Gravitational wave cosmology I: high frequency approximation

In this paper, we systematically study gravitational waves (GWs) produced by remote compact astrophysical sources. To describe such GWs properly, we introduce three scales, $λ, \; L_c$ and $L$, denoting, respectively, the typical wavelength of GWs, the scale of the cosmological perturbations, and the size of the observable universe. For GWs to be detected by the current and foreseeable detectors, the condition $λ\ll L_c \ll L$ holds, and such GWs can be well approximated as high-frequency GWs. In order for the backreaction of the GWs to the background to be negligible, we must assume that $\left|h_{μν}\right| \ll 1$, in addition to the condition $ε\ll 1$, which are also the conditions for the linearized Einstein field equations for $h_{μν}$ to be valid, where $g_{μν} = γ_{μν} + εh_{μν}$, and $γ_{μν}$ denotes the background. To simplify the field equations, we show that the spatial, traceless, and Lorentz gauge conditions can be imposed simultaneously, even when the background is not vacuum, as long as the high-frequency GW approximation is valid. However, to develop the formulas that can be applicable to as many cases as possible, we first write down explicitly the linearized Einstein field equations by imposing only the spatial gauge. Applying the general formulas together with the geometrical optics approximation to such GWs, we find that they still move along null geodesics and its polarization bi-vector is parallel-transported, even when both the cosmological scalar and tensor perturbations are present. In addition, we also calculate the gravitational integrated Sachs-Wolfe effects, whereby the dependences of the amplitude, phase and luminosity distance of the GWs on these two kinds of perturbations are read out explicitly.

Addressing $H_0$ tension by means of VCDM

In this letter we propose a reduction of the $H_0$ tension puzzle by means of a theory of minimally modified gravity which is dubbed VCDM. After confronting the theory with the experiments, we find that the data allow for a low-redshift transition in the expansion history of the universe at either $z\simeq 0.3 $ or $z \simeq 1.8\,$, corresponding to one of the two local minima of the total $χ^2$. From the bestfit values the total fitness parameter is improved by $Δχ^2 \simeq 12$, for the data set considered. We then infer the local Hubble expansion rate today within this theory by means of low redshift Pantheon data. The resulting local Hubble expansion rate today is $H^{\rm{loc}}_0=73.6\pm1.4$. We find the tension is reduced within the VCDM theory.

Inflationary gravitational waves in consistent $D\to 4$ Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity

We study the slow-roll single field inflation in the context of the consistent $D\to4$ Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity that was recently proposed in \cite{Aoki:2020lig}. In addition to the standard attractor regime, we find a new attractor regime which we call the Gauss-Bonnet attractor as the dominant contribution comes from the Gauss-Bonnet term. Around this attractor solution, we find power spectra and spectral tilts for the curvature perturbations and gravitational waves (GWs) and also a model-independent consistency relation among observable quantities. The Gauss-Bonnet term provides a nonlinear $k^4$ term to the GWs dispersion relation which has the same order as the standard linear $k^2$ term at the time of horizon crossing around the Gauss-Bonnet attractor. The Gauss-Bonnet attractor regime thus provides a new scenario for the primordial GWs which can be tested by observations. Finally, we study non-Gaussianity of GWs in this model and estimate the nonlinear parameters $f^{s_1s_2s_3}_{\rm NL,\;sq}$ and $f^{s_1s_2s_3}_{\rm NL,\;eq}$ by fitting the computed GWs bispectra with the local-type and equilateral-type templates respectively at the squeezed limit and at the equilateral shape. For helicities $(+++)$ and $( -- )$, $f^{s_1s_2s_3}_{\rm NL,\;sq}$ is larger while $f^{s_1s_2s_3}_{\rm NL,\;eq}$ is larger for helicities $(++-)$ and $(--+)$.

Minimal exponential measure model in the post-Newtonian limit

We examine the post-Newtonian limit of the minimal exponential measure (MEMe) model presented in [J. C. Feng, S. Carloni, Phys. Rev. D 101, 064002 (2020)] using an extension of the parameterized post-Newtonian (PPN) formalism which is also suitable for other type-I minimally modified Gravity theories. The new PPN expansion is then used to calculate the monopole term of the post-Newtonian gravitational potential and to perform an analysis of circular orbits within spherically symmetric matter distributions. The latter shows that the behavior does not differ significantly from that of general relativity for realistic values of the MEMe model parameter $q$. Instead the former shows that one can use precision measurements of Newton's constant $G$ to improve the constraint on $q$ by up to $10$ orders of magnitude.

