Long-Range Coherence and Multiple Steady States in a Lossy Qubit Array

We show that a simple experimental setting of a locally pumped and lossy array of two-level quantum systems can stabilize states with strong long-range coherence. Indeed, by explicit analytic construction, we show there is an extensive set of steady-state density operators, from minimally to maximally entangled, despite this being an interacting open many-body problem. Such nonequilibrium steady states arise from a hidden symmetry that stabilizes Bell pairs over arbitrarily long distances, with unique experimental signatures. We demonstrate a protocol by which one can selectively prepare these states using dissipation. Our findings are accessible in present-day experiments.

Out-of-equilibrium steady states of a locally driven lossy qubit array

We find a rich variety of counterintuitive features in the steady states of a qubit array coupled to a dissipative source and sink at two arbitrary sites, using a master equation approach. We show there are setups where increasing the pump and loss rates establishes long-range coherence. At sufficiently strong dissipation, the source or sink effectively generates correlation between its neighboring sites, leading to a striking density-wave order for a class of "resonant" geometries. This effect can be used more widely to engineer nonequilibrium phases. We show the steady states are generically distinct for hard-core bosons and free fermions, and differ significantly from the ones found before in special cases. They are explained by generally applicable ansatzes for the long-time dynamics at weak and strong dissipation. Our findings are relevant for existing photonic setups.

Critical Response of a Quantum van der Pol Oscillator

Classical dynamical systems close to a critical point are known to act as efficient sensors due to a strongly nonlinear response. We explore such systems in the quantum regime by modeling a quantum version of a driven van der Pol oscillator. We find the classical response survives down to one excitation quantum. At very weak drives, genuine quantum features arise, including diverging and negative susceptibilities. Further, the linear response is greatly enhanced by using a strong incoherent pump. These results are largely generic and can be probed in current experimental platforms suited for quantum sensing.

Coherent generation of photonic fractional quantum Hall states in a cavity and the search for anyonic quasiparticles

We present and analyze a protocol in which polaritons in a noncoplanar optical cavity form fractional quantum Hall states. We model the formation of these states and present techniques for subsequently creating anyons and measuring their fractional exchange statistics. In this protocol, we use a rapid adiabatic passage scheme to sequentially add polaritons to the system, such that the system is coherently driven from $n$- to $(n+1)$-particle Laughlin states. Quasiholes are created by slowly moving local pinning potentials in from outside the cloud. They are braided by dragging the pinning centers around one another, and the resulting phases are measured interferometrically. The most technically challenging issue with implementing our procedure is that maintaining adiabaticity and coherence requires that the two-particle interaction energy $V_0$ be sufficiently large compared to the single-polariton decay rate $γ$, $V_0 /γ\gg 10 N^2 \ln N$, where $N$ is the number of particles in the target state. While this condition is very demanding for present-day experiments where $V_0 /γ\sim 50$, our protocol presents a significant advance over the existing protocols in the literature.

Collective modes of a soliton train in a Fermi superfluid

We characterize the collective modes of a soliton train in a quasi-one-dimensional Fermi superfluid, using a mean-field formalism. In addition to the expected Goldstone and Higgs modes, we find novel long-lived gapped modes associated with oscillations of the soliton cores. The soliton train has an instability that depends strongly on the interaction strength and the spacing of solitons. It can be stabilized by filling each soliton with an unpaired fermion, thus forming a commensurate Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) phase. We find that such a state is always dynamically stable, which paves the way for realizing long-lived FFLO states in experiments via phase imprinting.

Protocol to engineer Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov states in a cold Fermi gas

We propose a two-step experimental protocol to directly engineer Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) states in a cold two-component Fermi gas loaded into a quasi-one-dimensional trap. First, one uses phase imprinting to create a train of domain walls in a superfluid with equal number of $\uparrow$- and $\downarrow$-spins. Second, one applies a radio-frequency sweep to selectively break Cooper pairs near the domain walls and transfer the $\uparrow$-spins to a third spin state which does not interact with the $\uparrow$- and $\downarrow$-spins. The resulting FFLO state has exactly one unpaired $\downarrow$-spin in each domain wall and is stable for all values of domain-wall separation and interaction strength. We show that the protocol can be implemented with high fidelity at sufficiently strong interactions for a wide range of parameters available in present-day experimental conditions.

