Viable Inflationary Models in a Ghost-free Gauss-Bonnet Theory of Gravity

In this work we investigate the inflationary phenomenological implications of a recently developed ghost-free Gauss-Bonnet theory of gravity. The resulting theory can be viewed as a scalar Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet theory of gravity, so by employing the formalism for cosmological perturbations for the latter theory, we calculate the slow-roll indices and the observational indices, and we compare these with the latest observational data. Due to the presence of a freely chosen function in the model, in principle any cosmological evolution can be realized, so we specify the Hubble rate and the freely chosen function and we examine the phenomenology of the model. Specifically we focus on de Sitter, quasi-de Sitter and a cosmological evolution in which the Hubble rate evolves exponentially, with the last two being more realistic choices for describing inflation. As we demonstrate, the ghost-free model can produce inflationary phenomenology compatible with the observational data. We also briefly address the stability of first order scalar and tensor cosmological perturbations, for the exponential Hubble rate, and as we demonstrate, stability is achieved for the same range of values of the free parameters that guarantee the phenomenological viability of the models.

Modified cosmology from extended entropy with varying exponent

We present a modified cosmological scenario that arises from the application of non-extensive thermodynamics with varying exponent. We extract the modified Friedmann equations, which contain new terms quantified by the non-extensive exponent, possessing standard $Λ$CDM cosmology as a subcase. Concerning the universe evolution at late times we obtain an effective dark energy sector, and we show that we can acquire the usual thermal history, with the successive sequence of matter and dark-energy epochs, with the effective dark-energy equation-of-state parameter being in the quintessence or in the phantom regime. The interesting feature of the scenario is that the above behaviors can be obtained even if the explicit cosmological constant is set to zero, namely they arise purely from the extra terms. Additionally, we confront the model with Supernovae type Ia and Hubble parameter observational data, and we show that the agreement is very good. Concerning the early-time universe we obtain inflationary de Sitter solutions, which are driven by an effective cosmological constant that includes the new terms of non-extensive thermodynamics. This effective screening can provide a description of both inflation and late-time acceleration with the same parameter choices, which is a significant advantage.

Screened and Unscreened Solutions for Relativistic Star in de Rham-Gabadadze-Tolley (dRGT) Massive Gravity

We study the static and spherical symmetric (SSS) configurations in the non-minimal model of the de Rham-Gabadadze-Tolley (dRGT) massive gravity with a flat reference metric. Considering the modified Tolman-Oppenheimer-Volkoff (TOV) equation, the Bianchi identity, and energy-momentum conservation, we find a new algebraic equation for the radial coordinate of the reference metric. We demonstrate that this equation suggests an absence of the Vainshtein mechanism in the minimal model of the dRGT massive gravity, while it has two branches of solutions where one connects with the Schwarzschild space-time and another implies the significant deviation from the asymptotically flat space-time in the non-minimal model. We also briefly discuss the boundary conditions for the relativistic stars in the dRGT massive gravity and a potential relation with the mass-radius relation of the stars.

Cosmological singularities in interacting dark energy models with an $ω(q)$ parametrization

Future singularities arising in a family of models for the expanding Universe, characterized by sharing a convenient parametrization of the energy budget in terms of the deceleration parameter, are classified. Finite-time future singularities are known to appear in many cosmological scenarios, in particular, in the presence of viscosity or non-gravitational interactions, the last being known to be able to suppress or just change in some cases the type of the cosmological singularity. Here, a family of models with a parametrization of the energy budget in terms of the deceleration parameter are studied in the light of Gaussian processes using reconstructed data from $40$-value $H(z)$ datasets. Eventually, the form of the possible non-gravitational interaction between dark energy and dark matter is constructed from these smoothed $H(z)$ data. Using phase space analysis, it is shown that a non-interacting model with dark energy $ω_\mathrm{de} = ω_{0} + ω_{1}q$ ($q$ being the deceleration parameter) may evolve, after starting from a matter dominated unstable state, into a de Sitter Universe (the solution being in fact a stable node). Moreover, for a model with interaction term $Q = 3 H b ρ_\mathrm{dm}$ ($b$ is a parameter and $H$ the Hubble constant) three stable critical points are obtained, what may have important astrophysical implications. In addition, part of the paper is devoted to a general discussion of the finite-time future singularities obtained from direct numerical integration of the field equations, since they appear in many cosmological scenarios and could be useful for future extended studies of the models here introduced. Numerical solutions for the new models, produce finite-time future singularities of Type I or Type III, or an $ω$-singularity, provided general relativity describes the background dynamics.

