Emergent Symmetry in Quantum Phase Transitions: From Deconfined Quantum Critical Point to Gapless Quantum Spin Liquid

The emergence of exotic quantum phenomena in frustrated magnets is rapidly driving the development of quantum many-body physics, raising fundamental questions on the nature of quantum phase transitions. Here we unveil the behaviour of emergent symmetry involving two extraordinarily representative phenomena, i.e., the deconfined quantum critical point (DQCP) and the quantum spin liquid (QSL) state. Via large-scale tensor network simulations, we study a spatially anisotropic spin-1/2 square-lattice frustrated antiferromagnetic (AFM) model, namely the $J_{1x}$-$J_{1y}$-$J_2$ model, which contains anisotropic nearest-neighbor couplings $J_{1x}$, $J_{1y}$ and the next nearest neighbor coupling $J_2$. For small $J_{1y}/J_{1x}$, by tuning $J_2$, a direct continuous transition between the AFM and valence bond solid phase is observed.(Of course, the possibility of weakly first order transition can not be fully excluded.) With growing $J_{1y}/J_{1x}$, a gapless QSL phase gradually emerges between the AFM and VBS phases. We observe an emergent O(4) symmetry along the AFM--VBS transition line, which is consistent with the prediction of DQCP theory. Most surprisingly, we find that such an emergent O(4) symmetry holds for the whole QSL--VBS transition line as well. These findings reveal the intrinsic relationship between the QSL and DQCP from categorical symmetry point of view, and strongly constrain the quantum field theory description of the QSL phase. The phase diagram and critical exponents presented in this paper are of direct relevance to future experiments on frustrated magnets and cold atom systems.

Haldane phases and phase diagrams of the S = 3/2, 1 bilinear-biquadratic Heisenberg model on the orthogonal dimer chain

We systematically study the effects of higher-order interactions on the S = 3/2, 1 orthogonal dimer chains using exact diagonalization and density matrix renormalization group. Due to frustration and higher spin, there are rich quantum phases, including three Haldane phases, two gapless phases and several magnetically ordered phases. To characterize these phases and their phase transitions, we study various physical quantities such as energy gap, energy level crossing, fidelity susceptibility, spin correlation, entanglement spectrum and central charge. According to our calculations, the biquadratic term can enhance the Haldane phase regions. In particular, we numerically identify that a Haldane phase in S = 3/2 case is adiabatically connected to the exact AKLT point when adding bicubic term. Our study on the orthogonal dimer model, which is a 1D version of Shastry-Sutherland model, provides insights into understanding the possible S = 3/2, 1 Haldane phases in quasi-1D and 2D frustrated magnetic materials.

Nematic chiral spin liquid in a Kitaev magnet under external magnetic field

The possible existence of a quantum spin liquid (QSL) phase, an exotic state of matter with long-range quantum entanglement and fractionalized excitations, in $α$-RuCl$_3$ has sparked widespread interests in exploring QSLs in various Kitaev models under magnetic fields. Recently, a $K$-$J$-$Γ$-$Γ'$ model has been proposed to accurately describe the compound by fitting the measured thermodynamic data, where $J$ is Heisenberg interaction, and $Γ$, $Γ'$ are off-diagonal exchanges on top of the dominant Kitaev coupling $K$. Based on this effective model, an intermediate QSL phase in presence of an out-of-plane fields along the $[1 1 1]$ direction, between the low-field zigzag order and high-field polarized phase, has been predicted. By combining density matrix renormalization group (DMRG), exponential tensor renormalization group (XTRG), and variational Monte Carlo (VMC) calculations, we address the nature of this QSL phase in the honeycomb $K$-$J$-$Γ$-$Γ'$ model under the $[1 1 1]$-direction field. Our DMRG calculations find the algebraic-like decay of spin correlation function, the finite spin scalar chiral order, and lattice nematic order. Together with the XTRG results of power-law specific heat at low temperature, our findings naturally suggest a gapless nematic chiral spin liquid. On the other hand, our VMC study finds a gapped nematic chiral spin liquid with the variational energy very close to that obtained in DMRG. As VMC finds a very small gap that is beyond the current resolution of both ground-state DMRG and finite-temperature XTRG calculations on finite-width cylinders, we resort the full clarification for the nature of the intermediate QSL to future studies. Lastly, we discuss the implications of our results to the recent experiment on $α$-RuCl$_3$ and the QSL-like phase in a similar $K$-$Γ$-$Γ'$ model.

