Gauss-Manin connection in disguise: Genus two curves

We describe an algebra of meromorphic functions on the Siegel domain of genus two which contains Siegel modular forms for an arithmetic index six subgroup of the symplectic group and it is closed under three canonical derivations of the Siegel domain. The main ingredients of our study are the moduli of enhanced genus two curves, Gauss-Manin connection and the modular vector fields living on such moduli spaces.

AE-OT-GAN: Training GANs from data specific latent distribution

Though generative adversarial networks (GANs) areprominent models to generate realistic and crisp images, they often encounter the mode collapse problems and arehard to train, which comes from approximating the intrinsicdiscontinuous distribution transform map with continuousDNNs. The recently proposed AE-OT model addresses thisproblem by explicitly computing the discontinuous distribu-tion transform map through solving a semi-discrete optimaltransport (OT) map in the latent space of the autoencoder. However the generated images are blurry. In this paper, wepropose the AE-OT-GAN model to utilize the advantages ofthe both models: generate high quality images and at thesame time overcome the mode collapse/mixture problems.Specifically, we first faithfully embed the low dimensionalimage manifold into the latent space by training an autoen-coder (AE). Then we compute the optimal transport (OT)map that pushes forward the uniform distribution to the la-tent distribution supported on the latent manifold. Finally, our GAN model is trained to generate high quality imagesfrom the latent distribution, the distribution transform mapfrom which to the empirical data distribution will be con-tinuous. The paired data between the latent code and thereal images gives us further constriction about the generator.Experiments on simple MNIST dataset and complex datasetslike Cifar-10 and CelebA show the efficacy and efficiency ofour proposed method.

Higher rank flag sheaves on Surfaces and Vafa-Witten invariants

We study moduli space of holomorphic triples $E_{1}\xrightarrowϕ E_{2}$, composed of torsion-free sheaves $E_{i}, i=1,2$ and a holomorphic mophism between them, over a smooth complex projective surface $S$. The triples are equipped with Schmitt stability condition [Alg Rep Th. 6. 1. pp 1-32, 2003]. We observe that when Schmitt stability parameter $q(m)$ becomes sufficiently large, the moduli space of triples benefits from having a perfect relative and absolute deformation-obstruction theory in some cases. We further generalize our construction by gluing triple moduli spaces, and extend the earlier work of Gholampour-Sheshmani-Yau [arXiv:1701.08899] where the obstruction theory of nested Hilbert schemes over the surface was studied. Here we extend the earlier results to the moduli space of chains$$E_{1}\xrightarrow{ϕ_{1}} E_{2}\xrightarrow{ϕ_{2}} \cdots \xrightarrow{ϕ_{n-1}} E_{n},$$ where $ϕ_{i}$ are injective morphisms and $rk(E_{i})\geq 1, \forall i$. There is a connection, by wallcrossing in the master space in the sense of Mochizuki, between the theory of such higher rank flags, and the theory of Higgs pairs on the surface, which provides the means to relate the flag invariants to the local DT invariants of threefold given by a line bundle on the surface, $X :=Tot(\mathcal{L} \to S)$. The latter, when $\mathcal{L}=ω_{S}$, provides the means to compute the contribution of higher rank flag sheaves to partition function of Vafa-Witten theory on $X$.

Geometric Inequalities for Quasi-Local Masses

In this paper lower bounds are obtained for quasi-local masses in terms of charge, angular momentum, and horizon area. In particular we treat three quasi-local masses based on a Hamiltonian approach, namely the Brown-York, Liu-Yau, and Wang-Yau masses. The geometric inequalities are motivated by analogous results for the ADM mass. They may be interpreted as localized versions of these inequalities, and are also closely tied to the conjectured Bekenstein bounds for entropy of macroscopic bodies. In addition, we give a new proof of the positivity property for the Wang-Yau mass which is used to remove the spin condition in higher dimensions. Furthermore, we generalize a recent result of Lu and Miao to obtain a localized version of the Penrose inequality for the static Wang-Yau mass.

Nested Hilbert schemes on surfaces: Virtual fundamental class

We construct virtual fundamental classes on nested Hilbert schemes of points and curves in complex nonsingular projective surfaces. These classes recover the virtual classes of Seiberg-Witten theory as well as the (reduced) stable theory, and play a crucial role in the reduced Donaldson-Thomas theory of local-surface-threefolds that we study in [GSY17b] (arXiv:1807.05697). We show that certain integrals against the virtual fundamental classes of punctual nested Hilbert schemes are expressed as integrals over the products of the Hilbert scheme of points. We are able to find explicit formulas for some of these integrals by relating them to Carlsson-Okounkov's vertex operator formulas.

A No-Boundary Method for Numerical Relativity

We propose a method for numerical relativity in which the spatial grid is finite and no outer boundary condition is needed. As a "proof of concept" we implement this method for the case of a self-gravitating, spherically symmetric scalar field.

