Fractional Quantum Hall Effect via Holography: Chern-Simons, Edge States, and Hierarchy

We present three holographic constructions of fractional quantum Hall effect (FQHE) via string theory. The first model studies edge states in FQHE using supersymmetric domain walls in N=6 Chern-Simons theory. We show that D4-branes wrapped on CP^1 or D8-branes wrapped on CP^3 create edge states that shift the rank or the level of the gauge group, respectively. These holographic edge states correctly reproduce the Hall conductivity. The second model presents a holographic dual to the pure U(N)_k (Yang-Mills-)Chern-Simons theory based on a D3-D7 system. Its holography is equivalent to the level-rank duality, which enables us to compute the Hall conductivity and the topological entanglement entropy. The third model introduces the first string theory embedding of hierarchical FQHEs, using IIA string on C^2/Z_n.

The quantum valley Hall effect in proximity-induced superconducting graphene: an experimental window for deconfined quantum criticality

We argue that by inducing superconductivity in graphene via the proximity effect, it is possible to observes the "quantum valley Hall effect". In the presence of magnetic field, supercurrent causes "valley pseudospin" to accumulate at the edges of the superconducting strip. This, and the structure of the superconducting vortex core, provide possibilities to experimentally observe aspects of the "deconfined quantum criticality".

Lattice model of three-dimensional topological singlet superconductor with time-reversal symmetry

We study topological phases of time-reversal invariant singlet superconductors in three spatial dimensions. In these particle-hole symmetric systems the topological phases are characterized by an even-numbered winding number $ν$. At a two-dimensional (2D) surface the topological properties of this quantum state manifest themselves through the presence of $ν$ flavors of gapless Dirac fermion surface states, which are robust against localization from random impurities. We construct a tight-binding model on the diamond lattice that realizes a topologically nontrivial phase, in which the winding number takes the value $ν=\pm 2$. Disorder corresponds to a (non-localizing) random SU(2) gauge potential for the surface Dirac fermions, leading to a power-law density of states $ρ(ε) \sim ε^{1/7}$. The bulk effective field theory is proposed to be the (3+1) dimensional SU(2) Yang-Mills theory with a theta-term at $θ=π$.

Termination of typical wavefunction multifractal spectra at the Anderson metal-insulator transition: Field theory description using the functional renormalization group

We revisit the problem of wavefunction statistics at the Anderson metal-insulator transition (MIT) of non-interacting electrons in d > 2 spatial dimensions. At the transition, the complex spatial structure of the critical wavefunctions is reflected in the non-linear behavior of the multifractal spectrum of generalized inverse participation ratios (IPRs). Beyond the crossover from narrow to broad IPR statistics, which always occurs for sufficiently large moments of the wavefunction amplitude, the spectrum obtained from a typical wavefunction associated with a particular disorder realization differs markedly from that obtained from the disorder-averaged IPRs. This phenomenon is known as the termination of the multifractal spectrum. We provide a field theoretical derivation for the termination of the typical multifractal spectrum, by combining the non-linear sigma model framework, conventionally used to access the MIT in d = 2 + epsilon dimensions, with a functional renormalization group (FRG) technique. The FRG method deployed here was originally pioneered to study the properties of the two-dimensional (2D) random phase XY model [D. Carpentier and P. Le Doussal, Nucl. Phys. B 588, 565 (2000)]. The same method was used to demonstrate the termination of the multifractal spectrum in the very special problem of 2D Dirac fermions subject to a random Abelian vector potential. Our result shows that the typical multifractal wavefunction spectrum and its termination can be obtained at a generic Anderson localization transition in d > 2, within the standard field theoretical framework of the non-linear sigma model, when combined with the FRG.

Disordered Systems and the Replica Method in AdS/CFT

We formulate a holographic description of effects of disorder in conformal field theories based on the replica method and the AdS/CFT correspondence. Starting with $n$ copies of conformal field theories, randomness with a gaussian distribution is described by a deformation of double trace operators. After computing physical quantities, we take the $n \to 0$ limit at the final step. We compute correlation functions in the disordered systems by using the holographic replica method as well as the formulation in the conformal field theory. We find examples where disorder changes drastically the scaling of two point functions. The renormalization group flow of the effective central charge in our disordered systems is also discussed.