Quantum Phase Diagram and Spontaneously Emergent Topological Chiral Superconductivity in Doped Triangular-Lattice Mott Insulators

The topological superconducting state is a highly sought-after quantum state hosting topological order and Majorana excitations. In this work, we explore the mechanism to realize the topological superconductivity (TSC) in the doped Mott insulators with time-reversal symmetry (TRS). Through large-scale density matrix renormalization group study of an extended triangular-lattice $t$-$J$ model on the six- and eight-leg cylinders, we identify a $d+id$-wave chiral TSC with spontaneous TRS breaking, which is characterized by a Chern number $C=2$ and quasi-long-range superconducting order. We map out the quantum phase diagram by tuning the next-nearest-neighbor (NNN) electron hopping and spin interaction. In the weaker NNN-coupling regime, we identify a pseudogaplike phase with a charge stripe order coexisting with fluctuating superconductivity, which can be tuned into $d$-wave superconductivity by increasing the doping level and system width. The TSC emerges in the intermediate-coupling regime, which has a transition to a $d$-wave superconducting phase with larger NNN couplings. The emergence of the TSC is driven by geometrical frustrations and hole dynamics which suppress spin correlation and charge order, leading to a topological quantum phase transition.

Ground-state phase diagram of the extended two-leg $t$-$J$ ladder

Inspired by the observation of a robust $d$-wave superconducting phase driven by tuning the next-nearest-neighbor (NNN) electron hopping in recent density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) studies of six- and eight-leg $t$-$J$ model, we systematically study the phase diagram of the two-leg $t$-$J$ ladder with the NNN couplings (including NNN hopping and spin interaction) in a large region of doping level, by means of the DMRG calculations. Upon doping from half filling, we identify the Luther-Emery liquid (LEL) phase, which can be distinguished as the pairing-dominant and charge density-dominant regime by comparing the Luttinger parameter $K_ρ$. With the growing NNN couplings, pairing correlations are enhanced and correspondingly $K_ρ$ increases, driving the system from the density-dominant to the pairing-dominant regime. In the Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid (TLL) phase in the larger doping region, we identify two TLL regimes with different features of charge density correlation. At the quarter filling ($1/2$ doping level), we find that the strong dimer orders of bond energy in the open system actually decay algebraically and thus do not indicate a spontaneous translational symmetry breaking. Our results show that in the LEL phase of the two-leg ladder, the NNN couplings seem to play the similar role as that on the wider $t$-$J$ cylinder, and studies on this more accessible system can be helpful towards understanding the emergence of the remarkable $d$-wave superconducting phase on the wider system.

Characterizing Random-singlet State in Two-dimensional Frustrated Quantum Magnets and Implications for the Double Perovskite Sr$_2$CuTe$_{1-x}$W$_{x}$O$_6$

Motivated by experimental observation of the non-magnetic phase in the compounds with frustration and disorder, we study the ground state of the spin-$1/2$ square-lattice Heisenberg model with randomly distributed nearest-neighbor $J_1$ and next-nearest-neighbor $J_2$ couplings. By using the density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) calculation on cylinder system with circumference up to $10$ lattice sites, we identify a disordered phase between the Néel and stripe magnetic phase with growing $J_2 / J_1$ in the presence of strong bond randomness. The vanished spin-freezing parameter indicates the absence of spin glass order. The large-scale DMRG results unveil the size-scaling behaviors of the spin-freezing parameter, the power-law decay of the average spin correlation, and the exponential decay of the typical spin correlation, which all agree with the corresponding behavior in the one-dimensional random singlet (RS) state and characterize the RS nature of this disordered phase. The DMRG simulation also provides insights and opportunities for characterizing a class of non-magnetic states in two-dimensional frustrated magnets with disorder. We also compare with existing experiments and suggest more measurements for understanding the spin-liquid-like behaviors in the double perovskite Sr$_2$CuTe$_{1-x}$W$_{x}$O$_6$.

Ultrafast laser-driven dynamics in metal-insulator interface

The nearly free electron metal next to a localized Mott insulating state has been recently proposed as a way to probe Kondo lattice physics and to gain insight into how the two extremes of localized and delocalized electron states interact (Sunko, et al, Science advances 6, 2020). Although high harmonic generation has been used extensively to investigate the gas phase, its extension to solids is relatively recent, and has not yet been applied to interfaces. Here, we investigate the field-induced dielectric break-down at the Mott-insulator/metal interface using high harmonic generation, emitted when the interface is subjected to an ultrafast laser pulse. We show that the intensity of high harmonic emission correlates closely with doublon production and the corresponding loss of short-range anti-ferromagnetic order. For strong interlayer coupling, the harmonic intensity is defined by a phase transition between states that do not exist in a pure Mott insulator case. For weak interlayer coupling, the threshold for dielectric breakdown is considerably lowered due to the presence of a metallic layer. This suggests that interlayer coupling can be used as an additional knob to control magnetic insulator break-down, with implications for using Mott insulators as memristors in neuromorphic circuits.

