Cosmological constraints and phenomenology of a beyond-Horndeski model

We study observational constraints on a specific dark energy model in the framework of Gleyzes-Langlois-Piazza-Vernizzi theories, which extends the Galileon ghost condensate (GGC) to the domain of beyond Horndeski theories. In this model, we show that the Planck cosmic microwave background (CMB) data, combined with datasets of baryon acoustic oscillations, supernovae type Ia, and redshift-space distortions, give the tight upper bound $|α_{\rm H}^{(0)}| \le {\cal O}(10^{-6})$ on today's beyond-Horndeski (BH) parameter $α_{\rm H}$. This is mostly attributed to the shift of CMB acoustic peaks induced by the early-time changes of cosmological background and perturbations arising from the dominance of $α_{\rm H}$ in the dark energy density. In comparison to the $Λ$-cold-dark-matter ($Λ$CDM) model, our BH model suppresses the large-scale integrated-Sachs-Wolfe (ISW) tail of CMB temperature anisotropies due to the existence of cubic Galileons, and it modifies the small-scale CMB power spectrum because of the different background evolution. We find that the BH model considered fits the data better than $Λ$CDM according to the $χ^2$ statistics, yet the deviance information criterion (DIC) slightly favors the latter. Given the fact that our BH model with $α_{\rm H}=0$ (i.e., the GGC model) is favored over $Λ$CDM even by the DIC, there are no particular signatures for the departure from Horndeski theories in current observations.

Dark energy in Horndeski theories after GW170817: A review

The gravitational-wave event GW170817 from a binary neutron star merger together with the electromagnetic counterpart showed that the speed of gravitational waves $c_t$ is very close to that of light for the redshift $z<0.009$. This places tight constraints on dark energy models constructed in the framework of modified gravitational theories. We review models of the late-time cosmic acceleration in scalar-tensor theories with second-order equations of motion (dubbed Horndeski theories) by paying particular attention to the evolution of dark energy equation of state and observables relevant to the cosmic growth history. We provide a gauge-ready formulation of scalar perturbations in full Horndeski theories and estimate observables associated with the evolution of large-scale structures, cosmic microwave background, and weak lensing by employing a so-called quasi-static approximation for the modes deep inside the sound horizon. In light of the recent observational bound of $c_t$, we also classify surviving dark energy models into four classes depending on different structure-formation patterns and discuss how they can be observationally distinguished from each other. In particular, the nonminimally coupled theories in which the scalar field $ϕ$ has a coupling with the Ricci scalar $R$ of the form $G_4(ϕ) R$, including $f(R)$ gravity, can be tightly constrained not only from the cosmic expansion and growth histories but also from the variation of screened gravitational couplings. The cross correlation of integrated Sachs-Wolfe signal with galaxy distributions can be a key observable for placing bounds on the relative ratio of cubic Galileon density to total dark energy density. The dawn of gravitational-wave astronomy will open up a new window to constrain nonminimally coupled theories further by the modified luminosity distance of tensor perturbations.

Constraints on massive vector dark energy models from integrated Sachs-Wolfe-galaxy cross-correlations

The gravitational-wave event GW170817, together with the electromagnetic counterpart, shows that the speed of tensor perturbations $c_T$ on the cosmological background is very close to that of light $c$ for the redshift $z<0.009$. In generalized Proca theories, the Lagrangians compatible with the condition $c_T=c$ are constrained to be derivative interactions up to cubic order, besides those corresponding to intrinsic vector modes. We place observational constraints on a dark energy model in cubic-order generalized Proca theories with intrinsic vector modes by running the Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) code. We use the cross-correlation data of the integrated Sachs-Wolfe (ISW) signal and galaxy distributions in addition to the data sets of cosmic microwave background, baryon acoustic oscillations, type Ia supernovae, local measurements of the Hubble expansion rate, and redshift-space distortions. We show that, unlike cubic-order scalar-tensor theories, the existence of intrinsic vector modes allows the possibility for evading the ISW-galaxy anticorrelation incompatible with the current observational data. As a result, we find that the dark energy model in cubic-order generalized Proca theories exhibits a better fit to the data than the cosmological constant, even by including the ISW-galaxy correlation data in the MCMC analysis.