Dimensional Crossover in a Spin-imbalanced Fermi gas

We model the one-dimension (1D) to three-dimension (3D) crossover in a cylindrically trapped Fermi gas with attractive interactions and spin-imbalance. We calculate the mean-field phase diagram, and study the relative stability of exotic superfluid phases as a function of interaction strength and temperature. For weak interactions and low density, we find 1D-like behavior, which repeats as a function of the chemical potential as new channels open. For strong interactions, mixing of single-particle levels gives 3D-like behavior at all densities. Furthermore, we map the system to an effective 1D model, finding significant density dependence of the effective 1D scattering length.

Kinetics of Bose-Einstein condensation in a dimple potential

We model the dynamics of condensation in a bimodal trap, consisting of a large reservoir region, and a tight "dimple" whose depth can be controlled. Experimental investigations have found that such dimple traps provide an efficient means of achieving condensation. In our kinetic equations, we include two- and three-body processes. The two-body processes populate the dimple, and lead to loss when one of the colliding atoms is ejected from the trap. The three-body processes produce heating and loss. We explain the principal trends, give a detailed description of the dynamics, and provide quantitative predictions for timescales and condensate yields. From these simulations, we extract optimal parameters for future experiments.

Variational study of polarons and bipolarons in a 1D Bose lattice gas in both superfluid and Mott regimes

We use variational methods to study a spin impurity in a 1D Bose lattice gas. Both in the strongly interacting superfluid regime and the Mott regime we find that the impurity binds with a hole, forming a polaron. Our calculations for the dispersion of the polaron are consistent with recent experiments by Fukuhara et. al. [Nature Phys. 9, 235 (2013)] and give a better understanding of their numerical simulations. We find that for sufficiently weak interactions there are ranges of momentum for which the polaron is unstable. We propose experimentally studying the stability of the polaron by measuring the correlation between the impurity and holes. We also study two interacting impurities, finding stable bipolarons for sufficiently strong interactions.

Damped bead on a rotating circular hoop - a bifurcation zoo

The evergreen problem of a bead on a rotating hoop shows a multitude of bifurcations when the bead moves with friction. This motion is studied for different values of the damping coefficient and rotational speeds of the hoop. Phase portraits and trajectories corresponding to all different modes of motion of the bead are presented. They illustrate the rich dynamics associated with this simple system. For some range of values of the damping coefficient and rotational speeds of the hoop, linear stability analysis of the equilibrium points is inadequate to classify their nature. A technique involving transformation of coordinates and order of magnitude arguments is presented to examine such cases. This may provide a general framework to investigate other complex systems.

Continuous Time Random Walk with time-dependent jump probability : A Direct Probabilistic Approach

We investigate the dynamics of a particle executing a general Continuous Time Random Walk (CTRW) in three dimensions under the influence of arbitrary time-varying external fields. Contrary to the general approach in recent works, our method invokes neither the Fractional Fokker-Planck equation (FFPE) nor the Stochastic Langevin Equation (SLE). Rather, we use rigorous probability arguments to derive the general expression for moments of all orders of the position probability density of the random walker for arbitrary waiting time density and jump probability density. Closed form expression for the position probability density is derived for the memoryless condition. For the special case of CTRW on a one-dimensional lattice with nearest neighbour jumps, our equations confirm the phenomena of "death of linear response" and "field-induced dispersion" for sub-diffusion pointed out in [I. M. Sokolov and J. Klafter, Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 97}, 140602 (2006)]. However, our analysis produces additional terms in the expressions for higher moments, which have non-trivial consequences. We show that the disappearance of these terms result from the approximation involved in taking the continuum limit to derive the generalized Fokker-Planck equation. This establishes the incompleteness of the FFPE formulation, especially in predicting the higher moments. We also discuss how different predictions of the model alter if we allow jumps beyond nearest neighbours and possible circumstances where this becomes relevant.

Bead on a rotating circular hoop: a simple yet feature-rich dynamical system

The motion of a bead on a rotating circular hoop is investigated using elementary calculus and simple symmetry arguments. The peculiar trajectories of the bead at different speeds of rotation of the hoop are presented. Phase portraits and nature of fixed points are studied. Bifurcation is observed with change in the rotational speed of the hoop. At a critical speed of rotation of the hoop, there appears an interesting relation between the time period and amplitude of oscillation of the bead. The study introduces several important aspects of nonlinear dynamics. It is suitable for students having basic understanding in elementary calculus and classical mechanics.
