Homotopy theory for digraphs

We introduce a homotopy theory of digraphs (directed graphs) and prove its basic properties, including the relations to the homology theory of digraphs constructed by the authors in previous papers. In particular, we prove the homotopy invariance of homologies of digraphs and the relation between the fundamental group of the digraph and its first homology group. The category of (undirected) graphs can be identified by a natural way with a full subcategory of digraphs. Thus we obtain also consistent homology and homotopy theories for graphs. Note that the homotopy theory for graphs coincides with the one constructed in the paper of Babson et.

D-branes and Azumaya/matrix noncommutative differential geometry, I: D-branes as fundamental objects in string theory and differentiable maps from Azumaya/matrix manifolds with a fundamental module to real manifolds

We consider D-branes in string theory and address the issue of how to describe them mathematically as a fundamental object (as opposed to a solitonic object) of string theory in the realm in differential and symplectic geometry. The notion of continuous maps, $k$-times differentiable maps, and smooth maps from an Azumaya/matrix manifold with a fundamental module to a (commutative) real manifold $Y$ is developed. Such maps are meant to describe D-branes or matrix branes in string theory when these branes are light and soft with only small enough or even zero brane-tension. When $Y$ is a symplectic manifold (resp. a Calabi-Yau manifold; a $7$-manifold with $G_2$-holonomy; a manifold with an almost complex structure $J$), the corresponding notion of Lagrangian maps (resp. special Lagrangian maps; associative maps, coassociative maps; $J$-holomorphic maps) are introduced. Indicative examples linking to symplectic geometry and string theory are given. This provides us with a language and part of the foundation required to study themes, new or old, in symplectic geometry and string theory, including (1) $J$-holomorphic D-curves (with or without boundary), (2) quantization and dynamics of D-branes in string theory, (3) a definition of Fukaya category guided by Lagrangian maps from Azumaya manifolds with a fundamental module with a connection, (4) a theory of fundamental matrix strings or D-strings, and (5) the nature of Ramond-Ramond fields in a space-time. The current note D(11.1) is the symplectic/differential-geometric counterpart of the more algebraic-geometry-oriented first two notes D(1) ([L-Y1]) (arXiv:0709.1515 [math.AG]) and D(2) ([L-L-S-Y], with Si Li and Ruifang Song) (arXiv:0809.2121 [math.AG]) in this project.

Hodge Bundles on Smooth Compactifications of Siegel Varieties and Applications

We study Hodge bundles on Siegel varieties and their various extensions to smooth toroidal compactifications. Precisely, we construct a canonical Hodge bundle on an arbitrary Siegel variety so that the holomorphic tangent bundle can be embedded into the Hodge bundle, and we observe that the Bergman metric on the Siegel variety is compatible with the induced Hodge metric. Therefore we obtain the asymptotic estimate of the Bergman metric explicitly. Depending on these properties and the uniformitarian of Kähler-Einstein manifold, we study extensions of the tangent bundle over any smooth toroidal compactification. We also apply this result, together with Siegel cusp modular forms, to study general type for Siegel varieties.

The Geometry on Smooth Toroidal Compactifications of Siegel varieties

This is a part of our joint program. The purpose of this paper is to study smooth toroidal compactifications of Siegel varieties and their applications, we also try to understand the Kähler-Einstein metrics on Siegel varieties through the compactifications. Let $A_{g,Γ}:=H_g/Γ$ be a Siegel variety, where $H_g$ is the genus-$g$ Siegel space and $Γ$ is an arithmetic subgroup in $Aut(H_g)$. There are four aspects of this paper : 1.There is a correspondence between the category of degenerations of Abelian varieties and the category of limits of weight one Hodge structures. We show that any cusp of Siegel space $\frak{H}_g$ can be identified with the set of certain weight one polarized mixed Hodge structures. 2.In general, the boundary of a smooth toroidal compactification $\bar{A}_{g,Γ}$ of $A_{g,Γ}$ has self-intersections.For most geometric applications, we would like to have a nice toroidal compactification such that the added infinity boundary $D_\infty =\bar{A}_{g,Γ}-A_{g,Γ}$ is a normal crossing divisor, We actually obtain a sufficient and necessary combinatorial condition for toroidal compactifications. 3. A toroidal compactification $\bar{A}_{g,Γ}$ of is totally determined by a combinatorial condition : an admissible family of polyhedral decompositions of certain positive cones. We show that the unique Kähler-Einstein metric on $A_{g,Γ}$ endows some restraint combinatorial conditions for all toroidal smooth compactifications of $A_{g,Γ}.$ 4.We study the asymptotic behaviour of logarithmical canonical line bundles on smooth toroidal compactifications of $A_{g,Γ}$ and get an integral formula for intersection numbers.

