Efficiency correction of particle-averaged quantities

We derive analytic formulas to reconstruct particle-averaged quantities from experimental results that suffer from the efficiency loss of particle measurements. These formulas are derived under the assumption that the probabilities of observing individual particles are independent. The formulas do not agree with the conventionally used intuitive formulas.

Ratio of baryon and electric-charge cumulants at second order with acceptance corrections

We evaluate the ratio of baryon and electric-charge cumulants at second order from the recent experimental results at $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200$ GeV by the STAR Collaboration. The baryon number cumulant is reconstructed from the proton number distribution, and effects of the finite acceptance on the transverse momentum are corrected assuming the independent particle emission. We show that the obtained ratio has a dependence on the rapidity window. Comparison of the result with the hadron resonance gas model and lattice QCD numerical simulations suggests that if the fluctuations are generated from a thermal medium its temperature is significantly lower than the chemical freezeout temperature.

Investigation of Experimental Observables in Search of the Chiral Magnetic Effect in Heavy-ion Collisions in the STAR experiment

The chiral magnetic effect (CME) is a novel transport phenomenon, arising from the interplay between quantum anomalies and strong magnetic fields in chiral systems. In high-energy nuclear collisions, the CME may survive the expansion of the quark-gluon plasma fireball and be detected in experiments. Over the past decade, the experimental searches for the CME have aroused extensive interest at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) and the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). The main goal of this article is to investigate three pertinent experimental approaches: the $γ$ correlator, the $R$ correlator and the signed balance functions. We will exploit both simple Monte Carlo simulations and a realistic event generator (EBE-AVFD) to verify the equivalence in the kernel-component observables among these methods and to ascertain their sensitivities to the CME signal for the isobaric collisions at RHIC.

Efficiency corrections for mutually inclusive variables and particle identification effect for mixed-cumulants in heavy-ion collisions

Mix-cumulants of conserved charge distributions are sensitive observables for probing properties of the QCD medium and phase transition in heavy-ion collisions. To perform precise measurements, efficiency correction is one of the most important step. In this study, using the binomial efficiency model, we derive efficiency correction formulas for mutually exclusive and inclusive variables. The UrQMD model is applied to verify the validity of these formulas for different types of correlations. Furthermore, we investigate the effect of the multiplicity loss and contamination emerging from the particle identifications. This study provides an important step toward future measurements of mixed-cumulants in relativistic heavy-ion collisions.

Reconstructing particle number distributions with convoluting volume fluctuations

We propose methods to reconstruct particle distributions with and without considering initial volume fluctuations. This approach enables us to correct for detector efficiencies and initial volume fluctuations simultaneously. Our study suggests such a tool could investigate the possible bimodal structure of net-proton distribution in Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}}=$7.7 GeV a signature of first-order phase transition and critical point [arXiv:1804.04463,arXiv:1811.04456].

Pileup corrections on higher-order cumulants

We propose a method to remove the contributions of pileup events from higher-order cumulants and moments of event-by-event particle distributions. Assuming that the pileup events are given by the superposition of two independent single-collision events, we show that the true moments in each multiplicity bin can be obtained recursively from lower multiplicity events. In the correction procedure the necessary information are only the probabilities of pileup events. Other terms are extracted from the experimental data. We demonstrate that the true cumulants can be reconstructed successfully by this method in simple models. Systematics on trigger inefficiencies and correction parameters are discussed.

Mapping the Phases of Quantum Chromodynamics with Beam Energy Scan

We review the present status of the search for a phase transition and critical point as well as anomalous transport phenomena in Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD), with an emphasis on the Beam Energy Scan program at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider at Brookhaven National Laboratory. We present the conceptual framework and discuss the observables deemed most sensitive to a phase transition, QCD critical point, and anomalous transport, focusing on fluctuation and correlation measurements. Selected experimental results for these observables together with those characterizing the global properties of the systems created in heavy ion collisions are presented. We then discuss what can be already learned from the currently available data about the QCD critical point and anomalous transport as well as what additional measurements and theoretical developments are needed in order to discover these phenomena.

Volume fluctuation and multiplicity correlation on higher-order cumulants

Initial volume fluctuation (VF) arising from the participant fluctuation would be the background which should be subtracted experimentally from the measured higher-order cumulants. We study the validity of the Volume Fluctuation Correction (VFC) on higher-order net-proton cumulants by using simple toy model and UrQMD model in Au+Au collisions at \sqrt s_{NN} = 200 GeV for various centrality definitions. The results are compared to the conventional data driven method called Centrality Bin Width Correction (CBWC). We find VFC works well in toy model assuming independent particle production (IPP), but does not seem to work well in UrQMD model. It is also found that cumulants are strongly affected by the multiplicity correlation effect as well as the centrality resolution effect. These results show that neither VFC nor CBWC are perfect method. Thus, both methods should be compared in the real experiment.

A general procedure for detector-response correction of higher order cumulants

We propose a general procedure for the detector-response correction (including efficiency correction) of higher order cumulants observed by the event-by-event analysis in heavy-ion collisions. This method makes use of the moments of the response matrix characterizing the property of a detector, and is applicable to a wide variety of response matrices such as those having non-binomial responses and including the effects of ghost tracks. A procedure to carry out the detector-response correction of realistic detectors is discussed. In test analyses, we show that this method can successfully re- construct the cumulants of true distribution for various response matrices including the one having multiplicity-dependent efficiency.

