Normality of Ideals and Modules

We investigate when the Rees algebra of an integrally closed $\mathfrak{m}$-primary ideal in a regular local ring is a Cohen-Macaulay normal domain. While this property always holds in dimension two, it fails in general in higher dimensions, prompting a search for sufficient conditions on the ideal. We show that if an integrally closed ideal contains a part of regular system of parameters of length $d-2$, where $d$ is the dimension of the regular local ring, then its Rees algebra is Cohen-Macaulay and normal. We also extend results of Goto and Ciuperc\u{a} by proving the same conclusion when the minimal number of generators of an ideal is at most $d+2$. Furthermore, we treat the case of integrally closed zero-dimensional ideals generated by $d+3$ homogeneous polynomials. Finally, using generic Bourbaki ideals, we generalize these results to integrally closed torsionfree modules of finite colength.

On the ubiquity of Arf rings

We introduce and develop the theory of weakly Arf rings, which is a generalization of Arf rings, initially defined by J. Lipman in 1971. We provide characterizations of weakly Arf rings and study the relation between these rings, the Arf rings, and the strict closedness of rings. Furthermore, we give various examples of weakly Arf rings that come from idealizations, fiber products, determinantal rings, and invariant subrings.

Reflexive modules over the endomorphism algebras of reflexive trace ideals

In the present paper we investigate reflexive modules over the endomorphism algebras of reflexive trace ideals in a one-dimensional Cohen-Macaulay local ring. The main theorem generalizes both of the results of S. Goto, N. Matsuoka, and T. T. Phuong and T. Kobayashi concerning the endomorphism algebra of its maximal ideal. We also explore the question of when the category of reflexive modules is of finite type, i.e., the base ring has only finitely many isomorphism classes of indecomposable reflexive modules. We show that, if the category is of finite type, the ring is analytically unramified and has only finitely many Ulrich ideals. As a consequence, there are only finitely many Ulrich ideals are contained in Arf local rings once the normalization is a local ring.

Rings with q-torsionfree canonical modules

Let A be a Noetherian local ring with canonical module K. We characterize A when K is a torsionless, reflexive, or q-torsionfree module. If A is a Cohen-Macaulay ring, H.-B. Foxby proved in 1974 that the A-module K is q-torsionfree if and only if the ring A is q-Gorenstein. With mild assumptions, we provide a generalization of Foxby's result to arbitrary Noetherian local rings admitting the canonical module. In particular, since the reflexivity of the canonical module is closely related to the ring being Gorenstein in low codimension, we also explore quasi-normal rings, introduced by W. V. Vasconcelos. We provide several examples as well.

On generalized Gorenstein local rings

In this paper, we introduce generalized Gorenstein local (GGL) rings. The notion of GGL rings is a natural generalization of the notion of almost Gorenstein rings, which can thus be treated as part of the theory of GGL rings. For a Cohen-Macaulay local ring $R$, we explore the endomorphism algebra of the maximal ideal, the trace ideal of the canonical module, Ulrich ideals, and Rees algebras of parameter ideals in connection with the GGL property. We also give numerous examples of numerical semigroup rings, idealizations, and determinantal rings of certain matrices.

Gorensteinness in Rees algebras of powers of parameter ideals

This paper gives a necessary and sufficient condition for Gorensteinness in Rees algebras of the $d$-th power of parameter ideals in certain Noetherian local rings of dimension $d\ge 2$. The main result of this paper produces many Gorenstein Rees algebras over non-Cohen-Macaulay local rings. For example, the Rees algebra $\mathcal{R}(\mathfrak{q}^d)=\oplus_{i\ge 0}\mathfrak{q}^{di}$ is Gorenstein for every parameter ideal $\mathfrak{q}$ that is a reduction of the maximal ideal in a $d$-dimensional Buchsbaum local ring of depth 1 and multiplicity 2.

On the weakly Arf $(S_2)$-ifications of Noetherian rings

The weakly Arf $(S_2)$-ification of a commutative Noetherian ring $R$ is considered to be a birational extension which is good next to the normalization. The weakly Arf property (WAP for short) of $R$ was introduced in 1971 by J. Lipman with his famous paper [12], and recently rediscovered by [4], being closely explored with further developments. The present paper aims at constructing, for a given Noetherian ring $R$ which satisfies certain mild conditions, the smallest module-finite birational extension of $R$ which satisfies WAP and the condition $(S_2)$ of Serre. We shall call this extension the weakly Arf $(S_2)$-ification, and develop the basic theory, including some existence theorems.

When are the rings $I:I$ Gorenstein?

Let $I ~(\ne A)$ be an ideal of a $d$-dimensional Noetherian local ring $A$ with $\operatorname{ht}_AI \ge 2$, containing a non-zerodivisor. The problem of when the ring $I:I=\operatorname{End}_AI$ is Gorenstein is studied, in connection with the problem of the Gorensteinness in Rees algebras $\mathcal{R}_A(Q^d)$ for certain parameter ideals $Q$ of $A$, that was closely explored by the preceding paper of the second and third authors. Examples are given.

A criterion for reflexivity of modules

Let $M$ be a finitely generated module over a ring $Λ$. With certain mild assumptions on $Λ$, it is proven that $M$ is a reflexive $Λ$-module, once $M \cong M^{**}$ as a $Λ$-module.

