Constructing Good Abelian Codes via Shift Bounds and Genetic Algorithms

This paper investigates the construction of linear codes via abelian codes over finite fields. By exploiting the algebraic structure of multivariate polynomial quotient rings, we derive lower bounds on the minimum distance using a generalized shift bound, which extends the classical van Lint-Wilson bound for cyclic codes. Several infinite families of abelian codes are explicitly constructed, including binary and ternary cases that extend previously known cyclic constructions. To find more abelian codes with good parameters, we apply a genetic algorithm that searches over defining sets represented as binary chromosomes of cyclotomic cosets; the fitness function compares the computed minimum distance against the best known linear code (BKLC) bounds. The search yields multiple record-breaking codes over F_3 and F_4, with improvements over Grassl's tables. Furthermore, the nested structure of these codes enables the application of Construction X, yielding additional linear codes with improved parameters. The results demonstrate that abelian codes, combined with heuristic search, form a viable way for discovering linear codes with unknown parameters.

Entanglement-Assisted Quantum Locally Recoverable Codes: Characterizations, Bounds, and Constructions

Quantum locally recoverable codes (qLRCs) allow a single qudit erasure to be corrected by accessing only a small number of other qudits. Standard CSS and Hermitian constructions, however, impose dual-containing or self-orthogonal constraints on the underlying classical codes, thereby restricting the well-structured classical LRCs (cLRCs) that can be used to construct qLRCs. To relax these constraints, we introduce entanglement-assisted quantum locally recoverable codes (EAQLRCs) by assuming that halves of the pre-shared maximally entangled pairs are noiseless. We characterize sufficient support conditions on extended stabilizers under which entanglement-assisted stabilizer codes have locality $r$ and derive a CSS-like construction from two classical codes without imposing the ordinary dual-containing condition. We further establish an upper bound on locality and a Singleton-like bound for arbitrary CSS-like EAQLRCs, and characterize the pure codes attaining equality in the latter bound. These results yield a general framework for constructing optimal pure EAQLRCs from pairs of cLRCs. Applying this framework to $\ell$-intersection pairs of MDS codes and block parity-check matrices, we obtain two families of optimal pure CSS-like EAQLRCs with flexible parameters and nontrivial localities. To the best of our knowledge, these represent the first explicit families of EAQLRCs.

Unique Decoding of Extended Subcodes of GRS Codes Using Error-Correcting Pairs

Extended Han-Zhang codes are a class of linear codes where each code is either a non-generalized Reed-Solomon (non-GRS) maximum distance separable (MDS) code or a near MDS (NMDS) code. They have important applications in communication, cryptography, and storage systems. While many algebraic properties and explicit constructions of extended Han-Zhang codes have been well studied in the literature, their decoding has been unexplored. In this paper, we focus on their decoding problems in terms of $\ell$-error-correcting pairs ($\ell$-ECPs) and deep holes. On the one hand, we determine the existence and specific forms of their $\ell$-ECPs, and further present an explicit decoding algorithm for extended Han-Zhang codes based on these $\ell$-ECPs, which can correct up to $\ell$ errors in polynomial time, with $\ell$ about half of the minimum distance. On the other hand, we determine the covering radius of extended Han-Zhang codes and characterize two classes of their deep holes, which are closely related to the maximum-likelihood decoding method. By employing these deep holes, we also construct more non-GRS MDS codes with larger lengths and dimensions, and discuss the monomial equivalence between them and the well-known Roth-Lempel codes. Some concrete examples are also given to support these results.

Several new classes of MDS symbol-pair codes derived from matrix-product codes

In order to correct the pair-errors generated during the transmission of modern high-density data storage that the outputs of the channels consist of overlapping pairs of symbols, a new coding scheme named symbol-pair code is proposed. The error-correcting capability of the symbol-pair code is determined by its minimum symbol-pair distance. For such codes, the larger the minimum symbol-pair distance, the better. It is a challenging task to construct symbol-pair codes with optimal parameters, especially, maximum-distance-separable (MDS) symbol-pair codes. In this paper, the permutation equivalence codes of matrix-product codes with underlying matrices of orders $3$ and $4$ are used to extend the minimum symbol-pair distance, four new classes of MDS symbol-pair codes and a new class of AMDS symbol-pair codes are derived.

