MIMO Gaussian Broadcast Channels with Confidential and Common Messages

This paper considers the problem of secret communication over a two-receiver multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) Gaussian broadcast channel. The transmitter has two independent, confidential messages and a common message. Each of the confidential messages is intended for one of the receivers but needs to be kept perfectly secret from the other, and the common message is intended for both receivers. It is shown that a natural scheme that combines secret dirty-paper coding with Gaussian superposition coding achieves the secrecy capacity region. To prove this result, a channel-enhancement approach and an extremal entropy inequality of Weingarten et al. are used.

On broadcast channels with binary inputs and symmetric outputs

We study the capacity regions of broadcast channels with binary inputs and symmetric outputs. We study the partial order induced by the more capable ordering of broadcast channels for channels belonging to this class. This study leads to some surprising connections regarding various notions of dominance of receivers. The results here also help us isolate some classes of symmetric channels where the best known inner and outer bounds differ.

Bounds on the Capacity of the Relay Channel with Noncausal State Information at Source

We consider a three-terminal state-dependent relay channel with the channel state available non-causally at only the source. Such a model may be of interest for node cooperation in the framework of cognition, i.e., collaborative signal transmission involving cognitive and non-cognitive radios. We study the capacity of this communication model. One principal problem in this setup is caused by the relay's not knowing the channel state. In the discrete memoryless (DM) case, we establish lower bounds on channel capacity. For the Gaussian case, we derive lower and upper bounds on the channel capacity. The upper bound is strictly better than the cut-set upper bound. We show that one of the developed lower bounds comes close to the upper bound, asymptotically, for certain ranges of rates.

Scaling Laws and Techniques in Decentralized Processing of Interfered Gaussian Channels

The scaling laws of the achievable communication rates and the corresponding upper bounds of distributed reception in the presence of an interfering signal are investigated. The scheme includes one transmitter communicating to a remote destination via two relays, which forward messages to the remote destination through reliable links with finite capacities. The relays receive the transmission along with some unknown interference. We focus on three common settings for distributed reception, wherein the scaling laws of the capacity (the pre-log as the power of the transmitter and the interference are taken to infinity) are completely characterized. It is shown in most cases that in order to overcome the interference, a definite amount of information about the interference needs to be forwarded along with the desired message, to the destination. It is exemplified in one scenario that the cut-set upper bound is strictly loose. The results are derived using the cut-set along with a new bounding technique, which relies on multi letter expressions. Furthermore, lattices are found to be a useful communication technique in this setting, and are used to characterize the scaling laws of achievable rates.

On Degrees of Freedom Region of MIMO Networks without CSIT

In this paper, we study the effect of the absence of channel knowledge for multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) networks. Specifically, we assume perfect channel state information at the receivers, no channel state information at the transmitter(s), and independent identically distributed (i.i.d.) Rayleigh fading across antennas, users and time slots. We provide the characterization of the degrees of freedom (DoF) region for a 2-user MIMO broadcast channel. We then provide a DoF region outer bound for a 2-user MIMO interference channel. This bound is shown to be tight for all possible combinations of the number of antennas at each node except for one case. As a byproduct of this analysis we point out the potential of interference alignment in the 2-user MIMO interference channel with no CSIT.

Throughput of Cellular Uplink with Dynamic User Activity and Cooperative Base-Stations

The throughput of a linear cellular uplink with a random number of users, different power control schemes, and cooperative base stations is considered in the large system limit where the number of cells is large for non fading Gaussian channels. The analysis is facilitated by establishing an analogy between the cellular channel per-cell throughput with joint multi-cell processing (MCP), and the rate of a deterministic inter-symbol interference (ISI) channel with flat fading. It is shown that, under certain conditions, the dynamics of cellular systems (i.e., a random number of users coupled with a given power control scheme) can be interpreted, as far as the uplink throughput is concerned, as the flat fading process of the equivalent ISI channel. The results are used to demonstrate the benefits of MCP over the conventional single cell processing approach as a function of various system parameters in the presence of random user activity.

