Biodegradable, Millimeter-Scale Light-Emitting Sensors for Distributed Environmental Monitoring-Functional Pixie Dust

Methods for large-area, precise monitoring across natural environments are of growing interest due to pressing needs for sustainable management of rapidly increasing anthropogenic activities. Established approaches involve sparse spatial sampling and/or sequential measurements, while emerging techniques exploit miniaturized electronics or passive optical methods. Various constraints in scalability, costs, robustness, operational range and other factors create a need for alternatives. Here, we introduce a concept that overcomes many of these limitations through the combined use of chemically induced light emission and chemically responsive optical filter elements in millimeter-scale systems that we refer to as functional pixie dust (fPD) sensors, designed specifically for monitoring natural water systems during nighttime to eliminate background optical interference and to enhance remote analysis. These floating devices act as Lagrangian tracers to follow surface flows and to simultaneously measure the concentrations of key chemical species along their trajectories. Optimized designs exploit environmentally compatible constituent materials that are also degradable through natural processes to benign end products, thereby eliminating the need for recovery. Spatially and spectrally resolved ratiometric measurement schemes ensure robust operation and ability to address practical requirements in range, operational lifetime, time response and sensitivity. Demonstrations include distributed measurements of pH, Hg2+, and NO2-, each of relevance to industrial discharge, toxic metal contamination, and nitrogen-rich runoff, adapted for static concentration gradients, flow-driven transport conditions, and outdoor aquatic settings. The results establish a framework for environmental sensing using degradable, self-powered microsystems capable of scalable deployment and remote readout.

A cryogenic gas target for high-intensity radioactive ion beam production at HIRFL-RIBLL

A liquid-nitrogen-cooled cryogenic gas target system has been developed and installed for radioactive ion beam (RIB) production at the Radioactive Ion Beam Line in Lanzhou (RIBLL). Light-element gases ($\mathrm{H}_2$, $\mathrm{D}_2$, and $^4\mathrm{He}$) filled in the target cell were cooled to cryogenic temperatures, with the gas-cell outlet temperature typically monitored at 82--86 K during beam irradiation and operating pressures up to 1000 mbar. The system was used to produce $^{7}\mathrm{Be}$, $^{16}\mathrm{N}$, and $^{15}\mathrm{O}$ RIBs via the $^{1}\mathrm{H}(^{7}\mathrm{Li}, ^{7}\mathrm{Be})n$, $^{2}\mathrm{H}(^{15}\mathrm{N}, ^{16}\mathrm{N})p$, and $^{1}\mathrm{H}(^{15}\mathrm{N}, ^{15}\mathrm{O})n$ inverse kinematics reactions, yielding purities of 85\%, 99\%, and 95\%, with intensities of $1.02\times10^{6}$, $2.7\times10^{5}$, and $1.0\times10^{5}$ pps, respectively. A $^{93m}\mathrm{Mo}$ isomer beam was also produced via the $\mathrm{^4He(^{94}Zr,} 5n)^{93m}\mathrm{Mo}$ reaction, achieving an intensity of $5.38\times10^{3}$ pps and a purity of 20\% (which can be further improved to $\sim$50\% with offline time-of-flight gating). By delivering a broader range of high-intensity secondary RIBs, this setup establishes a robust platform at RIBLL for low- and medium-energy nuclear astrophysics and reaction studies.

Atomic-Scale Insights into Solute Drag Effects on Grain Boundary Motion in Mg-Al and Mg-Ca Alloys

The slip behavior of dislocations and grain boundaries critically governs recrystallization and plastic deformation in Mg alloys and can be strongly influenced by solutes. However, the quantitative effects of solute distribution on defect mobility remain unclear. Using molecular dynamics and Monte Carlo simulations, we systematically investigate how Al and Ca solutes affect the motion of dislocations, low-angle grain boundaries (LAGBs), and high-angle grain boundaries (HAGBs) in Mg. Within the idealized framework of random solid-solution, solute drag is dominated by elastic interactions arising from atomic size mismatch, resulting in a stronger resistance from Ca than from Al. In contrast, under the more realistic condition where solute segregation occurs, the dominant mechanism shifts to chemically driven pinning, whose effectiveness is governed by the attainable segregation density. Owing to strong Ca-Ca repulsion, Al achieves substantially higher segregation concentrations than Ca and therefore exerts much stronger pinning effects. Notably, solute-induced retardation is significantly more pronounced for HAGBs than for LAGBs, leading to amplified solute effects during the late stages of recrystallization, where grain growth is controlled primarily by HAGB migration. These results provide atomic-scale insight into experimentally observed grain refinement in Mg alloys.