On the Existence of Galois Self-Dual GRS and TGRS Codes

Let $q=p^m$ be a prime power and $e$ be an integer with $0\leq e\leq m-1$. $e$-Galois self-dual codes are generalizations of Euclidean $(e=0)$ and Hermitian ($e=\frac{m}{2}$ with even $m$) self-dual codes. In this paper, for a linear code $\C$ and a nonzero vector $\bm{u}\in \F_q^n$, we give a sufficient and necessary condition for the dual extended code $\underline{\C}[\bm{u}]$ of $\C$ to be $e$-Galois self-orthogonal. From this, a new systematic approach is proposed to prove the existence of $e$-Galois self-dual codes. By this method, we prove that $e$-Galois self-dual (extended) generalized Reed-Solomon (GRS) codes of length $n>\min\{p^e+1,p^{m-e}+1\}$ do not exist, where $1\leq e\leq m-1$. Moreover, based on the non-GRS properties of twisted GRS (TGRS) codes, we show that in many cases $e$-Galois self-dual (extended) TGRS codes do not exist. Furthermore, we present a sufficient and necessary condition for $(\ast)$-TGRS codes to be Hermitian self-dual, and then construct several new classes of Hermitian self-dual $(+)$-TGRS and $(\ast)$-TGRS codes.

A family of linear codes that are either non-GRS MDS codes or NMDS codes

Both maximum distance separable (MDS) codes that are not equivalent to generalized Reed-Solomon (GRS) codes (non-GRS MDS codes) and near MDS (NMDS) codes have nice applications in communication and storage systems. In this paper, we introduce and study a new family of linear codes involving their parameters, weight distributions, and self-orthogonal properties. We prove that such codes are either non-GRS MDS codes or NMDS codes, and hence, they can produce as many of the desired codes as possible. We also completely determine their weight distributions with the help of the solutions to some subset sum problems. A sufficient and necessary condition for such codes to be self-orthogonal is characterized. Based on this condition, we further deduce that there are no self-dual codes in this class of linear codes and explicitly construct two new classes of almost self-dual codes.

New record-breaking binary linear codes constructed from group codes

In this paper, we employ group rings and automorphism groups of binary linear codes to construct new record-breaking binary linear codes. We consider the semidirect product of abelian groups and cyclic groups and use these groups to construct linear codes. Finally, we obtain some linear codes which have better parameters than the code in \cite{bib5}. All the calculation results and corresponding data are listed in the paper or posted online.

New MDS codes of non-GRS type and NMDS codes

Maximum distance separable (MDS) and near maximum distance separable (NMDS) codes have been widely used in various fields such as communication systems, data storage, and quantum codes due to their algebraic properties and excellent error-correcting capabilities. This paper focuses on a specific class of linear codes and establishes necessary and sufficient conditions for them to be MDS or NMDS. Additionally, we employ the well-known Schur method to demonstrate that they are non-equivalent to generalized Reed-Solomon codes.

Galois self-orthogonal MDS codes with large dimensions

Let $q=p^m$ be a prime power, $e$ be an integer with $0\leq e\leq m-1$ and $s=\gcd(e,m)$. In this paper, for a vector $v$ and a $q$-ary linear code $C$, we give some necessary and sufficient conditions for the equivalent code $vC$ of $C$ and the extended code of $vC$ to be $e$-Galois self-orthogonal. From this, we directly obtain some necessary and sufficient conditions for (extended) generalized Reed-Solomon (GRS and EGRS) codes to be $e$-Galois self-orthogonal. Furthermore, for all possible $e$ satisfying $0\leq e\leq m-1$, we classify them into three cases (1) $\frac{m}{s}$ odd and $p$ even; (2) $\frac{m}{s}$ odd and $p$ odd; (3) $\frac{m}{s}$ even, and construct several new classes of $e$-Galois self-orthogonal maximum distance separable (MDS) codes. It is worth noting that our $e$-Galois self-orthogonal MDS codes can have dimensions greater than $\lfloor \frac{n+p^e-1}{p^e+1}\rfloor$, which are not covered by previously known ones. Moreover, by propagation rules, we obtain some new MDS codes with Galois hulls of arbitrary dimensions. As an application, many quantum codes can be obtained from these MDS codes with Galois hulls.