On the propagation of gravitational waves in strong magnetic fields

The propagation of gravitational waves is explored in the cosmological context. It is explicitly demonstrated that the propagation of gravitational waves could be influenced by the medium. It is shown that in the thermal radiation, the propagation of gravitational waves in general relativity is different from that in the scalar-tensor theory. The propagation of gravitational waves is investigated in the uniform magnetic field. As a result, it is found that cosmic magnetic fields could influence on the propagation of gravitational waves to non-negligible extent. The corresponding estimation for the spiral galaxy NGC 6946 effect is made.

Effects of modified gravity on the turnaround radius in cosmology

We revisit the concept of turnaround radius in cosmology, in the context of modified gravity. While preliminary analyses were limited to scalar-tensor/$F(R)$ gravity, we extend the definition and the study of this quantity to a much broader class of theories including also quantum $R^2$ gravity. The turnaround radius is computed in terms of the parameters of the theory and it is shown that a deviation not larger than 10\% of this quantity from its value in Einstein's theory could constrain the model parameters and even rule out some current theories.

The role of energy conditions in $f(R)$ cosmology

Energy conditions can play an important role in defining the cosmological evolution. Specifically acceleration/deceleration of cosmic fluid, as well as the emergence of Big Rip singularities, can be related to the constraints imposed by the energy conditions. Here we discuss this issue for $f(R)$ gravity considering also conformal transformations. Cosmological solutions and equations of state can be classified according to energy conditions. The qualitative change of some energy conditions for transformations from the Jordan frame to the Einstein frame is also observed.

Cosmological constant and renormalization of gravity

In arXiv:1601.02203 and arXiv:1702.07063, we have proposed a topological model with a simple Lagrangian density and have tried to solve one of the cosmological constant problems. The Lagrangian density is the BRS exact and therefore the model can be regarded as a topological theory. In this model, the divergence of the vacuum energy coming from the quantum corrections from matters can be absorbed into the redefinition of the scalar field. In this paper, we consider the extension of the model in order to apply the mechanism to other kinds of divergences coming from the quantum correction and consider the cosmology in an extended model.

Cosmological Bound from the Neutron Star Merger GW170817 in scalar-tensor and $F(R)$ gravity theories

We consider the evolution of cosmological gravitational waves in scalar-tensor theory and $F(R)$ gravity theory as typical models of the modified gravity. Although the propagation speed is not changed from the speed of light, the propagation phase changes when we compare the propagation in these modified gravity theories with the propagation in the $Λ$CDM model. The phase change might be detected in future observations.

Sequestering Mechanism in Scalar-Tensor Gravity

We make a theoretical prediction for the ratio of the dark energy to other components in the Universe based on the scenario of the sequestering mechanism which was recently proposed as one possible way to solve the cosmological constant problem. In order to evaluate the value of dark energy and the others, we assume a specific scale factor which describes the Big-Crunch scenario in the scalar-tensor theory. We specify the parameter region where the one can explain the observed dark energy-matter ratio.

Regular Multi-Horizon Black Holes in Modified Gravity with Non-Linear Electrodynamics

We investigated the regular multi-horizon black holes in the Einstein gravity, $F(R)$ gravity and the 5 dimensional Gauss-Bonnet gravity, all of them coupled with non-linear electrodynamics. We presented several explicit examples of the actions which admit the solutions describing regular black hole space-time with multi-horizons. Thermodynamics of the obtained black hole solutions is studied. The explicit expressions of the temperature, the entropy, the thermodynamical energy and the free energy are obtained. Although the temperature vanishes in the extremal limit where the radii of the two horizons coincide with each other as in the standard multi-horizon black hole like the Reissner-Nordstr\" om black hole or the Kerr black hole, the larger temperature corresponds to the larger horizon radius. This is different from the standard black holes, where the larger temperature corresponds to the smaller horizon radius. We also found that the specific heat becomes positive for the large temperature, which is also different from the standard black holes, where the specific heat is negative. It should be also noted that the thermodynamical energy is not identical with the ADM mass. Furthermore in case of the Gauss-Bonnet gravity, it is demonstrated that the entropy can become negative.

A Toy Model of Discretized Gravity in Two Dimensions and its Extentions

We propose a toy model of quantum gravity in two dimensions with Euclidean signature. The model is given by a kind of discretization which is different from the dynamical triangulation. We show that there exists a continuum limit and we can calculate some physical quantities such as the expectation value of the area, that is, the volume of the two dimensional euclidean space-time. We also consider the extensions of the model to higher dimensions.