Period Integrals of CY and General Type Complete Intersections

We develop a global Poincaré residue formula to study period integrals of families of complex manifolds. For any compact complex manifold $X$ equipped with a linear system $V^*$ of generically smooth CY hypersurfaces, the formula expresses period integrals in terms of a canonical global meromorphic top form on $X$. Two important ingredients of our construction are the notion of a CY principal bundle, and a classification of such rank one bundles. We also generalize our construction to CY and general type complete intersections. When $X$ is an algebraic manifold having a sufficiently large automorphism group $G$ and $V^*$ is a linear representation of $G$, we construct a holonomic D-module that governs the period integrals. The construction is based in part on the theory of tautological systems we have developed in the paper \cite{LSY1}, joint with R. Song. The approach allows us to explicitly describe a Picard-Fuchs type system for complete intersection varieties of general types, as well as CY, in any Fano variety, and in a homogeneous space in particular. In addition, the approach provides a new perspective of old examples such as CY complete intersections in a toric variety or partial flag variety.

K3 surfaces from configurations of six lines in $\mathbb{P}^2$ and mirror symmetry I

From the viewpoint of mirror symmetry, we revisit the hypergeometric system $E(3,6)$ for a family of K3 surfaces. We construct a good resolution of the Baily-Borel-Satake compactification of its parameter space, which admits special boundary points (LCSLs) given by normal crossing divisors. We find local isomorphisms between the $E(3,6)$ systems and the associated GKZ systems defined locally on the parameter space and cover the entire parameter space. Parallel structures are conjectured in general for hypergeometric system $E(n,m)$ on Grassmannians. Local solutions and mirror symmetry will be described in a companion paper \cite{HLTYpartII}, where we introduce a K3 analogue of the elliptic lambda function in terms of genus two theta functions.

K3 surfaces from configurations of six lines in $\mathbb{P}^{2}$ and mirror symmetry II --- $λ_{K3}$-functions ---

We continue our study on the hypergeometric system $E(3,6)$ which describes period integrals of the double cover family of K3 surfaces. Near certain special boundary points in the moduli space of the K3 surfaces, we construct the local solutions and determine the so-called mirror maps expressing them in terms of genus two theta functions. These mirror maps are the K3 analogues of the elliptic $λ$-function. We find that there are two non-isomorphic definitions of the lambda functions corresponding to a flip in the moduli space. We also discuss mirror symmetry for the double cover K3 surfaces and their higher dimensional generalizations. A follow up paper will describe more details of the latter.

Existence of Solutions to Mean Field Equations on Graphs

In this paper, we prove two existence results of solutions to mean field equations $$Δu+e^u=ρδ_0$$ and $$Δu=λe^u(e^u-1)+4 π\sum_{j=1}^{M}{δ_{p_j}}$$ on an arbitrary connected finite graph, where $ρ>0$ and $λ>0$ are constants, $M$ is a positive integer, and $p_1,...,p_M$ are arbitrarily chosen vertices on the graph.

Singularity, Sasaki-Einstein manifold, Log del Pezzo surface and $\mathcal{N}=1$ AdS/CFT correspondence: Part I

A five dimensional Sasaki-Einstein (SE) manifold provides a AdS/CFT pair for four dimensional $\mathcal{N}=1$ SCFT, and those pairs are very useful in studying field theory and AdS/CFT correspondence. The space of known SE manifolds is increased significantly in the last decade, and we initiated the study of various field theory properties through the geometric property of these new SE manifolds. There is an associated three dimensional log-terminal singularity $X$ for each SE manifold $L_X$, and for quasi-regular case, there is an associated two dimensional log Del Pezzo surface $(S,Δ)$. The algebraic geometrical methods are quite useful in extracting interesting physical properties from singularity and log Del Pezzo surface. The necessary and sufficient condition for the existence of SE metric on $L_X$ is related to K stability of $X$. Motivated by dual field theory, we propose a conjecture on how to reduce the check of K stability to possibly finite cases, which hopefully would give us a guideline to find a much larger space of SE metrics.