Cosmology and gravitational waves in consistent $D\to 4$ Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity

In a very recent paper [1], we have proposed a novel $4$-dimensional gravitational theory with two dynamical degrees of freedom, which serves as a consistent realization of $D\to4$ Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity with the rescaled Gauss-Bonnet coupling constant $\tildeα$. This has been made possible by breaking a part of diffeomorphism invariance, and thus is consistent with the Lovelock theorem. In the present paper, we study cosmological implications of the theory in the presence of a perfect fluid and clarify the similarities and differences between the results obtained from the consistent $4$-dimensional theory and those from the previously considered, naive (and inconsistent) $D\rightarrow 4$ limit. Studying the linear perturbations, we explicitly show that the theory only has tensorial gravitational degrees of freedom (besides the matter degree) and that for $\tildeα>0$ and $\dot{H}<0$, perturbations are free of any pathologies so that we can implement the setup to construct early and/or late time cosmological models. Interestingly, a $k^4$ term appears in the dispersion relation of tensor modes which plays significant roles at small scales and makes the theory different than not only general relativity but also many other modified gravity theories as well as the naive (and inconsistent) $D\to 4$ limit. Taking into account the $k^4$ term, the observational constraint on the propagation of gravitational waves yields the bound $\tildeα \lesssim (10\,{\rm meV})^{-2}$. This is the first bound on the only parameter (besides the Newton's constant and the choice of a constraint that stems from a temporal gauge fixing) in the consistent theory of $D\to 4$ Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity.

Bounds on the Horndeski Gauge-Gravity Coupling

The Horndeski gauge-gravity coupling is the leading non-minimal interaction between gravity and gauge bosons, and it preserves all the symmetries and the number of physical degrees of freedom of the standard model of particle physics and general relativity. In this paper we study the effects of the non-minimal interaction in astronomy and cosmology, and obtain upper bounds on the associated dimensionless coupling constant $λ$. From the modification of equations of motion of gauge bosons applied to compact astronomical objects, we find upper bounds $|λ| \lesssim 10^{88}$, $|λ| \lesssim 10^{75}$ and $|λ| \lesssim 10^{84}$ from a black hole shadow, neutron stars and white dwarfs, respectively. The bound $|λ| \lesssim 10^{75}$ that is deduced from neutron stars is the strongest and provides twenty orders of magnitude improvement of the previously known best bound on this parameter. On the other hand, the effects of this term on modification of the gravitational Poisson equation lead to a weaker bound $|λ| \lesssim 10^{98}$. From the propagation of gravitational waves we also find $|λ| \lesssim 10^{119}$, which is even weaker.

Analytic study of dark photon and gravitational wave production from axion

Axion-like fields heavier than about $10^{-27}$eV are expected to oscillate in the radiation dominated epoch when the Hubble parameter drops below their mass. Considering the Chern-Simons coupling with a dark gauge boson, large amount of dark photons are produced during a short time interval through tachyonic resonance instability. The produced dark photons then source gravitational tensor modes leading to chiral gravitational waves. Through this process, one can indirectly probe a large parameter space of coupled axion-dark photon models. In this work we first find an analytic expression for the number density of the dark photons produced during the tachyonic resonance regime. Second, by using the saddle point approximation we find an analytic expression for the gravitational wave spectrum in terms of the mass, coupling and misalignment angle. Our analytic results can be used for the observational analysis of these types of scenarios.

Vector dark matter production from inflation with symmetry breaking

We present a scenario of vector dark matter production from symmetry breaking at the end of inflation. In this model, the accumulated energy density associated with the quantum fluctuations of the dark photon accounts for the present energy density of dark matter. The inflaton is a real scalar field while a heavy complex scalar field, such as the waterfall of hybrid inflation, is charged under the dark gauge field. After the heavy field becomes tachyonic at the end of inflation, rolling rapidly towards its global minimum, the dark photon acquires mass via the Higgs mechanism. To prevent the decay of the vector field energy density during inflation, we introduce couplings between the inflaton and the gauge field such that the energy is pumped to the dark sector. The setup can generate the observed dark matter abundance for a wide range of the dark photon's mass and with the reheat temperature around $10^{12}$ GeV. The model predicts the formation of cosmic strings at the end of inflation with the tensions which are consistent with the CMB upper bounds.

Gravitational Wave Physics and Astronomy in the nascent era

The detections of gravitational waves (GW) by LIGO/Virgo collaborations provide various possibilities to physics and astronomy. We are quite sure that GW observations will develop a lot both in precision and in number owing to the continuous works for the improvement of detectors, including the expectation to the newly joined detector, KAGRA, and the planned detector, LIGO-India. In this occasion, we review the fundamental outcomes and prospects of gravitational wave physics and astronomy. We survey the development focusing on representative sources of gravitational waves: binary black holes, binary neutron stars, and supernovae. We also summarize the role of gravitational wave observations as a probe of new physics.