Cohomology and Hodge Theory on Symplectic Manifolds: III

We introduce filtered cohomologies of differential forms on symplectic manifolds. They generalize and include the cohomologies discussed in Paper I and II as a subset. The filtered cohomologies are finite-dimensional and can be associated with differential elliptic complexes. Algebraically, we show that the filtered cohomologies give a two-sided resolution of Lefschetz maps, and thereby, they are directly related to the kernels and cokernels of the Lefschetz maps. We also introduce a novel, non-associative product operation on differential forms for symplectic manifolds. This product generates an A-infinity algebra structure on forms that underlies the filtered cohomologies and gives them a ring structure. As an application, we demonstrate how the ring structure of the filtered cohomologies can distinguish different symplectic four-manifolds in the context of a circle times a fibered three-manifold.

Accelerating black holes, spin-3/2 fields and C-metric

We consider spin-3/2 particles on the background of general accelerating black holes and C-metric. The Rarita-Schwinger equations of spin-3/2 particles are analyzed on these backgrounds. The emission and absorption probabilities of the spin-3/2 particles on these spacetimes are calculated. These backgrounds which we analyze contain both black hole horizon and acceleration horizon, and have general electric and magnetic charges, rotation, and acceleration parameter. The properties of the spin-3/2 field near the acceleration horizon are also computed.

Simplicial Ricci Flow: An Example of a Neck Pinch Singularity in 3D

We examine a Type-1 neck pinch singularity in simplicial Ricci flow (SRF) for an axisymmetric piecewise flat 3-dimensional geometry with 3-sphere topology. SRF was recently introduced as an unstructured mesh formulation of Hamilton's Ricci flow (RF). It describes the RF of a piecewise-flat simplicial geometry. In this paper, we apply the SRF equations to a representative double-lobed axisymmetric piecewise flat geometry with mirror symmetry at the neck similar to the geometry studied by Angenent and Knopf (A-K). We choose a specific radial profile and compare the SRF equations with the corresponding finite-difference solution of the continuum A-K RF equations. The piecewise-flat 3-geometries considered here are built of isosceles-triangle-based frustum blocks. The axial symmetry of this model allows us to use frustum blocks instead of tetrahedra. The 2-sphere cross-sectional geometries in our model are regular icosahedra. We demonstrate that, under a suitably-pinched initial geometry, the SRF equations for this relatively low-resolution discrete geometry yield the canonical Type-1 neck pinch singularity found in the corresponding continuum solution. We adaptively remesh during the evolution to keep the circumcentric dual lattice well-centered. Without such remeshing, we cannot evolve the discrete geometry to neck pinch. We conclude with a discussion of future generalizations and tests of this SRF model.

Simplicial Ricci Flow

We construct a discrete form of Hamilton's Ricci flow (RF) equations for a d-dimensional piecewise flat simplicial geometry, S. These new algebraic equations are derived using the discrete formulation of Einstein's theory of general relativity known as Regge calculus. A Regge-Ricci flow (RRF) equation is naturally associated to each edge, L, of a simplicial lattice. In defining this equation, we find it convenient to utilize both the simplicial lattice, S, and its circumcentric dual lattice, S*. In particular, the RRF equation associated to L is naturally defined on a d-dimensional hybrid block connecting $\ell$ with its (d-1)-dimensional circumcentric dual cell, L*. We show that this equation is expressed as the proportionality between (1) the simplicial Ricci tensor, Rc_L, associated with the edge L in S, and (2) a certain volume weighted average of the fractional rate of change of the edges, lambda in L*, of the circumcentric dual lattice, S*, that are in the dual of L. The inherent orthogonality between elements of S and their duals in S* provide a simple geometric representation of Hamilton's RF equations. In this paper we utilize the well established theories of Regge calculus, or equivalently discrete exterior calculus, to construct these equations. We solve these equations for a few illustrative examples.