Interaction-driven quantum anomalous Hall insulator in Dirac semimetal

The interaction-driven quantum anomalous Hall (QAH) insulator has been sought for a long time in a Dirac semimetal with linear band touching points at the Fermi level. By combining exact diagonalization, density matrix renormalization group, and analytical methods, we study a spinless fermion system on the checkerboard lattice with two fold rotational symmetry, which realizes two Dirac band touching points in the absence of interaction. At weak coupling, the Dirac semimetal is stable. At a finite density-density repulsive interaction, we analyze possible symmetry broken states, and find that an QAH state is stabilized when the interaction strength exceeds the energy scale controlling the separation between the Dirac points. Through numerical simulations, we verify the existence of the QAH phase with spontaneous time-reversal symmetry breaking and quantized Chern number $C = 1$.

Quantum Spin Liquid with Emergent Chiral Order in the Triangular-lattice Hubbard Model

The interplay between spin frustration and charge fluctuation gives rise to an exotic quantum state in the intermediate-interaction regime of the half-filled triangular-lattice Hubbard model, while the nature of the state is under debate. Using the density matrix renormalization group with SU(2)$_{\rm{spin}} \otimes $U(1)$_{\rm{charge}}$ symmetries implemented, we study the triangular-lattice Hubbard model defined on the long cylinder geometry up to circumference $W=6$. A gapped quantum spin liquid, with on-site interaction $9 \lesssim U / t \lesssim 10.75$, is identified between the metallic and the antiferromagnetic Mott insulating phases. In particular, we find that this spin liquid develops a robust long-range spin scalar-chiral correlation as the system length $L$ increases, which unambiguously unveils the spontaneous time-reversal symmetry breaking. In addition, the degeneracy of the entanglement spectrum supports symmetry fractionalization and spinon edge modes in the obtained ground state. The possible origin of chiral order in this intermediate spin liquid and its relation to the rotonlike excitations have also been discussed.

Phase diagram and magnetic excitations of $J_1$-$J_3$ Heisenberg model on the square lattice

We study the phase diagram and the dynamical spin structure factor of the spin-1/2 J1-J3 Heisenberg model on the square lattice using density matrix renormalization group, exact diagonalization (ED), and cluster perturbation theory (CPT). By extrapolating the order parameters and studying the level crossings of the low-lying energy and entanglement spectra, we obtain the phase diagram of this model and identify a narrow region of quantum spin liquid (QSL) phase followed by a plaquette valence-bond solid (PVBS) state in the intermediate region, whose nature has been controversial for many years. More importantly, we use CPT and ED to study the dynamical spin structure factor in the QSL and the PVBS phase. In the QSL phase, the high-energy magnon mode completely turns into some dispersive weak excitations around the X and M points. For the PVBS phase, the low-energy spectrum is characterized by a gapped triplet excitation, and at the high energy, we find another branch of dispersive excitation with broad continua, which is unlike the plaquette phase in the 2x2 checkerboard model. In the latter case, the second branch of excitation is nearly flat due to the weak effective interactions between the local excitations of the plaquettes. And in the J1-J3 Heisenberg model, the uniform interactions and the spontaneously translational symmetry breaking of the PVBS phase make the difference in the excitation spectra.

Coexistence of non-Abelian chiral spin liquid and magnetic order in a spin-1 antiferromagnet

We study the ground-state properties of a spin-1 Heisenberg model on a square lattice with the first- and second-nearest-neighbor antiferromagnetic couplings $J_1$ and $J_2$ and a three-spin scalar chirality term $J_χ$. Using the density matrix renormalization group calculation, we map out a global phase diagram including various magnetic order phases and an emergent quantum spin liquid phase. The nature of the spin liquid is identified as a bosonic non-Abelian Moore-Read state from the fingerprint of the entanglement spectra and identification of a full set of topological sectors. We further unveil a stripe magnetic order coexisting with this spin liquid. Our results not only establish a rare example of non-Abelian spin liquids in simple spin systems but also demonstrate the coexistence of fractionalized excitations and magnetic order beyond mean-field descriptions.

