doubled structures of twisted brackets and those associated with group manifolds are briefly discussed.

Shapes and alignments of dark matter haloes and their brightest cluster galaxies in 39 strong lensing clusters

We study shapes and alignments of 45 dark matter (DM) haloes and their brightest cluster galaxies (BCGs) using a sample of 39 massive clusters from Hubble Frontier Field (HFF), Cluster Lensing And Supernova survey with Hubble (CLASH), and Reionization Lensing Cluster Survey (RELICS). We measure shapes of the DM haloes by strong gravitational lensing, whereas BCG shapes are derived from their light profiles in Hubble Space Telescope images. Our measurements from a large sample of massive clusters presented here provide new constraints on dark matter and cluster astrophysics. We find that DM haloes are on average highly elongated with the mean ellipticity of $0.482\pm 0.028$, and position angles of major axes of DM haloes and their BCGs tend to be aligned well with the mean value of alignment angles of $22.2\pm 3.9$ deg. We find that DM haloes in our sample are on average more elongated than their BCGs with the mean difference of their ellipticities of $0.11\pm 0.03$. In contrast, the Horizon-AGN cosmological hydrodynamical simulation predicts on average similar ellipticities between DM haloes and their central galaxies. While such a difference between the observations and the simulation may well be explained by the difference of their halo mass scales, other possibilities include the bias inherent to strong lensing measurements, limited knowledge of baryon physics, or a limitation of cold dark matter.

Doubled Aspects of Vaisman Algebroid and Gauge Symmetry in Double Field Theory

The metric algebroid proposed by Vaisman (the Vaisman algebroid) governs the gauge symmetry algebra generated by the C-bracket in double field theory (DFT). We show that the Vaisman algebroid is obtained by an analogue of the Drinfel'd double of Lie algebroids. Based on a geometric realization of doubled space-time as a para-Hermitian manifold, we examine exterior algebras and a para-Dolbeault cohomology on DFT and discuss the structure of the Drinfel'd double behind the DFT gauge symmetry. Similar to the Courant algebroid in the generalized geometry, Lagrangian subbundles $(L,\tilde{L})$ in a para-Hermitian manifold play Dirac-like structures in the Vaisman algebroid. We find that an algebraic origin of the strong constraint in DFT is traced back to the compatibility condition needed for $(L,\tilde{L})$ be a Lie bialgebroid. The analysis provides a foundation toward the "coquecigrue problem" for the gauge symmetry in DFT.

Cosmological evolution of orientations of cluster-sized dark matter haloes and their central galaxies in the Horizon-AGN simulation

It is known observationally that the major axes of galaxy clusters and their brightest cluster galaxies are roughly aligned with each other. To understand the origin of the alignment, we identify 40 cluster-sized dark matter (DM) haloes with masses higher than $5\times10^{13}~M_{\odot}$ and their central galaxies (CGs) at $z\approx 0$ in the Horizon-AGN cosmological hydrodynamical simulation. We trace the progenitors at 50 different epochs between $0 1$. The alignment becomes tighter with cosmic time; the major axes of the CGs and their host DM haloes at present are aligned on average within $\sim 30^{\circ}$ in the three dimensional space and $\sim 20^{\circ}$ in the projected plane. The orientations of the major axes of DM haloes on average follow one of the eigen-vectors of the surrounding tidal field that corresponds to the {\it slowest collapsing} (or even stretching) mode, and the alignment with the tidal field also becomes tighter. This implies that the orientations of CGs and DM haloes at the present epoch are largely imprinted in the primordial density field of the Universe, whereas strong dynamical interactions such as mergers are important to explain their mutual alignment at each epoch.

Temporally, Spatially or Light-like Modulated Vacua in Lorentz Invariant Theories

We study the vacuum structure of a class of Lorentz invariant field theories where the vacuum expectation values are not constant but are (phase) modulated. The vacua are classified into spatial, temporal, and light-like modulation types according to the patterns of spontaneous breaking of translational symmetry. The conditions for having temporal or light-like modulated vacua imply severe constraints on the models. We utilize the notion of generalized Nambu-Goldstone modes which appear in the modulated vacua. Finally, we examine fluctuation modes around these vacua and discuss their dynamics and the absence of ghosts.

Supersymmetry breaking and ghost Goldstino in modulated vacua

We discuss spontaneous supersymmetry (SUSY) breaking mechanisms by means of modulated vacua in four-dimensional ${\cal N} =1$ supersymmetric field theories. The SUSY breaking due to spatially modulated vacua is extended to the cases of temporally and lightlike modulated vacua, using a higher-derivative model with a chiral superfield, free from the Ostrogradsky instability and the auxiliary field problem. For all the kinds of modulated vacua, SUSY is spontaneously broken and the fermion in the chiral superfield becomes a Goldstino. We further investigate the stability of the modulated vacua. The vacua are (meta)stable if the vacuum energy density is non-negative. However, the vacua become unstable due to the presence of the ghost Goldstino if the vacuum energy density is negative. Finally, we derive the relation between the presence of the ghost Goldstino and the negative vacuum energy density in the modulated vacua using the SUSY algebra.

