Robustified Gaussian quasi-BIC for volatility

We develop a theoretical foundation for robust model comparison in a class of non-ergodic continuous volatility regression models contaminated by finite-activity jumps. Using the density-power weighting and the Hölder(-inequality)-based normalization of the conventional Gaussian quasi-likelihood function, we propose two Schwarz-type statistics and also establish their model selection consistency with respect to the minimal true parametric volatility coefficient. Numerical experiments are conducted to illustrate our theoretical findings.

Robustified Gaussian quasi-likelihood inference for volatility

We consider statistical inference for a class of continuous semimartingale regression models based on high-frequency observations subject to contamination by finite-activity jumps and spike noise. By employing density-power weighting and Hölder-inequality-based normalization, we propose easy-to-implement, robustified versions of the conventional Gaussian quasi-maximum-likelihood estimator that require only a single tuning parameter. We prove their asymptotic mixed normality at the standard rate of $\sqrt{n}$. It is theoretically shown that these estimators are simultaneously robust against contamination in both the covariate and response processes. Additionally, under suitable conditions on the selection of the tuning parameter, the proposed estimators achieve the same asymptotic distribution as the conventional estimator in the contamination-free case. Illustrative simulation results highlight the estimators' insensitivity to the choice of the tuning parameter.

Gaussian quasi-information criteria for ergodic Lévy driven SDE

We consider relative model comparison for the parametric coefficients of a semiparametric ergodic Lévy driven model observed at high-frequency. Our asymptotics is based on the fully explicit two-stage Gaussian quasi-likelihood function (GQLF) of the Euler-approximation type. For selections of the scale and drift coefficients, we propose explicit Gaussian quasi-AIC (GQAIC) and Gaussian quasi-BIC (GQBIC) statistics through the stepwise inference procedure. In particular, we show that the mixed-rates structure of the joint GQLF, which does not emerge for the case of diffusions, gives rise to the non-standard forms of the regularization terms in the selection of the scale coefficient, quantitatively clarifying the relation between estimation precision and sampling frequency. Numerical experiments are given to illustrate our theoretical findings.

Schwartz type model selection for ergodic stochastic differential equation models

We study the construction of the theoretical foundation of model comparison for ergodic stochastic differential equation (SDE) models and an extension of the applicable scope of the conventional Bayesian information criterion. Different from previous studies, we suppose that the candidate models are possibly misspecified models, and we consider both Wiener and a pure-jump Lévy noise driven SDE. Based on the asymptotic behavior of the marginal quasi-log likelihood, the Schwarz type statistics and stepwise model selection procedure are proposed. We also prove the model selection consistency of the proposed statistics with respect to an optimal model. We conduct some numerical experiments and they support our theoretical findings.

Data driven time scale in Gaussian quasi-likelihood inference

We study parametric estimation of ergodic diffusions observed at high frequency. Different from the previous studies, we suppose that sampling stepsize is unknown, thereby making the conventional Gaussian quasi-likelihood not directly applicable. In this situation, we construct estimators of both model parameters and sampling stepsize in a fully explicit way, and prove that they are jointly asymptotically normally distributed. The $L^{q}$-boundedness of the obtained estimator is also derived. Further, we propose the Schwarz (BIC) type statistics for model selection and show its model-selection consistency. We conducted some numerical experiments and found that the observed finite-sample performance well supports our theoretical findings. Also provided is a real data example.

Model comparison for generalized linear models with dependent observations

The stochastic expansion of the marginal quasi-likelihood function associated with a class of generalized linear models is shown. Based on the expansion, a quasi-Bayesian information criterion is proposed that is able to deal with misspecified models and dependent data, resulting in a theoretical extension of the classical Schwarz's Bayesian information criterion. It is also proved that the proposed criterion has model selection consistency with respect to the optimal model. Some illustrative numerical examples and a real data example are presented.

Schwarz type model comparison for LAQ models

For model-specification purpose, we study asymptotic behavior of the marginal quasi-log likelihood associated with a family of locally asymptotically quadratic (LAQ) statistical experiments. Our result entails a far-reaching extension of applicable scope of the classical approximate Bayesian model comparison due to Schwarz, with frequentist-view theoretical foundation. In particular, the proposed statistics can deal with both ergodic and non-ergodic stochastic-process models, where the corresponding $M$-estimator is of multi-scaling type and the asymptotic quasi-information matrix is random. Focusing on the ergodic diffusion model, we also deduce the consistency of the multistage optimal-model selection where we may select an optimal sub-model structure step by step, so that computational cost can be much reduced. We illustrate the proposed method by the Gaussian quasi-likelihood for diffusion-type models in details, together with several numerical experiments.
