Multi-Play Combinatorial Semi-Bandit Problem

In the combinatorial semi-bandit (CSB) problem, a player selects an action from a combinatorial action set and observes feedback from the base arms included in the action. While CSB is widely applicable to combinatorial optimization problems, its restriction to binary decision spaces excludes important cases involving non-negative integer flows or allocations, such as the optimal transport and knapsack problems. To overcome this limitation, we propose the multi-play combinatorial semi-bandit (MP-CSB), where a player can select a non-negative integer action and observe multiple feedbacks from a single arm in each round. We propose two algorithms for the MP-CSB. One is a Thompson-sampling-based algorithm that is computationally feasible even when the action space is exponentially large with respect to the number of arms, and attains $O(\log T)$ distribution-dependent regret in the stochastic regime, where $T$ is the time horizon. The other is a best-of-both-worlds algorithm, which achieves $O(\log T)$ variance-dependent regret in the stochastic regime and the worst-case $\tilde{\mathcal{O}}\left( \sqrt{T} \right)$ regret in the adversarial regime. Moreover, its regret in adversarial one is data-dependent, adapting to the cumulative loss of the optimal action, the total quadratic variation, and the path-length of the loss sequence. Finally, we numerically show that the proposed algorithms outperform existing methods in the CSB literature.

A Fast Algorithm for the Real-Valued Combinatorial Pure Exploration of Multi-Armed Bandit

We study the real-valued combinatorial pure exploration problem in the stochastic multi-armed bandit (R-CPE-MAB). We study the case where the size of the action set is polynomial with respect to the number of arms. In such a case, the R-CPE-MAB can be seen as a special case of the so-called transductive linear bandits. We introduce an algorithm named the combinatorial gap-based exploration (CombGapE) algorithm, whose sample complexity upper bound matches the lower bound up to a problem-dependent constant factor. We numerically show that the CombGapE algorithm outperforms existing methods significantly in both synthetic and real-world datasets.

Magnetic Anisotropies and Skyrmion Lattice Related to Magnetic Quadrupole Interactions of the RKKY Mechanism in Frustrated Spin-Trimer System Gd$_{3}$Ru$_{4}$Al$_{12}$ with a Breathing Kagome Structure

The origin of the magnetic quadrupole (MQ) interactions in Gd$_{3}$Ru$_{4}$Al$_{12}$ which is known as a frustrated spin system and as a host material of skyrmion with a sentrosymmetric crystal structure are discussed. The MQ interactions between ferromagnetic (FM) spin trimers with imperfect FM directivity are deduced from synthesis of dipole Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida (RKKY) interactions. The Hamiltonian which includes both the MQ interactions and dipole interactions is proposed, and magnetic anisotropies, magnetic phase transitions and contribution of the MQ interactions to stabilize the skyrmion lattice (SkL) are discussed based on this Hamiltonian. Degrees of MQ freedom carried by the trimers contribute to stabilizing SkL which appears at finite temperatures.

Thompson Sampling for Real-Valued Combinatorial Pure Exploration of Multi-Armed Bandit

We study the real-valued combinatorial pure exploration of the multi-armed bandit (R-CPE-MAB) problem. In R-CPE-MAB, a player is given $d$ stochastic arms, and the reward of each arm $s\in\{1, \ldots, d\}$ follows an unknown distribution with mean $μ_s$. In each time step, a player pulls a single arm and observes its reward. The player's goal is to identify the optimal \emph{action} $\boldsymbolπ^{*} = \argmax_{\boldsymbolπ \in \mathcal{A}} \boldsymbolμ^{\top}\boldsymbolπ$ from a finite-sized real-valued \emph{action set} $\mathcal{A}\subset \mathbb{R}^{d}$ with as few arm pulls as possible. Previous methods in the R-CPE-MAB assume that the size of the action set $\mathcal{A}$ is polynomial in $d$. We introduce an algorithm named the Generalized Thompson Sampling Explore (GenTS-Explore) algorithm, which is the first algorithm that can work even when the size of the action set is exponentially large in $d$. We also introduce a novel problem-dependent sample complexity lower bound of the R-CPE-MAB problem, and show that the GenTS-Explore algorithm achieves the optimal sample complexity up to a problem-dependent constant factor.

Fixed-Budget Real-Valued Combinatorial Pure Exploration of Multi-Armed Bandit

We study the real-valued combinatorial pure exploration of the multi-armed bandit in the fixed-budget setting. We first introduce the Combinatorial Successive Asign (CSA) algorithm, which is the first algorithm that can identify the best action even when the size of the action class is exponentially large with respect to the number of arms. We show that the upper bound of the probability of error of the CSA algorithm matches a lower bound up to a logarithmic factor in the exponent. Then, we introduce another algorithm named the Minimax Combinatorial Successive Accepts and Rejects (Minimax-CombSAR) algorithm for the case where the size of the action class is polynomial, and show that it is optimal, which matches a lower bound. Finally, we experimentally compare the algorithms with previous methods and show that our algorithm performs better.