Anisotropic inflation with coupled $\boldsymbol{p}$-forms

We study the cosmology in the presence of arbitrary couplings between $p$-forms in 4-dimensional space-time for a general action respecting gauge symmetry and parity invariance. The interaction between 0-form (scalar field $ϕ$) and 3-form fields gives rise to an effective potential $V_{\rm eff}(ϕ)$ for the former after integrating out the contribution of the latter. We explore the dynamics of inflation on an anisotropic cosmological background for a coupled system of 0-, 1-, and 2-forms. In the absence of interactions between 1- and 2-forms, we derive conditions under which the anisotropic shear endowed with nearly constant energy densities of 1- and 2-forms survives during slow-roll inflation for an arbitrary scalar potential $V_{\rm eff}(ϕ)$. If 1- and 2-forms are coupled to each other, we show the existence of a new class of anisotropic inflationary solutions in which the energy density of 2-form is sustained by that of 1-form through their interactions. Our general analytic formulas for the anisotropic shear are also confirmed by the numerical analysis for a concrete inflaton potential.

Anisotropic $2$-form dark energy

We study the dynamics of dark energy in the presence of a 2-form field coupled to a canonical scalar field $ϕ$. We consider the coupling proportional to $e^{-μϕ/M_{\rm pl}} H_{αβγ}H^{αβγ}$ and the scalar potential $V(ϕ) \propto e^{-λϕ/M_{\rm pl}}$, where $H_{αβγ}$ is the 2-form field strength, $μ, λ$ are constants, and $M_{\rm pl}$ is the reduced Planck mass. We show the existence of an anisotropic matter-dominated scaling solution followed by a stable accelerated fixed point with a non-vanishing shear. Even if $λ\geq {\cal O}(1)$, it is possible to realize the dark energy equation of state $w_{\rm DE}$ close to $-1$ at low redshifts for $μ\gg λ$. The existence of anisotropic hair and the oscillating behavior of $w_{\rm DE}$ are key features for distinguishing our scenario from other dark energy models like quintessence.

Tracker and scaling solutions in DHOST theories

In quadratic-order degenerate higher-order scalar-tensor (DHOST) theories compatible with gravitational-wave constraints, we derive the most general Lagrangian allowing for tracker solutions characterized by $\dotϕ/H^p={\rm constant}$, where $\dotϕ$ is the time derivative of a scalar field $ϕ$, $H$ is the Hubble expansion rate, and $p$ is a constant. While the tracker is present up to the cubic-order Horndeski Lagrangian $L=c_2X-c_3X^{(p-1)/(2p)} \square ϕ$, where $c_2, c_3$ are constants and $X$ is the kinetic energy of $ϕ$, the DHOST interaction breaks this structure for $p \neq 1$. Even in the latter case, however, there exists an approximate tracker solution in the early cosmological epoch with the nearly constant field equation of state $w_ϕ=-1-2p\dot{H}/(3H^2)$. The scaling solution, which corresponds to $p=1$, is the unique case in which all the terms in the field density $ρ_ϕ$ and the pressure $P_ϕ$ obey the scaling relation $ρ_ϕ \propto P_ϕ \propto H^2$. Extending the analysis to the coupled DHOST theories with the field-dependent coupling $Q(ϕ)$ between the scalar field and matter, we show that the scaling solution exists for $Q(ϕ)=1/(μ_1 ϕ+μ_2)$, where $μ_1$ and $μ_2$ are constants. For the constant $Q$, i.e., $μ_1=0$, we derive fixed points of the dynamical system by using the general Lagrangian with scaling solutions. This result can be applied to the model construction of late-time cosmic acceleration preceded by the scaling $ϕ$-matter-dominated epoch.

