Theory and Applications of N-Fold Integer Programming

We overview our recently introduced theory of n-fold integer programming which enables the polynomial time solution of fundamental linear and nonlinear integer programming problems in variable dimension. We demonstrate its power by obtaining the first polynomial time algorithms in several application areas including multicommodity flows and privacy in statistical databases.

Multicommodity Flow in Polynomial Time

The multicommodity flow problem is NP-hard already for two commodities over bipartite graphs. Nonetheless, using our recent theory of n-fold integer programming and extensions developed herein, we are able to establish the surprising polynomial time solvability of the problem in two broad situations.

Graphs of Transportation Polytopes

This paper discusses properties of the graphs of 2-way and 3-way transportation polytopes, in particular, their possible numbers of vertices and their diameters. Our main results include a quadratic bound on the diameter of axial 3-way transportation polytopes and a catalogue of non-degenerate transportation polytopes of small sizes. The catalogue disproves five conjectures about these polyhedra stated in the monograph by Yemelichev et al. (1984). It also allowed us to discover some new results. For example, we prove that the number of vertices of an $m\times n$ transportation polytope is a multiple of the greatest common divisor of $m$ and $n$.

Nash-equilibria and N-fold integer programming

Inspired by a paper of R. W. Rosenthal, we investigate generalized Nash-equilibria of integer programming games. We show that generalized Nash-equilibria always exist and are related to an optimal solution of a so-called N-fold integer program. This link allows us to establish some polynomial time complexity results about solving this optimization problem and its inverse counter-part.

Minimal average degree aberration and the state polytope for experimental designs

For a particular experimental design, there is interest in finding which polynomial models can be identified in the usual regression set up. The algebraic methods based on Groebner bases provide a systematic way of doing this. The algebraic method does not in general produce all estimable models but it can be shown that it yields models which have minimal average degree in a well-defined sense and in both a weighted and unweighted version. This provides an alternative measure to that based on "aberration" and moreover is applicable to any experimental design. A simple algorithm is given and bounds are derived for the criteria, which may be used to give asymptotic Nyquist-like estimability rates as model and sample sizes increase.

Nonlinear optimization for matroid intersection and extensions

We address optimization of nonlinear functions of the form $f(Wx)$, where $f:\R^d\to \R$ is a nonlinear function, $W$ is a $d\times n$ matrix, and feasible $x$ are in some large finite set $F$ of integer points in $\R^n$. One motivation is multi-objective discrete optimization, where $f$ trades off the linear functions given by the rows of $W$. Another motivation is to extend known results about polynomial-time linear optimization over discrete structures to nonlinear optimization. We assume that the convex hull of $F$ is well-described by linear inequalities. For example, the set of characteristic vectors of common bases of a pair of matroids on a common ground set. When $F$ is well described, $f$ is convex (or even quasiconvex), and $W$ has a fixed number of rows and is unary encoded or with entries in a fixed set, we give an efficient deterministic algorithm for maximization. When $F$ is well described, $f$ is a norm, and binary-encoded $W$ is nonnegative, we give an efficient deterministic constant-approximation algorithm for maximization. When $F$ is well described, $f$ is ``ray concave'' and non-decreasing, and $W$ has a fixed number of rows and is unary encoded or with entries in a fixed set, we give an efficient deterministic constant-approximation algorithm for minimization. When $F$ is the set of characteristic vectors of common bases of a pair of vectorial matroids on a common ground set, $f$ is arbitrary, and $W$ has a fixed number of rows and is unary encoded, we give an efficient randomized algorithm for optimization.

Nonlinear Optimization over a Weighted Independence System

We consider the problem of optimizing a nonlinear objective function over a weighted independence system presented by a linear-optimization oracle. We provide a polynomial-time algorithm that determines an r-best solution for nonlinear functions of the total weight of an independent set, where r is a constant that depends on certain Frobenius numbers of the individual weights and is independent of the size of the ground set. In contrast, we show that finding an optimal (0-best) solution requires exponential time even in a very special case of the problem.

Two graph isomorphism polytopes

The convex hull $ψ_{n,n}$ of certain $(n!)^2$ tensors was considered recently in connection with graph isomorphism. We consider the convex hull $ψ_n$ of the $n!$ diagonals among these tensors. We show: 1. The polytope $ψ_n$ is a face of $ψ_{n,n}$. 2. Deciding if a graph $G$ has a subgraph isomorphic to $H$ reduces to optimization over $ψ_n$. 3. Optimization over $ψ_n$ reduces to optimization over $ψ_{n,n}$. In particular, this implies that the subgraph isomorphism problem reduces to optimization over $ψ_{n,n}$.

The Graver Complexity of Integer Programming

In this article we establish an exponential lower bound on the Graver complexity of integer programs. This provides new type of evidence supporting the presumable intractability of integer programming. Specifically, we show that the Graver complexity of the incidence matrix of the complete bipartite graph $K_{3,m}$ satisfies $g(m)=Ω(2^m)$, with $g(m)\geq 17\cdot 2^{m-3}-7$ for every $m>3$ .