Secured Communication over Frequency-Selective Fading Channels: a practical Vandermonde precoding

In this paper, we study the frequency-selective broadcast channel with confidential messages (BCC) in which the transmitter sends a confidential message to receiver 1 and a common message to receivers 1 and 2. In the case of a block transmission of N symbols followed by a guard interval of L symbols, the frequency-selective channel can be modeled as a N * (N+L) Toeplitz matrix. For this special type of multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) channels, we propose a practical Vandermonde precoding that consists of projecting the confidential messages in the null space of the channel seen by receiver 2 while superposing the common message. For this scheme, we provide the achievable rate region, i.e. the rate-tuple of the common and confidential messages, and characterize the optimal covariance inputs for some special cases of interest. It is proved that the proposed scheme achieves the optimal degree of freedom (d.o.f) region. More specifically, it enables to send l <= L confidential messages and N-l common messages simultaneously over a block of N+L symbols. Interestingly, the proposed scheme can be applied to secured multiuser scenarios such as the K+1-user frequency-selective BCC with K confidential messages and the two-user frequency-selective BCC with two confidential messages. For each scenario, we provide the achievable secrecy degree of freedom (s.d.o.f.) region of the corresponding frequency-selective BCC and prove the optimality of the Vandermonde precoding. One of the appealing features of the proposed scheme is that it does not require any specific secrecy encoding technique but can be applied on top of any existing powerful encoding schemes.

On the Compound MIMO Broadcast Channels with Confidential Messages

We study the compound multi-input multi-output (MIMO) broadcast channel with confidential messages (BCC), where one transmitter sends a common message to two receivers and two confidential messages respectively to each receiver. The channel state may take one of a finite set of states, and the transmitter knows the state set but does not know the realization of the state. We study achievable rates with perfect secrecy in the high SNR regime by characterizing an achievable secrecy degree of freedom (s.d.o.f.) region for two models, the Gaussian MIMO-BCC and the ergodic fading multi-input single-output (MISO)-BCC without a common message. We show that by exploiting an additional temporal dimension due to state variation in the ergodic fading model, the achievable s.d.o.f. region can be significantly improved compared to the Gaussian model with a constant state, although at the price of a larger delay.

Multiple-Input Multiple-Output Gaussian Broadcast Channels with Confidential Messages

This paper considers the problem of secret communication over a two-receiver multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) Gaussian broadcast channel. The transmitter has two independent messages, each of which is intended for one of the receivers but needs to be kept asymptotically perfectly secret from the other. It is shown that, surprisingly, under a matrix power constraint both messages can be simultaneously transmitted at their respective maximal secrecy rates. To prove this result, the MIMO Gaussian wiretap channel is revisited and a new characterization of its secrecy capacity is provided via a new coding scheme that uses artificial noise and random binning.

A Vector Generalization of Costa's Entropy-Power Inequality with Applications

This paper considers an entropy-power inequality (EPI) of Costa and presents a natural vector generalization with a real positive semidefinite matrix parameter. This new inequality is proved using a perturbation approach via a fundamental relationship between the derivative of mutual information and the minimum mean-square error (MMSE) estimate in linear vector Gaussian channels. As an application, a new extremal entropy inequality is derived from the generalized Costa EPI and then used to establish the secrecy capacity regions of the degraded vector Gaussian broadcast channel with layered confidential messages.

Multiple Multicasts with the Help of a Relay

The problem of simultaneous multicasting of multiple messages with the help of a relay terminal is considered. In particular, a model is studied in which a relay station simultaneously assists two transmitters in multicasting their independent messages to two receivers. The relay may also have an independent message of its own to multicast. As a first step to address this general model, referred to as the compound multiple access channel with a relay (cMACr), the capacity region of the multiple access channel with a "cognitive" relay is characterized, including the cases of partial and rate-limited cognition. Then, achievable rate regions for the cMACr model are presented based on decode-and-forward (DF) and compress-and-forward (CF) relaying strategies. Moreover, an outer bound is derived for the special case, called the cMACr without cross-reception, in which each transmitter has a direct link to one of the receivers while the connection to the other receiver is enabled only through the relay terminal. The capacity region is characterized for a binary modulo additive cMACr without cross-reception, showing the optimality of binary linear block codes, thus highlighting the benefits of physical layer network coding and structured codes. Results are extended to the Gaussian channel model as well, providing achievable rate regions for DF and CF, as well as for a structured code design based on lattice codes. It is shown that the performance with lattice codes approaches the upper bound for increasing power, surpassing the rates achieved by the considered random coding-based techniques.