Experimental Study of Bremsstrahlung Gamma Ray Emission and Short-Range Correlations in $^{124}$Sn+$^{124}$Sn Collisions at 25 MeV/u

Short-range correlation (SRC) in nuclei refers to nucleons forming temporally correlated pairs in close proximity, giving rise to the high momentum of the nucleons beyond the Fermi surface. It has been reported that bremsstrahlung $\gamma$ production from neutron-proton process in heavy-ion reactions provides a potential probe to the SRC abundance in nuclei. In this paper, we present in detail the precision measurement of bremsstrahlung $\gamma$-rays in $\rm ^{124}Sn$+$\rm ^{124}Sn$ reactions at 25 MeV/u using the Compact Spectrometer for Heavy IoN Experiment (CSHINE). A comprehensive experimental and analysis framework is established to ensure the reliability and robustness of the extracted results. Background contributions are evaluated and subtracted using independent methods, and the consistency of the analysis is systematically validated. By comparing the experimental $\gamma$ spectrum with the Isospin-dependent Boltzmann-Uehling-Uhlenbeck simulations, the high momentum tail (HMT) fraction of $R_{\rm HMT}=(20 \pm 3)\%$ is derived in $^{124}$Sn nuclei. This work provides a detailed and validated experimental framework for extracting SRC information from bremsstrahlung $\gamma$-ray emission and demonstrates the feasibility of studying nucleon SRCs with high precision in low-energy heavy-ion collisions.

Precise Measurement of Short-Range Correlations in Nuclei from Bremsstrahlung Gamma Ray Emission in Low-Energy Heavy-Ion Collisions

Atomic nuclei and dense nucleonic matter in neutron stars exhibit short-range correlations (SRCs), where nucleons form temporally correlated pairs in proximity beyond mean-field approximation. It is essential to make precision measurement of the fraction of SRC since it carries the signature of underlying quark dynamics in nuclear medium. In this letter, we present the first high-precision measurement of neutron-proton bremsstrahlung $\gamma$-ray emission from the symmetric $\rm ^{124}Sn$+$\rm ^{124}Sn$ reactions at 25 MeV/u. From the observed spectral hardening, the precise SRC fraction in the $\rm ^{124}Sn$ nucleus is extracted to be $(20 \pm 3)\%$. This result provides a novel, direct and unambiguous evidence of SRCs, and demonstrates that low-energy heavy-ion collisions offers a new approach to studying nuclear structure in connection with quark-level dynamics.

Extract neutron-neutron interaction strength and spatial-temporal dynamics of neutron emission from two-particle correlation function

The neutron-neutron ($nn$) correlation function has been measured in 25 MeV/u $^{124}$Sn+$^{124}$Sn reactions. Using the Lednick\'y-Lyuboshitz approach, the $nn$ scattering length and effective range ($f_{0}^{nn}$, $d_{0}^{nn}$), as well as the reduced space-time size $R^{(0)}$ of the neutron emission source are simultaneously extracted as ($18.9^{+1.3}_{-1.2}$ fm, $1.9^{+1.3}_{-1.0}$ fm) and $4.12 \pm 0.12$ fm, respectively. The measured $nn$ scattering length is consistent with the results obtained in the low-energy scattering $^{2}{\rm H}(\pi^{-},\gamma)2n$, indicating heavy-ion collisions can serve as an effective approach for measuring $nn$ interactions and further investigating the charge symmetry breaking of nuclear force. The space-time size extracted from momentum-gated correlation functions exhibits clear dependence on the pair momentum, with $R^{(0)}=2.8 \pm 0.1 $ fm and $4.9 \pm 0.2$ fm being determined for the high and low momentum neutrons, respectively.

