Bounce cosmology from $F(R)$ gravity and $F(R)$ bigravity

We reconstruct $F(R)$ gravity models with exponential and power-law forms of the scale factor in which bounce cosmology can be realized. We explore the stability of the reconstructed models with analyzing the perturbations from the background solutions. Furthermore, we study an $F(R)$ gravity model with a sum of exponentials form of the scale factor, where the bounce in the early universe as well as the late-time cosmic acceleration can be realized in a unified manner. As a result, we build a second order polynomial type model in terms of $R$ and show that it could be stable. Moreover, when the scale factor is expressed by an exponential form, we derive $F(R)$ gravity models of a polynomial type in case of the non-zero spatial curvature and that of a generic type in that of the zero spatial curvature. In addition, for an exponential form of the scale factor, an $F(R)$ bigravity model realizing the bouncing behavior is reconstructed. It is found that in both the physical and reference metrics the bouncing phenomenon can occur, although in general the contraction and expansion rates are different each other.

New proposal for non-linear ghost-free massive $F(R)$ gravity: cosmic acceleration and Hamiltonian analysis

We propose new version of massive $F(R)$ gravity which is natural generalization of convenient massive ghost-free gravity. Its Hamiltonian formulation in scalar-tensor frame is developed. We show that such $F(R)$ theory is ghost-free. The cosmological evolution of such theory is investigated. Despite the strong Bianchi identity constraint the possibility of cosmic acceleration (especially, in the presence of cold dark matter) is established. Ghost-free massive $F(R,T)$ gravity is also proposed.

No further gravitational wave modes in $F(T)$ gravity

We explore the possibility of further gravitational wave modes in $F(T)$ gravity, where $T$ is the torsion scalar in teleparallelism. It is explicitly demonstrated that gravitational wave modes in $F(T)$ gravity are equivalent to those in General Relativity. This result is achieved by calculating the Minkowskian limit for a class of analytic function of $F(T)$. This consequence is also confirmed by the preservative analysis around the flat background in the weak field limit with the scalar-tensor representation of $F(T)$ gravity.

Noether current from surface term, Virasoro algebra and black hole entropy in bigravity

We consider the static, spherically symmetric black hole solutions in bigravity theory for minimal model with a condition $f_{μν} = C^{2} g_{μν}$ and evaluate the entropy for black holes. In this condition, we show that there exists the Schwarzschild solution for $C^{2} = 1$, which is unique consistent solution. We examine how the massive spin-2 field contributes and affects to the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy corresponding to Einstein gravity. In order to obtain the black hole entropy, we use a recently proposed approach which use Virasoro algebra and central charge corresponding to surface term in the gravitational action.

Phantom without ghost

The Nine-Year WMAP results combined with other cosmological data seem to indicate an enhanced favor for the phantom regime, comparing to previous analyses. This behavior, unless reversed by future observational data, suggests to consider the phantom regime more thoroughly. In this work we provide three modified gravitational scenarios in which we obtain the phantom realization without the appearance of ghosts degrees of freedom, which plague the naive approaches on the subject, namely the Brans-Dicke type gravity, the scalar-Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity, and the $F(R)$ gravity, which are moreover free of perturbative instabilities. The phantom regime seems to favor the gravitational modification instead of the universe-content alteration.

Effective $F(T)$ gravity from the higher-dimensional Kaluza-Klein and Randall-Sundrum theories

We explore the four-dimensional effective $F(T)$ gravity with $T$ the torsion scalar in teleparallelism originating from higher-dimensional space-time theories, in particular the Kaluza-Klein (KK) and Randall-Sundrum (RS) theories. First, through the KK dimensional reduction from the five-dimensional space-time, we obtain the four-dimensional effective theory of $F(T)$ gravity with its coupling to a scalar field. Second, taking the RS type-II model in which there exist the five-dimensional Anti-de Sitter (AdS) space-time with four-dimensional Friedmann-Lemaître-Robertson-Walker (FLRW) brane, we find that there will appear the contribution of $F(T)$ gravity on the four-dimensional FLRW brane. It is demonstrated that inflation and the dark energy dominated stage can be realized in the KK and RS models, respectively, due to the effect of only the torsion in teleparallelism without that of the curvature.

Variety of cosmic acceleration models from massive $F(R)$ bigravity

We study the accelerating cosmology in massive $F(R)$ bigravity via the reconstruction scheme. The consistent solution of the FRW equations is presented: it includes Big and Little Rip, quintessence, de Sitter and decelerating universes described by the physical $g$ metric while the corresponding solution of the universe described by the reference $f$ metric is also found. It is demonstrated that in general the cosmological singularities of $g$ metric are not always manifested as cosmological singularities of the reference $f$ metric. We give two consistent ways to describe the Big and Little Rip, quintessence, de Sitter and decelerating universes. In one of the consistent solutions, the two metrics $g$ and $f$ coincide with each other, which may indicate the connection with the convenient single metric background formulation. For another solution, where two metrics $g$ and $f$ do not coincide with each other, here always appears super-luminal mode.