On general self-orthogonal matrix-product codes associated with Toeplitz matrices

In this paper, we present four constructions of {general} self-orthogonal matrix-product codes associated with Toeplitz matrices. The first one relies on the {dual} of a known {general} dual-containing matrix-product code; the second one is founded on {a specific family of} matrices, where we provide an efficient algorithm for generating them {on the basis of Toeplitz matrices} and {it has an interesting application in producing new non-singular by columns quasi-unitary matrices}; and the last two ones are based on the utilization of certain special Toeplitz matrices. Concrete examples and detailed comparisons are provided. As a byproduct, we also find an application of Toeplitz matrices, which is closely related to the constructions of quantum codes.

Three classes of propagation rules for generalized Reed-Solomon codes and their applications to EAQECCs

In this paper, we study the Hermitian hulls of generalized Reed-Solomon (GRS) codes over finite fields. For a given class of GRS codes, by extending the length, increasing the dimension, and extending the length and increasing the dimension at the same time, we obtain three classes of GRS codes with Hermitian hulls of arbitrary dimensions. Furthermore, based on some known $q^2$-ary Hermitian self-orthogonal GRS codes with dimension $q-1$, we obtain several classes of $q^2$-ary maximum distance separable (MDS) codes with Hermitian hulls of arbitrary dimensions. It is worth noting that the dimension of these MDS codes can be taken from $q$ to $\frac{n}{2}$, and the parameters of these MDS codes can be more flexible by propagation rules. As an application, we derive three new propagation rules for MDS entanglement-assisted quantum error correction codes (EAQECCs) constructed from GRS codes. Then, from the presently known GRS codes with Hermitian hulls, we can directly obtain many MDS EAQECCs with more flexible parameters. Finally, we present several new classes of (MDS) EAQECCs with flexible parameters, and the distance of these codes can be taken from $q+1$ to $\frac{n+2}{2}$.

Binary duadic codes and their related codes with a square-root-like lower bound

Binary cyclic codes have been a hot topic for many years, and significant progress has been made in the study of this types of codes. As is well known, it is hard to construct infinite families of binary cyclic codes [n, n+1/2] with good minimum distance. In this paper, by using the BCH bound on cyclic codes, one of the open problems proposed by Liu et al. about binary cyclic codes (Finite Field Appl 91:102270, 2023) is settled. Specially, we present several families of binary duadic codes with length 2^m-1 and dimension 2^(m-1), and the minimum distances have a square-root-like lower bound. As a by-product, the parameters of their dual codes and extended codes are provided, where the latter are self-dual and doubly-even.

On Galois self-orthogonal algebraic geometry codes

Galois self-orthogonal (SO) codes are generalizations of Euclidean and Hermitian SO codes. Algebraic geometry (AG) codes are the first known class of linear codes exceeding the Gilbert-Varshamov bound. Both of them have attracted much attention for their rich algebraic structures and wide applications in these years. In this paper, we consider them together and study Galois SO AG codes. A criterion for an AG code being Galois SO is presented. Based on this criterion, we construct several new classes of maximum distance separable (MDS) Galois SO AG codes from projective lines and several new classes of Galois SO AG codes from projective elliptic curves, hyper-elliptic curves and hermitian curves. In addition, we give an embedding method that allows us to obtain more MDS Galois SO codes from known MDS Galois SO AG codes.

