Optical characterization of platinum-halide ladder compounds

New varieties of quasi-one-dimensional halogen (X)-bridged transition-metal (M) complexes, (C_8_H_6_N_4_)[Pt(C_2_H_8_N_2_)X]_2_X(ClO_4_)_3_\cdotH_2_O (X=Br,Cl) and (C_10_H_8_N_2_)[Pt(C_4_H_13_N_3_)Br]_2_Br_4_\cdot2H_2_O, comprising two-leg ladders of mixed-valent platinum ions, are described in terms of a multiband extended Peierls-Hubbard Hamiltonian. The polarized optical conductivity spectra are theoretically reproduced and the ground-state valence distributions are reasonably determined. The latter variety, whose interchain valence arrangement is out of phase, is reminiscent of conventional MX single-chain compounds, while the former variety, whose interchain valence arrangement is in phase, reveals itself as a novel d-p-π-hybridized multiband ladder material.

Magnetic Phase Diagram of Spin-1/2 Two-Leg Ladder with Four-Spin Ring Exchange

We study the spin-1/2 two-leg Heisenberg ladder with four-spin ring exchanges under a magnetic field. We introduce an exact duality transformation which is an extension of the spin-chirality duality developed previously and yields a new self-dual surface in the parameter space. We then determine the magnetic phase diagram using the numerical approaches of the density-matrix renormalization-group and exact diagonalization methods. We demonstrate the appearance of a magnetization plateau and the Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid with dominant vector-chirality quasi-long-range order for a wide parameter regime of strong ring exchange. A "nematic" phase, in which magnons form bound pairs and the magnon-pairing correlation functions dominate, is also identified.

Spin dynamics in molecular ring nanomagnets: Significant effect of acoustic phonons and magnetic anisotropies

The nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate 1/T_1_ is calculated for magnetic ring clusters by fully diagonalizing their microscopic spin Hamiltonians. Whether the nearest-neighbor exchange interaction J is ferromagnetic or antiferromagnetic, 1/T_1_ versus temperature T in ring nanomagnets may be peaked at around k_B_T=|J| provided the lifetime broadening of discrete energy levels is in proportion to T^3^. Experimental findings for ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic Cu^II^ rings are reproduced with crucial contributions of magnetic anisotropies as well as acoustic phonons.

Evidence for multimagnon-mediated nuclear spin relaxation in the intertwining double-cain ferrimagnet $Ca_3 Cu_3 (PO_4)_4$

The nuclear spin-lattice relaxation time $T_1$ of $^{31}P$ nuclei in the title compound is measured for the first time and interpreted in terms of a modified spin-wave theory. We establish a novel scenario for one-dimensional ferrimagnetic spin dynamics -- it is three-magnon processes enhanced by exchange scattering, rather than Raman processes, that make the major contribution to $1/T_1$.

Competing ground states of metal-halide ladders

Based on a symmetry argument, we investigate the ground-state properties of newly synthesized metal-halide ladder compounds (C_8_H_6_N_4_)[Pt(C_2_H_8_N_2_)X]_2_(ClO_4_)_4_ 2H_2_O (X=Cl, Br, I). Employing a fully dressed two-band Peierls-Hubbard model, we systematically reveal possible charge- or spin-ordered states. Numerical phase diagrams demonstrate a variety of competing Peierls and Mott insulators with particular emphasis on the transition between two types of mixed-valent state of Pt^II^ and Pt^IV^ driven by varying interchain hopping integrals and Coulomb interactions.

Photoinduced infrared absorption of quasi-one-dimensional halogen-bridged binuclear transition-metal complexes

We investigate the optical conductivity of photogenerated solitons in quasi-one-dimensional halogen-bridged binuclear transition-metal MMX complexes with particular emphasis on a comparison among the three distinct groups: A_4_[Pt_2_(P_2_O_5_H_2_)_4_X]nH_2_O (X=Cl,Br,I; A=Na,K,NH_4_,...), Pt_2_(RCS_2_)_4_I (R=C_n_H_2n+1_) and Ni_2_(CH_3_CS_2_)_4_I, which exhibit a mixed-valent ground state with the X sublattice dimerized, that with the M_2_ sublattice dimerized and a Mott-Hubbard magnetic ground state, respectively. Soliton-induced absorption spectra for A_4_[Pt_2_(P_2_O_5_H_2_)_4_X]nH_2_O should split into two bands, while that for Pt_2_(RCS_2_)_4_I and Ni_2_(CH_3_CS_2_)_4_I should consist of a single band. The excitonic effect is significant in Ni_2_(CH_3_CS_2_)_4_I.