Semi-doubled Gauged Linear Sigma Model for Five-branes of Codimension Two

We establish a double dualization in two-dimensional supersymmetric gauge theory. We construct a gauged linear sigma model (GLSM) which contains a complex twisted linear superfield coupled to two sets of Abelian vector superfields. In the IR regime, the GLSM provides a string sigma model whose target spaces are a defect NS5-brane, a Kaluza-Klein vortex and an exotic $5^2_2$-brane. All of them are five-branes of codimension two and are related by T-duality. This model is a natural extension of the GLSM proposed by Tong which gives a sigma model for an H-monopole, i.e., a smeared NS5-brane of codimension three. This is also regarded as an alternative system of the GLSM for exotic five-branes proposed by the present authors. In this analysis, we confirm that the T-duality transformation procedure in terms of the complex twisted linear superfield is applicable to dualize both the real and imaginary parts of the twisted chiral superfield even at the UV level, beyond the IR limit. This indicates that the T-duality transformations at finite gauge couplings can be performed in terms of reducible superfields in the same way as irreducible (twisted) chiral superfields. Furthermore, we study quantum vortex corrections to the GLSM at the UV level. In the IR limit, these corrections are mapped to string worldsheet instanton corrections to the five-branes of codimension two. The result completely agrees with those in double field theory analysis.

High entropy and evidence for a merger in the low surface brightness cluster Abell 2399

We present results of the X-ray analyses of the nearby cluster of galaxies Abell 2399 ($z=0.058$) using the XMM-Newton and Suzaku satellites. This cluster is classified as a low surface brightness (LSB) cluster. It has a bimodal structure in X-rays, and the X-ray-emission peaks are significantly offset from the peaks in gas temperature. By de-projecting the annular spectra, the temperature and electron density in the central $r<0.1r_{200}$ region are measured to be 3.6~keV and $1.4\times10^{-3}~{\rm cm^{-3}}$, respectively. This yields a very high gas entropy, $\sim 300~{\rm keV\,cm^{2}}$, in the central region, comparable to the values observed in other LSB clusters. The scaled entropy of Abell 2399 is the highest among the REXCESS cluster sample. The spatial distribution of the member galaxies exhibits multiple substructures, the locations of which are significantly different from those in the X-ray image. We discovered a clear discontinuity in the X-ray brightness and temperature distributions in the western gas clump, which provides evidence of the presence of a cold front. Therefore, our results strongly suggest that A2399 has experienced a merger and that the high central entropy originates from the merger activity.

Spatially Modulated Vacua in a Lorentz-invariant Scalar Field Theory

Spatial modulation has been studied for a long time in condensed matter, nuclear matter and quark matter, so far in non-relativistic field theories. In this paper, spatially modulated vacua at zero temperature and zero density are studied in relativistic field theories. We first propose an adaptation of the Nambu-Goldstone theorem to higher derivative theories under the assumption of the absence of ghosts: when a global symmetry is spontaneously broken due to vacuum expectation values of space-time derivatives of fields, a Nambu-Goldstone (NG) boson appears without a canonical kinetic (quadratic derivative) term with a quartic derivative term in the modulated direction while a Higgs boson appears with a canonical kinetic term. We demonstrate this in a simple model allowing (meta)stable modulated vacuum of a phase modulation (Fulde-Ferrell state), where an NG mode associated with spontaneously broken translational and $U(1)$ symmetries appears.

Projected alignment of non-sphericities of stellar, gas, and dark matter distributions in galaxy clusters: analysis of the Horizon-AGN simulation

While various observations measured ellipticities of galaxy clusters and alignments between orientations of the brightest cluster galaxies and their host clusters, there are only a handful of numerical simulations that implement realistic baryon physics to allow direct comparisons with those observations. Here we investigate ellipticities of galaxy clusters and alignments between various components of them and the central galaxies in the state-of-the-art cosmological hydrodynamical simulation Horizon-AGN, which contains dark matter, stellar, and gas components in a large simulation box of $(100 h^{-1}$ Mpc$)^3$ with high spatial resolution ($\sim1$ kpc). We estimate ellipticities of total matter, dark matter, stellar, gas surface mass density distributions, X-ray surface brightness, and the Compton $y$-parameter of the Sunyaev-Zel'dovich effect, as well as alignments between these components and the central galaxies for 120 projected images of galaxy clusters with masses $M_{200}>5\times10^{13}M_{\odot}$. Our results indicate that the distributions of these components are well aligned with the major-axes of the central galaxies, with the root mean square value of differences of their position angles of $\sim 20^\circ$, which vary little from inner to the outer regions. We also estimate alignments of these various components with total matter distributions, and find tighter alignments than those for central galaxies with the root mean square value of $\sim 15^\circ$. We compare our results with previous observations of ellipticities and position angle alignments and find reasonable agreements. The comprehensive analysis presented in this paper provides useful prior information for analyzing stacked lensing signals as well as designing future observations to study ellipticities and alignments of galaxy clusters.

Suzaku Observations of Low Surface Brightness Cluster Abell 1631

We present analysis results for a nearby galaxy cluster Abell 1631 at $z~=~0.046$ using the X-ray observatory Suzaku. This cluster is categorized as a low X-ray surface brightness cluster. To study the dynamical state of the cluster, we conduct four-pointed Suzaku observations and investigate physical properties of the Mpc-scale hot gas associated with the A1631 cluster for the first time. Unlike relaxed clusters, the X-ray image shows no strong peak at the center and an irregular morphology. We perform spectral analysis and investigate the radial profiles of the gas temperature, density, and entropy out to approximately 1.5~Mpc in the east, north, west, and south directions by combining with the XMM-Newton data archive. The measured gas density in the central region is relatively low (${\rm a~few} \times~10^{-4}~{\rm cm^{-3}}$) at the given temperature ($\sim2.9~{\rm keV}$) compared with X-ray-selected clusters. The entropy profile and value within the central region ($r<0.1~r_{200}$) are found to be flatter and higher ($\gtrsim400~ {\rm keV~cm}^2$). The observed bolometric luminosity is approximately three times lower than that expected from the luminosity-temperature relation in previous studies for relaxed clusters. These features are also observed in another low surface brightness cluster, Abell 76. The spatial distributions of galaxies and the hot gas appear to be different. The X-ray luminosity is relatively lower than that expected from the velocity dispersion. A post-merger scenario may explain the observed results.
