Effect of low-lying fermion modes in the $ε$-regime of QCD

We investigate the effects of low-lying fermion eigenmodes on the QCD partition function in the $ε$-regime. The fermion determinant is approximated by a truncated product of low-lying eigenvalues of the overlap-Dirac operator. With two flavors of dynamical quarks, we observe that the lattice results for the lowest eigenvalue distribution, eigenvalue sum rules and partition function reproduce the analytic predictions made by Leutwyler and Smilga, which strongly depend on the topological charge of the background gauge configuration. The value of chiral condensate extracted from these measurements are consistent with each other. For one dynamical quark flavor, on the other hand, we find an apparent disagreement among different determinations of the chiral condensate, which may suggest the failure of the $ε$-expansion in the absence of massless Nambu-Goldstone boson.

Application of heavy-quark effective theory to lattice QCD: II. Radiative corrections to heavy-light currents

We apply heavy-quark effective theory to separate long- and short-distance effects of heavy quarks in lattice gauge theory. In this approach, the inverse heavy-quark mass and the lattice spacing are treated as short distances, and their effects are lumped into short-distance coefficients. We show how to use this formalism to match lattice gauge theory to continuum QCD, order by order in the heavy-quark expansion. In this paper, we focus on heavy-light currents. In particular, we obtain one-loop results for the matching factors of lattice currents, needed for heavy-quark phenomenology, such as the calculation of heavy-light decay constants, and heavy-to-light transition form factors. Results for the Brodsky-Lepage-Mackenzie scale $q^*$ are also given.

Effects of low-lying fermion modes in the epsilon regime

We investigate the effects of low-lying fermion modes on the QCD partition function in the epsilon-regime. With the overlap Dirac operator we calculate several tens of low-lying fermion eigenvalues on the quenched lattice. By partially incorporating the fermion determinant through the truncated determinant approximation, we calculate the partition function and other related quantities for Nf = 1 and compare them with the theoretical predictions obtained by Leutwyler and Smilga.

Heavy Quarks on the Lattice

Lattice quantum chromodynamics provides first principles calculations for hadrons containing heavy quarks -- charm and bottom quarks. Their mass spectra, decay rates, and some hadronic matrix elements can be calculated on the lattice in a model independent manner. In this review, we introduce the effective theories that treat heavy quarks on the lattice. We summarize results on the heavy quarkonium spectrum, which verify the validity of the effective theory approach. We then discuss applications to $B$ physics, which is the main target of the lattice theory of heavy quarks. We review progress in lattice calculations of the $B$ meson decay constant, the $B$ parameter, semi-leptonic decay form factors, and other important quantities.)

Anisotropic lattice actions for heavy quark

The anisotropic lattice fermion actions are investigated with the one-loop perturbative calculations aiming at constructing a formulation for heavy quark with controlled systematic uncertainties. For the heavy-light systems at rest the anisotropic lattice with small temporal lattice spacing $a_t$ suppresses the discretization error by a power of $a_t m_Q$ for a heavy quark of mass $m_Q$. We discuss the issue of large discretization errors, which scales as $a_s m_Q$ with $a_s$ the spatial lattice spacing. By performing one-loop calculations of the speed-of-light renormalization for several possible lattice actions in the limit of $a_t\to 0$, we show that one can eliminate the large systematic error on the anisotropic lattice.

Panel discussion on chiral extrapolation of physical observables

This is an approximate reconstruction of the panel discussion on chiral extrapolation of physical observables. The session consisted of brief presentations from panelists, followed by responses from the panel, and concluded with questions and comments from the floor with answers from panelists. In the following, the panelists have summarized their statements, and the ensuing discussion has been approximately reconstructed from notes.

Perturbative calculation of O(a) improvement coefficients

We compute several coefficients needed for O(a) improvement of currents in perturbation theory, using the Brodsky-Lepage-Mackenzie prescription for choosing an optimal scale q*. We then compare the results to non-perturbative calculations. Normalization factors of the vector and axial vector currents show good agreement, especially when allowing for small two-loop effects. On the other hand, there are large discrepancies in the coefficients of O(a) improvement terms. We suspect that they arise primarily from power corrections inherent in the non-perturbative methods.

Application of heavy-quark effective theory to lattice QCD: III. Radiative corrections to heavy-heavy currents

We apply heavy-quark effective theory (HQET) to separate long- and short-distance effects of heavy quarks in lattice gauge theory. In this paper we focus on flavor-changing currents that mediate transitions from one heavy flavor to another. We stress differences in the formalism for heavy-light currents, which are discussed in a companion paper, showing how HQET provides a systematic matching procedure. We obtain one-loop results for the matching factors of lattice currents, needed for heavy-quark phenomenology, such as the calculation of zero-recoil form factors for the semileptonic decays $B\to D^{(*)}lν$. Results for the Brodsky-Lepage-Mackenzie scale $q^*$ are also given.