Extremal Bundles on Calabi-Yau Threefolds

We study constructions of stable holomorphic vector bundles on Calabi-Yau threefolds, especially those with exact anomaly cancellation which we call extremal. By going through the known databases we find that such examples are rare in general and can be ruled out for the spectral cover construction for all elliptic threefolds. We then introduce a generalized version of Hartshorne-Serre construction and use it to yield extremal bundles of general ranks and study their geometry. In light of this probing the geometry of the space of stable vector bundles, we revisit the DRY conjecture on stable reflexive sheaves while focusing on the distribution of Chern numbers to use both theoretical and statistical ideas to provide evidence for DRY.

Poisson metrics on flat vector bundles over non-compact curves

Let (E,D,P) be a flat vector bundle with a parabolic structure over a punctured Riemann surface, (M,g). We consider a deformation of the harmonic metric equation which we call the Poisson metric equation. This equation arises naturally as the dimension reduction of the Hermitian-Yang-Mills equation for holomorphic vector bundles on K3 surfaces in the large complex structure limit. We define a notion of slope stability, and show that if the flat connection D has regular singularities, and the Riemannian metric g has finite volume then E admits a Poisson metric with asymptotics determined by the parabolic structure if and only if (E,D,P) is slope polystable.

The Unified Surface Ricci Flow

Ricci flow deforms the Riemannian metric proportionally to the curvature, such that the curvature evolves according to a heat diffusion process and eventually becomes constant everywhere. Ricci flow has demonstrated its great potential by solving various problems in many fields, which can be hardly handled by alternative methods so far. This work introduces the unified theoretic framework for discrete Surface Ricci Flow, including all common schemes: Thurston's Circle Packing, Tangential Circle Packing, Inversive Distance Circle Packing and Discrete Yamabe. Furthermore, this work also introduces a novel scheme, virtual radius circle packing, under the unified framework. This work gives explicit geometric interpretation to the discrete Ricci energy for all the schemes, and Hessian of the discrete Ricci energy for schemes with Euclidean back ground geometry. The unified frame work deepen our understanding to the the discrete surface Ricci flow theory, and inspired us to discover the new schemes, improved the flexibility and robustness of the algorithms, greatly simplified the implementation and improved the debugging efficiency. Experimental results shows the unified surface Ricci flow algorithms can handle general surfaces with different topologies, and is robust to meshes with different qualities, and effective for solving real problems.

Quasilocal angular momentum and center of mass in general relativity

For a spacelike 2-surface in spacetime, we propose a new definition of quasi-local angular momentum and quasi-local center of mass, as an element in the dual space of the Lie algebra of the Lorentz group. Together with previous defined quasi-local energy-momentum, this completes the definition of conserved quantities in general relativity at the quasi-local level. We justify this definition by showing the consistency with the theory of special relativity and expectations on an axially symmetric spacetime. The limits at spatial infinity provide new definitions for total conserved quantities of an isolated system, which do not depend on any asymptotically flat coordinate system or asymptotic Killing field. The new proposal is free of ambiguities found in existing definitions and presents the first definition that precisely describes the dynamics of the Einstein equation.

Conserved quantities in general relativity: from the quasi-local level to spatial infinity

We define quasi-local conserved quantities in general relativity by using the optimal isometric embedding in [26] to transplant Killing fields in the Minkowski spacetime back to the 2-surface of interest in a physical spacetime. To each optimal isometric embedding, a dual element of the Lie algebra of the Lorentz group is assigned. Quasi-local angular momentum and quasi-local center of mass correspond to pairing this element with rotation Killing fields and boost Killing fields, respectively. They obey classical transformation laws under the action of the Poincaré group. We further justify these definitions by considering their limits as the total angular momentum and the total center of mass of an isolated system. These expressions were derived from the Hamilton-Jacobi analysis of gravitation action and thus satisfy conservation laws. As a result, we obtained an invariant total angular momentum theorem in the Kerr spacetime. For a vacuum asymptotically flat initial data set of order $1$, it is shown that the limits are always finite without any extra assumptions. We also study these total conserved quantities on a family of asymptotically flat initial data sets evolving by the vacuum Einstein evolution equation. It is shown that the total angular momentum is conserved under the evolution. For the total center of mass, the classical dynamical formula relating the center of mass, energy, and linear momentum is recovered, in the nonlinear context of initial data sets evolving by the vacuum Einstein evolution equation. The definition of quasi-local angular momentum provides an answer to the second problem in classical general relativity on Penrose's list [18].

