U(1) Invariant F(R) Horava-Lifshitz Gravity

This paper is devoted to the study of various aspects of projectable F(R) Horava-Lifshitz (HL) gravity. We show that some versions of F(R) HL gravity may have stable de Sitter solution and instable flat space solution. In this case, the problem of scalar graviton does not appear because flat space is not vacuum state. Generalizing the U(1) HL theory proposed in arXiv:1007.2410, we formulate U(1) extension of scalar theory and of F(R) Horava-Lifshitz gravity. The Hamiltonian approach for such the theory is developed in full detail. It is demonstrated that its Hamiltonian structure is the same as for the non-relativistic covariant HL gravity. The spectrum analysis performed around flat background indicates towards the consistency of the theory because it contains graviton with only transverse polarization. Finally, we analyze the spatially-flat FRW equations for U(1) invariant F(R) Horava-Lifshitz gravity.

Screening of cosmological constant in non-local gravity

We discuss a possible mechanism to screen a cosmological constant in non-local gravity. We find that in a simple model of of non-local gravity with the Lagrangian of the form, $R+f(\Box^{-1}R)-2Λ$ where $f(X)$ is a quadratic function of $X$, there is a flat spacetime solution despite the presence of the cosmological constant $Λ$. Unfortunately, however, we also find that this solution contains a ghost in general. Then we discuss the condition to avoid a ghost and find that one can avoid it only for a finite range of `time'. Nevertheless our result suggests the possibility of solving the cosmological constant problem in the context of non-local gravity.

Non-singular modified gravity unifying inflation with late-time acceleration and universality of viscous ratio bound in F(R) theory

The review of basic cosmological properties of four-dimensional F(R)-gravity, including FRW equations of motion and its accelerating solutions, generalized fluid and scalar-tensor representation of the theory is done. Cosmological reconstruction equation is written and conditions for stability of cosmological solution are discussed. The overview of realistic F(R)-models unifying inflation with dark energy epoch is made. The avoidance of finite-time future singularities in such theories via the introduction of R^2-term is studied. New realistic non-singular F(R)-gravity unifying early-time inflation with late-time acceleration is presented. The exit from inflationary era in such model may be caused by the gravitational scenario. It is demonstrated that five-dimensional F(R)-gravity considered as non-perturbative stringy effective action leads to universal relation for viscous bound ratio.

Cardy-Verlinde formula in FRW Universe with inhomogeneous generalized fluid and dynamical entropy bounds near the future singularity

We derive a Cardy-Verlinde-like formula which relates the entropy of the closed FRW universe to its energy, and Casimir energy, for a multicomponent coupled fluid. The generalized fluid obeys an inhomogeneous equation of state. A viscous dark fluid is included, and we include also modified gravity using its fluid representation. It is demonstrated how such an expression reduces to the standard Cardy-Verlinde formula corresponding to the 2d CFT entropy only in some special cases. The dynamical entropy bound for a closed FRW universe with dark components is obtained. The universality of the dynamical entropy bound near a future singularity (of all four types), as well as near the Big Bang singularity, is investigated. It is demonstrated that except from some special cases of Type II and Type IV singularities the dynamical entropy bound is violated near the singularity even if quantum effects are taken into account. The dynamical entropy bound seems to be universal for the case of a regular universe, including the asymptotic de Sitter one.

Dark energy from modified gravity with Lagrange multipliers

We study scalar-tensor theory, k-essence and modified gravity with Lagrange multiplier constraint which role is to reduce the number of degrees of freedom. Dark Energy cosmology of different types ($Λ$CDM, unified inflation with DE, smooth non-phantom/phantom transition epoch) is reconstructed in such models. It is shown that mathematical equivalence between scalar theory and $F(R)$ gravity is broken due to presence of constraint. The cosmological dynamics of $F(R)$ gravity is modified by the second $F_2(R)$ function dictated by the constraint. Dark Energy cosmology is defined by this function while standard $F_1(R)$ function is relevant for local tests (modification of newton regime). A general discussion on the role of Lagrange multipliers to make higher-derivative gravity canonical is developed.

Covariant power-counting renormalizable gravity: Lorentz symmetry breaking and accelerating early-time FRW universe

We continue the study of covariant power-counting renormalizable gravity constrained by scalar Lagrange multiplier. Lorentz symmetry breaking is investigated in such a theory in comparison with the one in ghost condensation model. Covariant power-counting renormalizable vector gravity which is invariant under $U(1)$ gauge symmetry is proposed. Several forms of vector Lagrange multiplier in this theory are discussed. It is shown that covariant scalar/vector gravity under consideration may have power-law or de Sitter accelerating cosmological solution corresponding to inflationary era. Simplest black hole solution is obtained and dispersion relations for graviton are presented.

A proposal for covariant renormalizable field theory of gravity

The class of covariant gravity theories which have nice ultraviolet behavior and seem to be (super)-renormalizable is proposed. The apparent breaking of Lorentz invariance occurs due to the coupling with the effective fluid which is induced by Lagrange multiplier constrained scalar field. Spatially-flat FRW cosmology for such covariant field gravity may have accelerating solutions. Renormalizable versions of more complicated modified gravity which depends on Riemann and Ricci tensor squared may be constructed in the same way.

Reconstruction and deceleration-acceleration transitions in modified gravity

We discuss the cosmological reconstruction in modified Gauss-Bonnet and F(R) gravities. Two alternative representations of the action (with and without auxiliary scalar) are considered. The approximate description of deceleration-acceleration transition cosmologies is reconstructed. It is shown that cosmological solution containing Big Bang and Big Rip singularities may be reconstructed only using the representation with the auxiliary field. The analytical description of the deceleration-acceleration transition cosmology in modified Gauss-Bonnet gravity is demonstrated to be impossible at sufficiently general conditions.