Lattice calculation of the zero-recoil form factor of anti-B --> D* lepton anti-neutrino: toward a model independent determination of |V(cb)|

We develop a new method in lattice QCD to calculate the form factor F(1) at zero recoil. This is the main theoretical ingredient needed to determine |V(cb)| from the exclusive decay anti-B --> D* lepton anti-neutrino. We introduce three ratios, in which most of statistical and systematic error cancels, making a precise calculation possible. We fit the heavy-quark mass dependence directly, and extract the 1/m_Q^2 and three of the four 1/m_Q^3 corrections in the heavy-quark expansion. In this paper we show how the method works in the quenched approximation, obtaining F(1) = 0.913 (+0.024-0.017)(+/-0.016)(+0.003-0.014)(+0.000-0.016)(+0.006-0.014) where the uncertainties come, respectively, from statistics and fitting, matching lattice gauge theory to QCD, lattice spacing dependence, light quark mass effects, and the quenched approximation. We also discuss how to reduce these uncertainties and, thus, to obtain a model-independent determination of |V(cb)|.

B^0-\bar{B}^0 mixing from lattice QCD

We report on lattice calculations of the $B$ meson decay constant and the B-parameters using the NRQCD action for heavy quark. We performed a set of calculations at three lattice spacings in the quenched approximation in order to investigate the systematic uncertainty associated with the lattice discretization. Our results indicate that the systematic error is under good control for f_B and B_B. We also present preliminary results from our unquenched simulation.

Width difference of the B_s mesons from lattice QCD

We extend our previous studies to calculate the B meson B parameters B_B and B_S on the lattice, and present an update of the results for the B_s meson width difference. We perform an extensive study of systematic errors in the quenched calculation of the B-parameters, and find that the systematic errors are in good control using the NRQCD action for heavy quark. We also report our preliminary results from unquenched simulations.

Lattice QCD calculation of $\bar{B}\to Dl\barν$ decay form factors at zero recoil

A lattice QCD calculation of the $\bar{B}\to Dl\barν$ decay form factors is presented. We obtain the value of the form factor $h_+(w)$ at the zero-recoil limit $w=1$ with high precision by considering a ratio of correlation functions in which the bulk of the uncertainties cancels. The other form factor $h_-(w)$ is calculated, for small recoil momenta, from a similar ratio. In both cases, the heavy quark mass dependence is observed through direct calculations with several combinations of initial and final heavy quark masses. Our results are $h_+(1) = 1.007(6)(2)(3)$ and $h_-(1)=-0.107(28)(04)(^{10}_{30})$. For both the first error is statistical, the second stems from the uncertainty in adjusting the heavy quark masses, and the last from omitted radiative corrections. Combining these results, we obtain a precise determination of the physical combination $F_{B\to D}(1)=1.058(^{20}_{17})$, where the mentioned systematic errors are added in quadrature. The dependence on lattice spacing and the effect of quenching are not yet included, but with our method they should be a fraction of $F_{B\to D}-1$.

The Background Field Method: Alternative Way of Deriving the Pinch Technique's Results

We show that the background field method (BFM) is a simple way of deriving the same gauge-invariant results which are obtained by the pinch technique (PT). For illustration we construct gauge-invariant self-energy and three-point vertices for gluons at one-loop level by BFM and demonstrate that we get the same results which were derived via PT. We also calculate the four-gluon vertex in BFM and show that this vertex obeys the same Ward identity that was found with PT.}

Computation of the Heavy-Light Decay Constant using Non-relativistic Lattice QCD

We report results on a lattice calculation of the heavy-light meson decay constant employing the non-relativistic QCD approach for heavy quark and Wilson action for light quark. Simulations are carried out at $β=6.0$ on a $16^3\times 48$ lattice. Signal to noise ratio for the ground state is significantly improved compared to simulations in the static approximation, enabling us to extract the decay constant reliably. We compute the heavy-light decay constant for several values of heavy quark mass and estimate the magnitude of the deviation from the heavy mass scaling law $f_{P} \sqrt{m_{P}} = const$. For the $B$ meson we find $f_{B} = 171\pm 22^{+19}_{-45}$ MeV, while an extrapolation to the static limit yields $f_{B}^{static}$ = $297\pm 36^{+15}_{-30}$ MeV.