Non-uniqueness of massless transverse-traceless graviton

We study a theory of minimally modified gravity called cuscuton/VCDM that propagates only two gravitational degrees of freedom. Despite being apparently different from general relativity (GR), it is in principle possible that this theory might be obtained via a field redefinition starting from the GR action. This would make the vacuum theory equivalent to GR and the theory would differ from GR only in the presence of matter. In this paper, studying the dispersion relation of gravitational waves and the dynamics of the Bianchi-I universe, we prove that such a field redefinition does not exist and that the theory differs from GR already in vacuum.

Stealth dark energy in scordatura DHOST theory

A stealth de Sitter solution in scalar-tensor theories has an exact de Sitter background metric and a nontrivial scalar field profile. Recently, in the context of Degenerate Higher-Order Scalar-Tensor (DHOST) theories it was shown that stealth de Sitter solutions suffer from either infinite strong coupling or gradient instability for scalar field perturbations. The sound speed squared is either vanishing or negative. In the first case, the strong coupling scale is zero and thus lower than the energy scale of any physical phenomena. From the viewpoint of effective field theory, this issue is naturally resolved by introducing a controlled detuning of the degeneracy condition dubbed scordatura, recovering a version of ghost condensation. In this paper we construct a viable dark energy model in the scordatura DHOST theory based on a stealth cosmological solution, in which the metric is the same as in the standard $Λ$CDM model and the scalar field profile is linearly time-dependent. We show that the scordatura mechanism resolves the strong coupling and gradient instability. Further, we find that the scordatura is also necessary to make the quasi-static limit well-defined, which implies that the subhorizon observables are inevitably affected by the scordatura. We derive the effective gravitational coupling and the correction to the friction term for the subhorizon evolution of the linear dark matter energy density contrast as well as the Weyl potential and the gravitational slip parameter. In the absence of the scordatura, the quasi-static approximation would break down at all scales around stealth cosmological solutions even if the issue of the infinite strong coupling is unjustly disregarded. Therefore previous estimations of the subhorizon evolution of matter density contrast in modified gravity in the literature need to be revisited by taking into account the scordatura effect.

Lifshitz scaling, ringing black holes, and superradiance

We investigate the ringdown waveform and reflectivity of a Lifshitz scalar field around a fixed Schwarzschild black hole. The radial wave equation is modified due to the Lorentz breaking terms, which leads to a diversity of ringdown waveforms. Also, it turns out that Lifshitz waves scattered by the Schwarzschild black hole exhibits superradiance. The Lorentz breaking terms lead to superluminal propagation and high-frequency modes can enter and leave the interior of the Killing horizon where negativity of energy is not prohibited. This allows the Lifshitz waves to carry out additional positive energy to infinity while leaving negative energy inside the Killing horizon, similar to the Penrose process in the ergosphere of a Kerr spacetime. Another interesting phenomenon is emergence of long-lived quasinormal modes, associated with roton-type dispersion relations. These effects drastically modify the greybody factor of a microscopic black hole, whose Hawking temperature is comparable with or higher than the Lifshitz energy scale.

Black holes in a type-II minimally modified gravity

In the context of the recently proposed type-II minimally modified gravity theory, i.e. a metric theory of gravity with two local physical degrees of freedom that does not possess an Einstein frame, we study spherically symmetric vacuum solutions to explore the strong gravity regime. Despite the absence of extra degrees of freedom in the gravity sector, the vacuum solutions are locally different from the Schwarzschild or Schwarzschild-(A)dS metric in general and thus the Birkhoff theorem does not hold. The general solutions are parameterized by several free functions of time and admit regular trapping and event horizons. Depending on the choice of the free functions of time, the null convergence condition may be violated in vacuum. Even in the static limit, while the solutions in this limit reduce to the Schwarzschild or Schwarzschild-(A)dS solutions, the effective cosmological constant deduced from the solutions is in general different from the cosmological value that is determined by the action. Nonetheless, once a set of suitable asymptotic conditions is imposed so that the solutions represent compact objects in the corresponding cosmological setup, the standard Schwarzschild or Schwarzschild-(A)dS metric is recovered and the effective cosmological constant agrees with the value inferred from the action.

