SPAC: Sampling-based Progressive Attribute Compression for Dense Point Clouds

We propose an end-to-end attribute compression method for dense point clouds. The proposed method combines a frequency sampling module, an adaptive scale feature extraction module with geometry assistance, and a global hyperprior entropy model. The frequency sampling module uses a Hamming window and the Fast Fourier Transform to extract high-frequency components of the point cloud. The difference between the original point cloud and the sampled point cloud is divided into multiple sub-point clouds. These sub-point clouds are then partitioned using an octree, providing a structured input for feature extraction. The feature extraction module integrates adaptive convolutional layers and uses offset-attention to capture both local and global features. Then, a geometry-assisted attribute feature refinement module is used to refine the extracted attribute features. Finally, a global hyperprior model is introduced for entropy encoding. This model propagates hyperprior parameters from the deepest (base) layer to the other layers, further enhancing the encoding efficiency. At the decoder, a mirrored network is used to progressively restore features and reconstruct the color attribute through transposed convolutional layers. The proposed method encodes base layer information at a low bitrate and progressively adds enhancement layer information to improve reconstruction accuracy. Compared to the latest G-PCC test model (TMC13v23) under the MPEG common test conditions (CTCs), the proposed method achieved an average Bjontegaard delta bitrate reduction of 24.58% for the Y component (21.23% for YUV combined) on the MPEG Category Solid dataset and 22.48% for the Y component (17.19% for YUV combined) on the MPEG Category Dense dataset. This is the first instance of a learning-based codec outperforming the G-PCC standard on these datasets under the MPEG CTCs.

Anatomizing Deep Learning Inference in Web Browsers

Web applications have increasingly adopted Deep Learning (DL) through in-browser inference, wherein DL inference performs directly within Web browsers. The actual performance of in-browser inference and its impacts on the quality of experience (QoE) remain unexplored, and urgently require new QoE measurements beyond traditional ones, e.g., mainly focusing on page load time. To bridge this gap, we make the first comprehensive performance measurement of in-browser inference to date. Our approach proposes new metrics to measure in-browser inference: responsiveness, smoothness, and inference accuracy. Our extensive analysis involves 9 representative DL models across Web browsers of 50 popular PC devices and 20 mobile devices. The results reveal that in-browser inference exhibits a substantial latency gap, averaging 16.9 times slower on CPU and 4.9 times slower on GPU compared to native inference on PC devices. The gap on mobile CPU and mobile GPU is 15.8 times and 7.8 times, respectively. Furthermore, we identify contributing factors to such latency gap, including underutilized hardware instruction sets, inherent overhead in the runtime environment, resource contention within the browser, and inefficiencies in software libraries and GPU abstractions. Additionally, in-browser inference imposes significant memory demands, at times exceeding 334.6 times the size of the DL models themselves, partly attributable to suboptimal memory management. We also observe that in-browser inference leads to a significant 67.2% increase in the time it takes for GUI components to render within Web browsers, significantly affecting the overall user QoE of Web applications reliant on this technology

Global Spatial-Temporal Information-based Residual ConvLSTM for Video Space-Time Super-Resolution

By converting low-frame-rate, low-resolution videos into high-frame-rate, high-resolution ones, space-time video super-resolution techniques can enhance visual experiences and facilitate more efficient information dissemination. We propose a convolutional neural network (CNN) for space-time video super-resolution, namely GIRNet. To generate highly accurate features and thus improve performance, the proposed network integrates a feature-level temporal interpolation module with deformable convolutions and a global spatial-temporal information-based residual convolutional long short-term memory (convLSTM) module. In the feature-level temporal interpolation module, we leverage deformable convolution, which adapts to deformations and scale variations of objects across different scene locations. This presents a more efficient solution than conventional convolution for extracting features from moving objects. Our network effectively uses forward and backward feature information to determine inter-frame offsets, leading to the direct generation of interpolated frame features. In the global spatial-temporal information-based residual convLSTM module, the first convLSTM is used to derive global spatial-temporal information from the input features, and the second convLSTM uses the previously computed global spatial-temporal information feature as its initial cell state. This second convLSTM adopts residual connections to preserve spatial information, thereby enhancing the output features. Experiments on the Vimeo90K dataset show that the proposed method outperforms state-of-the-art techniques in peak signal-to-noise-ratio (by 1.45 dB, 1.14 dB, and 0.02 dB over STARnet, TMNet, and 3DAttGAN, respectively), structural similarity index(by 0.027, 0.023, and 0.006 over STARnet, TMNet, and 3DAttGAN, respectively), and visually.