Physicists' $d=3+1$, $N=1$ superspace-time and supersymmetric QFTs from a tower construction in complexified ${\Bbb Z}/2$-graded $C^\infty$-Algebraic Geometry and a purge-evaluation/index-contracting map

The complexified ${\Bbb Z}/2$-graded $C^\infty$-Algebraic Geometry aspect of a superspace(-time) $\widehat{X}$ in Sec.\,1 of D(14.1) (arXiv:1808.05011 [math.DG]) together with the Spin-Statistics Theorem in Quantum Field Theory, which requires fermionic components of a superfield be anticommuting, lead us to the notion of towered superspace(-time) $\widehat{X}^{\widehat{\boxplus}}$ and the built-in purely even physics sector $X^{\mbox{physics}}$ from $\widehat{X}^{\widehat{\boxplus}}$. We use this to reproduce the $d=3+1$, $N=1$ Wess-Zumino model and the $d=3+1$, $N=1$ supersymmetric $U(1)$ gauge theory with matter --- as in, e.g., Chap.\,V and Chap.\,VI \& part of Chap.\,VII of the classical Supersymmetry \& Supergravity textbook by Julius Wess and Jonathan Bagger --- and, hence, recast physicists' two most basic supersymmetric quantum field theories solidly into the realm of (complexified ${\Bbb Z}/2$-graded) $C^\infty$-Algebraic Geometry. Some traditional differential geometers' ways of understanding supersymmetric quantum field theories are incorporated into the notion of a purge-evaluation/index-contracting map ${\cal P}:C^\infty(X^{\mbox{physics}})\rightarrow C^\infty(\widehat{X})$ in the setting. This completes for the current case a $C^\infty$-Algebraic Geometry language we sought for in D(14.1), footnote 2, that can directly link to the study of supersymmetry in particle physics. Once generalized to the nonabelian case in all dimensions and extended $N\ge 2$, this prepares us for a fundamental (as opposed to solitonic) description of super D-branes parallel to Ramond-Neveu-Schwarz fundamental superstrings

Mode Collapse and Regularity of Optimal Transportation Maps

This work builds the connection between the regularity theory of optimal transportation map, Monge-Ampère equation and GANs, which gives a theoretic understanding of the major drawbacks of GANs: convergence difficulty and mode collapse. According to the regularity theory of Monge-Ampère equation, if the support of the target measure is disconnected or just non-convex, the optimal transportation mapping is discontinuous. General DNNs can only approximate continuous mappings. This intrinsic conflict leads to the convergence difficulty and mode collapse in GANs. We test our hypothesis that the supports of real data distribution are in general non-convex, therefore the discontinuity is unavoidable using an Autoencoder combined with discrete optimal transportation map (AE-OT framework) on the CelebA data set. The testing result is positive. Furthermore, we propose to approximate the continuous Brenier potential directly based on discrete Brenier theory to tackle mode collapse. Comparing with existing method, this method is more accurate and effective.

Quantum Statistics and Spacetime Topology: Quantum Surgery Formulas

To formulate the universal constraints of quantum statistics data of generic long-range entangled quantum systems, we introduce the geometric-topology surgery theory on spacetime manifolds where quantum systems reside, cutting and gluing the associated quantum amplitudes, specifically in 2+1 and 3+1 spacetime dimensions. First, we introduce the fusion data for worldline and worldsheet operators capable of creating anyonic excitations of particles and strings, well-defined in gapped states of matter with intrinsic topological orders. Second, we introduce the braiding statistics data of particles and strings, such as the geometric Berry matrices for particle-string Aharonov-Bohm, 3-string, 4-string, or multi-string adiabatic loop braiding process, encoded by submanifold linkings, in the closed spacetime 3-manifolds and 4-manifolds. Third, we derive new `quantum surgery' formulas and constraints, analogous to Verlinde formula associating fusion and braiding statistics data via spacetime surgery, essential for defining the theory of topological orders, 3d and 4d TQFTs and potentially correlated to bootstrap boundary physics such as gapless modes, extended defects, 2d and 3d conformal field theories or quantum anomalies. This article is meant to be an extended and further detailed elaboration of our previous work [arXiv:1602.05951] and Chapter 6 of [arXiv:1602.05569]. Our theory applies to general quantum theories and quantum mechanical systems, also applicable to, but not necessarily requiring the quantum field theory description.

Quasi-local mass at null infinity in Bondi-Sachs coordinates

There are two important statements regarding the Trautman-Bondi mass at null infinity: one is the positivity, and the other is the Bondi mass loss formula, which are both global in nature. In this note, we compute the limit of the Wang-Yau quasi-local mass on unit spheres at null infinity of an asymptotically flat spacetime in the Bondi-Sachs coordinates. The quasi-local mass leads to a local description of the radiation that is purely gravitational at null infinity. In particular, the quasi-local mass is evaluated in terms of the news function of the Bondi-Sachs coordinates.

Quasi-local mass on unit spheres at spatial infinity

In this note, we compute the limit of the Wang-Yau quasi-local mass on unit spheres at spatial infinity of an asymptotically flat initial data set. Similar to the small sphere limit of the Wang-Yau quasi-local mass, we prove that the leading order term of the quasi-local mass recovers the stress-energy tensor. For a vacuum spacetime, the quasi-local mass decays faster and the leading order term is related to the Bel-Robinson tensor. Several new techniques of evaluating quasilocal mass are developed in this note.
