Range-Max Enhanced Ultra-Wideband Micro-Doppler Signatures of Behind Wall Indoor Human Activities

Penetrating detection and recognition of behind wall indoor human activities has drawn great attentions from social security and emergency service department in recent years since intelligent surveillance aforehand could avail the proper decision making before operations being carried out. However, due to the influence of the wall effects, the obtained micro-Doppler signatures would be severely degenerated by strong near zero-frequency DC components, which would inevitably smear the detailed characteristic features of different behind wall motions in time-frequency (TF) map and further hinder the motion recognition and classification. In this paper, an ultra-wideband (UWB) radar system is first employed to probe through the opaque wall to detect the behind wall motions, which often span a certain number of range bin cells. By employing such a system, a high resolution range map can be obtained, in which the embedded rich range information is expected to be fully exploited to improve the subsequent recognition and classification performance. Secondly, a high-pass filter is applied to remove the effect of the wall in the raw range map. Then, with the aim of enhancing the characteristic features of different behind wall motions in TF maps, a novel range-max enhancement strategy is proposed to extract the most significant micro-Doppler feature of each TF cell along all range bins for a specific motion. Lastly, the effectiveness of the proposed micro-Doppler signature enhancement strategy is investigated by means of onsite experiments and comparative classification. Both the feature enhanced TF maps and classification results show that the proposed approach outperforms other state-of-art Short-Time Fourier Transform (STFT) based TF feature extraction methods.

RPCA-Based High Resolution Through-the-Wall Human Motion Detection and Classification

Radar based assisted living has received great amount of research interest in recent years. By employing the micro-Doppler features of indoor human motions, accurate recognition and classification of different types of movements become possible. Whereas, most of the existing works are focused only on free space detection, the literature on detection and recognition of human motions in through-the-wall scenarios is still in its infancy. As can be anticipated, the wall media and indoor static non-human targets would cause clutters and significantly corrupt the motion information of human subjects behind wall. However, no relevant work is reported to effectively handle this problem. In the present work, we aim to fill the gap and propose to use a low center-frequency ultra-wideband (UWB) radar system to probe the behind wall scene. Then, a Robust Principal Component Analysis (RPCA) based subspace decomposition technique, as its first reported implementation, is employed not only to remove the stationary clutters in raw range slow-time map but also to mitigate the multipath effects in the time-frequency map. Onsite experiments of detecting human motions behind a single layer of concrete wall is carried out to investigate the performance of the technique. Lastly, a two dimensional (2D)-PCA algorithm-based motion classification is provided to further verify the effectiveness of the proposed technique. Classification result shows that an enhanced recognition capability can be achieved using the proposed technique in detection and classification of indoor human motions.

Quantum Kinetic Theory of Spin Polarization of Massive Quarks in Perturbative QCD: Leading Log

We present the quantum kinetic equation for spin polarization of massive quarks in leading log order of perturbative QCD, which describes time evolution of the spin density matrix in momentum space of a massive quark interacting with a background QCD plasma. We find that the time evolution operator of the spin density matrix, or the quantum kinetic collision terms, are universally of order $α_s^2\log(1/α_s)$ in terms of the QCD coupling constant $α_s=g^2/(4π)$. Our quantum kinetic equation is valid for an arbitrary quark mass $m\gg m_D\sim gT$, where $m_D$ is the Debye mass, and can be used to study relaxation dynamics of spin polarization of massive quarks in perturbative QCD regime.

2-D Coherence Factor for Sidelobe and Ghost Suppressions in Radar Imaging

The coherence factor (CF) is defined as the ratio of coherent power to incoherent power received by the radar aperture. The incoherent power is computed by the multi-antenna receiver based on only the spatial variable. In this respect, it is a one-dimensional (1-D) CF, and thereby the image sidelobes in down-range cannot be effectively suppressed. We propose a two-dimensional (2-D) CF by supplementing the 1-D CF by an incoherent sum dealing with the frequency dimension. In essence, we employ both spatial diversity and frequency diversity which, respectively, enhance imaging quality in cross range and range. Simulations and experimental results are provided to demonstrate the performance advantages of the proposed approach.

Radar Imaging by Sparse Optimization Incorporating MRF Clustering Prior

Recent progress in compressive sensing states the importance of exploiting intrinsic structures in sparse signal reconstruction. In this letter, we propose a Markov random field (MRF) prior in conjunction with fast iterative shrinkagethresholding algorithm (FISTA) for image reconstruction. The MRF prior is used to represent the support of sparse signals with clustered nonzero coefficients. The proposed approach is applied to the inverse synthetic aperture radar (ISAR) imaging problem. Simulations and experimental results are provided to demonstrate the performance advantages of this approach in comparison with the standard FISTA and existing MRF-based methods.

