Irregular cusps of orthogonal modular varieties

Irregular cusp of an orthogonal modular variety is a cusp where the lattice for Fourier expansion is strictly smaller than the lattice of translation. Presence of such a cusp affects the study of pluricanonical forms on the modular variety using modular forms. We study toroidal compactification over an irregular cusp, and clarify there the cusp form criterion for the calculation of Kodaira dimension. At the same time, we show that irregular cusps do not arise frequently: besides the cases when the group is neat or contains -1, we prove that the stable orthogonal groups of most (but not all) even lattices have no irregular cusp.

Kodaira dimension of universal holomorphic symplectic varieties

We prove that the Kodaira dimension of the n-fold universal family of lattice-polarized holomorphic symplectic varieties with dominant and generically finite period map stabilizes to the moduli number when n is sufficiently large. Then we study the transition of Kodaira dimension explicitly, from negative to nonnegative, for known explicit families of polarized symplectic varieties. In particular, we determine the exact transition point in the cases of Beauville-Donagi and Debarre-Voisin, where the Borcherds Phi_{12} form plays a crucial role.

Universal abelian variety and Siegel modular forms

We prove that the ring of Siegel modular forms of weight divisible by g+n+1 is isomorphic to the ring of (log) pluricanonical forms on the n-fold Kuga family of abelian varieties and its certain compactifications, for every arithmetic group for a symplectic form of rank 2g>2. We also give applications to the Kodaira dimension of the Kuga variety. In most cases, the Kuga variety has canonical singularities.

Quasi-pullback of Borcherds products

Quasi-pullback of Borcherds products is an operation of renormalized restriction. It produces a meromorphic modular form on a lower dimensional symmetric domain which is again a Borcherds product. We give an explicit formula for the weakly holomorphic modular form of Weil representation type whose Borcherds lift is the quasi-pullback of the given Borcherds product.

Rational equivalence of cusps

We prove that two cusps of the same dimension in the Baily-Borel compactification of some classical series of modular varieties are linearly dependent in the rational Chow group of the compactification. This gives a higher dimensional analogue of the Manin-Drinfeld theorem. As a consequence, we obtain a higher dimensional generalization of modular units as higher Chow cycles on the modular variety.

K3 surfaces with involution, equivariant analytic torsion, and automorphic forms on the moduli space IV: the structure of invariant

A holomorphic torsion invariant of K3 surfaces with involution was introduced by the second-named author. In this paper, we completely determine its structure as an automorphic function on the moduli space of such K3 surfaces. On every component of the moduli space, it is expressed as the product of an explicit Borcherds lift and a classical Siegel modular form. We also introduce its twisted version. We prove its modularity and a certain uniqueness of the modular form corresponding to the twisted holomorphic torsion invariant. This is used to study an equivariant analogue of Borcherds' conjecture.

Torsion 1-cycles and the coniveau spectral sequence

We relate the torsion part of the Abel-Jacobi kernel in the Griffiths group of 1-cycles to a birational invariant analogous to the degree 4 unramified cohomology and an invariant associated to the generalized Hodge conjecture in degree 2dim(X)-3. We also describe in terms of H-cohomology the Griffiths group of 1-cycles and the group of torsion cycles algebraically equivalent to zero of arbitrary dimension.

Equivariant Gauss sum of finite quadratic forms

The classical quadratic Gauss sum can be thought of as an exponential sum attached to a quadratic form on a cyclic group. We introduce an equivariant version of Gauss sum for arbitrary finite quadratic forms, which is an exponential sum twisted by the action of the orthogonal group. We prove that simple arithmetic formulae hold for some basic classes of quadratic forms. In application, such invariant appears in the dimension formula for certain vector-valued modular forms.

On the Kodaira dimension of orthogonal modular varieties

We prove that up to scaling there are only finitely many integral lattices L of signature (2,n) with n>20 or n=17 such that the modular variety defined by the orthogonal group of L is not of general type. In particular, when n>107, every modular variety defined by an arithmetic group for a rational quadratic form of signature (2,n) is of general type. We also obtain similar finiteness in n>8 for the stable orthogonal groups. As a byproduct we derive finiteness of lattices admitting reflective modular form of bounded vanishing order, which proves a conjecture of Gritsenko and Nikulin.

Finiteness of 2-reflective lattices of signature (2,n)

A modular form for an even lattice L of signature (2,n) is said to be 2-reflective if its zero divisor is set-theoretically contained in the Heegner divisor defined by the (-2)-vectors in L. We prove that there are only finitely many even lattices with n>6 which admit 2-reflective modular forms. In particular, there is no such lattice in n>25 except the even unimodular lattice of signature (2,26). This proves a conjecture of Gritsenko and Nikulin in the range n>6.

We prove that the moduli space of tetragonal curves of genus g>6 is rational when g is congruent to 1, 2, 5, 6, 9, 10 modulo 12 and not equal to 9, 45.
