Inter-Tenant Cooperative Reception for C-RAN Systems With Spectrum Pooling

This work studies the uplink of a multi-tenant cloud radio access network (C-RAN) system with spectrum pooling. In the system, each operator has a cloud processor (CP) connected to a set of proprietary radio units (RUs) through finite-capacity fronthaul links. The uplink spectrum is divided into private and shared subbands, and all the user equipments (UEs) of the participating operators can simultaneously transmit signals on the shared subband. To mitigate inter-operator interference on the shared subband, the CPs of the participating operators can exchange compressed uplink baseband signals on finite-capacity backhaul links. This work tackles the problem of jointly optimizing bandwidth allocation, transmit power control and fronthaul compression strategies. In the optimization, we impose that the inter-operator privacy loss be limited by a given threshold value. An iterative algorithm is proposed to find a suboptimal solution based on the matrix fractional programming approach. Numerical results validate the advantages of the proposed optimized spectrum pooling scheme.

Robust Baseband Compression Against Congestion in Packet-Based Fronthaul Networks Using Multiple Description Coding

In modern implementations of Cloud Radio Access Network (C-RAN), the fronthaul transport network will often be packet-based and it will have a multi-hop architecture built with general-purpose switches using network function virtualization (NFV) and software-defined networking (SDN). This paper studies the joint design of uplink radio and fronthaul transmission strategies for a C-RAN with a packet-based fronthaul network. To make an efficient use of multiple routes that carry fronthaul packets from remote radio heads (RRHs) to cloud, as an alternative to more conventional packet-based multiroute reception or coding, a multiple description coding (MDC) strategy is introduced that operates directly at the level of baseband signals. MDC ensures an improved quality of the signal received at the cloud in conditions of low network congestion, i.e., when more fronthaul packets are received within a tolerated deadline. The advantages of the proposed MDC approach as compared to the traditional path diversity scheme are validated via extensive numerical results.

Information-Theoretic Analysis of D2D-Aided Pipelined Content Delivery in Fog-RAN

In a Fog-Radio Access Network (F-RAN), edge caching and fronthaul connectivity to a cloud processor are utilized for the purpose of content delivery. Additional Device-to-Device (D2D) communication capabilities can support the operation of an F-RAN by alleviating fronthaul and cloud processing load, and reducing the delivery time. In this work, basic limits on the normalized delivery time (NDT) metric, which captures the high signal-to-noise ratio worst-case latency for delivering any requested content to the users, are derived. Assuming proactive offline caching, out-of-band D2D communication, and an F-RAN with two edge nodes and two users, an information-theoretically optimal caching and delivery strategy is presented. Unlike prior work, the NDT performance is studied under pipelined transmission, whereby the edge nodes transmit on the wireless channel while simultaneously receiving messages over the fronthaul links, and the users transmit messages over the D2D links while at the same time receiving on the wireless channel. Insights are provided on the regimes in which D2D communication is beneficial, and the maximum improvement to the latency is characterized.

Beyond Max-SNR: Joint Encoding for Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces

A communication link aided by a Reconfigurable Intelligent Surface (RIS) is studied, in which the transmitter can control the state of the RIS via a finite-rate control link. Prior work mostly assumed a fixed RIS configuration irrespective of the transmitted information. In contrast, this work derives information-theoretic limits, and demonstrates that the capacity is achieved by a scheme that jointly encodes information in the transmitted signal as well as in the RIS configuration. In addition, a novel signaling strategy based on layered encoding is proposed that enables practical successive cancellation-type decoding at the receiver. Numerical experiments demonstrate that the standard max-SNR scheme that fixes the configuration of the RIS as to maximize the Signal-to-Noise Ratio (SNR) at the receiver is strictly suboptimal, and is outperformed by the proposed strategies at all practical SNR levels.