Relaxation Times for Chiral Transport Phenomena and Spin Polarization in Strongly Coupled Plasma

We compute the dynamical relaxation times for chiral transport phenomena in strongly coupled regime using the AdS/CFT correspondence. These relaxation times can be a useful proxy for the dynamical time scale for achieving equilibrium spin-polarization of quasi-particles in the presence of magnetic field and fluid vorticity. We identify the Kubo relations for these relaxation times and clarify some previous issues regarding time-dependence of the Chiral Vortical Effect. We study the consequences of imposing time-reversal invariance on parity-odd thermal noise fluctuations that are related to chiral transport coefficients by the fluctuation-dissipation relation. We find that time-reversal invariance dictates the equality between some of the chiral transport coefficients as well as their relaxation times.

Compressive Sensing Imaging of 3-D Object by a Holographic Algorithm

Existing three-dimensional (3-D) compressive sensing-based millimeter-wave (MMW) imaging methods require a large-scale storage of the sensing matrix and immense computations owing to the high dimension matrix-vector model employed in the optimization. To overcome this shortcoming, we propose an efficient compressive sensing (CS) method based on a holographic algorithm for near-field 3-D MMW imaging. An interpolation-free holographic imaging algorithm is developed and used as a sensing operator, in lieu of the nominal sensing matrix typically used in the CS iterative optimization procedure. In so doing, the problem induced by the large-scale sensing matrix is avoided. With no interpolations required, both the computational speed and the image quality can be improved. Simulation and experimental results are provided to demonstrate the performance of the proposed method in comparison with those of the Omega-K based CS and the traditional Fourier-based imaging techniques.

Shear Viscosity of Quark-Gluon Plasma in Weak Magnetic Field in Perturbative QCD: Leading Log

We compute the shear viscosity of two-flavor QCD plasma in an external magnetic field in perturbative QCD at leading log order, assuming that the magnetic field is weak or soft: $eB\sim g^4\log(1/g)T^2$. We show that the shear viscosity takes a form $η=\barη(\bar B)T^3/(g^4\log(1/g))$ with a dimensionless function $\barη(\bar B)$ in terms of a dimensionless variable $\bar B=(eB)/(g^4\log(1/g)T^2)$. The variable $\bar B$ corresponds to the relative strength of the effect of cyclotron motions compared to the QCD collisions: $\bar B\sim l_{mfp}/l_{cyclo}$. We provide a full numerical result for the scaled shear viscosity $\barη(\bar B)$.

Longitudinal Conductivity in Strong Magnetic Field in Perturbative QCD: Complete Leading Order

We compute the longitudinal electrical conductivity in the presence of strong background magnetic field in complete leading order of perturbative QCD, based on the assumed hierarchy of scales $α_s eB\ll (m_q^2,T^2)\ll eB$. We formulate an effective kinetic theory of lowest Landau level quarks with the leading order QCD collision term arising from 1-to-2 processes that become possible due to 1+1 dimensional Landau level kinematics. In small $m_q/T\ll 1$ regime, the longitudinal conductivity behaves as $σ_{zz}\sim e^2(eB)T/(α_s m_q^2\log(m_q/T))$, where the quark mass dependence can be understood from the chiral anomaly with the axial charge relaxation provided by a finite quark mass $m_q$. We also present parametric estimates for the longitudinal and transverse "color conductivities" in the presence of strong magnetic field, by computing dominant damping rates for quarks and gluons that are responsible for color charge transportation. We observe that the longitudinal color conductivity is enhanced by strong magnetic field, which implies that the sphaleron transition rate in perturbative QCD is suppressed by strong magnetic field due to the enhanced Lenz's law in color field dynamics.

Jet quenching parameter of quark-gluon plasma in strong magnetic field: Perturbative QCD and AdS/CFT correspondence

We compute the jet quenching parameter $\hat q$ of QCD plasma in the presence of strong magnetic field in both weakly and strongly coupled regimes. In weakly coupled regime, we compute $\hat q$ in perturbative QCD at complete leading order (that is, leading log as well as the constant under the log) in QCD coupling constant $α_s$, assuming the hierarchy of scales $α_s eB\ll T^2\ll eB$. We consider two cases of jet orientations with respect to the magnetic field: 1) the case of jet moving parallel to the magnetic field, 2) the case jet moving perpendicular to the magnetic field. In the former case, we find $\hat q\sim α_s^2 (eB)T\log(1/α_s)$, while in the latter we have $\hat q\sim α_s^2 (eB)T\log(T^2/α_seB)$. In both cases, this leading order result arises from the scatterings with thermally populated lowest Landau level quarks. In strongly coupled regime described by AdS/CFT correspondence, we find $\hat q\sim \sqrtλ(eB)T$ or $\hat q\sim\sqrtλ\sqrt{eB}T^2$ in the same hierarchy of $T^2\ll eB$ depending on whether the jet is moving parallel or perpendicular to the magnetic field, respectively, which indicates a universal dependence of $\hat q$ on $(eB)T$ in both regimes for the parallel case, the origin of which should be the transverse density of lowest Landau level states proportional to $eB$. Finally, the asymmetric transverse momentum diffusion in the case of jet moving perpendicular to the magnetic field may give an interesting azimuthal asymmetry of the gluon Bremsstrahlung spectrum in the BDMPS-Z formalism.