The neutron array of the compact spectrometer for heavy ion experiments in Fermi energy region

The emission of neutrons from heavy ion reactions is an important observable for studying the asymmetric nuclear equation of state and the reaction dynamics. A 20-unit neutron array has been developed and mounted on the compact spectrometer for heavy ion experiments (CSHINE) to measure the neutron spectra, neutron-neutron and neutron-proton correlation functions. Each unit consists of a $\rm 15\times 15\times 15~cm^3$ plastic scintillator coupled to a $ \phi=52 ~\rm mm$ photomultiplier. The Geant4 simulation with optical process is performed to investigate the time resolution and the neutron detection efficiency. The inherent time resolution of 212 ps is obtained by cosmic ray coincidence test. The n-$\gamma$ discrimination and time-of-flight performance are given by $\rm ^{252}Cf$ radioactive source test and beam test. The neutron energy spectra have been obtained in the angle range $30^\circ \le \theta_{\rm lab} \le 51^\circ$ in the beam experiment of $^{124}$Sn+$^{124}$Sn at 25 MeV/u with CSHINE.

Enhance Reasoning for Large Language Models in the Game Werewolf

This paper presents an innovative framework that integrates Large Language Models (LLMs) with an external Thinker module to enhance the reasoning capabilities of LLM-based agents. Unlike augmenting LLMs with prompt engineering, Thinker directly harnesses knowledge from databases and employs various optimization techniques. The framework forms a reasoning hierarchy where LLMs handle intuitive System-1 tasks such as natural language processing, while the Thinker focuses on cognitive System-2 tasks that require complex logical analysis and domain-specific knowledge. Our framework is presented using a 9-player Werewolf game that demands dual-system reasoning. We introduce a communication protocol between LLMs and the Thinker, and train the Thinker using data from 18800 human sessions and reinforcement learning. Experiments demonstrate the framework's effectiveness in deductive reasoning, speech generation, and online game evaluation. Additionally, we fine-tune a 6B LLM to surpass GPT4 when integrated with the Thinker. This paper also contributes the largest dataset for social deduction games to date.

Revisit to the yield ratio of triton and $^3$He as an indicator of neutron-rich neck emission

The neutron rich neck zone created in heavy ion reaction is experimentally probed by the production of the $A=3$ isobars. The energy spectra and angular distributions of triton and $^3$He are measured with the CSHINE detector in $^{86}$Kr +$^{208}$Pb reactions at 25 MeV/u. While the energy spectrum of $^{3}$He is harder than that of triton, known as "$^{3}$He-puzzle", the yield ratio $R({\rm t/^3He})$ presents a robust rising trend with the polar angle in laboratory. Using the fission fragments to reconstruct the fission plane, the enhancement of out-plane $R({\rm t/^3He})$ is confirmed in comparison to the in-plane ratios. Transport model simulations reproduce qualitatively the experimental trends, but the quantitative agreement is not achieved. The results demonstrate that a neutron rich neck zone is formed in the reactions. Further studies are called for to understand the clustering and the isospin dynamics related to neck formation.

Probing high-momentum component in nucleon momentum distribution by neutron-proton bremsstrahlung γ-rays in heavy ion reactions

The high momentum tail (HMT) of nucleons, as a signature of the short-range correlations in nuclei, has been investigated by the high-energy bremsstrahlung $γ$ rays produced in $^{86}$Kr + $^{124}$Sn at 25 MeV/u. The energetic photons are measured by a CsI(Tl) hodoscope mounted on the spectrometer CSHINE. The energy spectrum above 30 MeV can be reproduced by the IBUU model calculations incorporating the photon production channel from $np$ process in which the HMTs of nucleons is considered. A non-zero HMT ratio of about $15\%$ is favored by the data. The effect of the capture channel $np \to dγ$ is demonstrated.

A CsI hodoscope on CSHINE for Bremsstrahlung γ-rays in Heavy Ion Reactions

Bremsstrahlung $γ$ production in heavy ion reactions at Fermi energies carries important physical information including the nuclear symmetry energy at supra-saturation densities. In order to detect the high energy Bremsstrahlung $γ$ rays, a hodoscope consisting of 15 CsI(Tl) crystal read out by photo multiplier tubes has been built, tested and operated in experiment. The resolution, efficiency and linear response of the units to $γ$ rays have been studied using radioactive source and $({\rm p},γ)$ reactions. The inherent energy resolution of $1.6\%+2\%/E_γ^{1/2}$ is obtained. Reconstruction method has been established through Geant 4 simulations, reproducing the experimental results where comparison can be made. Using the reconstruction method developed, the whole efficiency of the hodoscope is about $2.6\times 10^{-4}$ against the $4π$ emissions at the target position, exhibiting insignificant dependence on the energy of incident $γ$ rays above 20 MeV. The hodoscope is operated in the experiment of $^{86}$Kr + $^{124}$Sn at 25 MeV/u, and a full $γ$ energy spectrum up to 80 MeV has been obtained.