An explicit formula of hitting times for random walks on graphs

We prove an explicit formula of hitting times in terms of enumerations of spanning trees for random walks on general connected graphs. We apply the formula to improve Lawler's bound of hitting times for general graphs, prove a sharp bound of hitting times for adjacent vertices and derive closed formulas of hitting times for some special graphs.

Building Blocks for Generalized Heterotic/F-theory Duality

In this note we propose a generalization of heterotic/F-theory duality. We introduce a set of non-compact building blocks which we glue together to reach compact examples of generalized duality pairs. The F-theory building blocks consist of non-compact elliptically fibered Calabi-Yau fourfolds which also admit a K3 fibration. The compact elliptic model obtained by gluing need not have a globally defined K3 fibration. By replacing the K3 fiber of each F-theory building block with a T^2, we reach building blocks in a heterotic dual vacuum which includes a position dependent dilaton and three-form flux. These building blocks are glued together to reach a heterotic flux background. We argue that in these vacua, the gauge fields of the heterotic string become localized, and remain dynamical even when gravity decouples. This enables a heterotic dual for the hyperflux GUT breaking mechanism which has recently figured prominently in F-theory GUT models. We illustrate our general proposal with some explicit examples.

A Novel Skew-Hamiltonian Isotropic Lanczos Algorithm for Spectral Conformal Parameterizations

Numerous methods for computing conformal mesh paramterizations has been developed due to the vast applications in the field of geometry processing. Spectral conformal parameterization (SCP) is one of these methods to computing a quality conformal parameterization based on the spectral technique. SCP focus on a generalized eigenvalue problem (GEP) $L_{C}\mathbf{f} = λB\mathbf{f}$ whose eigenvector(s) associated with the smallest positive eigenvalue(s) will provide the parameterization result. This paper devotes to study a novel eigensolver for this GEP. Based on the structures of matrix pair $(L_{C},B)$, we show that this GEP can be transformed into a small-scaled compressed deating standard eigenvalue problem with a symmetric positive definite skew-Hamiltonian operator. We then propose a skew-Hamiltonian isotropic Lanczos algorithm (SHILA) to solve the reducing problem. Numerical experiments show that our compressed deating skill remove the inuence of the kernel of $L_{C}$ and transform the original problem to a more robust system. The novel SHILA method can effective avoid the disturbance of duplicate eigenvalues. As a result, our numerical eigensolver can accurately and efficiently compute the conformal parameterization based on the spectral model of SCP.

A mathematical theory of D-string world-sheet instantons, II: Moduli stack of $Z$-(semi)stable morphisms from Azumaya nodal curves with a fundamental module to a projective Calabi-Yau 3-fold

In this Part II, D(10.2), of D(10), we take D(10.1) (arXiv:1302.2054 [math.AG]) as the foundation to define the notion of $Z$-semistable morphisms from general Azumaya nodal curves, of genus $\ge 2$, with a fundamental module to a projective Calabi-Yau 3-fold and show that the moduli stack of such $Z$-semistable morphisms of a fixed type is compact. This gives us a counter moduli stack to D-strings as the moduli stack of stable maps in Gromov-Witten theory to the fundamental string. It serves and prepares for us the basis toward a new invariant of Calabi-Yau 3-fold that captures soft-D-string world-sheet instanton numbers in superstring theory. This note is written hand-in-hand with D(10.1) and is to be read side-by-side with ibidem.

Li-Yau inequality on graphs

We prove the Li-Yau gradient estimate for the heat kernel on graphs. The only assumption is a variant of the curvature-dimension inequality, which is purely local, and can be considered as a new notion of curvature for graphs. We compute this curvature for lattices and trees and conclude that it behaves more naturally than the already existing notions of curvature. Moreover, we show that if a graph has non-negative curvature then it has polynomial volume growth. We also derive Harnack inequalities and heat kernel bounds from the gradient estimate, and show how it can be used to strengthen the classical Buser inequality relating the spectral gap and the Cheeger constant of a graph.
