Effects of Mechanical Coupling on the Dynamics of Balancing Tasks

Coupled human balancing tasks are investigated based on both pseudo-neural controllers characterized by time-delayed feedback with random gain and natural human balancing tasks. It is shown numerically that, compared to single balancing tasks, balancing tasks coupled by mechanical structures exhibit enhanced stability against balancing errors in terms of both amplitude and velocity and also improve the tracking ability of the controllers. We then perform an experiment in which numerical pseudo-neural controllers are replaced with natural human balancing tasks carried out using computer mice. The results reveal that the coupling structure generates asymmetric tracking abilities in subjects whose tracking abilities are nearly symmetric in their single balancing tasks.

Dynamical stabilization of matter-wave solitons revisited

We consider dynamical stabilization of Bose-Einstein condensates (BEC) by time-dependent modulation of the scattering length. The problem has been studied before by several methods: Gaussian variational approximation, the method of moments, method of modulated Townes soliton, and the direct averaging of the Gross-Pitaevskii (GP) equation. We summarize these methods and find that the numerically obtained stabilized solution has different configuration than that assumed by the theoretical methods (in particular a phase of the wavefunction is not quadratic with $r$). We show that there is presently no clear evidence for stabilization in a strict sense, because in the numerical experiments only metastable (slowly decaying) solutions have been obtained. In other words, neither numerical nor mathematical evidence for a new kind of soliton solutions have been revealed so far. The existence of the metastable solutions is nevertheless an interesting and complicated phenomenon on its own. We try some non-Gaussian variational trial functions to obtain better predictions for the critical nonlinearity $g_{cr}$ for metastabilization but other dynamical properties of the solutions remain difficult to predict.

Attosecond light pulses to reveal the time-dependent rovibrational motion of the correlated electron pair in helium

We illustrate how attosecond light pulses can be used to directly mapping out the time-dependence of the correlated motion of two excited atomic electrons, discuss how the two-electron correlations manifest themselves in realistic attosecond measurements, and propose the following for experimental exploration: (a) The single ionization signals which directly reveal bending-vibrational motion of the correlated electron pair, (b) and also its rotational motion. (c) The double ionization signals which directly reveal the two-electron density in momentum space. To facilitate the description of the above points, use is made of simple wave packets of doubly-excited states of helium.

Gyroscopic effects in interference of matter waves

A new gyroscopic interference effect stemming from the Galilean translational factor in the matter wave function is pointed out. In contrast to the well-known Sagnac effect that stems from the geometric phase and leads to a shift of interference fringes, this effect causes slanting of the fringes. We illustrate it by calculations for two split cigar-shaped Bose-Einstein condensates under the conditions of a recent experiment, see Y.Shin et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 92, 050405 (2004). Importantly, the measurement of slanting obviates the need of a third reference cloud.

Siegert pseudostate perturbation theory: one- and two-threshold cases

Perturbation theory for the Siegert pseudostates (SPS) [Phys.Rev.A 58, 2077 (1998) and Phys.Rev.A 67, 032714 (2003)] is studied for the case of two energetically separated thresholds. The perturbation formulas for the one-threshold case are derived as a limiting case whereby we reconstruct More's theory for the decaying states [Phys.Rev.A 3,1217(1971)] and amend an error. The perturbation formulas for the two-threshold case have additional terms due to the non-standard orthogonality relationship of the Siegert Pseudostates. We apply the theory to a 2-channel model problem, and find the rate of convergence of the perturbation expansion should be examined with the aide of the variance $D= ||E-\sum_{n}λ^n E^{(n)}||$ instead of the real and imaginary parts of the perturbation energy individually.

Imaging of emission patterns in a T-shaped quantum wire laser

Spatially and spectrally resolved microscopic images of spontaneous and stimulated emissions are imaged at the mirror facets of a GaAs T-shaped quantum wire laser with high uniformity. Laser emission from the one-dimensional ground state reveals a circular image located at the core of a T-shaped optical waveguide but significantly smaller in area than the low power spontaneous emission from the same waveguide. These images unambiguously allow assignment of all spontaneous and laser emissions to the wire ground state and respective intersecting wells in the structure.

Lasing from a single quantum wire

A laser with an active volume consisting of only a single quantum wire in the 1-dimensional (1-D) ground state is demonstrated. The single wire is formed quantum-mechanically at the T-intersection of a 14 nm Al_{0.07}Ga_{0.93}As quantum well and a 6 nm GaAs quantum well, and is embedded in a 1-D single-mode optical waveguide. We observe single-mode lasing from the quantum wire ground state by optical pumping. The laser operates from 5 to 60 K, and has a low threshold pumping power of 5 mW at 5 K.
