Observation of Single Dirac Cone Topological Surface State in Compounds TlBiTe2 and TlBiSe2 from a New Topological Insulator Family

Angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) studies were performed on two compounds (TlBiTe$_2$ and TlBiSe$_2$) from a recently proposed three dimensional topological insulator family in Thallium-based III-V-VI$_2$ ternary chalcogenides. For both materials, we show that the electronic band structures are in broad agreement with the $ab$ $initio$ calculations; by surveying over the entire surface Brillouin zone (BZ), we demonstrate that there is a single Dirac cone reside at the center of BZ, indicating its topological non-triviality. For TlBiSe$_2$, the observed Dirac point resides at the top of the bulk valance band, making it a large gap ($\geq$200$meV$) topological insulator; while for TlBiTe$_2$, we found there exist a negative indirect gap between the bulk conduction band at $M$ point and the bulk valance band near $Γ$, making it a semi-metal at proper doping. Interestingly, the unique band structures of TlBiTe$_2$ we observed further suggest TlBiTe$_2$ may be a candidate for topological superconductors.

Dynamical layer decoupling in a stripe-ordered, high T_c superconductor

In the stripe-ordered state of a strongly-correlated two-dimensional electronic system, under a set of special circumstances, the superconducting condensate, like the magnetic order, can occur at a non-zero wave-vector corresponding to a spatial period double that of the charge order. In this case, the Josephson coupling between near neighbor planes, especially in a crystal with the special structure of La_{2-x}Ba_xCuO_4, vanishes identically. We propose that this is the underlying cause of the dynamical decoupling of the layers recently observed in transport measurements at x=1/8.

Experimental Observation of the Inverse Spin Hall Effect at Room Temperature

We observe the inverse spin Hall effect in a two-dimensional electron gas confined in AlGaAs/InGaAs quantum wells. Specifically, we find that an inhomogeneous spin density induced by the optical injection gives rise an electric current transverse to both the spin polarization and its gradient. The spin Hall conductivity can be inferred from such a measurement through the Einstein relation and the Onsager relation, and is found to have the order of magnitude of $0.5(e^{2}/h)$. The observation is made at the room temperature and in samples with macroscopic sizes, suggesting that the inverse spin Hall effect is a robust macroscopic transport phenomenon.

Effective Field Theory of Electron Motion in the Presence of Random Magnetic Flux

We construct a nonlinear $σ$ model to describe a system of non-interacting electrons propagating in the presence of random magnetic flux. We find a term describing the long ranged logarithmic interaction between the topological density of the non-linear sigma model, and argue that this could give rise to a Kosterlitz-Thouless transition from the localized phase to a phase with power law correlations and continuously varying conductances. We provide a physical interpretation of our results in terms of the scattering of edge states of the magnetic domains in different regions.