OMR-NET: a two-stage octave multi-scale residual network for screen content image compression

Screen content (SC) differs from natural scene (NS) with unique characteristics such as noise-free, repetitive patterns, and high contrast. Aiming at addressing the inadequacies of current learned image compression (LIC) methods for SC, we propose an improved two-stage octave convolutional residual blocks (IToRB) for high and low-frequency feature extraction and a cascaded two-stage multi-scale residual blocks (CTMSRB) for improved multi-scale learning and nonlinearity in SC. Additionally, we employ a window-based attention module (WAM) to capture pixel correlations, especially for high contrast regions in the image. We also construct a diverse SC image compression dataset (SDU-SCICD2K) for training, including text, charts, graphics, animation, movie, game and mixture of SC images and NS images. Experimental results show our method, more suited for SC than NS data, outperforms existing LIC methods in rate-distortion performance on SC images. Empowering In-Browser Deep Learning Inference on Edge Devices with Just-in-Time Kernel Optimizations

Web is increasingly becoming the primary platform to deliver AI services onto edge devices, making in-browser deep learning (DL) inference more prominent. Nevertheless, the heterogeneity of edge devices, combined with the underdeveloped state of Web hardware acceleration practices, hinders current in-browser inference from achieving its full performance potential on target devices. To address this issue, this paper presents the pioneering inbrowser inference system, nnJIT, which enables just-in-time (JIT) auto-generation of optimized computing kernels for edge devices. nnJIT is built upon two novel techniques that significantly reduce kernel search and compilation overhead while improving performance firmly: Tensor-Web Compiling Co-Design lowers compiling costs by around 100X through eliminating redundant and ineffective compiling passes; Web-Specific Lite Kernel Optimization Space reduces kernel tuning costs by focusing on Web programming requirements and efficient device resource utilization, pruning the optimization space from millions to only dozens. nnJIT is evaluated for modern models, e.g., BART, T5, and Llama 2, on a range of edge devices including laptops and smartphones using different browsers and hardware from ARM, Intel, AMD and Nvidia. The results show that nnJIT can achieve up to 8.2X faster within 30 seconds compared to the existing baselines.

AACP: Aesthetics assessment of children's paintings based on self-supervised learning

The Aesthetics Assessment of Children's Paintings (AACP) is an important branch of the image aesthetics assessment (IAA), playing a significant role in children's education. This task presents unique challenges, such as limited available data and the requirement for evaluation metrics from multiple perspectives. However, previous approaches have relied on training large datasets and subsequently providing an aesthetics score to the image, which is not applicable to AACP. To solve this problem, we construct an aesthetics assessment dataset of children's paintings and a model based on self-supervised learning. 1) We build a novel dataset composed of two parts: the first part contains more than 20k unlabeled images of children's paintings; the second part contains 1.2k images of children's paintings, and each image contains eight attributes labeled by multiple design experts. 2) We design a pipeline that includes a feature extraction module, perception modules and a disentangled evaluation module. 3) We conduct both qualitative and quantitative experiments to compare our model's performance with five other methods using the AACP dataset. Our experiments reveal that our method can accurately capture aesthetic features and achieve state-of-the-art performance.

AutoDroid: LLM-powered Task Automation in Android

Mobile task automation is an attractive technique that aims to enable voice-based hands-free user interaction with smartphones. However, existing approaches suffer from poor scalability due to the limited language understanding ability and the non-trivial manual efforts required from developers or end-users. The recent advance of large language models (LLMs) in language understanding and reasoning inspires us to rethink the problem from a model-centric perspective, where task preparation, comprehension, and execution are handled by a unified language model. In this work, we introduce AutoDroid, a mobile task automation system capable of handling arbitrary tasks on any Android application without manual efforts. The key insight is to combine the commonsense knowledge of LLMs and domain-specific knowledge of apps through automated dynamic analysis. The main components include a functionality-aware UI representation method that bridges the UI with the LLM, exploration-based memory injection techniques that augment the app-specific domain knowledge of LLM, and a multi-granularity query optimization module that reduces the cost of model inference. We integrate AutoDroid with off-the-shelf LLMs including online GPT-4/GPT-3.5 and on-device Vicuna, and evaluate its performance on a new benchmark for memory-augmented Android task automation with 158 common tasks. The results demonstrated that AutoDroid is able to precisely generate actions with an accuracy of 90.9%, and complete tasks with a success rate of 71.3%, outperforming the GPT-4-powered baselines by 36.4% and 39.7%. The demo, benchmark suites, and source code of AutoDroid will be released at url{https://autodroid-sys.github.io/}.