Ulrich ideals in the ring $k[[t^5,t^{11}]]$

The Ulrich ideals in the semigroup rings $k[[t^5, t^{11}]]$ and $k[[t^5,t^6,t^9]]$ are determined, by describing the normal forms of systems of generators, where $k[[t]]$ denotes the formal power series ring over a field $k$.

Ulrich ideals in numerical semigroup rings of small multiplicity

Ulrich ideals in numerical semigroup rings of small multiplicity are studied. If the semigroups are three-generated but not symmetric, the semigroup rings are Golod, since the Betti numbers of the residue class fields of the semigroup rings form an arithmetic progression; therefore, these semigroup rings are G-regular, possessing no Ulrich ideals. Nevertheless, even in the three-generated case, the situation is different, when the semigroups are symmetric. We shall explore this phenomenon, describing an explicit system of generators, that is the normal form of generators, for the Ulrich ideals in the numerical semigroup rings of multiplicity at most 3. As the multiplicity is greater than $3$, in general the task of determining all the Ulrich ideals seems formidable, which we shall experience, analyzing one of the simplest examples of semigroup rings of multiplicity $4$.

Topics on strict closure of rings

In 1971, J. Lipman introduced the notion of strict closure of a ring in another, and established the underlying theory in connection with a conjecture of O. Zariski. In this paper, for further developments of the theory, we investigate three different topics related to strict closure of rings. The first one concerns construction of the closure, and the second one is the study regarding the question of whether the strict closedness is inherited under flat homomorphisms. We finally handle the question of when the Arf closure coincides with the strict closure. Examples are explored to illustrate our theorems.

Construction of strictly closed rings

The notion of strict closedness of rings was given by J. Lipman in connection with a conjecture of O. Zariski. The present purpose is to give a practical method of construction of strictly closed rings. It is also shown that the Stanley-Reisner rings of simplicial complexes (resp. $F$-pure rings satisfying the condition $(S_2)$ of Serre) are strictly closed (resp. weakly Arf) rings.

Efficient generation of ideals in core subalgebras of the polynomial ring k[t] over a field k

This note aims at finding explicit and efficient generation of ideals in subalgebras $R$ of the polynomial ring $S=k[t]$ ($k$ a field) such that $t^{c_0}S \subseteq R$ for some integer $c_0 > 0$. The class of these subalgebras which we call cores of $S$ includes the semigroup rings $k[H]$ of numerical semigroups $H$, but much larger than the class of numerical semigroup rings. For $R=k[H]$ and $M \in \operatorname{Max}R$, our result eventually shows that $μ_{R}(M) \in \{1,2,μ(H)\}$ where $μ_{R}(M)$ (resp. $μ(H)$) stands for the minimal number of generators of $M$ (resp. $H$), which covers in the specific case the classical result of O. Forster-R. G. Swan.

Almost Gorenstein rings arising from fiber products

The purpose of this paper is, as part of the stratification of Cohen-Macaulay rings, to investigate the question of when the fiber products are almost Gorenstein rings. We show that the fiber product $R \times_T S$ of Cohen-Macaulay local rings $R$, $S$ of the same dimension $d>0$ over a regular local ring $T$ with $\dim T=d-1$ is an almost Gorenstein ring if and only if so are $R$ and $S$. Besides, the other generalizations of Gorenstein properties are also explored.

Ulrich ideals and 2-AGL rings

The notion of 2-almost Gorenstein local ring (2-AGL ring for short) is a generalization of the notion of almost Gorenstein local ring from the point of view of Sally modules of canonical ideals. In this paper, for further developments of the theory, we discuss three different topics on 2-AGL rings. The first one is to clarify the structure of minimal presentations of canonical ideals, and the second one is the study of the question of when certain fiber products, so called amalgamated duplications are 2-AGL rings. We also explore Ulrich ideals in 2-AGL rings, mainly two-generated ones.

Correspondence between trace ideals and birational extensions with application to the analysis of the Gorenstein property of rings

Over an arbitrary commutative ring, correspondences among three sets, the set of trace ideals, the set of stable ideals, and the set of birational extensions of the base ring, are studied. The correspondences are well-behaved, if the base ring is a Gorenstein ring of dimension one. It is shown that with one extremal exception, the surjectivity of one of the correspondences characterizes the Gorenstein property of the base ring, provided it is a Cohen-Macaulay local ring of dimension one. Over a commutative Noetherian ring, a characterization of modules in which every submodule is a trace module is given. The notion of anti-stable rings is introduced, exploring their basic properties.

On the ideal case of a conjecture of Huneke and Wiegand

A conjecture of Huneke and Wiegand claims that, over one-dimensional commutative Noetherian local domains, the tensor product of a finitely generated, non-free, torsion-free module with its algebraic dual always has torsion. Building on a beautiful result of Corso, Huneke, Katz and Vasconcelos, we prove that the conjecture is affirmative for a large class of ideals over arbitrary one-dimensional local domains. Furthermore we study a higher dimensional analog of the conjecture for integrally closed ideals over Noetherian rings that are not necessarily local. We also consider a related question on the conjecture and give an affirmative answer for first syzygies of maximal Cohen-Macaulay modules.
