Efficient Quantum Circuit Construction of Controlled Time-Evolution for Arbitrary Pauli-Sum Hamiltonians

Controlled time-evolution circuits select forward or backward Hamiltonian time evolution according to the state of an ancilla qubit. They are fundamental building blocks in quantum eigenvalue transformation of unitaries, Hamiltonian filtering, and related quantum algorithms. A direct realization adds ancilla control to the elementary gates of the time-evolution circuit and therefore increases the two-qubit gate count, compiled T depth and CX depth. We develop an efficient recursive algorithm that, for an arbitrary Pauli-sum Hamiltonian, partitions the input Pauli terms into groups and assigns to each group a sign-flip Pauli string that anti-commutes with the in-group terms, thereby removing ancilla control from the grouped time-evolution blocks. Numerical benchmarks on random Hamiltonians and structured spin Hamiltonians show reductions in compiled T depth and compiled CX depth. For a Kagome Hamiltonian with 24 spins under full connectivity, the proposed construction reduces the compiled T depth by 85.2% and the compiled CX depth by 68.9%, compared with a conventional implementation that decomposes the Hamiltonian into individual Pauli terms and implements the controlled time evolution of each term by directly adding the ancilla qubit to the corresponding Pauli-rotation circuit.

Grover Adaptive Search for the Higher-Order Formulation of Quadratic Assignment Problems

We demonstrate that the search space of the quadratic assignment problem (QAP), known as an NP-hard combinatorial optimization problem, can be reduced using Grover adaptive search (GAS) with permutation preparation operator (PPO). To that end, we first revise the traditional quadratic unconstrained binary optimization (QUBO) formulation of the QAP into a higher-order unconstrained binary optimization (HUBO) formulation, introducing a binary encoding method. Algebraic analyses in terms of the number of qubits, quantum gates, circuit depth, and query complexity are performed, which indicate that our proposed approach significantly reduces the search space size, improving convergence performance to the optimal solution compared to the conventional one. Furthermore, although the PPO for HUBO has a greater circuit depth than the PPO for QUBO, when the analysis is extended to the entire state preparation operator, both HUBO and QUBO exhibit comparable depths. Therefore, owing to its smaller number of variables, HUBO can be concluded to be more effective.

Grover Adaptive Search with Spin Variables

This paper presents a novel approach to Grover adaptive search (GAS) for a combinatorial optimization problem whose objective function involves spin variables. While the GAS algorithm with a conventional design of a quantum dictionary subroutine handles a problem associated with an objective function with binary variables $\{0,1\}$, we reformulate the problem using spin variables $\{+1,-1\}$ to simplify the algorithm. Specifically, we introduce a novel quantum dictionary subroutine that is designed for this spin-based formulation. A key benefit of this approach is the substantial reduction in the number of CNOT gates required to construct the quantum circuit. We theoretically demonstrate that, for certain problems, our proposed approach can reduce the gate complexity from an exponential order to a polynomial order, compared to the conventional binary-based approach. This improvement has the potential to enhance the scalability and efficiency of GAS, particularly in larger quantum computations.

Quantum Speedup for Polar Maximum Likelihood Decoding

Conventional decoding algorithms for polar codes strive to balance achievable performance and computational complexity in classical computing. While maximum likelihood (ML) decoding guarantees optimal performance, its NP-hard nature makes it impractical for real-world systems. In this letter, we propose a novel ML decoding architecture for polar codes based on the Grover adaptive search, a quantum exhaustive search algorithm. Unlike conventional studies, our approach, enabled by a newly formulated objective function, uniquely supports Gray-coded multi-level modulation without expanding the search space size compared to the classical ML decoding. Simulation results demonstrate that our proposed quantum decoding achieves ML performance while providing a pure quadratic speedup in query complexity.