Most general cubic-order Horndeski Lagrangian allowing for scaling solutions and the application to dark energy

In cubic-order Horndeski theories where a scalar field $ϕ$ is coupled to nonrelativistic matter with a field-dependent coupling $Q(ϕ)$, we derive the most general Lagrangian having scaling solutions on the isotropic and homogenous cosmological background. For constant $Q$ including the case of vanishing coupling, the corresponding Lagrangian reduces to the form $L=Xg_2(Y)-g_3(Y)\square ϕ$, where $X=-\partial_μϕ\partial^μϕ/2$ and $g_2, g_3$ are arbitrary functions of $Y=Xe^{λϕ}$ with constant $λ$. We obtain the fixed points of the scaling Lagrangian for constant $Q$ and show that the $ϕ$-matter-dominated-epoch ($ϕ$MDE) is present for the cubic coupling $g_3(Y)$ containing inverse power-law functions of $Y$. The stability analysis around the fixed points indicates that the $ϕ$MDE can be followed by a stable critical point responsible for the cosmic acceleration. We propose a concrete dark energy model allowing for such a cosmological sequence and show that the ghost and Laplacian instabilities can be avoided even in the presence of the cubic coupling.

Gauge-ready formulation of cosmological perturbations in scalar-vector-tensor theories

In scalar-vector-tensor (SVT) theories with parity invariance, we perform a gauge-ready formulation of cosmological perturbations on the flat Friedmann-Lemaître-Robertson-Walker (FLRW) background by taking into account a matter perfect fluid. We derive the second-order action of scalar perturbations and resulting linear perturbation equations of motion without fixing any gauge conditions. Depending on physical problems at hand, most convenient gauges can be chosen to study the development of inhomogeneities in the presence of scalar and vector fields coupled to gravity. This versatile framework, which encompasses Horndeski and generalized Proca theories as special cases, is applicable to a wide variety of cosmological phenomena including nonsingular cosmology, inflation, and dark energy. By deriving conditions for the absence of ghost and Laplacian instabilities in several different gauges, we show that, unlike Horndeski theories, it is possible to evade no-go arguments for the absence of stable nonsingular bouncing/genesis solutions in both generalized Proca and SVT theories. We also apply our framework to the case in which scalar and vector fields are responsible for dark energy and find that the separation of observables relevant to the evolution of matter perturbations into tensor, vector, and scalar sectors is transparent in the unitary gauge. Unlike the flat gauge chosen in the literature, this result is convenient to confront SVT theories with observations associated with the cosmic growth history.

Inflation with mixed helicities and its observational imprint on CMB

In the framework of effective field theories with prominent helicity-0 and helicity-1 fields coupled to each other via a dimension-3 operator, we study the dynamics of inflation driven by the helicity-0 mode, with a given potential energy, as well as the evolution of cosmological perturbations, influenced by the presence of a mixing term between both helicities. In this scenario, the temporal component of the helicity-1 mode is an auxiliary field and can be integrated out in terms of the time derivative of the helicity-0 mode, so that the background dynamics effectively reduces to that in single-field inflation modulated by a parameter $β$ associated to the coupling between helicity-0 and helicity-1 modes. We discuss the evolution of a longitudinal scalar perturbation $ψ$ and an inflaton fluctuation $δϕ$, and explicitly show that a particular combination of these two, which corresponds to an isocurvature mode, is subject to exponential suppression by the vector mass comparable to the Hubble expansion rate during inflation. Furthermore, we find that the effective single-field description corrected by $β$ also holds for the power spectrum of curvature perturbations generated during inflation. We compute the standard inflationary observables such as the scalar spectral index $n_s$ and the tensor-to-scalar ratio $r$ and confront several inflaton potentials with the recent observational data provided by Planck 2018. Our results show that the coupling between helicity-0 and helicity-1 modes can lead to a smaller value of the tensor-to-scalar ratio especially for small-field inflationary models, so our scenario exhibits even better compatibility with the current observational data.

Dark energy in scalar-vector-tensor theories

The scalar-vector-tensor theories with second-order equations of motion can accommodate both Horndeski and generalized Proca theories as specific cases. In the presence of a perfect fluid, we study the cosmology in such a most general scheme of scalar-vector-tensor theories with parity invariance by paying particular attention to the application to dark energy. We obtain a closed-form expression of the background equations of motion by using coefficients appearing in the second-order action of scalar perturbations. We also derive conditions for the absence of ghost and Laplacian instabilities of tensor and vector perturbations and show that the existence of matter does not substantially modify the stabilities of dynamical degrees of freedom in the small-scale limit. On the other hand, the sound speed of scalar perturbations is affected by the presence of matter. Employing the quasi-static approximation for scalar perturbations deep inside the sound horizon, we derive analytic expressions of Newtonian and weak lensing gravitational potentials as well as two scalar perturbations arising from the scalar and vector fields. We apply our general framework to dark energy theories with the tensor propagation speed equivalent to the speed of light and show that the observables associated with the growth of matter perturbations and weak lensing potentials are generally affected by intrinsic vector modes and by interactions between scalar and vector fields.

