On the string topology category of compact Lie groups

This paper examines the string topology category of a manifold, defined by Blumberg, Cohen and Teleman. Since the string topology category is a subcategory of a compactly generated triangulated category, the machinery of stratification, constructed by Benson, Krause and Iyengar, can be applied in order to gain an understanding of the string topology category. It is shown that an appropriate stratification holds when the manifold in question is a simply connected compact Lie group. This last result is used to derive some properties of the relevant string topology categories.

A spectral sequence for the Hochschild cohomology of a coconnective dga

A spectral sequence for the computation of the Hochschild cohomology of a coconnective dga over a field is presented. This spectral sequence has a similar flavour to the spectral sequence constructed by Cohen, Jones and Yan for the computation of the loop homology of a closed orientable manifold. Using this spectral sequence we identify a class of spaces for which the Hochschild cohomology of their mod-p cochain algebra is Noetherian. This implies, among other things, that for such a space the derived category of mod-p chains on its loop-space carries a theory of support varieties.

A colocalization spectral sequence

Colocalization is a right adjoint to the inclusion of a subcategory. Given a ring-spectrum R, one would like a spectral sequence which connects a given colocalization in the derived category of R-modules and an appropriate colocalization in the derived category of graded modules over the graded ring of homotopy groups of R. We show that, under suitable conditions, such a spectral sequence exists. This generalizes Greenlees' local-cohomology spectral sequence. The colocalization spectral sequence introduced here is associated with a localization spectral sequence, which is shown to be universal in an appropriate sense. We apply the colocalization spectral sequence to the cochains of certain loop spaces, yielding a non-commutative local-cohomology spectral sequence converging to the shifted cohomology of the loop space, a result dual to the local-cohomology theorem of Dwyer, Greenlees and Iyengar. An application to the abutment term of the Eilenberg-Moore spectral sequence is also presented.

Stratifying derived categories of cochains on certain spaces

In recent years, Benson, Iyengar and Krause have developed a theory of stratification for compactly generated triangulated categories with an action of a graded commutative Noetherian ring. Stratification implies a classification of localizing and thick subcategories in terms of subsets of the prime ideal spectrum of the given ring. In this paper two stratification results are presented: one for the derived category of a commutative ring-spectrum with polynomial homotopy and another for the derived category of cochains on certain spaces. We also give the stratification of cochains on a space a topological content.

Colocalization functors in derived categories and torsion theories

Let R be a ring and let T be a hereditary torsion class of R-modules. The inclusion of the localizing subcategory generated by T into the derived category of R has a right adjoint, which is a colocalization. Benson has recently shown how to compute this right sdjoint when R is the group ring of a finite group over a prime field and T is the hereditary torsion class generated by a simple module. We generalize Benson's construction to the case where T is any hereditary torsion class on R. This yields an explicit formula for the colocalization with respect to T, using an injective cogenerator for T.

Cellular approximations and the Eilenberg-Moore spectral-sequence

We set up machinery for recognizing k-cellular modules and k-cellular approximations, where k is an R-module and R is either a ring or a ring-spectrum. Using this machinery we can identify the target of the Eilenberg-Moore cohomology spectral sequence for a fibration in various cases. In this manner we get new proofs for known results concerning the Eilenberg-Moore spectral sequence and generalize another result.
