Scaling Properties of Weak Chaos in Nonlinear Disordered Lattices

The Discrete Nonlinear Schroedinger Equation with a random potential in one dimension is studied as a dynamical system. It is characterized by the length, the strength of the random potential and by the field density that determines the effect of nonlinearity. The probability of the system to be regular is established numerically and found to be a scaling function. This property is used to calculate the asymptotic properties of the system in regimes beyond our computational power.

A numerical and symbolical approximation of the Nonlinear Anderson Model

A modified perturbation theory in the strength of the nonlinear term is used to solve the Nonlinear Schroedinger Equation with a random potential. It is demonstrated that in some cases it is more efficient than other methods. Moreover we obtain error estimates. This approach can be useful for the solution of other nonlinear differential equations of physical relevance.

Perturbation theory for the Nonlinear Schroedinger Equation with a random potential

A perturbation theory for the Nonlinear Schroedinger Equation (NLSE) in 1D on a lattice was developed. The small parameter is the strength of the nonlinearity. For this purpose secular terms were removed and a probabilistic bound on small denominators was developed. It was shown that the number of terms grows exponentially with the order. The results of the perturbation theory are compared with numerical calculations. An estimate on the remainder is obtained and it is demonstrated that the series is asymptotic.

Double humped states in the nonlinear Schroedinger equation with a random potential

The role of double humped states in spreading of wave packets for the nonlinear Schroedinger equation (NLSE) with a random potential is explored and the spreading mechanism is unraveled. Comparison with an NLSE with a double-well potential is made. There are two independent affects of the nonlinearity on the double humped states for the NLSE: coupling to other states and destruction. The interplay between these effects is discussed.

Spreading for the generalized nonlinear Schroedinger equation with disorder

The dynamics of an initially localized wavepacket is studied for the generalized nonlinear Schroedinger Equation with a random potential, where the nonlinearity term is |ψ|^p*ψand "p" is arbitrary. Mainly short times for which the numerical calculations can be performed accurately are considered. Long time calculations are presented as well. In particular the subdiffusive behavior where the average second moment of the wavepacket is of the form ~t^a is computed. Contrary to former heuristic arguments, no evidence for any critical behavior as function of "p" is found. The properties of α(t) are explored.

Ramsey interferometry with a spin embedded in a Coulomb chain

We show that the statistical properties of a Coulomb crystal can be measured by means of a standard interferometric procedure performed on the spin of one ion in the chain. The ion spin, constituted by two internal levels of the ion, couples to the crystal modes via spatial displacement induced by photon absorption. The loss of contrast in the interferometric signal allows one to measure the autocorrelation function of the crystal observables. Close to the critical point, where the chain undergoes a second-order phase transition to a zigzag structure, the signal gives the behaviour of the correlation function at the critical point.

On the distribution of linear combinations of eigenvalues of the Anderson model

Probabilistic estimates on linear combinations of eigenvalues of the one dimensional Anderson model are derived. So far only estimates on the density of eigenvalues and of pairs were found by Wegner and by Minami. Our work was motivated by perturbative explorations of the Nonlinear Schroedinger Equation, where linear combinations of eigenvalues are the denominators and evaluation of their smallness is crucial.

Asymptotic localization of stationary states in the nonlinear Schroedinger equation

The mapping of the Nonlinear Schroedinger Equation with a random potential on the Fokker-Planck equation is used to calculate the localization length of its stationary states. The asymptotic growth rates of the moments of the wave function and its derivative for the linear Schroedinger Equation in a random potential are computed analytically and resummation is used to obtain the corresponding growth rate for the nonlinear Schroedinger equation and the localization length of the stationary states.

Structural phase transitions in low-dimensional ion crystals

A chain of singly-charged particles, confined by a harmonic potential, exhibits a sudden transition to a zigzag configuration when the radial potential reaches a critical value, depending on the particle number. This structural change is a phase transition of second order, whose order parameter is the crystal displacement from the chain axis. We study analytically the transition using Landau theory and find full agreement with numerical predictions by [J. Schiffer Phys. Rev. Lett. 70, 818 (1993)] and [Piacente et al Phys. Rev. B 69, 045324 (2004)]. Our theory allows us to determine analytically the system's behaviour at the transition point.

The Localization Length of Stationary States in the Nonlinear Schreodinger Equation

For the nonlinear Schreodinger equation (NLSE), in presence of disorder, exponentially localized stationary states are found. In the present Letter it is demonstrated analytically that the localization length is typically independent of the strength of the nonlinearity and is identical to the one found for the corresponding linear equation. The analysis makes use of the correspondence between the stationary NLSE and the Langevin equation as well as of the resulting Fokker-Planck equation. The calculations are performed for the ``white noise'' random potential and an exact expression for the exponential growth of the eigenstates is obtained analytically. It is argued that the main conclusions are robust.