A family of super Schrodinger invariant Chern-Simons matter systems

We investigate non-relativistic limits of the N=3 Chern-Simons matter system in 1+2 dimensions. The relativistic theory can generate several inequivalent super Schodinger invariant theories, depending on the degrees of freedom we choose to retain in the non-relativistic limit. The maximally supersymmetric Schrodinger invariant theory is obtained by keeping all particle degrees of freedom. The other descendants, where particles and anti-particles coexist, are also Schrodinger invariant but preserve less supersymmetries. Thus, we have a family of super Schrodinger invariant field theories produced from the parent relativistic theory.

Boundary criticality at the Anderson transition between a metal and a quantum spin Hall insulator in two dimensions

Static disorder in a noninteracting gas of electrons confined to two dimensions can drive a continuous quantum (Anderson) transition between a metallic and an insulating state when time-reversal symmetry is preserved but spin-rotation symmetry is broken. The critical exponent $ν$ that characterizes the diverging localization length and the bulk multifractal scaling exponents that characterize the amplitudes of the critical wave functions at the metal-insulator transition do not depend on the topological nature of the insulating state, i.e., whether it is topologically trivial (ordinary insulator) or nontrivial (a $Z_2$ insulator supporting a quantum spin Hall effect). This is not true of the boundary multifractal scaling exponents which we show (numerically) to depend on whether the insulating state is topologically trivial or not.

Quantum Hall Effect of Massless Dirac Fermions in a Vanishing Magnetic Field

The effect of strong long-range disorder on the quantization of the Hall conductivity $σ_{xy}$ in graphene is studied numerically. It is shown that increasing Landau-level mixing progressively destroys all plateaus in $σ_{xy}$ except the plateaus at $σ_{xy}=\mp e^2/2h$ (per valley and per spin). The critical state at the charge-neutral Dirac point is robust to strong disorder and belongs to the universality class of the conventional plateau transitions in the integer quantum Hall effect. We propose that the breaking of time-reversal symmetry by ripples in graphene can realize this quantum critical point in a vanishing magnetic field.

Many-body generalization of the Z2 topological invariant for the quantum spin Hall effect

We propose a many-body generalization of the Z2 topological invariant for the quantum spin Hall insulator, which does not rely on single-particle band structures. The invariant is derived as a topological obstruction that distinguishes topologically distinct many-body ground states on a torus. It is also expressed as a Wilson-loop of the SU(2) Berry gauge field, which is quantized due to the time-reversal symmetry.

Z2 topological term, the global anomaly, and the two-dimensional symplectic symmetry class of Anderson localization

We discuss, for a two-dimensional Dirac Hamiltonian with random scalar potential, the presence of a $Z_2$ topological term in the non-linear sigma model encoding the physics of Anderson localization in the symplectic symmetry class. The $Z_2$ topological term realizes the sign of the Pfaffian of a family of Dirac operators. We compute the corresponding global anomaly, i.e., the change in the sign of the Pfaffian by studying a spectral flow numerically. This $Z_2$ topological effect can be relevant to graphene when the impurity potential is long-ranged and, also, to the two-dimensional boundaries of a three-dimensional lattice model of $Z_2$ topological insulators in the symplectic symmetry class.

Topological delocalization of two-dimensional massless Dirac fermions

The beta function of a two-dimensional massless Dirac Hamiltonian subject to a random scalar potential, which e.g., underlies the theoretical description of graphene, is computed numerically. Although it belongs to, from a symmetry standpoint, the two-dimensional symplectic class, the beta function monotonically increases with decreasing $g$. We also provide an argument based on the spectral flows under twisting boundary conditions, which shows that none of states of the massless Dirac Hamiltonian can be localized.

Two-dimensional spin-filtered chiral network model for the Z_2 quantum spin-Hall effect

The effects of static disorder on the Z_2 quantum spin-Hall effect for non-interacting electrons propagating in two-dimensional space is studied numerically. A two-dimensional time-reversal symmetric network model is constructed to account for the effects of static disorder on the propagation of non-interacting electrons subjected to spin-orbit couplings. This network model is different from past network models belonging to the symplectic symmetry class in that the propagating modes along the links of the network can be arranged into an odd number of Kramers doublet. It is found that (1) a two-dimensional metallic phase of finite extent is embedded in a Z_2 insulating phase in parameter space and (2) the quantum phase transitions between the metallic and Z_2 insulating phases belong to the conventional symplectic universality class in two space dimensions.