The Capacity Achieving Distribution for the Amplitude Constrained Additive Gaussian Channel: An Upper Bound on the Number of Mass Points

This paper studies an $n$-dimensional additive Gaussian noise channel with a peak-power-constrained input. It is well known that, in this case, when $n=1$ the capacity-achieving input distribution is discrete with finitely many mass points, and when $n>1$ the capacity-achieving input distribution is supported on finitely many concentric shells. However, due to the previous proof technique, neither the exact number of mass points/shells of the optimal input distribution nor a bound on it was available. This paper provides an alternative proof of the finiteness of the number mass points/shells of the capacity-achieving input distribution and produces the first firm bounds on the number of mass points and shells, paving an alternative way for approaching many such problems. Roughly, the paper consists of three parts. The first part considers the case of $n=1$. The first result, in this part, shows that the number of mass points in the capacity-achieving input distribution is within a factor of two from the downward shifted capacity-achieving output probability density function (pdf). The second result, by showing a bound on the number of zeros of the downward shifted capacity-achieving output pdf, provides a first firm upper on the number of mass points. Specifically, it is shown that the number of mass points is given by $O(\mathsf{A}^2)$ where $\mathsf{A}$ is the constraint on the input amplitude. The second part generalizes the results of the first part to the case of $n>1$. In particular, for every dimension $n>1$, it is shown that the number of shells is given by $O(\mathsf{A}^2)$ where $\mathsf{A}$ is the constraint on the input amplitude. Finally, the third part provides bounds on the number of points for the case of $n=1$ with an additional power constraint.

Key and Message Semantic-Security over State-Dependent Channels

We study the trade-off between secret message (SM) and secret key (SK) rates, simultaneously achievable over a state-dependent (SD) wiretap channel (WTC) with non-causal channel state information (CSI) at the encoder. This model subsumes other instances of CSI availability as special cases, and calls for efficient utilization of the state sequence for both reliability and security purposes. An inner bound on the semantic-security (SS) SM-SK capacity region is derived based on a superposition coding scheme inspired by a past work of the authors. The region is shown to attain capacity for a certain class of SD-WTCs. SS is established by virtue of two versions of the strong soft-covering lemma. The derived region yields an improvement upon the previously best known SM-SK trade-off result reported by Prabhakaran et al., and, to the best of our knowledge, upon all other existing lower bounds for either SM or SK for this setup, even if the semantic security requirement is relaxed to weak secrecy. It is demonstrated that our region can be strictly larger than those reported in the preceding works.

Mutual Information of Wireless Channels and Block-Jacobi Ergodic Operators

Shannon's mutual information of a random multiple antenna and multipath channel is studied in the general case where the channel impulse response is an ergodic and stationary process which is assumed to be available at the receiver. From this viewpoint, the channel is represented by an ergodic self-adjoint block-Jacobi operator, which is close in many aspects to a block version of a random Schrödinger operator. The mutual information is then related to the so-called density of states of this operator. In this paper, it is shown that under the weakest assumptions on the channel, the mutual information can be expressed in terms of a matrix-valued stochastic process coupled with the channel process. This allows numerical approximations of the mutual information in this general setting. Moreover, assuming further that the channel impulse response is a Markov process, a representation for the mutual information offset in the large Signal to Noise Ratio regime is obtained in terms of another related Markov process. This generalizes previous results from Levy~\emph{et.al.}. It is also illustrated how the mutual information expressions that are closely related to those predicted by the random matrix theory can be recovered in the large dimensional regime.

How Much Can D2D Communication Reduce Content Delivery Latency in Fog Networks with Edge Caching?

A Fog-Radio Access Network (F-RAN) is studied in which cache-enabled Edge Nodes (ENs) with dedicated fronthaul connections to the cloud aim at delivering contents to mobile users. Using an information-theoretic approach, this work tackles the problem of quantifying the potential latency reduction that can be obtained by enabling Device-to-Device (D2D) communication over out-of-band broadcast links. Following prior work, the Normalized Delivery Time (NDT) --- a metric that captures the high signal-to-noise ratio worst-case latency --- is adopted as the performance criterion of interest. Joint edge caching, downlink transmission, and D2D communication policies based on compress-and-forward are proposed that are shown to be information-theoretically optimal to within a constant multiplicative factor of two for all values of the problem parameters, and to achieve the minimum NDT for a number of special cases. The analysis provides insights on the role of D2D cooperation in improving the delivery latency.