Effects of atomic interactions on Quantum Accelerator Modes

We consider the influence of the inclusion of interatomic interactions on the delta-kicked accelerator model. Our analysis concerns in particular quantum accelerator modes, namely quantum ballistic transport near quantal resonances. The atomic interaction is modelled by a Gross-Pitaevskii cubic nonlinearity, and we address both attractive (focusing) and repulsive (defocusing) cases. The most remarkable effect is enhancement or damping of the accelerator modes, depending on the sign of the nonlinear parameter. We provide arguments showing that the effect persists beyond mean-field description, and lies within the experimentally accessible parameter range.

Regimes of stability of accelerator modes

The phase diagram of a simple area-preserving map, which was motivated by the quantum dynamics of cold atoms, is explored analytically and numerically. Periodic orbits of a given winding ratio are found to exist within wedge-shaped regions in the phase diagrams, which are analogous to the Arnol'd tongues which have been extensively studied for a variety of dynamical systems, mostly dissipative ones. A rich variety of bifurcations of various types are observed, as well as period doubling cascades. Stability of periodic orbits is analyzed in detail.

Decay of Quantum Accelerator Modes

Experimentally observable Quantum Accelerator Modes are used as a test case for the study of some general aspects of quantum decay from classical stable islands immersed in a chaotic sea. The modes are shown to correspond to metastable states, analogous to the Wannier-Stark resonances. Different regimes of tunneling, marked by different quantitative dependence of the lifetimes on 1/hbar, are identified, depending on the resolution of KAM substructures that is achieved on the scale of hbar. The theory of Resonance Assisted Tunneling introduced by Brodier, Schlagheck, and Ullmo [9], is revisited, and found to well describe decay whenever applicable.

Arnol'd Tongues and Quantum Accelerator Modes

The stable periodic orbits of an area-preserving map on the 2-torus, which is formally a variant of the Standard Map, have been shown to explain the quantum accelerator modes that were discovered in experiments with laser-cooled atoms. We show that their parametric dependence exhibits Arnol'd-like tongues and perform a perturbative analysis of such structures. We thus explain the arithmetical organisation of the accelerator modes and discuss experimental implications thereof.

Scaling and Universality of the Complexity of Analog Computation

We apply a probabilistic approach to study the computational complexity of analog computers which solve linear programming problems. We analyze numerically various ensembles of linear programming problems and obtain, for each of these ensembles, the probability distribution functions of certain quantities which measure the computational complexity, known as the convergence rate, the barrier and the computation time. We find that in the limit of very large problems these probability distributions are universal scaling functions. In other words, the probability distribution function for each of these three quantities becomes, in the limit of large problem size, a function of a single scaling variable, which is a certain composition of the quantity in question and the size of the system. Moreover, various ensembles studied seem to lead essentially to the same scaling functions, which depend only on the variance of the ensemble. These results extend analytical and numerical results obtained recently for the Gaussian ensemble, and support the conjecture that these scaling functions are universal.

A Universal Scaling Theory for Complexity of Analog Computation

We discuss the computational complexity of solving linear programming problems by means of an analog computer. The latter is modeled by a dynamical system which converges to the optimal vertex solution. We analyze various probability ensembles of linear programming problems. For each one of these we obtain numerically the probability distribution functions of certain quantities which measure the complexity. Remarkably, in the asymptotic limit of very large problems, each of these probability distribution functions reduces to a universal scaling function, depending on a single scaling variable and independent of the details of its parent probability ensemble. These functions are reminiscent of the scaling functions familiar in the theory of phase transitions. The results reported here extend analytical and numerical results obtained recently for the Gaussian ensemble.

Time-independent approximations for periodically driven systems with friction

The classical dynamics of a particle that is driven by a rapidly oscillating potential (with frequency $ω$) is studied. The motion is separated into a slow part and a fast part that oscillates around the slow part. The motion of the slow part is found to be described by a time-independent equation that is derived as an expansion in orders of $ω^{-1}$ (in this paper terms to the order $ω^{-3}$ are calculated explicitly). This time-independent equation is used to calculate the attracting fixed points and their basins of attraction. The results are found to be in excellent agreement with numerical solutions of the original time-dependent problem.

Dynamics of an ion chain in a harmonic potential

Cold ions in anisotropic harmonic potentials can form ion chains of various sizes. Here, the density of ions is not uniform, thus the eigenmodes are not phononic-like waves. We study chains of N>>1 ions and evaluate analytically the long wavelength modes and the density of states in the short wavelength limit. These results reproduce with good approximation the dynamics of chains consisting of dozens of ions. Moreover, they allow to determine the critical transverse frequency required for the stability of the linear structure, which is found in agreement with results obtained by different theoretical methods [D.H.E. Dubin, Phys. Rev. Lett. 71, 2753 (1993)] and by numerical simulations [J.P. Schiffer, Phys. Rev. Lett. 70, 818 (1993)]. We introduce and explore the thermodynamic limit for the ion chain. The thermodynamic functions are found to exhibit deviations from extensivity.