Constructions of entanglement-assisted quantum MDS codes from generalized Reed-Solomon codes

By generalizing the stabilizer quantum error-correcting codes, entanglement-assisted quantum error-correcting (EAQEC) codes were introduced, which could be derived from any classical linear codes via the relaxation of self-orthogonality conditions with the aid of pre-shared entanglement between the sender and the receiver. In this paper, three classes of entanglement-assisted quantum error-correcting maximum-distance-separable (EAQMDS) codes are constructed through generalized Reed-Solomon codes. Under our constructions, the minimum distances of our EAQMDS codes are much larger than those of the known EAQMDS codes of the same lengths that consume the same number of ebits. Furthermore, some of the lengths of the EAQMDS codes are not divisors of $q^2-1$, which are completely new and unlike all those known lengths existed before.

New ternary self-orthogonal codes and related LCD codes from weakly regular plateaued functions

A linear code is said to be self-orthogonal if it is contained in its dual. Self-orthogonal codes are of interest because of their important applications, such as for constructing linear complementary dual (LCD) codes and quantum codes. In this paper, we construct several new families of ternary self-orthogonal codes by employing weakly regular plateaued functions. Their parameters and weight distributions are completely determined. Then we apply these self-orthogonal codes to construct several new families of ternary LCD codes. As a consequence, we obtain many (almost) optimal ternary self-orthogonal codes and LCD codes.

Symplectic self-orthogonal and LCD codes from the Plotkin sum construction

In this work, we propose two criteria for linear codes obtained from the Plotkin sum construction being symplectic self-orthogonal (SO) and linear complementary dual (LCD). As specific constructions, several classes of symplectic SO codes with good parameters including symplectic maximum distance separable codes are derived via $\ell$-intersection pairs of linear codes and generalized Reed-Muller codes. Also symplectic LCD codes are constructed from general linear codes. Furthermore, we obtain some binary symplectic LCD codes, which are equivalent to quaternary trace Hermitian additive complementary dual codes that outperform best-known quaternary Hermitian LCD codes reported in the literature. In addition, we prove that symplectic SO and LCD codes obtained in these ways are asymptotically good.

A Generalization of the Tang-Ding Binary Cyclic Codes

Cyclic codes are an interesting family of linear codes since they have efficient decoding algorithms and contain optimal codes as subfamilies. Constructing infinite families of cyclic codes with good parameters is important in both theory and practice. Recently, Tang and Ding [IEEE Trans. Inf. Theory, vol. 68, no. 12, pp. 7842--7849, 2022] proposed an infinite family of binary cyclic codes with good parameters. Shi et al. [arXiv:2309.12003v1, 2023] developed the binary Tang-Ding codes to the $4$-ary case. Inspired by these two works, we study $2^s$-ary Tang-Ding codes, where $s\geq 2$. Good lower bounds on the minimum distance of the $2^s$-ary Tang-Ding codes are presented. As a by-product, an infinite family of $2^s$-ary duadic codes with a square-root like lower bound is presented.

On $\ell$-MDS codes and a conjecture on infinite families of $1$-MDS codes

The class of $\ell$-maximum distance separable ($\ell$-MDS) codes {is a} generalization of maximum distance separable (MDS) codes {that} has attracted a lot of attention due to its applications in several areas such as secret sharing schemes, index coding problems, informed source coding problems, and combinatorial $t$-designs. In this paper, for $\ell=1$, we completely solve a conjecture recently proposed by Heng $et~al.$ (Discrete Mathematics, 346(10): 113538, 2023) and obtain infinite families of $1$-MDS codes with general dimensions holding $2$-designs. These later codes are also been proven to be optimal locally recoverable codes. For general {positive integers} $\ell$ and $\ell'$, we construct new $\ell$-MDS codes from known $\ell'$-MDS codes via some classical propagation rules involving the extended, expurgated, and $(u,u+v)$ constructions. Finally, we study some general results including characterization, weight distributions, and bounds on maximum lengths of $\ell$-MDS codes, which generalize, simplify, or improve some known results in the literature.