More efficient formulas for efficiency correction of cumulants and effect of using averaged efficiency

We derive formulas for the efficiency correction of cumulants with many efficiency bins. The derivation of the formulas is simpler than the previously suggested method, but the numerical cost is drastically reduced from the naive method. From analytical and numerical analyses in simple toy models, we show that the use of the averaged efficiency in the efficiency correction can lead to wrong corrected values, which have larger deviation for higher order cumulants. These analyses show the importance of carrying out the efficiency correction without taking the average.

Effects of Nuclear Potential on the Cumulants of Net-Proton and Net-Baryon Multiplicity Distributions in Au+Au Collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\text{NN}}} = 5\,\text{GeV}$

We analyze the rapidity and transverse momentum dependence for the cumulants of the net-proton and net-baryon distributions in Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\text{NN}}} = 5\,\text{GeV}$ with a microscopic hadronic transport (JAM) model. To study the effects of mean field potential and softening of equation of state (EoS) on the fluctuations of net-proton (baryon) in heavy-ion collisions, the calculations are performed with two different modes. The softening of EoS is realized in the model by implementing the attractive orbit in the two-body scattering to introduce a reduction pressure of the system. By comparing the results from the two modes with the results from default cascade, we find the mean field potential and softening of EoS have strong impacts on the rapidity distributions ($\text{d}N/\text{d}y$) and the shape of the net-proton (baryon) multiplicity distributions. The net-proton (baryon) cumulants and their ratios calculated from all of the three modes are with similar trends and show significant suppression with respect to unity, which can be explained by the presence of baryon number conservations. It indicates that the effects of mean field potential and softening of EoS might be not the ingredients that are responsible to the observed strong enhancement in the most central Au+Au collisions at 7.7 GeV measured by the STAR experiment at RHIC.

Importance of separated efficiencies between positively and negatively charged particles for cumulant calculations

We show the importance of separated efficiency corrections between positively and negatively charged particles for cumulant calculations by Monte Carlo toy models and analytical calculations. Our results indicate that Sσ in published net-proton results from the STAR experiment will be suppressed about 5 to 10% in central collisions, and 10 to 20% in peripheral collisions at the beam energy of \sqrt s_{NN} = 62.4 and 200 GeV if the separated efficiencies are used to efficiency correction.

Collective Flow Measurements from the PHENIX Experiment

Recent collective flow measurements including higher moment event anisotropy from the PHENIX experiment are presented, and the particle type, beam energy dependence and the relation with jet modification are discussed. The measured higher order event anisotropy with event plane defined at forward rapidities and the long range correlation with large $η$ gaps are both consistent with initial geometrical fluctuation of the participating nuclei. In 200 GeV Au+Au collisions, higher order event anisotropy, especially simultaneous description of v$_2$ and v$_3$, is found to give an additional constraining power on initial geometrical condition and viscosity in the hydrodynamic calculations. v$_2$, v$_3$ and v$_4$ are almost unchanged down to the lower colliding energy at 39 GeV in Au+Au. The measured two particle correlation with subtraction of the measured v$_n$ parameters shows a significant effect on the shape and yield in the associate particle $Δϕ$ distribution with respect to the azimuthal direction of trigger particles. However some medium responses from jet suppression or jet modification seems to be observed. Direct photon v$_2$ has been measured in 200 GeV Au+Au collisions. The measured v$_2$ is found to be small at high p$_{\rm T}$ as expected from non-suppressed direct photon R$_{\rm AA}$ $\simeq$ 1, which can be understood as being dominated by prompt photons from initial hard scattering. On the other hand, at lower p$_{\rm T}$ $<$ 4 GeV/c it is found to be significantly larger than zero, which is comparable to other hadron v$_2$, where thermal photons are observed.

Away-side asymmetry of jet correlation relative to reaction plane: a sensitive probe for jet in-medium modifications

We proposed a new observable based on two particle azimuth correlation to study the away-side medium response in mid-central Au+Au collisions. We argue that a left/right asymmetry may appear at the away-side by selecting triggers separately in the left and right side of the reaction plane. A simple model estimation suggests that the magnitude of such asymmetry could reach 30% with details depends on the medium response mechanisms. This asymmetry, if observed, can help to distinguish competing theoretical models.

Azimuthal anisotropy in high-energy heavy-ion collisions at RHIC energies

Directed and elliptic event anisotropy parameters measured in the experiments at relativistic heavy-ion collider are presented. The possible origin of the measured elliptic anisotropy parameter $v_2$ and its sensitivity to the early phase of the high-energy heavy-ion collisions are discussed.

Identified charged particle azimuthal anisotropy in PHENIX at RHIC

We present here v$_2$ of identified and inclusive charged particles measured in the PHENIX central arm detector ($|η| < 0.35$) with respect to the reaction plane defined at $|η| = 3 \sim 4$ in 200 GeV Au+Au collisions. We find that v$_2$ increases from central to mid-central collisions reaching a maximum at about 50% of the geometric cross section and then decreases again for more peripheral collisions. As a function of transverse momentum in minimum-bias collisions, the v$_2$ parameter increases linearly with p$_{\rm T}$ up to p$_{\rm T}$ $\simeq$ 2 GeV/c and then saturates for inclusive charged particles. The v$_2$ parameter of identified particles ($π^+$, $π^-$, $K^+$, $K^-$, $p$ and $\bar{p}$) follow a hydro-dynamic behavior up to 2 GeV/c in p$_{\rm T}$, where the lighter mass particles have larger v$_2$ at a given p$_{\rm T}$. However there is an indication that this trend is reversed at around p$_{\rm T}$ $\simeq$ 2 GeV/c, where $p$ and $\bar{p}$ have larger v$_2$ than $π$ and $K$.