The emergence of gapless quantum spin liquid from deconfined quantum critical point

A quantum spin liquid (QSL) is a novel phase of matter with long-range entanglement where localized spins are highly correlated with the vanishing of magnetic order. Such exotic quantum states provide the opportunities to develop new theoretical frameworks for many-body physics and have the potential application in realizing robust quantum computations. Here we show that a gapless QSL can naturally emerge from a deconfined quantum critical point (DQCP), which is originally proposed to describe Landau forbidden continuous phase transition between antiferromagnetic (AFM) and valence-bond solid (VBS) phases. Via large-scale tensor network simulations of a square-lattice spin-1/2 frustrated Heisenberg model, both QSL state and DQCP-type AFM-VBS transition are observed. With tuning coupling constants, the AFM-VBS transition vanishes and instead, a gapless QSL phase gradually develops in between. Remarkably, along the phase boundaries of AFM-QSL and QSL-VBS transitions, we always observe the same correlation length exponents $ν\approx 1.0$, which is intrinsically different from the one of the DQCP-type transition, indicating new types of universality classes. Our results explicitly demonstrate a new scenario for understanding the emergence of gapless QSL from an underlying DQCP. The discovered QSL phase survives in a large region of tuning parameters and we expect its experimental realizations in solid state materials or quantum simulators.

Gapless quantum spin liquid and global phase diagram of the spin-1/2 $J_1$-$J_2$ square antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model

The nature of the zero-temperature phase diagram of the spin-$1/2$ $J_1$-$J_2$ Heisenberg model on a square lattice has been debated in the past three decades, which may hold the key to understand high temperature superconductivity. By using the state-of-the-art tensor network method, specifically, the finite projected entangled pair state (PEPS) algorithm, to simulate the global phase diagram the $J_1$-$J_2$ Heisenberg model up to $24\times 24$ sites, we provide very solid evidences to show that the nature of the intermediate nonmagnetic phase is a gapless quantum spin liquid (QSL), whose spin-spin and dimer-dimer correlations both decay with a power law behavior. There also exists a valence-bond solid (VBS) phase in a very narrow region $0.56\lesssim J_2/J_1\leq0.61$ before the system enters the well known collinear antiferromagnetic phase. The physical nature of the discovered gapless QSL and potential experimental implications are also addressed. We stress that we make the first detailed comparison between the results of PEPS and the well-established density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) method through one-to-one direct benchmark for small system sizes, and thus give rise to a very solid PEPS calculation beyond DMRG. Our numerical evidences explicitly demonstrate the huge power of PEPS for precisely capturing long-range physcis for highly frustrated systems, and also demonstrate the finite PEPS method is a very powerful approach to study strongly corrleated quantum many-body problems.

Accurate simulation for finite projected entangled pair states in two dimensions

Based on the scheme of variational Monte Carlo sampling, we develop an accurate and efficient two-dimensional tensor-network algorithm to simulate quantum lattice models. We find that Monte Carlo sampling shows huge advantages in dealing with finite projected entangled pair states, which allows significantly enlarged system size and improves the accuracy of tensor network simulation. We demonstrate our method on the square-lattice antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model up to $32 \times 32$ sites, as well as a highly frustrated $J_1-J_2$ model up to $24\times 24$ sites. The results, including ground state energy and spin correlations, are in excellent agreement with those of the available quantum Monte Carlo or density matrix renormalization group methods. Therefore, our method substantially advances the calculation of 2D tensor networks for finite systems, and potentially opens a new door towards resolving many challenging strongly correlated quantum many-body problems.

Identification of Magnetic Interactions and High-field Quantum Spin Liquid in $α$-RuCl$_3$

The frustrated magnet $α$-RuCl$_3$ constitutes a fascinating quantum material platform that harbors the intriguing Kitaev physics. However, a consensus on its intricate spin interactions and field-induced quantum phases has not been reached yet. Here we exploit multiple state-of-the-art many-body methods and determine the microscopic spin model that quantitatively explains major observations in $α$-RuCl$_3$, including the zigzag order, double-peak specific heat, magnetic anisotropy, and the characteristic M-star dynamical spin structure, etc. According to our model simulations, the in-plane field drives the system into the polarized phase at about 7 T and a thermal fractionalization occurs at finite temperature, reconciling observations in different experiments. Under out-of-plane fields, the zigzag order is suppressed at 35 T, above which, and below a polarization field of 100 T level, there emerges a field-induced quantum spin liquid. The fractional entropy and algebraic low-temperature specific heat unveil the nature of a gapless spin liquid, which can be explored in high-field measurements on $α$-RuCl$_3$.

