AutoMixQ: Self-Adjusting Quantization for High Performance Memory-Efficient Fine-Tuning

Fine-tuning large language models (LLMs) under resource constraints is a significant challenge in deep learning. Low-Rank Adaptation (LoRA), pruning, and quantization are all effective methods for improving resource efficiency. However, combining them directly often results in suboptimal performance, especially with uniform quantization across all model layers. This is due to the complex, uneven interlayer relationships introduced by pruning, necessitating more refined quantization strategies. To address this, we propose AutoMixQ, an end-to-end optimization framework that selects optimal quantization configurations for each LLM layer. AutoMixQ leverages lightweight performance models to guide the selection process, significantly reducing time and computational resources compared to exhaustive search methods. By incorporating Pareto optimality, AutoMixQ balances memory usage and performance, approaching the upper bounds of model capability under strict resource constraints. Our experiments on widely used benchmarks show that AutoMixQ reduces memory consumption while achieving superior performance. For example, at a 30\% pruning rate in LLaMA-7B, AutoMixQ achieved 66.21\% on BoolQ compared to 62.45\% for LoRA and 58.96\% for LoftQ, while reducing memory consumption by 35.5\% compared to LoRA and 27.5\% compared to LoftQ.

New Kids in Town. Sextans~II: a new stellar system in the outskirts of the Milky Way

We report on the discovery of a significant and compact over-density of old and metal-poor stars in the KiDS survey (data release 4). The discovery is confirmed by deeper HSC-SSC data revealing the old Main Sequence Turn-Off of a stellar system located at a distance from the sun of $D_{\sun}=145^{+14}_{-13}$~kpc in the direction of the Sextans constellation. The system has absolute integrated magnitude ($M_V=-3.9^{+0.4}_{-0.3}$), half-light radius ($r_h=193^{+61}_{-46}$~pc), and ellipticity ($e=0.46^{+0.11}_{-0.15}$) typical of Ultra Faint Dwarf galaxies (UFDs). The central surface brightness is near the lower limits of known local dwarf galaxies of similar integrated luminosity, as expected for stellar systems that escaped detection until now. The distance of the newly found system suggests that it is likely a satellite of our own Milky Way, consequently, we tentatively baptise it Sextans~II (KiDS-UFD-1).

Preconditioners and Their Analyses for Edge Element Saddle-point Systems Arising from Time-harmonic Maxwell Equations

We shall propose and analyze some new preconditioners for the saddle-point systems arising from the edge element discretization of the time-harmonic Maxwell equations in three dimensions. We will first consider the saddle-point systems with vanishing wave number, for which we present an important relation between the solutions of the singular curl-curl system and the non-singular saddle-point system, then demonstrate that the saddle-point system can be efficiently solved by the Hiptmair-Xu solver. For the saddle-point systems with non-vanishing wave numbers, we will show that the PCG with a new preconditioner can apply for the non-singular system when wave numbers are small, while the methods like preconditioned MINRES may apply for some existing and new preconditioners when wave numbers are large. The spectral behaviors of the resulting preconditioned systems for the existing and new preconditioners are analyzed and compared, and numerical experiments are presented to demonstrate and compare the efficiencies of these preconditioners.