Region-controlled Style Transfer

Image style transfer is a challenging task in computational vision. Existing algorithms transfer the color and texture of style images by controlling the neural network's feature layers. However, they fail to control the strength of textures in different regions of the content image. To address this issue, we propose a training method that uses a loss function to constrain the style intensity in different regions. This method guides the transfer strength of style features in different regions based on the gradient relationship between style and content images. Additionally, we introduce a novel feature fusion method that linearly transforms content features to resemble style features while preserving their semantic relationships. Extensive experiments have demonstrated the effectiveness of our proposed approach.

AdaptiveNet: Post-deployment Neural Architecture Adaptation for Diverse Edge Environments

Deep learning models are increasingly deployed to edge devices for real-time applications. To ensure stable service quality across diverse edge environments, it is highly desirable to generate tailored model architectures for different conditions. However, conventional pre-deployment model generation approaches are not satisfactory due to the difficulty of handling the diversity of edge environments and the demand for edge information. In this paper, we propose to adapt the model architecture after deployment in the target environment, where the model quality can be precisely measured and private edge data can be retained. To achieve efficient and effective edge model generation, we introduce a pretraining-assisted on-cloud model elastification method and an edge-friendly on-device architecture search method. Model elastification generates a high-quality search space of model architectures with the guidance of a developer-specified oracle model. Each subnet in the space is a valid model with different environment affinity, and each device efficiently finds and maintains the most suitable subnet based on a series of edge-tailored optimizations. Extensive experiments on various edge devices demonstrate that our approach is able to achieve significantly better accuracy-latency tradeoffs (e.g. 46.74\% higher on average accuracy with a 60\% latency budget) than strong baselines with minimal overhead (13 GPU hours in the cloud and 2 minutes on the edge server).

Turbo: Opportunistic Enhancement for Edge Video Analytics

Edge computing is being widely used for video analytics. To alleviate the inherent tension between accuracy and cost, various video analytics pipelines have been proposed to optimize the usage of GPU on edge nodes. Nonetheless, we find that GPU compute resources provisioned for edge nodes are commonly under-utilized due to video content variations, subsampling and filtering at different places of a pipeline. As opposed to model and pipeline optimization, in this work, we study the problem of opportunistic data enhancement using the non-deterministic and fragmented idle GPU resources. In specific, we propose a task-specific discrimination and enhancement module and a model-aware adversarial training mechanism, providing a way to identify and transform low-quality images that are specific to a video pipeline in an accurate and efficient manner. A multi-exit model structure and a resource-aware scheduler is further developed to make online enhancement decisions and fine-grained inference execution under latency and GPU resource constraints. Experiments across multiple video analytics pipelines and datasets reveal that by judiciously allocating a small amount of idle resources on frames that tend to yield greater marginal benefits from enhancement, our system boosts DNN object detection accuracy by $7.3-11.3\%$ without incurring any latency costs.

Multi-modal application: Image Memes Generation

Meme is an interesting word. Internet memes offer unique insights into the changes in our perception of the world, the media and our own lives. If you surf the Internet for long enough, you will see it somewhere on the Internet. With the rise of social media platforms and convenient image dissemination, Image Meme has gained fame. Image memes have become a kind of pop culture and they play an important role in communication over social media, blogs, and open messages. With the development of artificial intelligence and the widespread use of deep learning, Natural Language Processing (NLP) and Computer Vision (CV) can also be used to solve more problems in life, including meme generation. An Internet meme commonly takes the form of an image and is created by combining a meme template (image) and a caption (natural language sentence). In our project, we propose an end-to-end encoder-decoder architecture meme generator. For a given input sentence, we use the Meme template selection model to determine the emotion it expresses and select the image template. Then generate captions and memes through to the meme caption generator. Code and models are available at github