Quantum Transitions of Nematic Phases in a Spin-$1$ Bilinear-Biquadratic Model and Their Implications for FeSe

Since its discovery, iron-based superconductivity has been known to develop near an antiferromagnetic order, but this paradigm fails in the iron chalcogenide FeSe, whose single-layer version holds the record for the highest superconducting transition temperature in the iron-based superconductors. The striking puzzle that FeSe displays nematic order (spontaneously broken lattice rotational symmetry) while being non-magnetic, has led to several competing proposals for its origin in terms of either the $3d$-electron's orbital degrees of freedom or spin physics in the form of frustrated magnetism. Here we argue that the phase diagram of FeSe under pressure could be qualitatively described by a quantum spin model with highly frustrated interactions. We implement both the site-factorized wave-function analysis and the large-scale density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) in cylinders to study the spin-$1$ bilinear-biquadratic model on the square lattice, and identify quantum transitions from the well-known $(π,0)$ antiferromagnetic state to an exotic $(π,0)$ antiferroquadrupolar order, either directly or through a $(π/2,π)$ antiferromagnetic state. These many phases, while distinct, are all nematic. We also discuss our theoretical ground-state phase diagram for the understanding of the experimental low-temperature phase diagram obtained by the NMR [P. S. Wang {\it et al.}, Phys. Rev. Lett. 117, 237001 (2016)] and X-ray scattering [K. Kothapalli {\it et al.}, Nature Communications 7, 12728 (2016)] measurements in pressurized FeSe. Our results suggest that superconductivity in a wide range of iron-based materials has a common origin in the antiferromagnetic correlations of strongly correlated electrons.

Universal Thermodynamics in the Kitaev Fractional Liquid

In the Kitaev honeycomb model, the quantum spin fractionalizes into itinerant Majorana and gauge flux spontaneously upon cooling, leading to rich experimental ramifications at finite temperature and an upsurge of research interest. In this work, we employ the exponential tensor renormalization group approach to explore the Kitaev model under various perturbations, including the external fields, Heisenberg, and the off-diagonal couplings that are common in the Kitaev materials. Through large-scale manybody calculations, we find a Kitaev fractional liquid at intermediate temperature that is robust against perturbations. The fractional liquid exhibits universal thermodynamic behaviors, including the fractional thermal entropy, metallic specific heat, and an intermediate-temperature Curie law of magnetic susceptibility. The emergent universal susceptibility behavior, with a modified Curie constant, can be ascribed to the strongly fluctuating $\mathbb{Z}_2$ fluxes as well as the extremely short-ranged and bond-directional spin correlations. With this insight, we revisit the susceptibility measurements of Na$_2$IrO$_3$ and $α$-RuCl$_3$, and find evident signatures of finite-temperature fractionalization and ferromagnetic Kitaev couplings. Moreover, the peculiar spin correlation in the fractional liquid corresponds to a stripy structure factor which rotates in the extended Brillouin zone as the spin component changes. Therefore, our findings encourage future experimental exploration of fractional liquid in the Kitaev materials by thermodynamic measurements and spin-resolved structure factor probes.

Density Matrix Renormalization Group Study of Nematicity in Two Dimensions: Application to a Spin-$1$ Bilinear-Biquadratic Model on the Square Lattice

Nematic order is an exotic property observed in several strongly correlated systems, such as the iron-based superconductors. Using large-scale density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) techniques, we study at zero-temperature the nematic spin liquid that competes with spin dipolar and quadrupolar orders. We use these nematic orders to characterize different quantum phases and quantum phase transitions. More specifically, we study a spin-$1$ bilinear-biquadratic Heisenberg model on the square lattice with couplings beyond nearest neighbors. We focus on parameter regions around the highly symmetric $SU(3)$ point where the bilinear and biquadratic interactions are equal. With growing further-neighbor biquadratic interactions, we identify different spin dipolar and quadrupolar orders. We find that the DMRG results on cylindrical geometries correctly detect nematicity in different quantum states and accurately characterize the quantum phase transitions among them. Therefore, spin-driven nematicity -- here defined as the spontaneous breaking of the lattice invariance under a 90$^o$ rotation -- is an order parameter which can be studied directly in DMRG calculations in two dimensions in different quantum states.