New scaling solutions in cubic Horndeski theories

We propose a viable dark energy scenario in the presence of cubic Horndeski interactions and a standard scalar-field kinetic term with two exponential potentials. We show the existence of new scaling solutions along which the cubic coupling $G_3$ provides an important contribution to the field density that scales in the same way as the background fluid density. The solutions finally exit to the epoch of cosmic acceleration driven by a scalar-field dominated fixed point arising from the second exponential potential. We clarify the viable parameter space in which all the theoretically consistent conditions including those for the absence of ghost and Laplacian instabilities are satisfied on scaling and scalar-field dominated critical points. In comparison to Quintessence with the same scalar potential, we find that the cubic coupling gives rise to some novel features: (i) the allowed model parameter space is wider in that a steeper potential can drive the cosmic acceleration; (ii) the dark energy equation of state $w_ϕ$ today can be closer to $-1$ relative to Quintessence; (iii) even if the density associated with the cubic coupling dominates over the standard field density in the scaling era, the former contribution tends to be suppressed at low redshifts. We also compute quantities associated with the growth of matter perturbations and weak lensing potentials under the quasi-static approximation in the sub-horizon limit and show that the cubic coupling leads to the modified evolution of perturbations which can be distinguished from Quintessence.

Cosmology in scalar-vector-tensor theories

We study the cosmology on the Friedmann-Lemaitre-Robertson-Walker background in scalar-vector-tensor theories with a broken $U(1)$ gauge symmetry. For parity-invariant interactions arising in scalar-vector-tensor theories with second-order equations of motion, we derive conditions for the absence of ghosts and Laplacian instabilities associated with tensor, vector, and scalar perturbations at linear order. This general result is applied to the computation of the primordial tensor power spectrum generated during inflation as well as to the speed of gravity relevant to dark energy. We also construct a concrete inflationary model in which a temporal vector component $A_0$ contributes to the dynamics of cosmic acceleration besides a scalar field $ϕ$ through their kinetic mixings. In this model, we show that all the stability conditions of perturbations can be consistently satisfied during inflation and subsequent reheating.

Odd-parity stability of hairy black holes in $U(1)$ gauge-invariant scalar-vector-tensor theories

In scalar-vector-tensor theories with $U(1)$ gauge invariance, it was recently shown that there exists a new type of hairy black hole (BH) solutions induced by a cubic-order scalar-vector interaction. In this paper, we derive conditions for the absence of ghosts and Laplacian instabilities against odd-parity perturbations on a static and spherically symmetric background for most general $U(1)$ gauge-invariant scalar-vector-tensor theories with second-order equations of motion. We apply those conditions to hairy BH solutions arising from the cubic-order coupling and show that the odd-parity stability in the gravity sector is always ensured outside the event horizon with the speed of gravity equivalent to that of light. We also study the case in which quartic-order interactions are present in addition to the cubic coupling and obtain conditions under which black holes are stable against odd-parity perturbations.

Black holes in quartic-order beyond-generalized Proca theories

The generalized Proca theories with second-order equations of motion can be healthily extended to a more general framework in which the number of propagating degrees of freedom remains unchanged. In the presence of a quartic-order nonminimal coupling to gravity arising in beyond-generalized Proca theories, the speed of gravitational waves $c_t$ on the Friedmann-Lemaitre-Robertson-Walker (FLRW) cosmological background can be equal to that of light $c$ under a certain condition. By using this condition alone, we show that the speed of gravitational waves in the vicinity of static and spherically symmetric black holes is also equivalent to $c$ for the propagation of odd-parity perturbations along both radial and angular directions. As a by-product, the black holes arising in our beyond-generalized Proca theories are plagued by neither ghost nor Laplacian instabilities against odd-parity perturbations. We show the existence of both exact and numerical black hole solutions endowed with vector hairs induced by the quartic-order coupling.