Covariant Generalized Holographic Dark Energy and Accelerating Universe

We proposed the generalized holographic dark energy model where infrared cutoff is identified with the combination of the FRW universe parameters: the Hubble rate, particle and future horizons, cosmological constant, the universe life-time (if finite) and their derivatives. It is demonstrated that with the corresponding choice of the cutoff one can map such holographic dark energy to modified gravity or gravity with general fluid. Explicitly, F(R) gravity and general perfect fluid are worked out in detail and corresponding infrared cutoff is found. Using this correspondence, we get realistic inflation or viable dark energy or unified inflationary-dark energy universe in terms of covariant holographic dark energy.

BRS structure of Simple Model of Cosmological Constant and Cosmology

In arXiv:1601.02203, a simple model has been proposed in order to solve one of the problems related with the cosmological constant. The model is given by a topological field theory and the model has an infinite numbers of the BRS symmetries. The BRS symmetries are, however, spontaneously broken in general. In this paper, we investigate the BRS symmetry in more details and show that there is one and only one BRS symmetry which is not broken and the unitarity can be guaranteed. In the model, the quantum problem of the vacuum energy, which may be identified with the cosmological constant, reduces to the classical problem of the initial condition. In this paper, we investigate the cosmology given by the model and specify the region of the initial conditions which could be consistent with the evolution of the universe. We also show that there is a stable solution describing the de Sitter space-time, which may explain the accelerating expansion in the current universe.

Evaporation and anti-evaporation instability of a Schwarzschild-de Sitter braneworld: the case of five-dimensional F(R) gravity

We study the problem of a four-dimensional brane lying in the five-dimensional degenerate Schwarzschild-de Sitter (Nariai) black hole, in five-dimensional $F(R)$-gravity. We show that there cannot exist the brane in the Nariai bulk space except the case that the brane tension vanishes. We demonstrate that the five-dimensional Nariai bulk is unstable in a large region of the parameter space. In particular, the Nariai bulk can have classical (anti-)evaporation instabilities. The bulk instability back-reacts on the four-dimensional brane, in case that the brane tension vanishes, and the unstable modes propagate in their world-volume.

The evolution of gravitons in accelerating cosmologies: the case of extended gravity

We discuss the production and evolution of cosmological gravitons showing how the cosmological background affects their dynamics. Besides, the detection of cosmological gravitons could constitute an extremely important signature to discriminate among different cosmological models. Here we consider the cases of scalar-tensor gravity and $f(R)$ gravity where it is demonstrated the amplification of graviton amplitude changes if compared with General Relativity. Possible observational constraints are discussed.

Localization of Vector Field on Dynamical Domain Wall

In the previous works (arXiv:1202.5375 and 1402.1346), the dynamical domain wall, where the four dimensional FRW universe is embedded in the five imensional space-time, has been realized by using two scalar fields. In this paper, we consider the localization of vector field in three formulations. The first formulation was investigated in the previous paper (arXiv:1510.01099) for the $U(1)$ gauge field. In the second formulation, we investigate the Dvali-Shifman mechanism (hep-th/9612128), where the non-abelian gauge field is confined in the bulk but the gauge symmetry is spontaneously broken on the domain wall. In the third formulation, we investigate the Kaluza-Klein modes coming from the five dimensional graviton. In the Randall-Sundrum model, the graviton was localized on the brane. We show that the $(5,μ)$ components $\left(μ=0,1,2,3\right)$ of the graviton are also localized on the domain wall and can be regarded as the vector field on the domain wall. There are, however, some corrections coming from the bulk extra dimension if the domain wall universe is expanding.

Some solutions for one of the cosmological constant problems

We propose several covariant models which may solve one of the problems in the cosmological constant. One of the model can be regarded as an extension of sequestering model. Other models could be regarded as extensions of the covariant formulation of the unimodular gravity. The contributions to the vacuum energy from the quantum corrections from the matters are absorbed into a redefinition of a scalar field and the quantum corrections become irrelevant to the dynamics. In a class of the extended unimodular gravity models, we also consider models which are regarded as topological field theories. The models can be extended and not only the vacuum energy but any quantum corrections to the gravitational action could become irrelevant for the dynamics. We find, however, that the BRS symmetry in the topological field theories is broken spontaneously and therefore the models might not be consistent.