A polynomial oracle-time algorithm for convex integer minimization

In this paper we consider the solution of certain convex integer minimization problems via greedy augmentation procedures. We show that a greedy augmentation procedure that employs only directions from certain Graver bases needs only polynomially many augmentation steps to solve the given problem. We extend these results to convex $N$-fold integer minimization problems and to convex 2-stage stochastic integer minimization problems. Finally, we present some applications of convex $N$-fold integer minimization problems for which our approach provides polynomial time solution algorithms.

Nonlinear Matroid Optimization and Experimental Design

We study the problem of optimizing nonlinear objective functions over matroids presented by oracles or explicitly. Such functions can be interpreted as the balancing of multi-criteria optimization. We provide a combinatorial polynomial time algorithm for arbitrary oracle-presented matroids, that makes repeated use of matroid intersection, and an algebraic algorithm for vectorial matroids. Our work is partly motivated by applications to minimum-aberration model-fitting in experimental design in statistics, which we discuss and demonstrate in detail.

Convex Discrete Optimization

We develop an algorithmic theory of convex optimization over discrete sets. Using a combination of algebraic and geometric tools we are able to provide polynomial time algorithms for solving broad classes of convex combinatorial optimization problems and convex integer programming problems in variable dimension. We discuss some of the many applications of this theory including to quadratic programming, matroids, bin packing and cutting-stock problems, vector partitioning and clustering, multiway transportation problems, and privacy and confidential statistical data disclosure. Highlights of our work include a strongly polynomial time algorithm for convex and linear combinatorial optimization over any family presented by a membership oracle when the underlying polytope has few edge-directions; a new theory of so-termed n-fold integer programming, yielding polynomial time solution of important and natural classes of convex and linear integer programming problems in variable dimension; and a complete complexity classification of high dimensional transportation problems, with practical applications to fundamental problems in privacy and confidential statistical data disclosure.

Nonlinear Bipartite Matching

We study the problem of optimizing nonlinear objective functions over bipartite matchings. While the problem is generally intractable, we provide several efficient algorithms for it, including a deterministic algorithm for maximizing convex objectives, approximative algorithms for norm minimization and maximization, and a randomized algorithm for optimizing arbitrary objectives.

N-Fold Integer Programming

In this article we study a broad class of integer programming problems in variable dimension. We show that these so-termed {\em n-fold integer programming problems} are polynomial time solvable. Our proof involves two heavy ingredients discovered recently: the equivalence of linear optimization and so-called directed augmentation, and the stabilization of certain Graver bases. We discuss several applications of our algorithm to multiway transportation problems and to packing problems. One important consequence of our results is a polynomial time algorithm for the $d$-dimensional integer transportation problem for long multiway tables. Another interesting application is a new algorithm for the classical cutting stock problem.

Nowhere-Zero Flow Polynomials

In this article we introduce the flow polynomial of a digraph and use it to study nowhere-zero flows from a commutative algebraic perspective. Using Hilbert's Nullstellensatz, we establish a relation between nowhere-zero flows and dual flows. For planar graphs this gives a relation between nowhere-zero flows and flows of their planar duals. It also yields an appealing proof that every bridgeless triangulated graph has a nowhere-zero four-flow.

The Complexity of Three-Way Statistical Tables

Multi-way tables with specified marginals arise in a variety of applications in statistics and operations research. We provide a comprehensive complexity classification of three fundamental computational problems on tables: existence, counting and entry-security. One major outcome of our work is that each of the following problems is intractable already for "slim" 3-tables, with constant and smallest possible number 3 of rows: (1) deciding existence of 3-tables with given consistent 2-marginals; (2) counting all 3-tables with given 2-marginals; (3) finding whether an integer value is attained in entry (i,j,k) by at least one of the 3-tables satisfying given (feasible) 2-marginals. This implies that a characterization of feasible marginals for such slim tables, sought by much recent research, is unlikely to exist. Another important consequence of our study is a systematic efficient way of embedding the set of 3-tables satisfying any given 1-marginals and entry upper bounds in a set of slim 3-tables satisfying suitable 2-marginals with no entry bounds. This provides a valuable tool for studying multi-index transportation problems and multi-index transportation polytopes.

The Hilbert Zonotope and a Polynomial Time Algorithm for Universal Grobner Bases

We provide a polynomial time algorithm for computing the universal Gröbner basis of any polynomial ideal having a finite set of common zeros in fixed number of variables. One ingredient of our algorithm is an effective construction of the state polyhedron of any member of the Hilbert scheme Hilb^d_n of n-long d-variate ideals, enabled by introducing the Hilbert zonotope H^d_n and showing that it simultaneously refines all state polyhedra of ideals on Hilb^d_n.