Minimal Theory of Bigravity: construction and cosmology

Following the path of minimalism in alternative theories of gravity, we construct the "Minimal Theory of Bigravity" (MTBG), a theory of two interacting spin-2 fields that propagates only four local degrees of freedom instead of the usual seven ones and that allows for the same homogeneous and isotropic cosmological solutions as in Hassan-Rosen bigravity (HRBG). Starting from a precursor theory that propagates six local degrees of freedom, we carefully choose additional constraints to eliminate two of them to construct the theory. Investigating the cosmology of MTBG, we find that it accommodates two different branches of homogeneous and isotropic background solutions, equivalent on-shell to the two branches that are present in HRBG. Those branches in MTBG differ however from the HRBG ones at the perturbative level, are both perfectly healthy and do not exhibit strong coupling issues nor ghost instabilities. In the so-called self-accelerating branch, characterized by the presence of an effective cosmological constant, the scalar and vector sectors are the same as in General Relativity (GR). In the so-called normal branch, the scalar sector exhibits non-trivial phenomenology, while its vector sector remains the same as in GR. In both branches, the tensor sector exhibits the usual HRBG features: an effective mass term and oscillations of the gravitons. Therefore MTBG provides a stable nonlinear completion of the cosmology in HRBG.

Dark photon dark matter from charged inflaton

We present a scenario of vector dark matter production during inflation containing a complex inflaton field which is charged under a dark gauge field and which has a symmetry breaking potential. As the inflaton field rolls towards the global minimum of the potential the dark photons become massive with a mass which can be larger than the Hubble scale during inflation. The accumulated energy of the quantum fluctuations of the produced dark photons gives the observed relic density of the dark matter for a wide range of parameters. Depending on the parameters, either the transverse modes or the longitudinal mode or their combination can generate the observed dark matter relic energy density.

Weakening gravity for dark matter in a type-II minimally modified gravity

We propose a new cosmological framework in which the strength of the gravitational force acted on dark matter at late time can be weaker than that on the standard matter fields without introducing extra gravitational degrees of freedom. The framework integrates dark matter into a type-II minimally modified gravity that was recently proposed as a dark energy mimicker. The idea that makes such a framework possible consists of coupling a dark matter Lagrangian and a cosmological constant to the metric in a canonically transformed frame of general relativity (GR). On imposing a gauge fixing constraint, which explicitly breaks the temporal diffeomorphism invariance, we keep the number of gravitational degrees of freedom to be two, as in GR. We then make the inverse canonical transformation to bring the theory back to the original frame, where one can add the standard matter fields. This framework contains two free functions of time which specify the generating functional of the above mentioned canonical transformation and which are then used in order to realize desired time evolutions of both the Hubble expansion rate $H(z)$ and the effective gravitational constant for dark matter $G_{\rm eff}(z)$. The aim of this paper is therefore to provide a new framework to address the two puzzles present in today's cosmology, i.e. the $H_0$ tension and the $S_8$ tension, simultaneously. When the dark matter is cold in this framework, we dub the corresponding cosmological model the V Canonical Cold Dark Matter (VCCDM), as the cosmological constant $Λ$ in the standard $Λ$CDM is replaced by a function $V(ϕ)$ of an auxiliary field $ϕ$ and the CDM is minimally coupled to the metric in a canonically transformed frame.

Minimally modified gravity with an auxiliary constraint: a Hamiltonian construction

Working directly with a general Hamiltonian for the spacetime metric with the $3+1$ decomposition and keeping only the spatial covariance, we investigate the possibility of reducing the number of degrees of freedom by introducing an auxiliary constraint. The auxiliary constraint is considered as part of the definition of the theory. Through a general Hamiltonian analysis, we find the conditions for the Hamiltonian as well as for the auxiliary constraint, under which the theory propagates two tensorial degrees of freedom only. The class of theories satisfying these conditions can be viewed as a new construction for the type-II minimally modified gravity theories, which propagate the same degrees of freedom of but are not equivalent to general relativity in the vacuum. We also illustrate our formalism by a concrete example, and derive the dispersion relation for the gravitational waves, which can be constrained by observations.

Partial UV Completion of $P(X)$ from a Curved Field Space

The $k$-essence theory is a prototypical class of scalar-field models that already gives rich phenomenology and has been a target of extensive studies in cosmology. General forms of shift-symmetric $k$-essence are known to suffer from formation of caustics in a planar-symmetric configuration, with the only exceptions of canonical and DBI-/cuscuton-type kinetic terms. With this in mind, we seek for multi-field caustic-free completions of a general class of shift-symmetric $k$-essence models in this paper. The field space in UV theories is naturally curved, and we introduce the scale of the curvature as the parameter that controls the mass of the heavy field(s) that would be integrated out in the process of EFT reduction. By numerical methods, we demonstrate that the introduction of a heavy field indeed resolves the caustic problem by invoking its motion near the would-be caustic formation. We further study the cosmological application of the model. By expanding the equations with respect to the curvature scale of the field space, we prove that the EFT reduction is successfully done by taking the limit of infinite curvature, both for the background and perturbation, with gravity included. The next leading-order computation is consistently conducted and shows that the EFT reduction breaks down in the limit of vanishing sound speed of the perturbation.