Particle-Hole Symmetry and the $ν={5/2}$ Quantum Hall State

We discuss the implications of approximate particle-hole symmetry in a half-filled Landau level in which a paired quantum Hall state forms. We note that the Pfaffian state is not particle-hole symmetric. Therefore, in the limit of vanishing Landau level mixing, in which particle-hole transformation is an exact symmetry, the Pfaffian spontaneously breaks this symmetry. There is a particle-hole conjugate state, which we call the anti-Pfaffian, which is degenerate with the Pfaffian in this limit. We observe that strong Landau level mixing should favor the Pfaffian, but it is an open problem which state is favored for the moderate Landau level mixing which is present in experiments. We discuss the bulk and edge physics of the anti-Pfaffian. We analyze a simplified model in which transitions between analogs of the two states can be studied in detail. Finally, we discuss experimental implications.

Aspects of Holographic Entanglement Entropy

This is an extended version of our short report hep-th/0603001, where a holographic interpretation of entanglement entropy in conformal field theories is proposed from AdS/CFT correspondence. In addition to a concise review of relevant recent progresses of entanglement entropy and details omitted in the earlier letter, this paper includes the following several new results : We give a more direct derivation of our claim which relates the entanglement entropy with the minimal area surfaces in the AdS_3/CFT_2 case as well as some further discussions on higher dimensional cases. Also the relation between the entanglement entropy and central charges in 4D conformal field theories is examined. We check that the logarithmic part of the 4D entanglement entropy computed in the CFT side agrees with the AdS_5 result at least under a specific condition. Finally we estimate the entanglement entropy of massive theories in generic dimensions by making use of our proposal.

Holographic Derivation of Entanglement Entropy from AdS/CFT

A holographic derivation of the entanglement entropy in quantum (conformal) field theories is proposed from AdS/CFT correspondence. We argue that the entanglement entropy in d+1 dimensional conformal field theories can be obtained from the area of d dimensional minimal surfaces in AdS_{d+2}, analogous to the Bekenstein-Hawking formula for black hole entropy. We show that our proposal perfectly reproduces the correct entanglement entropy in 2D CFT when applied to AdS_3. We also compare the entropy computed in AdS_5 \times S^5 with that of the free N=4 super Yang-Mills.

Zero-energy edge states and chiral symmetry breaking at edges of graphite sheets

Two-dimensional graphite sheets with a certain type of edges are known to support boundary states localized near the edges. Forming a flat band with a sharp peak in the density of states at the Fermi energy, they can trigger a magnetic instability or a distortion of the lattice in the presence of electron-electron or electron-phonon interactions. We shall discuss a relationship between chiral symmetry, which is the origin of the zero-energy edge states, and several types of induced orders such as spin density waves or lattice distortions. We also investigate electron correlation effects on the edge states for a wrapped quasi one-dimensional geometry, i.e., carbon nanotube, by means of the renormalization group and the open boundary bosonization.

Density of states of disordered Dirac particles: Infinitely many operators with negative scaling dimensions and freezing transitions

The global density of states (GDOS) close to the band center $ε=0$ for a particle hopping on a square lattice and subjected to disorder that preserves the bipartite symmetry of the lattice is computed using field theoretical methods. The GDOS diverges like $ |ε|^{-1}\exp (-c|\lnε|^κ ) $ with $κ=2/3$ in agreement with a prediction by Motrunich \textit{et al.} and in disagreement with an older prediction by Gade ($κ=1/2$).

Correlation effects of carbon nanotubes at boundaries: Spin polarization induced by zero-energy boundary states

When a carbon nanotube is truncated with a certain type of edges, boundary states localized near the edges appear at the fermi level. Starting from lattice models, low energy effective theories are constructed which describe electron correlation effects on the boundary states. We then focus on a thin metallic carbon nanotube which supports one or two boundary states, and discuss physical consequences of the interaction between the boundary states and bulk collective excitations. By the renormalization group analyses together with the open boundary bosonization, we show that the repulsive bulk interactions suppress the charge fluctuations at boundaries, and assist the spin polarization.