Observing the Ping-pong Modality of Isospin Degree of Freedom in Cluster Emission from Heavy Ion Reactions

Two-body correlations of the isotope-resolved light and heavy clusters are measured in $^{86}$Kr+$^{\rm 208}$Pb reactions at 25 MeV/u. The yield and kinetic variables of the $A=3$ isobars, triton and $^3$He, are analyzed in coincidence with the heavy clusters of $7\le A \le 14$ emitted at the earlier chance. While the velocity spectra of both triton and $^3$He exhibit scaling behavior over the type of the heavy clusters, the yield ratios of ${\rm t/^3He}$ correlate reversely to the neutron-to-proton ratio $N/Z$ of the latter, showing the ping-pong modality of the $N/Z$ of emitted clusters. The commonality that the $N/Z$ of the residues keeps the initial system value is extended to the cluster emission in heavy ion reactions. The comparison of transport model calculations to the data is discussed.

An FPGA-based Trigger System for CSHINE

A trigger system of general function is designed using the commercial module CAEN V2495 for heavy ion nuclear reaction experiment at Fermi energies. The system has been applied and verified on CSHINE (Compact Spectrometer for Heavy IoN Experiment). Based on the field programmable logic gate array (FPGA) technology of command register access and remote computer control operation, trigger functions can be flexibly configured according to the experimental physical goals. Using the trigger system on CSHINE, we carried out the beam experiment of 25 MeV/u $ ^{86}{\rm Kr}+ ^{124}{\rm Sn}$ on the Radioactive Ion Beam Line 1 in Lanzhou (RIBLL1), China. The online results demonstrate that the trigger system works normally and correctly. The system can be extended to other experiments.

Crashworthiness design of 3D lattice-structure filled thin-walled tubes based on data mining

Lattice structures and thin-walled tubes are two types of energy-absorbers widely studied and applied in engineering practice. In this study, a new type of lattice-structure filled thin-walled tube (LFT) was proposed. In this new type of LFT, a BCC-Z lattice structure was filled into a square thin-walled tube. Then using data mining, a 3-D geometric design with five design variables was conducted on this new LFT. Using Latin Hypercubic sampling algorithm, 150 design cases were generated. Numerical models were then developed to simulate their crush behavior, and the simulation dataset was used for data mining. The results showed that (1) Filling the BBC-Z lattice structure into a thin-walled tube can significantly improve the energy absorption (EA) capacity of the structure. (2) The decision trees generated in the data mining process indicated that the rod diameter d of lattice structure is the key design variable that has most significant impact on EA, followed by m and n. (3) The design rules to build LFTs with high EA efficiency (SEA>=16 kJ/kg and CFE>=45%), high total EA (SEA>=16 kJ/kg and EA>=6 kJ), and lightweight (SEA>=16 kJ/kg and Mass<=0.45 kg) were obtained from decision trees. The ideal configurations of LFT corresponding to these three objectives are: d>2 mm, n>2 and m>3 for high EA efficiency; d>2 mm, n>2 and m>3 for high total EA; and d>2 mm, n>2, m<=4 and t<=1.7 mm for lightweight.

A Proof of Non-stationary Channel Polarization

In this letter, we consider the proof of non-stationary channel polarization theory. First we construct a multi-channel stochastic process for the non-stationary channel polarization operation. Then based on this stochastic process, we extend Arıkan's standard martingale proof method on the average channel capacity and average channel Bhattacharyya parameter, by which we have proved the non-stationary channel polarization theory.

Automated verification of dynamic root of trust protocols (long version)

Automated verification of security protocols based on dynamic root of trust, typically relying on protected hardware such as TPM, involves several challenges that we address in this paper. We model the semantics of trusted computing platforms (including CPU, TPM, OS, and other essential components) and of associated protocols in a classical process calculus accepted by ProVerif. As part of the formalization effort, we introduce new equational theories for representing TPM specific platform states and dynamically loaded programs. Formal models for such an extensive set of features cannot be readily handled by ProVerif, due especially to the search space generated by unbounded extensions of TPM registers. In this context we introduce a transformation of the TPM process, that simplifies the structure of the search space for automated verification, while preserving the security properties of interest. This allows to run ProVerif on our proposed models, so we can derive automatically security guarantees for protocols running in a dynamic root of trust context.
