Comparison theorems on weighted Finsler manifolds and spacetimes with $ε$-range

We establish the Bonnet-Myers theorem, Laplacian comparison theorem, and Bishop-Gromov volume comparison theorem for weighted Finsler manifolds as well as weighted Finsler spacetimes, of weighted Ricci curvature bounded below by using the weight function. These comparison theorems are formulated with $ε$-range introduced in our previous paper, that provides a natural viewpoint of interpolating weighted Ricci curvature conditions of different effective dimensions. Some of our results are new even for weighted Riemannian manifolds and generalize comparison theorems of Wylie-Yeroshkin and Kuwae-Li.

Quantitative estimates for the Bakry-Ledoux isoperimetric inequality

We establish a quantitative isoperimetric inequality for weighted Riemannian manifolds with $\mathrm{Ric}_{\infty} \ge 1$. Precisely, we give an upper bound of the volume of the symmetric difference between a Borel set and a sub-level (or super-level) set of the associated guiding function (arising from the needle decomposition), in terms of the deficit in Bakry-Ledoux's Gaussian isoperimetric inequality. This is the first quantitative isoperimetric inequality on noncompact spaces besides Euclidean and Gaussian spaces. Our argument makes use of Klartag's needle decomposition (also called localization), and is inspired by a recent work of Cavalletti, Maggi and Mondino on compact spaces. Besides the quantitative isoperimetry, a reverse Poincaré inequality for the guiding function that we have as a key step, as well as the way we use it, are of independent interest.

Geometry of weighted Lorentz-Finsler manifolds I: Singularity theorems

We develop the theory of weighted Ricci curvature in a weighted Lorentz-Finsler framework and extend the classical singularity theorems of general relativity. In order to reach this result, we generalize the Jacobi, Riccati and Raychaudhuri equations to weighted Finsler spacetimes and study their implications for the existence of conjugate points along causal geodesics. We also show a weighted Lorentz-Finsler version of the Bonnet-Myers theorem based on a generalized Bishop inequality.

A semigroup approach to Finsler geometry: Bakry-Ledoux's isoperimetric inequality

We develop the celebrated semigroup approach à la Bakry et al on Finsler manifolds, where natural Laplacian and heat semigroup are nonlinear, based on the Bochner-Weitzenböck formula established by Sturm and the author. We show the $L^1$-gradient estimate on Finsler manifolds (under some additional assumptions in the noncompact case), which is equivalent to a lower weighted Ricci curvature bound and the improved Bochner inequality. As a geometric application, we prove Bakry-Ledoux's Gaussian isoperimetric inequality, again under some additional assumptions in the noncompact case. This extends Cavalletti-Mondino's inequality on reversible Finsler manifolds to non-reversible metrics, and improves the author's previous estimate, both based on the localization (also called needle decomposition) method.

Equality in the logarithmic Sobolev inequality

We investigate the rigidity problem for the logarithmic Sobolev inequality on weighted Riemannian manifolds satisfying $\mathrm{Ric}_{\infty} \ge K>0$. Assuming equality holds, we show that the $1$-dimensional Gaussian space is necessarily split off, similarly to the rigidity results of Cheng--Zhou on the spectral gap as well as Morgan on the isoperimetric inequality. The key ingredient of the proof is the needle decomposition method introduced on Riemannian manifolds by Klartag. We also present several related open problems.

Self-contracted curves in spaces with weak lower curvature bound

We show that bounded self-contracted curves are rectifiable in metric spaces with weak lower curvature bound in a sense we introduce in this article. This class of spaces is wide and includes, for example, finite-dimensional Alexandrov spaces of curvature bounded below and Berwald spaces of nonnegative flag curvature. (To be more precise, our condition is regarded as a strengthened doubling condition and holds also for a certain class of metric spaces with upper curvature bound.) We also provide the non-embeddability of large snowflakes into (balls in) metric spaces in the same class. We follow the strategy of the last author's previous paper based on the small rough angle condition, where spaces with upper curvature bound are considered. The results in this article show that such a strategy applies to spaces with lower curvature bound as well.

Self-contracted curves in CAT(0)-spaces and their rectifiability

We investigate self-contracted curves, arising as (discrete or continuous time) gradient curves of quasi-convex functions, and their rectifiability (finiteness of the lengths) in Euclidean spaces, Hadamard manifolds and CAT(0)-spaces. In the Hadamard case, we give a quantitative refinement of the original proof of the rectifiability of bounded self-contracted curves (in general Riemannian manifolds) by Daniilidis et al. Our argument leads us to a generalization to CAT(0)-spaces satisfying several uniform estimates on their local structures. Upon these conditions, we show the rectifiability of bounded self-contracted curves in trees, books and CAT(0)-simplicial complexes.

Rigidity for the spectral gap on $RCD(K,\infty)$-spaces

We consider a rigidity problem for the spectral gap of the Laplacian on an $RCD(K,\infty)$-space (a metric measure space satisfying the Riemannian curvature-dimension condition) for positive $K$. For a weighted Riemannian manifold, Cheng--Zhou showed that the sharp spectral gap is achieved only when a $1$-dimensional Gaussian space is split off. This can be regarded as an infinite-dimensional counterpart to Obata's rigidity theorem. Generalizing to $RCD(K,\infty)$-spaces is not straightforward due to the lack of smooth structure and doubling condition. We employ the lift of an eigenfunction to the Wasserstein space and the theory of regular Lagrangian flows recently developed by Ambrosio--Trevisan to overcome this difficulty.