Crossing of Phantom Divide in $F(R)$ Gravity

An explicit model of $F(R)$ gravity with realizing a crossing of the phantom divide is reconstructed. In particular, it is shown that the Big Rip singularity may appear in the reconstructed model of $F(R)$ gravity. Such a Big Rip singularity could be avoided by adding $R^2$ term or non-singular viable $F(R)$ theory to the model because phantom behavior becomes transient.

Covariant renormalizable gravity and its FRW cosmology

We consider the diffeomorphism invariant gravity coupled with the ideal fluid in the non-standard way. The Lorentz-invariance of the graviton propagator in such a theory considered as perturbation over flat background turns out to be broken due to non-standard coupling with the ideal fluid. As a result the behavior of the propagator in the ultraviolet/infrared region indicates that some versions of such theory are (super-)renormalizable ones (with appearance of only physical transverse modes). The FRW cosmology in same cases may be different from the one in General Relativity with the possible quintessence/phantom-like inflationary stage.

Inverse problem - reconstruction of dark energy models

We review how we can construct the gravity models which reproduces the arbitrary development of the universe. We consider the reconstruction in the Einstein gravity coupled with generalized perfect fluid, scalar-Einstein gravity, scalar-Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity, Einstein-$F(G)$-gravity, and $F(R)$-gravity. Very explicit formulas are given to reconstruct the models, which could be used when we find the detailed data of the development of the universe by future observations. Especially we find the formulas using e-foldings, which has a direct relation with observed redshift. As long as we observe the time development of the Hubble rate $H$, there exists a variety of models describing the arbitrary development of universe.

Reconstruction of k-essence model

We explicitly construct the k-essence models which reproduce the arbitrary FRW cosmology, that is, the arbitrary time-development of the scale factor or the Hubble rate. The k-essence model includes scalar quintessence model, tachyon dark energy model, ghost condensation model as special cases. Explicit formulas of the reconstruction are given. First we consider the case that the action only contains the kinetic term. In this case, we find that the model reproducing the development of the universe in the exact $Λ$CDM model cannot be constructed although there is a model which reproduces the development infinitely closing to $Λ$CDM model. We find, however, the solution is not stable. Another is more general case including potential etc., where we find that there appear infinite number of arbitrary functions of the scalar fields, which are redundant to the time development of the scale factor. By adjusting one of the redundant functions, however, we can obtain the model where any solution we need could be stable.

Equivalence of modified gravity equation to the Clausius relation

We explicitly show that the equations of motion for modified gravity theories of $F(R)$-gravity, the scalar-Gauss-Bonnet gravity, $F(\mathcal{G})$-gravity and the non-local gravity are equivalent to the Clausius relation in thermodynamics. In addition, we discuss the relation between the expression of the entropy and the contribution from the modified gravity as well as the matter to the definition of the energy flux (heat).

Is the future universe singular: Dark Matter versus modified gravity?

The fundamental problem of the occurrence/removal of finite-time future singularity in the universe evolution for coupled dark energy (DE) is addressed. It is demonstrated the existence of the (instable or local minimum) de Sitter space solution which may cure the Type II or Type IV future singularity for DE coupled with DM as the result of tuning the initial conditions. In case of phantom DE, the corresponding coupling may help to resolve the coincidence problem but not the Big Rip (Type I) singularity issue. We show that modified gravity of special form or inhomogeneous DE fluid may offer the universal scenario to cure the Type I,II,III or IV future singularity of coupled (fluid or scalar) DE evolution.

PPN limit and cosmological gravitational waves as tools to constrain f(R)-gravity

We discuss the PPN Solar-System constraints and the GW stochastic background considering some recently proposed $f(R)$ gravity models which satisfy both cosmological and stability conditions. Using the definition of PPN-parameters $γ$ and $β$ in terms of $f(R)$-models and the definition of scalar GWs, we compare and discuss if it is possible to search for parameter ranges of $f(R)$-models working at Solar System and GW stochastic background scale.

Non-singular modified gravity: the unification of the inflation, dark energy and dark mater

Using the fluid representation, we formulate the conditions for the appearance of all four types finite-time future singularity in modified gravity in accelerating FRW universe. It stressed that number of standard quintessence/phantom DE theories (including scalar, fluid, DBI ones, etc) brings the accelerating cosmology to future singularity precisely in the same way as singular modified gravity DE. The viable non-singular modified gravity unifying the early-time inflation with late-time acceleration is considered. It is shown that adding such non-singular theory to another realistic singular modified gravity which has the accelerating solution with future singularity may cure the singularity of resulting combined model. This universal scenario may be naturally applied to standard singular DE models as well as to inflationary theories with initial singularity. This suggests the additional fundamental reasoning for modification of General Relativity.

One-loop effective action for non-local modified Gauss-Bonnet gravity in de Sitter space

We discuss the classical and quantum properties of non-local modified Gauss-Bonnet gravity in de Sitter space, using its equivalent representation via string-inspired local scalar-Gauss-Bonnet gravity with a scalar potential. A classical, multiply de Sitter universe solution is found where one of the de Sitter phases corresponds to the primordial inflationary epoch, while the other de Sitter space solution--the one with the smallest Hubble rate--describes the late-time acceleration of our universe. A Chameleon scenario for the theory under investigation is developed, and it is successfully used to show that the theory complies with gravitational tests. An explicit expression for the one-loop effective action for this non-local modified Gauss-Bonnet gravity in the de Sitter space is obtained. It is argued that this effective action might be an important step towards the solution of the cosmological constant problem.