Fermionic versus bosonic descriptions of one-dimensional spin-gapped antiferromagnets

In terms of spinless fermions and spin waves, we describe magnetic properties of a spin-1/2 ferromagnetic-antiferromagnetic bond-alternating chain which behaves as a Haldane-gap antiferromagnet. On one hand, we employ the Jordan-Wigner transformation and treat the fermionic Hamiltonian within the Hartree-Fock approximation. On the other hand, we employ the Holstein-Primakoff transformation and modify the conventional spin-wave theory so as to restore the sublattice symmetry. We calculate the excitation gap, the specific heat, the magnetic susceptibility, magnetization curves, and the nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate with varying bond alternation. These schemes are further applied to a bond-alternating tetramerized chain which behaves as a ferrimagnet. The fermionic language is particularly stressed as a useful tool to investigate one-dimensional spin-gapped antiferromagnets, while the bosonic one works better for ferrimagnets.

Low-temperature thermodynamics of one-dimensional alternating-spin Heisenberg ferromagnets

Motivated by a novel bimetallic chain compound in which alternating magnetic centers are ferromagnetically coupled, we investigate thermodynamic properties of one-dimensional spin-$(S,s)$ Heisenberg ferromagnets both numerically and analytically. On the one hand, quantum Monte Carlo calculations illuminate the overall thermal behavior. The specific heat may exhibit a double-peaked structure at intermediate temperatures for $S\agt 3s$ in general. On the other hand, a modified spin-wave theory precisely describes the low-temperature properties. Expanding the specific heat and the magnetic susceptibility, we reveal an analogy and a contrast between mixed-spin ferromagnets and ferrimagnets.

Nonlinear lattice relaxation of photoexcited diplatinum-halide chain compounds

In order to reveal the relaxation mechanism of photogenerated charge-transfer excitations in quasi-one-dimensional halogen-bridged diplatinum complexes, we calculate the low-lying adiabatic potential energy surfaces of a one-dimensional extended Peierls-Hubbard model. High-energy excitations above the electron-hole continuum may relax into polarons, while excitons pumped within the optical gap are self-localized and then either decay by luminescence or divide into solitons. Neutral solitons, charged solitons, and polarons may be simultaneously photogenerated in a diplatinum-halide chain, which has never been observed in any conventional platinum-halide chain. Optical conductivity is also simulated along the decay paths for experimental verification.

Modified spin-wave theory of nuclear magnetic relaxation in one-dimensional quantum ferrimagnets: Three-magnon versus Raman processes

Nuclear spin-lattice relaxation in one-dimensional Heisenberg ferrimagnets is studied by means of a modified spin-wave theory. Calculating beyond the first-order mechanism, where a nuclear spin directly interacts with spin waves through the hyperfine coupling, we demonstrate that the exchange-scattering-enhanced three-magnon nuclear relaxation may generally predominate over the Raman one with increasing temperature and decreasing field. Recent proton spin-lattice relaxation-time (T_1_) measurements on the ferrimagnetic chain compound NiCu(C_7_H_6_N_2_O_6_)(H_2_O)_3_2H_2_O suggest that the major contribution to 1/T_1_ be made by the three-magnon scattering.

Effects of edges in spin-1/2 bond-alternating Heisenberg chains: Matrix-product variational approach

We make a matrix-product variational approach to spin-1/2 ferromagnetic-antiferromagnetic bond-alternating chains with anisotropy on their ferromagnetic bonds, especially under the open boundary condition. The rich phase diagram containing the Haldane, large-D, and two types of Neel phases is well reproduced with only two variational parameters. The on-bond anisotropy has a significant effect on the ferromagnetic coupling between neighboring spins and induces novel edge states peculiar to spin-1/2 chains.

