Emergent Polar Metal Phase in a Van der Waals Mott Magnet

We report the emergence of a two-dimensional (2D) polar metal phase in van der Waals compound FePSe$_3$ under moderate pressures. This layered material is a Mott insulator with antiferromagnetic order under ambient conditions. We show that FePSe$_3$ uniquely allows tuning a 2D correlated insulator into an exotic metal state where a loss of inversion symmetry leads to periodic polar displacements of ions, within a conducting phase - a polar metal. Our combined synchrotron and neutron diffraction data allow us to present a long-sought, unambiguous high-pressure structural model and show the polar displacements of this new phase. We also observe the suppression of magnetic ordering at the insulator-to-metal transition correspondent with this structural change. Our work outlines a comprehensive temperature-pressure phase diagram of FePSe$_3$, combining detailed structural, magnetic and transport data. The high-pressure phase exhibits activated semiconductor behavior at high temperatures, a $T^2$-dependence in its resistivity at lower temperatures - despite the conditions required for a `good metal' Fermi-Liquid description not being met in this case - and a low-temperature resistivity upturn which is suppressed as the system is tuned away from the concomitant transitions. The realisation of a tunable 2D polar metal state in FePSe$_3$ due to the loss of its inversion symmetry combined with pressure-induced metallicity offers a promising new platform to investigate this exotic phase at accessible pressures.

Dome-like pressure-temperature phase diagram of the cooperative Jahn--Teller distortion in NaNiO$_2$

NaNiO$_2$ is a Ni$^{3+}$-containing layered material consisting of alternating triangular networks of Ni and Na cations, separated by octahedrally-coordinated O anions. At ambient pressure, it features a collinear Jahn--Teller distortion below $T^\mathrm{JT}_\mathrm{onset}\approx480$ K, which disappears in a first-order transition on heating to $T^\mathrm{JT}_\mathrm{end}\approx500$ K, corresponding to the increase in symmetry from monoclinic to rhombohedral. It was previously studied by variable-pressure neutron diffraction [ACS Inorganic Chemistry 61.10 (2022): 4312-4321] and found to exhibit an increasing $T^\mathrm{JT}_\mathrm{onset}$ with pressure up to ~5 GPa. In this work, powdered NaNiO$_2$ was studied via variable-pressure synchrotron x-ray diffraction up to pressures of ~67 GPa at 294 K and 403 K. Suppression of the collinear Jahn--Teller ordering is observed via the emergence of a high-symmetry rhombohedral phase, with the onset pressure occurring at ~18 GPa at both studied temperatures. Further, a discontinuous decrease in unit cell volume is observed on transitioning from the monoclinic to the rhombohedral phase. These results taken together suggest that in the vicinity of the transition, application of pressure causes the Jahn--Teller transition temperature, $T^\mathrm{JT}_\mathrm{onset}$, to decrease rapidly. We conclude that the pressure-temperature phase diagram of the cooperative Jahn--Teller distortion in NaNiO$_2$ is dome-like.

Magnetoelastic coupling in the stretched diamond lattice of TbTaO$_4$

The magnetic structure of diamond-like lattice has been studied extensively in terms of the magnetic frustration. Here we report the distortion of stretched diamond lattice of Tb$^{3+}$ (4$f^8$) in M-TbTaO$_4$ on application of a magnetic field. We have investigated the structural and magnetic properties of M phase terbium tantalate M-TbTaO$_4$ as a function of temperature and magnetic field using magnetometry and powder neutron diffraction. Sharp $λ$-shape transitions in $d(χT)/dT$, $dM/dH$ and specific heat data confirm the previously reported three-dimensional (3D) antiferromagnetic ordering at $T_N \approx 2.25$ K. On application of a magnetic field the Néel temperature is found to decrease and variable field neutron diffraction experiments below $T_N$ at 1.6 K show an increase in both the bond and angle distortion of the stretched diamond lattice with magnetic field, indicating a potential magneto-elastic coupling effect. By combining our magnetometry, heat capacity and neutron diffraction results we generate a magnetic phase diagram for M-TbTaO$_4$ as a function of temperature and field.

Learning Multiscale Consistency for Self-supervised Electron Microscopy Instance Segmentation

Instance segmentation in electron microscopy (EM) volumes is tough due to complex shapes and sparse annotations. Self-supervised learning helps but still struggles with intricate visual patterns in EM. To address this, we propose a pretraining framework that enhances multiscale consistency in EM volumes. Our approach leverages a Siamese network architecture, integrating both strong and weak data augmentations to effectively extract multiscale features. We uphold voxel-level coherence by reconstructing the original input data from these augmented instances. Furthermore, we incorporate cross-attention mechanisms to facilitate fine-grained feature alignment between these augmentations. Finally, we apply contrastive learning techniques across a feature pyramid, allowing us to distill distinctive representations spanning various scales. After pretraining on four large-scale EM datasets, our framework significantly improves downstream tasks like neuron and mitochondria segmentation, especially with limited finetuning data. It effectively captures voxel and feature consistency, showing promise for learning transferable representations for EM analysis.

Pressure-induced transitions in FePS$_3$: Structural, magnetic and electronic properties

FePS$_3$ is a prototype van der Waals layered antiferromagnet and a Mott insulator under ambient conditions, which has been recently reported to go through a pressure-induced dimensionality crossover and an insulator-to-metal transition. These transitions also lead to the appearance of a novel magnetic metallic state. To further understand these emergent structural and physical properties, we have performed a first-principles study using van der Waals and Hubbard $U$ corrected density functional theory including a random structure search. Our computational study attempts to interpret the experimental coexistence of the low- and intermediate-pressure phases and we predict a novel high-pressure phase with distinctive dimensionality and different possible origins of metallicity.

Comparative structural evolution under pressure of powder and single crystals of the layered antiferromagnet FePS$_3$

The layered antiferromagnet FePS$_3$ has been shown to undergo a structural transition under pressure linked to an insulator-metal transition, with two incompatible models previously proposed for the highest-pressure structure. We present a study of the high-pressure crystal structures of FePS$_3$ using both single-crystal and powder x-ray diffraction. We show that the highest pressure transition involves a collapse of the inter-planar spacing of this material, along with an increase in symmetry from a monoclinic to a trigonal structure, to the exclusion of other models. The extent of this volume collapse is shown to be sensitive to the presence of a helium pressure medium in the sample environment, indicating that consideration of such experimental factors is important for understanding high-pressure behaviours in this material.