Robust computation of optimal transport by $β$-potential regularization

Optimal transport (OT) has become a widely used tool in the machine learning field to measure the discrepancy between probability distributions. For instance, OT is a popular loss function that quantifies the discrepancy between an empirical distribution and a parametric model. Recently, an entropic penalty term and the celebrated Sinkhorn algorithm have been commonly used to approximate the original OT in a computationally efficient way. However, since the Sinkhorn algorithm runs a projection associated with the Kullback-Leibler divergence, it is often vulnerable to outliers. To overcome this problem, we propose regularizing OT with the β-potential term associated with the so-called $β$-divergence, which was developed in robust statistics. Our theoretical analysis reveals that the $β$-potential can prevent the mass from being transported to outliers. We experimentally demonstrate that the transport matrix computed with our algorithm helps estimate a probability distribution robustly even in the presence of outliers. In addition, our proposed method can successfully detect outliers from a contaminated dataset

Suppressed cosmic growth in coupled vector-tensor theories

We study a coupled dark energy scenario in which a massive vector field $A_μ$ with broken $U(1)$ gauge symmetry interacts with the four-velocity $u_c^μ$ of cold dark matter (CDM) through the scalar product $Z=-u_c^μ A_μ$. This new coupling corresponds to the momentum transfer, so that the background vector and CDM continuity equations do not have explicit interacting terms analogous to the energy exchange. Hence the observational preference of uncoupled generalized Proca theories over the $Λ$CDM model can be still maintained at the background level. Meanwhile, the same coupling strongly affects the evolution of cosmological perturbations. While the effective sound speed of CDM vanishes, the propagation speed and no-ghost condition of a longitudinal scalar of $A_μ$ and the CDM no-ghost condition are subject to nontrivial modifications by the $Z$ dependence in the Lagrangian. We propose a concrete dark energy model and show that the gravitational interaction on scales relevant to the linear growth of large-scale structures can be smaller than the Newton constant at low redshifts. This leads to the suppression of growth rates of both CDM and total matter density perturbations, so our model allows an interesting possibility for reducing the tension of matter density contrast $σ_8$ between high- and low-redshift measurements.

Quadrupolar Susceptibility and Magnetic Phase Diagram of PrNi$_2$Cd$_{20}$ with Non-Kramers Doublet Ground State

In this study, ultrasonic measurements were performed on a single crystal of cubic PrNi$_2$Cd$_{20}$, down to a temperature of 0.02 K, to investigate the crystalline electric field ground state and search for possible phase transitions at low temperatures. The elastic constant $(C_{11}-C_{12})/2$, which is related to the $Γ_3$-symmetry quadrupolar response, exhibits the Curie-type softening at temperatures below $\sim$30 K, which indicates that the present system has a $Γ_3$ non-Kramers doublet ground state. A leveling-off of the elastic response appears below $\sim$0.1 K toward the lowest temperatures, which implies the presence of level splitting owing to a long-range order in a finite-volume fraction associated with $Γ_3$-symmetry multipoles. A magnetic field-temperature phase diagram of the present compound is constructed up to 28 T for $H \parallel$ [110]. A clear acoustic de Haas-van Alphen signal and a possible magnetic-field-induced phase transition at $H \sim$26 T are also detected by high-magnetic-field measurements.

Coupled vector dark energy

We provide a general framework for studying the evolution of background and cosmological perturbations in the presence of a vector field $A_μ$ coupled to cold dark matter (CDM). We consider an interacting Lagrangian of the form $Q f(X) T_c$, where $Q$ is a coupling constant, $f$ is an arbitrary function of $X=-A_μA^μ/2$, and $T_c$ is a trace of the CDM energy-momentum tensor. The matter coupling affects the no-ghost condition and sound speed of linear scalar perturbations deep inside the sound horizon, while those of tensor and vector perturbations are not subject to modifications. The existence of interactions also modifies the no-ghost condition of CDM density perturbations. We propose a concrete model of coupled vector dark energy with the tensor propagation speed equivalent to that of light. In comparison to the $Q=0$ case, we show that the decay of CDM to the vector field leads to the phantom dark energy equation of state $w_{\rm DE}$ closer to $-1$. This alleviates the problem of observational incompatibility of uncoupled models in which $w_{\rm DE}$ significantly deviates from $-1$. The maximum values of $w_{\rm DE}$ reached during the matter era are bounded from the CDM no-ghost condition of future de Sitter solutions.