Joint Design of Fronthauling and Hybrid Beamforming for Downlink C-RAN Systems

Hybrid beamforming is known to be a cost-effective and wide-spread solution for a system with large-scale antenna arrays. This work studies the optimization of the analog and digital components of the hybrid beamforming solution for remote radio heads (RRHs) in a downlink cloud radio access network (C-RAN) architecture. Digital processing is carried out at a baseband processing unit (BBU) in the "cloud" and the precoded baseband signals are quantized prior to transmission to the RRHs via finite-capacity fronthaul links. In this system, we consider two different channel state information (CSI) scenarios: 1) ideal CSI at the BBU 2) imperfect effective CSI. Optimization of digital beamforming and fronthaul quantization strategies at the BBU as well as analog radio frequency (RF) beamforming at the RRHs is a coupled problem, since the effect of the quantization noise at the receiver depends on the precoding matrices. The resulting joint optimization problem is examined with the goal of maximizing the weighted downlink sum-rate and the network energy efficiency. Fronthaul capacity and per-RRH power constraints are enforced along with constant modulus constraint on the RF beamforming matrices. For the case of perfect CSI, a block coordinate descent scheme is proposed based on the weighted minimum-mean-square-error approach by relaxing the constant modulus constraint of the analog beamformer. Also, we present the impact of imperfect CSI on the weighted sum-rate and network energy efficiency performance, and the algorithm is extended by applying the sample average approximation. Numerical results confirm the effectiveness of the proposed scheme and show that the proposed algorithm is robust to estimation errors.

Multiplexing Gain Region of Sectorized Cellular Networks with Mixed Delay Constraints

The sectorized hexagonal model with mixed delay constraints is considered when both neighbouring mobile users and base stations can cooperate over rate-limited links. Each message is a combination of independent "fast" and "slow" bits, where the former are subject to a stringent delay constraint and cannot profit from cooperation. Inner and outer bounds on the multiplexing gain region are derived. The obtained results show that for small cooperation prelogs or moderate "fast" multiplexing gains, the overall performance (sum multiplexing gain) is hardly decreased by the stringent delay constraints on the "fast" bits. For large cooperation prelogs and large "fast" multiplexing gains, increasing the "fast" multiplexing gain by $Δ$ comes at the expense of decreasing the sum multiplexing gain by $3 Δ$.

On the Capacity of Cloud Radio Access Networks with Oblivious Relaying

We study the transmission over a network in which users send information to a remote destination through relay nodes that are connected to the destination via finite-capacity error-free links, i.e., a cloud radio access network. The relays are constrained to operate without knowledge of the users' codebooks, i.e., they perform oblivious processing. The destination, or central processor, however, is informed about the users' codebooks. We establish a single-letter characterization of the capacity region of this model for a class of discrete memoryless channels in which the outputs at the relay nodes are independent given the users' inputs. We show that both relaying à-la Cover-El Gamal, i.e., compress-and-forward with joint decompression and decoding, and "noisy network coding", are optimal. The proof of the converse part establishes, and utilizes, connections with the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) source coding problem under logarithmic loss distortion measure. Extensions to general discrete memoryless channels are also investigated. In this case, we establish inner and outer bounds on the capacity region. For memoryless Gaussian channels within the studied class of channels, we characterize the capacity region when the users are constrained to time-share among Gaussian codebooks. Furthermore, we also discuss the suboptimality of separate decompression-decoding and the role of time-sharing.

