Intrinsic Spin-Hall Effect in n-Doped Bulk GaAs

We show that the bulk Dresselhauss ($k^3$) spin-orbit coupling term leads to an intrinsic spin-Hall effect in n-doped bulk GaAs, but without the appearance of uniform magnetization. The spin-Hall effect in strained and unstrained bulk GaAs has been recently observed experimentally by Kato {\emph{et. al.}} \cite{kato2004A}. We show that the experimental result is quantitatively consistent with the intrinsic spin-Hall effect due to the Dresselhauss term, when lifetime broadening is taken into account. On the other hand, extrinsic contribution to the spin-Hall effect is several orders of magnitude smaller than the observed effect.

Intrinsic Spin Hall Effect in the Two Dimensional Hole Gas

We show that two types of spin-orbit coupling in the 2 dimensional hole gas (2DHG), with and without inversion symmetry breaking, contribute to the intrinsic spin Hall effect\cite{murakami2003,sinova2003}. Furthermore, the vertex correction due to impurity scattering vanishes in both cases, in sharp contrast to the case of usual Rashba coupling in the electron band. Recently, the spin Hall effect in a hole doped $GaAs$ semiconductor has been observed experimentally by Wunderlich \emph{et al}\cite{wunderlich2004}. From the fact that the life time broadening is smaller than the spin splitting, and the fact impurity vertex corrections vanish in this system, we argue that the observed spin Hall effect should be in the intrinsic regime.

Maxwell Equation for the Coupled Spin-Charge Wave Propagation

We show that the dissipationless spin current in the ground state of the Rashba model gives rise to a reactive coupling between the spin and charge propagation, which is formally identical to the coupling between the electric and the magnetic fields in the 2+1 dimensional Maxwell equation. This analogy leads to a remarkable prediction that a density packet can spontaneously split into two counter propagation packets, each carrying the opposite spins. In a certain parameter regime, the coupled spin and charge wave propagates like a transverse "photon". We propose both optical and purely electronic experiments to detect this effect.

Pair Density Wave in the Pseudogap State of High Temperature Superconductors

Recent scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) experiments of Bi$_{2}$Sr$_{2}$CaCu$_{2}$O$_{8+δ}$ have shown evidence of real-space organization of electronic states at low energies in the pseudogap state. We argue based on symmetry considerations as well as model calculations that the experimentally observed modulations are due to a density wave of d-wave Cooper-pairs without global phase coherence. We show that STM measurements can distinguish a pair-density-wave from more typical electronic modulations such as those due to charge density wave ordering or scattering from an onsite periodic potential.

Semiclassical Time Evolution of the Holes from Luttinger Hamiltonian

We study the semi-classical motion of holes by exact numerical solution of the Luttinger model. The trajectories obtained for the heavy and light holes agree well with the higher order corrections to the abelian and the non-abelian adiabatic theories in Ref. [1] [S. Murakami et al., Science 301, 1378(2003)], respectively. It is found that the hole trajectories contain rapid oscillations reminiscent of the "Zitterbewegung" of relativistic electrons. We also comment on the non-conservation of helicity of the light holes.

Spin Splitting and Spin Current in Strained Bulk Semiconductors

We present a theory for two recent experiments in bulk strained semiconductors \cite{kato1, kato2} and show that a new, previously overlooked, strain spin-orbit coupling term may play a fundamental role. We propose simple experiments that could clarify the origin of strain-induced spin-orbit coupling terms in inversion asymmetric semiconductors. We predict that a uniform magnetization parallel to the electric field will be induced in the samples studied in \cite{kato1, kato2} for specific directions of the applied electric field. We also propose special geometries to detect spin currents in strained semiconductors.

Spin Hall Insulator

Recent theories predict dissipationless spin current induced by an electric field in doped semiconductors. Nevertheless, the charge current is still dissipative in these systems. In this work, we theoretically predict the dissipationless spin Hall effect, without any accompanying charge current, in some classes of band insulators, including zero-gap semiconductors such as HgTe and narrow-gap semiconductors such as PbTe. This effect is similar to the quantum Hall effect in that all the states below the gap contribute and there occurs no dissipation. However the spin Hall conductance is not quantized even in two dimensions. This is the first example of a nontrivial topological structure in a band insulator without any magnetic field.

Global Phase Diagram of the High Tc Cuprates

The high Tc cuprates have a complex phase diagram with many competing phases. We propose a bosonic effective quantum Hamiltonian based on the projected SO(5) model with extended interactions, which can be derived from the microscopic models of the cuprates. The global phase diagram of this model is obtained using mean-field theory and the Quantum Monte Carlo simulation, which is possible because of the absence of the minus sign problem. We show that this single quantum model can account for most salient features observed in the high Tc cuprates, with different families of the cuprates attributed to different traces in the global phase diagram. Experimental consequences are discussed and new theoretical predictions are presented.