Constraints on massive vector dark energy models from integrated Sachs-Wolfe-galaxy cross-correlations

The gravitational-wave event GW170817, together with the electromagnetic counterpart, shows that the speed of tensor perturbations $c_T$ on the cosmological background is very close to that of light $c$ for the redshift $z<0.009$. In generalized Proca theories, the Lagrangians compatible with the condition $c_T=c$ are constrained to be derivative interactions up to cubic order, besides those corresponding to intrinsic vector modes. We place observational constraints on a dark energy model in cubic-order generalized Proca theories with intrinsic vector modes by running the Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) code. We use the cross-correlation data of the integrated Sachs-Wolfe (ISW) signal and galaxy distributions in addition to the data sets of cosmic microwave background, baryon acoustic oscillations, type Ia supernovae, local measurements of the Hubble expansion rate, and redshift-space distortions. We show that, unlike cubic-order scalar-tensor theories, the existence of intrinsic vector modes allows the possibility for evading the ISW-galaxy anticorrelation incompatible with the current observational data. As a result, we find that the dark energy model in cubic-order generalized Proca theories exhibits a better fit to the data than the cosmological constant, even by including the ISW-galaxy correlation data in the MCMC analysis.

Helical Ordering of Spin Trimers in a Distorted Kagome Lattice of Gd$_3$Ru$_4$Al$_{12}$ Studied by Resonant X-ray Diffraction

Successive magnetic phase transitions at $T_1$=17.5 K and $T_2$=18.5 K in Gd$_3$Ru$_4$Al$_{12}$, with a distorted kagome lattice of Gd ions, is studied using resonant X-ray diffraction with polarization analysis. It has been suggested that in this compound the $S=7/2$ spins on the nearest-neighbor Gd-triangle form a ferromagnetic trimer and the Gd lattice can be effectively considered as an antiferromagnetic triangular lattice of $S=21/2$ spin trimers [S. Nakamura et al., Phys. Rev. B 98, 054410 (2018)]. We show that the magnetic order in this system is described by an incommensurate wave vector $q$~(0.27, 0, 0), which varies slightly with temperature. In the low temperature phase below $T_1$, the experimental results are well explained by considering that the spin trimers form a helical order with both the $c$-axis and $c$-plane components. In the intermediate phase above $T_1$, the $c$-axis component vanishes, resulting in a sinusoical structure within the $c$-plane. The sinusoidal-helical transition at $T_1$ can be regarded as an ordering of chiral degree of freedom, which is degenerate in the intermediate phase.

Suppression of matter couplings with a vector field in generalized Proca theories

We derive the profile of a vector field coupled to matter on a static and spherically symmetric background in the context of generalized Proca theories. The cubic Galileon self-interaction leads to the suppression of a longitudinal vector component due to the operation of the Vainshtein mechanism. For quartic and sixth-order derivative interactions, the solutions consistent with those in the continuous limit of small derivative couplings correspond to the branch with the vanishing longitudinal mode. We compute the corrections to gravitational potentials outside a compact body induced by the vector field in the presence of cubic, quartic, and sixth-order derivative couplings, and show that the models can be consistent with local gravity constraints under mild bounds on the temporal vector component. The quintic Galileon interaction does not allow regular solutions of the longitudinal mode for a rapidly decreasing matter density outside the body.

Cosmology in beyond-generalized Proca theories

The beyond-generalized Proca theories are the extension of second-order massive vector-tensor theories (dubbed generalized Proca theories) with two transverse vector modes and one longitudinal scalar besides two tensor polarizations. Even with this extension, the propagating degrees of freedom remain unchanged on the isotropic cosmological background without an Ostrogradski instability. We study the cosmology in beyond-generalized Proca theories by paying particular attention to the dynamics of late-time cosmic acceleration and resulting observational consequences. We derive conditions for avoiding ghosts and instabilities of tensor, vector, and scalar perturbations and discuss viable parameter spaces in concrete models allowing the dark energy equation of state smaller than $-1$. The propagation speeds of those perturbations are subject to modifications beyond the domain of generalized Proca theories. There is a mixing between scalar and matter sound speeds, but such a mixing is suppressed during most of the cosmic expansion history without causing a new instability. On the other hand, we find that derivative interactions arising in beyond-generalized Proca theories give rise to important modifications to the cosmic growth history. The growth rate of matter perturbations can be compatible with the redshift-space distortion data due to the realization of gravitational interaction weaker than that in generalized Proca theories. Thus, it is possible to distinguish the dark energy model in beyond-generalized Proca theories from the counterpart in generalized Proca theories as well as from the $Λ$CDM model.

Elastic Properties and Magnetic Phase Diagrams of Dense Kondo Compound Ce0.75La0.25B6

We have investigated the elastic properties of the cubic dense Kondo compound Ce0.75La0.25B6 by means of ultrasonic measurements. We have obtained magnetic fields vs temperatures (H-T) phase diagrams under magnetic fields along the crystallographic [001], [110] and [111] axes. An ordered phase IV showing the elastic softening of c44 locates in low temperature region between 1.6 and 1.1 K below 0.7 T in all field directions. The phase IV shows an isotropic nature with regard to the field directions, while the antiferro-magnetic phase III shows an anisotropic character. A remarkable softening of c44 and a spontaneous trigonal distortion εyz+εzx+εxy recently reported by Akatsu et al. [J. Phys. Soc. Jpn. 72 (2003) 205] in the phase IV favor a ferro-quadrupole (FQ) moment of Oyz+Ozx+Oxy induced by an octupole ordering.
