FLANS at SemEval-2026 Task 7: RAG with Open-Sourced Smaller LLMs for Everyday Knowledge Across Diverse Languages and Cultures

This system paper describes our participation in the SemEval-2025 Task-7 ``Everyday Knowledge Across Diverse Languages and Cultures''. We attended two subtasks, i.e., Track 1: Short Answer Questions (SAQ), and Track 2: Multiple-Choice Questions (MCQ). The methods we used are retrieval augmented generation (RAGs) with open-sourced smaller LLMs (OS-sLLMs). To better adapt to this shared task, we created our own culturally aware knowledge base (CulKBs) by extracting Wikipedia content using keyword lists we prepared. We extracted both culturally-aware wiki-text and country-specific wiki-summary. In addition to the local CulKBs, we also have one system integrating live online search output via DuckDuckGo. Towards better privacy and sustainability, we aimed to deploy smaller LLMs (sLLMs) that are open-sourced on the Ollama platform. We share the prompts we developed using refinement techniques and report the learning curve of such prompts. The tested languages are English, Spanish, and Chinese for both tracks. Our resources and codes are shared via https://github.com/aaronlifenghan/FLANS-2026

Anomalous valley Hall dynamics of exciton-polaritons

The valley degree of freedom in atomically thin transition-metal dichalcogenides provides a natural binary index for information processing. Exciton-polaritons formed under strong light-matter coupling offer a promising route to overcome the limited lifetime and transport of bare valley excitons. Here we report an anomalous optical valley Hall effect in a monolayer WS2 exciton-polariton system. Using polarization- and time-resolved real-space imaging, we directly visualize a symmetry-breaking spatial separation of polaritons from opposite valleys under linearly polarized excitation, accompanied by an ultrafast Hall drift velocity on the order of 10^5 m/s. This behaviour cannot be accounted for by conventional cavity-induced mechanisms and instead points to a strain-induced synthetic pseudomagnetic field acting on the excitonic component of polaritons. Our results establish exciton-polaritons as a high-speed and optically accessible platform for valley transport, opening pathways towards tunable valleytronic and topological photonic devices.

Multi-watt long-wavelength infrared femtosecond lasers and resonant enamel ablation

High-power broadband tunable long-wavelength infrared (LWIR) femtosecond lasers operating at fingerprint wavelengths of 7-14 {\mu}m hold significant promise across a range of applications, including molecular hyperspectral imaging, strong-field light-matter interaction, and resonant tissue ablation. Here we present 6-12 {\mu}m broadband tunable parametric amplifier based on LiGaS2 or BaGa4S7, generating new record output power of 2.4 W at 7.5 {\mu}m, and 1.5 W at 9.5 {\mu}m, pumped by a simple and effective thin-square-rod Yb:YAG amplifier producing 110 W 274 fs output pulses. As a proof of concept, we showcase efficient resonant ablation and microstructure fabrication on enamel at the hydroxyapatite resonant wavelength of 9.5 {\mu}m, with a laser intensity two orders-of-magnitude lower than that required by non-resonant femtosecond lasers, which could foster more precision surgical applications with superior biosafety.