Dynamic generation of spin orbit coupling

Spin-orbit coupling plays an important role in determining the properties of solids, and is crucial for spintronics device applications. Conventional spin-orbit coupling arises microscopically from relativistic effects described by the Dirac equation, and is described as a single particle band effect. In this work, we propose a new mechanism in which spin-orbit coupling can be generated dynamically in strongly correlated, non-relativistic systems as the result of fermi surface instabilities in higher angular momentum channels. Various known forms of spin-orbit couplings can emerge in these new phases, and their magnitudes can be continuously tuned by temperature or other quantum parameters.

SU(2) Non-Abelian Holonomy and Dissipationless Spin Current in Semiconductors

Following our previous work [S. Murakami, N. Nagaosa, S. C. Zhang, Science 301, 1348 (2003)] on the dissipationless quantum spin current, we present an exact quantum mechanical calculation of this novel effect based on the linear response theory and the Kubo formula. We show that it is possibxle to define an exactly conserved spin current, even in the presence of the spin-orbit coupling in the Luttinger Hamiltonian of p-type semiconductors. The light- and the heavy-hole bands form two Kramers doublets, and an SU(2) non-abelian gauge field acts naturally on each of the doublets. This quantum holonomy gives rise to a monopole structure in momentum space, whose curvature tensor directly leads to the novel dissipationless spin Hall effect, i.e., a transverse spin current is generated by an electric field. The result obtained in the current work gives a quantum correction to the spin current obtained in the previous semiclassical approximation.

SO(5) Theory of Antiferromagnetism and Superconductivity

Antiferromagnetism and superconductivity are both fundamental and common states of matter. In many strongly correlated systems, including the high Tc cuprates, the heavy fermion compounds and the organic superconductors, they occur next to each other in the phase diagram and influence each other's physical properties. The SO(5) theory unifies these two basic states of matter by a symmetry principle and describes their rich phenomenology through a single low energy effective model. In this paper, we review the framework of the SO(5) theory, and its detailed comparison with numerical and experimental results.

Current Carrying Ground State in a Bi-layer Model

Strongly interacting systems have been conjectured to spontaneously develop current carrying ground states under certain conditions. We conclusively demonstrate the existence of a commensurate staggered interlayer current phase in a bi-layer model by using the recently discovered quantum Monte-Carlo algorithm without the sign problem. A pseudospin SU(2) algebra and the corresponding anisotropic spin-1 Heisenberg model are constructed to show the competition among the staggered interlayer current, rung singlet and charge density wave phases.

Quantitative Test of SO(5) Symmetry in the Vortex State of $Nd_{1.85}Ce_{0.15}CuO_4$

By numerically solving models with competing superconducting and antiferromagnetic orders, we study the magnetic field dependence of the antiferromagnetic moment in both the weak and strong field regimes. Through a omparison with the neutron scattering results of Kang et al and Matsuura et al.on $Nd_{1.85}Ce_{0.15}CuO_4$, we conclude that this system is close to a SO(5) symmetric critical point. We also make a quantitative prediction on increasing the upper critical field $B_{c2}$ and the superconducting transition temperature $T_c$ by applying an in-plane magnetic field.

Vortex configurations of bosons in an optical lattice

The single vortex problem in a strongly correlated bosonic system is investigated self-consistently within the mean-field theory of the Bose-Hubbard model. Near the superfluid-Mott transition, the vortex core has a tendency toward the Mott-insulating phase, with the core particle density approaching the nearest commensurate value. If the nearest neighbor repulsion exists, the charge density wave order may develop locally in the core. The evolution of the vortex configuration from the strong to weak coupling regions is studied. This phenomenon can be observed in systems of rotating ultra-cold atoms in optical lattices and Josephson junction arrays

Non-abelian Berry's phase and Chern numbers in higher spin pairing condensates

We show that the non-Abelian Berry phase emerges naturally in the s-wave and spin quintet pairing channel of spin-3/2 fermions. The topological structure of this pairing condensate is characterized by the second Chern number. This topological structure can be realized in ultra-cold atomic systems and in solid state systems with at least two Kramers doublets.

Dissipationless Spin Current in Anisotropic p-Doped Semiconductors

Recently, dissipationless spin current has been predicted for the p-doped semiconductors with spin-orbit coupling. Here we investigate the effect of spherical symmetry breaking on the dissipationless spin current, and obtain values of the intrinsic spin Hall conductivity for realistic semiconductor band structures with cubic symmetry.

Mang et al. report the observation of a cubic (Nd,Ce)2O3 impurity phase grown epitaxially in annealed samples of electron-doped Nd2-xCexCuO4 (NCCO) and argue that our observed magnetic scattering in NCCO [Nature 423,522(2003)]is due entirely to (Nd,Ce)2O3. Here we show why this is incorrect.

Scaling properties of the projected SO(5) model in three dimensions

We study the scaling properties of the quantum ``projected'' SO(5) model in three dimensions by means of a highly accurate Quantum-Monte-Carlo analysis. Within the parameter regime studied (temperature and system size), we show that the scaling behavior is consistent with a SO(5)-symmetric critical behavior in a relative extendent transient regime. This holds both when the symmetry breaking is caused by quantum fluctuations only as well as when also the static (mean-field) symmetry is moderately broken. We argue that possible departure away from the SO(5)-symmetric scaling occurs only in an extremely narrow parameter regime, which is inaccessible both experimentally and numerically.