Statistical Physics of Signal Estimation in Gaussian Noise: Theory and Examples of Phase Transitions

We consider the problem of signal estimation (denoising) from a statistical mechanical perspective, using a relationship between the minimum mean square error (MMSE), of estimating a signal, and the mutual information between this signal and its noisy version. The paper consists of essentially two parts. In the first, we derive several statistical-mechanical relationships between a few important quantities in this problem area, such as the MMSE, the differential entropy, the Fisher information, the free energy, and a generalized notion of temperature. We also draw analogies and differences between certain relations pertaining to the estimation problem and the parallel relations in thermodynamics and statistical physics. In the second part of the paper, we provide several application examples, where we demonstrate how certain analysis tools that are customary in statistical physics, prove useful in the analysis of the MMSE. In most of these examples, the corresponding statistical-mechanical systems turn out to consist of strong interactions that cause phase transitions, which in turn are reflected as irregularities and discontinuities (similar to threshold effects) in the behavior of the MMSE.

The Capacity Region of the Cognitive Z-interference Channel with One Noiseless Component

We study the discrete memoryless Z-interference channel (ZIC) where the transmitter of the pair that suffers from interference is cognitive. We first provide upper and lower bounds on the capacity of this channel. We then show that, when the channel of the transmitter-receiver pair that does not face interference is noiseless, the two bounds coincide and therefore yield the capacity region. The obtained results imply that, unlike in the Gaussian cognitive ZIC, in the considered channel superposition encoding at the non-cognitive transmitter as well as Gel'fand-Pinsker encoding at the cognitive transmitter are needed in order to minimize the impact of interference. As a byproduct of the obtained capacity region, we obtain the capacity result for a generalized Gel'fand-Pinsker problem.

A Layered Lattice Coding Scheme for a Class of Three User Gaussian Interference Channels

The paper studies a class of three user Gaussian interference channels. A new layered lattice coding scheme is introduced as a transmission strategy. The use of lattice codes allows for an "alignment" of the interference observed at each receiver. The layered lattice coding is shown to achieve more than one degree of freedom for a class of interference channels and also achieves rates which are better than the rates obtained using the Han-Kobayashi coding scheme.

On Information Rates of the Fading Wyner Cellular Model via the Thouless Formula for the Strip

We apply the theory of random Schrödinger operators to the analysis of multi-users communication channels similar to the Wyner model, that are characterized by short-range intra-cell broadcasting. With $H$ the channel transfer matrix, $HH^\dagger$ is a narrow-band matrix and in many aspects is similar to a random Schrödinger operator. We relate the per-cell sum-rate capacity of the channel to the integrated density of states of a random Schrödinger operator; the latter is related to the top Lyapunov exponent of a random sequence of matrices via a version of the Thouless formula. Unlike related results in classical random matrix theory, limiting results do depend on the underlying fading distributions. We also derive several bounds on the limiting per-cell sum-rate capacity, some based on the theory of random Schrödinger operators, and some derived from information theoretical considerations. Finally, we get explicit results in the high-SNR regime for some particular cases.

On Certain Large Random Hermitian Jacobi Matrices with Applications to Wireless Communications

In this paper we study the spectrum of certain large random Hermitian Jacobi matrices. These matrices are known to describe certain communication setups. In particular we are interested in an uplink cellular channel which models mobile users experiencing a soft-handoff situation under joint multicell decoding. Considering rather general fading statistics we provide a closed form expression for the per-cell sum-rate of this channel in high-SNR, when an intra-cell TDMA protocol is employed. Since the matrices of interest are tridiagonal, their eigenvectors can be considered as sequences with second order linear recurrence. Therefore, the problem is reduced to the study of the exponential growth of products of two by two matrices. For the case where $K$ users are simultaneously active in each cell, we obtain a series of lower and upper bound on the high-SNR power offset of the per-cell sum-rate, which are considerably tighter than previously known bounds.

Uplink Macro Diversity of Limited Backhaul Cellular Network

In this work new achievable rates are derived, for the uplink channel of a cellular network with joint multicell processing, where unlike previous results, the ideal backhaul network has finite capacity per-cell. Namely, the cell sites are linked to the central joint processor via lossless links with finite capacity. The cellular network is abstracted by symmetric models, which render analytical treatment plausible. For this idealistic model family, achievable rates are presented for cell-sites that use compress-and-forward schemes combined with local decoding, for both Gaussian and fading channels. The rates are given in closed form for the classical Wyner model and the soft-handover model. These rates are then demonstrated to be rather close to the optimal unlimited backhaul joint processing rates, already for modest backhaul capacities, supporting the potential gain offered by the joint multicell processing approach. Particular attention is also given to the low-SNR characterization of these rates through which the effect of the limited backhaul network is explicitly revealed. In addition, the rate at which the backhaul capacity should scale in order to maintain the original high-SNR characterization of an unlimited backhaul capacity system is found.