Photoinduced Absorption Spectra of Halogen-Bridged Binuclear Metal Complexes: Possible Contrast between R_4_[Pt_2_(P_2_O_5_H_2_)_4_X]nH_2_O and Pt_2_(CH_3_CS_2_)_4_I

The optical conductivity of photogenerated solitons in quasi-one-dimensional halogen-bridged binuclear metal (MMX) complexes is investigated with particular emphasis on a comparison between the two family compounds R_4_[Pt_2_(P_2_O_5_H_2_)_4_X]nH_2_O (X=Cl,Br,I;R=NH_4_,Na,K,...; pop=diphosphonate=P_2_O_5_H_2_^2-^) and Pt_2_(dta)_4_I (dta=dithioacetate=CH_3_CS_2_^-^). Soliton-induced absorption spectra for the pop complexes should split into two bands, while those for the dta complex should consist of a single band.

Soliton-induced optical absorption of halogen-bridged mixed-valence binuclear metal complexes

Employing the one-dimensional single-band extended Peierls-Hubbard model, we investigate optical conductivity for solitonic excitations in halogen-bridged binuclear metal (MMX) complexes. Photoinduced soliton absorption spectra for MMX chains possibly split into two bands, forming a striking contrast to those for conventional mononuclear metal (MX) analogs, due to the broken electron-hole symmetry combined with relevant Coulomb and/or electron-phonon interactions.

Nuclear Spin-Lattice Relaxation in One-Dimensional Heisenberg Ferrimagnets: Three-Magnon versus Raman Processes

Nuclear spin-lattice relaxation in one-dimensional Heisenberg ferrimagnets is studied by means of a modified spin-wave theory. We consider the second-order process, where a nuclear spin flip induces virtual spin waves which are then scattered thermally via the four-magnon exchange interaction, as well as the first-order process, where a nuclear spin directly interacts with spin waves via the hyperfine interaction. We point out a possibility of the three-magnon relaxation process predominating over the Raman one and suggest model experiments.

Bosonic representation of one-dimensional Heisenberg ferrimagnets

The energy structure and the thermodynamics of ferrimagnetic Heisenberg chains of alternating spins S and s are described in terms of the Schwinger bosons and modified spin waves. In the Schwinger representation, we average the local constraints on the bosons and diagonalize the Hamiltonian at the Hartree-Fock level. In the Holstein-Primakoff representation, we optimize the free energy in two different ways introducing an additional constraint on the staggered magnetization. A new modified spin-wave scheme, which employs a Lagrange multiplier keeping the native energy structure free from temperature and thus differs from the original Takahashi Scheme, is particularly stressed as an excellent language to interpret one-dimensional quantum ferrimagnetism. Other types of one-dimensional ferrimagnets and the antiferromagnetic limit S=s are also mentioned.

Static and Dynamic Properties of Antiferromagnetic Heisenberg Ladders: Fermionic versus Bosonic Approaches

In terms of spinless fermions via the Jordan-Wigner transformation along a snake-like path and spin waves modified so as to restore the sublattice symmetry, we investigate static and dynamic properties of two-leg antiferromagnetic Heisenberg ladders. The specific heat is finely reproduced by the spinless fermions, whereas the magnetic susceptibility is well described by the modified spin waves. The nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate is discussed in detail with particular emphasis on its novel field dependence.

Nuclear Magnetic Relaxation in the Haldane-Gap Antiferromagnet Ni(C_2_H_8_N_2_)_2_NO_2_(ClO_4_)

A new theory is proposed to interpret nuclear spin-lattice relaxation-time (T_1_) measurements on the spin-1 quasi-one-dimensional Heisenberg antiferromagnet Ni(C_2_H_8_N_2_)_2_NO_2_(ClO_4_) (NENP). While Sagi and Affleck pioneeringly discussed this subject in terms of field-theoretical languages, there is no theoretical attempt yet to explicitly simulate the novel observations of 1/T_1_ reported by Fujiwara et al.. By means of modified spin waves, we solve the minimum of 1/T_1_ as a function of an applied field, pending for the past decade.