Needle decompositions and isoperimetric inequalities in Finsler geometry

Klartag recently gave a beautiful alternative proof of the isoperimetric inequalities of Levy-Gromov, Bakry-Ledoux, Bayle and E. Milman on weighted Riemannian manifolds. Klartag's approach is based on a generalization of the localization method (so-called needle decompositions) in convex geometry, inspired also by optimal transport theory. Cavalletti and Mondino subsequently generalized the localization method, in a different way more directly along optimal transport theory, to essentially non-branching metric measure spaces satisfying the curvature-dimension condition. This class in particular includes reversible (absolutely homogeneous) Finsler manifolds. In this paper, we construct needle decompositions of non-reversible (only positively homogeneous) Finsler manifolds, and show an isoperimetric inequality under bounded reversibility constants. A discussion on the curvature-dimension condition CD$(K,N)$ for $N = 0$ is also included, it would be of independent interest.

Gradient flows and a Trotter--Kato formula of semi-convex functions on CAT(1)-spaces

We generalize the theory of gradient flows of semi-convex functions on CAT(0)-spaces, developed by Mayer and Ambrosio--Gigli--Savaré, to CAT(1)-spaces. The key tool is the so-called "commutativity" representing a Riemannian nature of the space, and all results hold true also for metric spaces satisfying the commutativity with semi-convex squared distance functions. Our approach combining the semi-convexity of the squared distance function with a Riemannian property of the space seems to be of independent interest, and can be compared with Savaré's work on the local angle condition under lower curvature bounds. Applications include the convergence of the discrete variational scheme to a unique gradient curve, the contraction property and the evolution variational inequality of the gradient flow, and a Trotter--Kato product formula for pairs of semi-convex functions.

$(K,N)$-convexity and the curvature-dimension condition for negative $N$

We extend the range of $N$ to negative values in the $(K,N)$-convexity (in the sense of Erbar--Kuwada--Sturm), the weighted Ricci curvature $Ric_N$ and the curvature-dimension condition $CD(K,N)$. We generalize a number of results in the case of $N>0$ to this setting, including Bochner's inequality, the Brunn--Minkowski inequality and the equivalence between $Ric_N \ge K$ and $CD(K,N)$. We also show an expansion bound for gradient flows of Lipschitz $(K,N)$-convex functions.

Discrete-time gradient flows and law of large numbers in Alexandrov spaces

We develop the theory of discrete-time gradient flows for convex functions on Alexandrov spaces with arbitrary upper or lower curvature bounds. We employ different resolvent maps in the upper and lower curvature bound cases to construct such a flow, and show its convergence to a minimizer of the potential function. We also prove a stochastic version, a generalized law of large numbers for convex function valued random variables, which not only extends Sturm's law of large numbers on nonpositively curved spaces to arbitrary lower or upper curvature bounds, but this version seems new even in the Euclidean setting. These results generalize those in nonpositively curved spaces (partly for squared distance functions) due to Bačák, Jost, Sturm and others, and the lower curvature bound case seems entirely new.

On the curvature and heat flow on Hamiltonian systems

We develop the differential geometric and geometric analytic studies of Hamiltonian systems. Key ingredients are the curvature operator, the weighted Laplacian, and the associated Riccati equation. We prove the appropriate generalizations of Bochner--Weitzenböck formula and Laplacian comparison theorem, and study the heat flow.

Bochner-Weitzenböck formula and Li-Yau estimates on Finsler manifolds

We prove the Bochner-Weitzenböck formula for the (nonlinear) Laplacian on general Finsler manifolds and derive Li-Yau type gradient estimates as well as parabolic Harnack inequalities. Moreover, we deduce Bakry-Émery gradient estimates. All these estimates depend on lower bounds for the weighted flag Ricci tensor.

A Toponogov type triangle comparison theorem in Finsler geometry

The aim of this article is to establish a Toponogov type triangle comparison theorem for Finsler manifolds, in the manner of radial curvature geometry. We consider the situation that the radial flag curvature is bounded below by the radial curvature function of a non-compact surface of revolution, the edge opposite to the base point is contained in a Berwald-like region, and that the Finsler metric is convex enough in the radial directions in that region.

Topology of complete Finsler manifolds with radial flag curvature bounded below

We recently established a Toponogov type triangle comparison theorem for a certain class of Finsler manifolds whose radial flag curvatures are bounded below by that of a von Mangoldt surface of revolution (arXiv:1205.3913). In this article, as its applications, we prove the finiteness of topological type and a diffeomorphism theorem to Euclidean spaces.

Displacement convexity of generalized relative entropies.II

We introduce a class of generalized relative entropies (inspired by the Bregman divergence in information theory) on the Wasserstein space over a weighted Riemannian or Finsler manifold. We prove that the convexity of all the entropies in this class is equivalent to the combination of the nonnegative weighted Ricci curvature and the convexity of another weight function used in the definition of the generalized relative entropies. This convexity condition corresponds to Lott and Villani's version of the curvature-dimension condition. As applications, we obtain appropriate variants of the Talagrand, HWI and logarithmic Sobolev inequalities, as well as the concentration of measures. We also investigate the gradient flow of our generalized relative entropy.

Caffarelli-Kohn-Nirenberg inequality on metric measure spaces with applications

We prove that if a metric measure space satisfies the volume doubling condition and the Caffarelli-Kohn-Nirenberg inequality with the same exponent $n \ge 3$, then it has exactly the $n$-dimensional volume growth. As an application, if an $n$-dimensional Finsler manifold of non-negative $n$-Ricci curvature satisfies the Caffarelli-Kohn-Nirenberg inequality with the sharp constant, then its flag curvature is identically zero. In the particular case of Berwald spaces, such a space is necessarily isometric to a Minkowski space.