Dark energy scenario consistent with GW170817 in theories beyond Horndeski gravity

The Gleyzes-Langlois-Piazza-Vernizzi (GLPV) theories up to quartic order are the general scheme of scalar-tensor theories allowing the possibility for realizing the tensor propagation speed $c_t$ equivalent to 1 on the isotropic cosmological background. We propose a dark energy model in which the late-time cosmic acceleration occurs by a simple k-essence Lagrangian analogous to the ghost condensate with cubic and quartic Galileons in the framework of GLPV theories. We show that a wide variety of the variation of the dark energy equation of state $w_{\rm DE}$ including the entry to the region $w_{\rm DE}<-1$ can be realized without violating conditions for the absence of ghosts and Laplacian instabilities. The approach to the tracker equation of state $w_{\rm DE}=-2$ during the matter era, which is disfavored by observational data, can be avoided by the existence of a quadratic k-essence Lagrangian $X^2$. We study the evolution of nonrelativistic matter perturbations for the model $c_t^2=1$ and show that the two quantities $μ$ and $Σ$, which are related to the Newtonian and weak lensing gravitational potentials respectively, are practically equivalent to each other, such that $μ\simeq Σ>1$. For the case in which the deviation of $w_{\rm DE}$ from $-1$ is significant at a later cosmological epoch, the values of $μ$ and $Σ$ tend to be larger at low redshifts. We also find that our dark energy model can be consistent with the bounds on the deviation parameter $α_{\rm H}$ from Horndeski theories arising from the modification of gravitational law inside massive objects.

Relativistic stars in vector-tensor theories

We study relativistic star solutions in second-order generalized Proca theories characterized by a $U(1)$-breaking vector field with derivative couplings. In the models with cubic and quartic derivative coupling, the mass and radius of stars become larger than those in general relativity for negative derivative coupling constants. This phenomenon is mostly attributed to the increase of star radius induced by a slower decrease of the matter pressure compared to general relativity. There is a tendency that the relativistic star with a smaller mass is not gravitationally bound for a low central density and hence dynamically unstable, but that with a larger mass is gravitationally bound. On the other hand, we show that the intrinsic vector-mode couplings give rise to general relativistic solutions with a trivial field profile, so the mass and radius are not modified from those in general relativity.

Hairy black hole solutions in $U(1)$ gauge-invariant scalar-vector-tensor theories

In $U(1)$ gauge-invariant scalar-vector-tensor theories with second-order equations of motion, we study the properties of black holes (BH) on a static and spherically symmetric background. In shift-symmetric theories invariant under the shift of scalar $ϕ\to ϕ+c$, we show the existence of new hairy BH solutions where a cubic-order scalar-vector interaction gives rise to a scalar hair manifesting itself around the event horizon. In the presence of a quartic-order interaction besides the cubic coupling, there are also regular BH solutions endowed with scalar and vector hairs.

Black hole perturbations in vector-tensor theories: The odd-mode analysis

In generalized Proca theories with vector-field derivative couplings, a bunch of hairy black hole solutions have been derived on a static and spherically symmetric background. In this paper, we formulate the odd-parity black hole perturbations in generalized Proca theories by expanding the corresponding action up to second order and investigate whether or not black holes with vector hair suffer ghost or Laplacian instabilities. We show that the models with cubic couplings $G_3(X)$, where $X=-A_μA^μ/2$ with a vector field $A_μ$, do not provide any additional stability condition as in General Relativity. On the other hand, the exact charged stealth Schwarzschild solution with a nonvanishing longitudinal vector component $A_1$, which originates from the coupling to the Einstein tensor $G^{μν}A_μA_ν$ equivalent to the quartic coupling $G_4(X)$ containing a linear function of $X$, is unstable in the vicinity of the event horizon. The same instability problem also persists for hairy black holes arising from general quartic power-law couplings $G_4(X) \supset β_4 X^n$ with the nonvanishing $A_1$, while the other branch with $A_1=0$ can be consistent with conditions for the absence of ghost and Laplacian instabilities. We also discuss the case of other exact and numerical black hole solutions associated with intrinsic vector-field derivative couplings and show that there exists a wide range of parameter spaces in which the solutions suffer neither ghost nor Laplacian instabilities against odd-parity perturbations.
