X-ray free-electron laser observation of giant and anisotropic magnetostriction in $β$-O$_{2}$ at 110 Tesla

In strong magnetic fields beyond 100 T, the significant Zeeman energy competes with the lattice interactions, where a considerable magnetostriction is expected. However, the microscopic observation of the magnetostriction above 100 T has been hindered due to the short pulse duration of $μ$-seconds and the coil's destruction. Here, we report the observation of the giant and anisotropic magnetostriction of $\sim 1$ % at 110 T in the spin-controlled crystal, $β$-O$_{2}$, by combining the single-shot diffraction of x-ray free-electron laser (XFEL) and the newly developed portable 100 T generator (PINK-02). The very soft and anisotropic response of $β$-O$_{2}$ should originate in the competing van der Waals force and exchange interaction, and also the frustration of spin and lattice on the triangular network. The XFEL experiment above 100 T using PINK-02 enables microscopic investigations on materials' properties at high magnetic fields, providing insights into how spins contribute to the stability of crystal structures.

Distinctive Doping Dependence of Upper Critical Field in Iron-Based Superconductor LaFeAsO$_{1-x}$H$_{x}$

High magnetic fields up to 105 T have been utilized in deriving the upper critical field $B_{\rm c2}$ of LaFeAsO$_{1-x}$H$_x$ throughout whole temperatures below $T_{\rm c}$. Resistivity measurements demonstrate that $B_{\rm c2}$ behaves differently in samples with $x = 0.12$ (SC1) from those with 0.32 (SC2). In SC1, the two-band model assuming the $s$-wave pairing gives a good fitting with repulsive intraband interaction and dominant interband coupling. In SC2, we have to assume attractive intraband interaction with weak interband coupling, which in fact suggests a non-$s$-wave pairing in view of the strong Coulomb repulsion. These results support the possibility that SC1 and SC2 have different pairing symmetries.

Capacitive detection of magnetostriction, dielectric constant, and magneto-caloric effects in pulsed magnetic fields

We report on the development of a capacitance measuring system which allows measurements of capacitance in pulsed magnetic fields up to 61~T. By using this system, magnetic-field responses of various physical quantities such magnetostriction, magnetic-field-induced change in complex dielectric constant, and magneto-caloric effect can be investigated in pulsed-magnetic-field conditions. Here, we examine the validity of our system for investigations of these magnetic-field-induced phenomena in pulse magnets. For the magnetostriction measurement, magnetostriction of a specimen can be measured through a change in the capacitance between two aligned electrodes glued on the specimen and a dilatometer. We demonstrate a precise detection of valley polarization in semimetallic bismuth through a magnetostriction signal with a resolution better than 10$^{-6}$ of the relative length change. For the magnetic-field-induced change in complex dielectric constant, we successfully observed clear dielectric anomalies accompanied by magnetic/magnetoelectric phase transitions in multiferroic Pb(TiO)Cu$_4$(PO$_4$)$_4$. For the measurement of magneto-caloric effect, a magnetic-field-induced change in sample temperature was verified for Gd$_3$Ga$_5$O$_{12}$ with a capacitance thermometer made of a non-magnetic ferroelectric compound KTa$_{1-x}$Nb$_x$O$_3$ ($x$ = 0.02) whose capacitance is nearly field-independent. These results show that our capacitance measuring system is a promising tool to study various magnetic-field-induced phenomena which have been difficult to detect in pulsed magnetic fields.

Direct coupling of ferromagnetic moment and ferroelectric polarization in BiFeO$_3$

The spin-driven component of electric polarization in a single crystal of multiferroic BiFeO$_{3}$ was experimentally investigated in pulsed high magnetic fields up to 41 T. Sequential measurements of electric polarization for various magnetic field directions provide clear evidence of electric polarization normal to the hexagonal $c$ axis (${\bf P}_{\rm t}$) in not only the cycloidal phase, but also the field-induced canted antiferromagnetic phase. The direction of ${\bf P}_{\rm t}$ is directly coupled with the ferromagnetic moment in the canted antiferromagnetic phase, and thus controlled by changing the direction of the applied magnetic field. This magnetoelectric coupling is reasonably reproduced by the metal-ligand hybridization model.

Successive field-induced transitions in BiFeO$_{3}$ around room temperature

The effects of high magnetic fields applied perpendicular to the spontaneous ferroelectric polarization on single crystals of BiFeO$_3$ were investigated through magnetization, magnetostriction, and neutron diffraction measurements. The magnetostriction measurements revealed lattice distortion of $2\times 10^{-5}$, during the reorientation process of the cycloidal spin order by applied magnetic fields. Furthermore, anomalous changes in magnetostriction and electric polarization at a larger field demonstrate an intermediate phase between cycloidal and canted antiferromagnetic states, where a large magnetoelectric effect was observed. Neutron diffraction measurements clarified that incommensurate spin modulation along [110] direction in the cycloidal phase becomes commensurate in the intermediate phase. Theoretical calculations based on the standard spin Hamiltonian of this material suggest an antiferromagnetic cone-type spin order in the intermediate phase.