Anti-Evaporation of Schwarzschild-de Sitter Black Holes in $F(R)$ gravity

We studied the anti-evaporation of degenerate Schwarzschild-de Sitter black hole (so-called Nariai space-time) in modified $F(R)$ gravity. The analysis of perturbations of the Nariai black hole is done with the conclusion that anti-evaporation may occur in such a theory already on classical level. For several power-law $F(R)$ gravities which may describe the inflation and/or dark energy eras we presented the theory parameters bounds for occurrence of anti-evaporation and conjectured creation of infinite number of horizons.

Scalar Domain Wall as the Universe

We develop a formulation where for an arbitrarily given warp factor, we construct a scalar field action which reproduces the warp factor as a solution of the Einstein equation and field equation corresponding to the action. This formulation could be called as the reconstruction. By using the formulation of the reconstruction, we construct models which have an exact solution describing the domain wall. The shape of the domain wall can be flat, de Sitter space-time, or anti-de Sitter space-time. In the constructed domain wall solutions, there often appears ghost with negative kinetic energy. We give, however, an example of the de Sitter domain wall solution without ghost, which could be a toy model of inflation. We also investigate the localization of gravity as in the Randall-Sundrum model. It is demonstrated that the four dimensional Newton law could be reproduced even in the de Sitter space-time domain wall solution. We show that we can construct a space-time, where the domain wall is the general Friedmann-Robertson-Walker (FRW) universe and the warp factor can be arbitrary. For such a construction, we use two scalar fields. It is also illustrated that the scalar field equations are equivalent to the Bianchi identities: $\nabla^μ(R_{μν} - \frac{1}{2}R g_{μν})=0$.

Modified gravity: walk through accelerating cosmology

We review the accelerating (mainly, dark energy) cosmologies in modified gravity. Special attention is paid to cosmologies leading to finite-time future singularities in $F(R)$, $F(G)$ and $\mathcal{F}(R,G)$ modified gravities. The removal of the finite-time future singularities via addition of $R^2$-term which simultaneously unifies the early-time inflation with late-time acceleration is also briefly mentioned. Accelerating cosmology including the scenario unifying inflation with dark energy is considered in $F(R)$ gravity with Lagrange multipliers. In addition, we examine domain wall solutions in $F(R)$ gravity. Furthermore, covariant higher derivative gravity with scalar projectors is explored.

Stability of accelerating cosmology in two scalar-tensor theory: Little Rip versus de Sitter

We develop the general reconstruction scheme in two scalar model. The quintom-like theory which may describe (different) non-singular Little Rip or de Sitter cosmology is reconstructed. (In)stability of such dark energy cosmologies as well as the flow to fixed points is studied. The stability of Little Rip universe which leads to dissolution of bound objects sometime in future indicates that no classical transition to de Sitter space occurs.

Classical Dimensional Transmutation and Renormalization in Massive lambda phi^4 Model

Recently, Dvali, Gomez, and Mukhanov have investigated a classical lambda phi^4 model with external source and without mass and they have clarified that there are underlying renormalization group structure, including the phenomenon of the dimensional transmutation, at purely classical level. Especially when the coupling lambda is negative, the classical beta function shows the property of asymptotic freedom as in QCD. In this paper, we investigate the lambda phi^4 model with mass, and clarify the role of the mass. The obtained classical beta function is identical with that of the massless lambda phi^4 model up to the corrections of the ratio of the IR cutoff to UV cutoff, and describes the renormalization flow same as the massless theory. We also found that the dynamically generated scale of massive theory is larger than that of massless theory, which could be due to the screening effect of the mass term.

Ghost-free $F(R)$ bigravity and accelerating cosmology

We propose a bigravity analogue of the $F(R)$ gravity. Our construction is based on recent ghost-free massive bigravity where additional scalar fields are added and the corresponding conformal transformation is implemented. It turns out that $F(R)$ bigravity is easier to formulate in terms of the auxiliary scalars as the explicit presentation in terms of $F(R)$ is quite cumbersome. The consistent cosmological reconstruction scheme of $F(R)$ bigravity is developed in detail, showing the possibility to realize nearly arbitrary physical universe evolution with consistent solution for second metric. The examples of accelerating universe which includes phantom, quintessence and $Λ$CDM acceleration are worked out in detail and their physical properties are briefly discussed.