Broadcasting Information subject to State Masking over a MIMO State Dependent Gaussian Channel

The problem of channel coding over the Gaussian multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) broadcast channel (BC) with additive independent Gaussian states is considered. The states are known in a noncausal manner to the encoder, and it wishes to minimize the amount of information that the receivers can learn from the channel outputs about the state sequence. The state leakage rate is measured as a normalized blockwise mutual information between the state sequence and the channel outputs' sequences. We employ a new version of a state-dependent extremal inequality and show that Gaussian input maximizes the state-dependent version of Marton's outer bound. Further we show that our inner bound coincides with the outer bound. Our result generalizes previously studied scalar Gaussian BC with state and MIMO BC without state.

Secret Key Generation over Noisy Channels with Correlated Sources

This paper investigates the problem of secret key generation over a wiretap channel when the terminals observe correlated sources. These sources are independent of the main channel and the users overhear them before the transmission takes place. A novel achievable scheme is proposed, and its optimality is shown under certain less-noisy conditions. This result improves upon the existing literature where the more stringent condition of degradedness is required. Furthermore, numerical evaluation of the proposed scheme and previously reported results for a binary model are presented; a comparison of the numerical bounds provides insights on the benefit of the novel scheme.

Parallel Gaussian Channels Corrupted by Independent States With a State-Cognitive Helper

We consider a state-dependent parallel Gaussian channel with independent states and a common cognitive helper, in which two transmitters wish to send independent information to their corresponding receivers over two parallel subchannels. Each channel is corrupted by independent additive Gaussian state. The states are not known to the transmitters nor to the receivers, but known to a helper in a noncausal manner. The helper's goal is to assist a reliable communication by mitigating the state. Outer and inner bounds are derived and segments of the capacity region is characterized for various channel parameters.

Broadcasting Information subject to State Masking

We study the problem of coding over a general discrete memoryless broadcast channel controlled by random parameters. The parameters are available at the transmitter in a non-causal manner and are subject to a state masking constraint on the receivers. We derive inner and outer bounds on the achievable region and show that for the special case of Gaussian broadcast channel with private messages, these bounds are tight.

An Elementary Proof of a Classical Information-Theoretic Formula

A renowned information-theoretic formula by Shannon expresses the mutual information rate of a white Gaussian channel with a stationary Gaussian input as an integral of a simple function of the power spectral density of the channel input. We give in this paper a rigorous yet elementary proof of this classical formula. As opposed to all the conventional approaches, which either rely on heavy mathematical machineries or have to resort to some "external" results, our proof, which hinges on a recently proven sampling theorem, is elementary and self-contained, only using some well-known facts from basic calculus and matrix theory.

The Wiretap Channel with Generalized Feedback: Secure Communication and Key Generation

It is a well-known fact that feedback does not increase the capacity of point-to-point memoryless channels, however, its effect in secure communications is not fully understood yet. In this work, an achievable scheme for the wiretap channel with generalized feedback is presented. This scheme, which uses the feedback signal to generate a shared secret key between the legitimate users, encrypts the message to be sent at the bit level. New capacity results for a class of channels are provided, as well as some new insights into the secret key agreement problem. Moreover, this scheme recovers previously reported rate regions from the literature, and thus it can be seen as a generalization that unifies several results in the field.

On the Capacity of the Peak Power Constrained Vector Gaussian Channel: An Estimation Theoretic Perspective

This paper studies the capacity of an $n$-dimensional vector Gaussian noise channel subject to the constraint that an input must lie in the ball of radius $R$ centered at the origin. It is known that in this setting the optimizing input distribution is supported on a finite number of concentric spheres. However, the number, the positions and the probabilities of the spheres are generally unknown. This paper characterizes necessary and sufficient conditions on the constraint $R$ such that the input distribution supported on a single sphere is optimal. The maximum $\bar{R}_n$, such that using only a single sphere is optimal, is shown to be a solution of an integral equation. Moreover, it is shown that $\bar{R}_n$ scales as $\sqrt{n}$ and the exact limit of $\frac{\bar{R}_n}{\sqrt{n}}$ is found.