Dark energy cosmology: the equivalent description via different theoretical models and cosmography tests

We review different dark energy cosmologies. In particular, we present the $Λ$CDM cosmology, Little Rip and Pseudo-Rip universes, the phantom and quintessence cosmologies with Type I, II, III and IV finite-time future singularities and non-singular dark energy universes. In the first part, we explain the $Λ$CDM model and well-established observational tests which constrain the current cosmic acceleration. After that, we investigate the dark fluid universe where a fluid has quite general equation of state (EoS) [including inhomogeneous or imperfect EoS]. All the above dark energy cosmologies for different fluids are explicitly realized, and their properties are also explored. It is shown that all the above dark energy universes may mimic the $Λ$CDM model currently, consistent with the recent observational data. Furthermore, special attention is paid to the equivalence of different dark energy models. We consider single and multiple scalar field theories, tachyon scalar theory and holographic dark energy as models for current acceleration with the features of quintessence/phantom cosmology, and demonstrate their equivalence to the corresponding fluid descriptions. In the second part, we study another equivalent class of dark energy models which includes $F(R)$ gravity as well as $F(R)$ Hořava-Lifshitz gravity and the teleparallel $f(T)$ gravity. The cosmology of such models representing the $Λ$CDM-like universe or the accelerating expansion with the quintessence/phantom nature is described. Finally, we approach the problem of testing dark energy and alternative gravity models to general relativity by cosmography. We show that degeneration among parameters can be removed by accurate data analysis of large data samples and also present the examples.

Generalized Galileon Model -- cosmological reconstruction and the Vainshtein mechanism --

Explicit formulae of the equations in the generalized Galileon models are given. We also develop the formulation of the reconstruction. By using the formulation, we can explicitly construct an action which reproduces an arbitrary development of the expansion of the universe. The conditions how the reconstructed solution becomes stable and therefore it becomes an attractor solution are also given. Working in the static and spherically symmetric space-time, we investigate how the Vainshtein mechanism works in the generalized Galileon model and the correction to the Newton law becomes small. It is also shown that any spherically symmetric and static geometry can be realized by properly choosing the form of the action, which may tell that the solution could have fourth hair corresponding to the scalar field.

Scalar dark energy models mimicking $Λ$CDM with arbitrary future evolution

Dark energy models with various scenarios of evolution are considered from the viewpoint of the formalism for the equation of state. It is shown that these models are compatible with current astronomical data. Some of the models presented here evolve arbitrarily close to $Λ$CDM up to the present, but diverge in the future into a number of different possible asymptotic states, including asymptotic de-Sitter (pseudo-rip) evolution, little rips with disintegration of bound structures, and various forms of finite-time future singularities. Therefore it is impossible from observational data to determine whether the universe will end in a future singularity or not. We demonstrate that the models under consideration are stable for a long period of time (billions of years) before entering a Little Rip/Pseudo-Rip induced dissolution of bound structures or before entering a soft finite-time future singularity. Finally, the physical consequences of Little Rip, Type II, III and Big Crush singularities are briefly compared.

Modified first-order Horava-Lifshitz gravity: Hamiltonian analysis of the general theory and accelerating FRW cosmology in power-law F(R) model

We propose the most general modified first-order Hořava-Lifshitz (HL) gravity, whose action does not contain time derivatives higher than the second order. The Hamiltonian structure of this theory is studied in all the details in the case of the spatially-flat FRW space-time, demonstrating many of the features of the general theory. It is shown that, with some plausible assumptions, including the projectability of the lapse function, this model is consistent. As a large class of such theories, the modified HL $F(R)$ gravity is introduced. The study of its ultraviolet properties shows that its $z=3$ version seems to be renormalizable in the same way as the original HL proposal. The Hamiltonian analysis of the modified HL $F(R)$ gravity shows that it is in general a consistent theory. The $F(R)$ gravity action is also studied in the fixed-gauge form, where the appearance of a scalar field is particularly illustrative. Then the spatially-flat FRW cosmology for this $F(R)$ gravity is investigated. It is shown that a special choice of parameters for this theory leads to the same equations of motion as in the case of traditional $F(R)$ gravity. Nevertheless, the cosmological structure of the modified HL $F(R)$ gravity turns out to be much richer than for its traditional counterpart. The emergence of multiple de Sitter solutions indicates to the possibility of unification of early-time inflation with late-time acceleration within the same model. Power-law $F(R)$ theories are investigated in detail. It is analytically shown that they have a quite rich cosmological structure: early/late-time cosmic acceleration of quintessence, as well as of phantom types. Also it is demonstrated that all the four known types of finite-time future singularities may occur in the power-law HL $F(R)$ gravity. Finally, a covariant proposal for (renormalizable) $F(R)$ gravity within the HL spirit is presented.

Modified F(R) Horava-Lifshitz gravity: a way to accelerating FRW cosmology

We propose a general approach for the construction of modified gravity which is invariant under foliation-preserving diffeomorphisms. Special attention is paid to the formulation of modified $F(R)$ Hořava-Lifshitz gravity (FRHL), whose Hamiltonian structure is studied. It is demonstrated that the spatially-flat FRW equations of FRHL are consistent with the constraint equations. The analysis of de Sitter solutions for several versions of FRHL indicates that the unification of the early-time inflation with the late-time acceleration is possible. It is shown that a special choice of parameters for FRHL leads to the same spatially-flat FRW equations as in the case of traditional $F(R)$-gravity. Finally, an essentially most general modified Hořava-Lifshitz gravity is proposed, motivated by its fully diffeomorphism-invariant counterpart, with the restriction that the action does not contain derivatives higher than the second order with respect to the time coordinate.
